Yes, Gov. Palin will do fine tonight and the pundits will be in awe!
By John Amato Tuesday Sep 02, 2008 3:00pmSo, the set up will be complete after she gives her speech tonight. With all the hoopla about her views and family, the pundits have already been saying that McCain bet the farm, or ranch or whatever by naming her to the ticket. Well, I expect her speech to be a big hit with the crowd and the punditry class will all swoon over it. All she has to do is be likable (no policy required) and she will be. Case closed.
McCain’s Media will blame the evil libruls for attacking her even though that's not the case and will praise her performance as the game changer for McCain. She'll become the "it" girl after tomorrow just long enough to make it through the election, just wait and see.

Like I had any doubt! Mark his words!
Honestly, could a Democrat get away with this? Hell no.
Does she know Lincoln, who founded the Republican Party, fought the Civil War to prevent secession?
See her video address to Alaska Independence Party this year - 6 months ago.

sure hope you're wrong.
I always watch these things, but this year I'm not going to be able to stomach it. Palin is a total disaster and a selfish woman. To parade Bristol and that boy is to much.
I'm not so sure. I'm thinking the corporate media zeitgeist is turning on this one -- they're actually getting POd at former crush McCain. And let's face it, Sarah just gives them too much material to pass up.
Is it possible? The Anti-Christ in the form of a woman?
Wait where is my literature?
Thats "Angry Libruls"
Her speech is practically irrelevant. There are SO many issues about her character and views right now! If the right thinks a speech can save a candidate that's this dodgy, they're wrong. Stuff is just going to keep coming out on her.
If McCain chose to nominate a hard right wing fundamentalist with a vaguely secessionist agenda, it is because that is what he wants her to pursue once she's in office.
If you liked Dick Cheney's unaccountable "Fourth Branch" power but felt it lacked enough evangelical craziness, you'll love Sarah Palin.
I'll say this about Sarah Palin and her 17-year-old daughter. I agree that such matters should be private, with decisions, choices and judgement kept within the family. I'll take it as far to say that that should be reflected by public policy...let the choices* remain with the individuals and their families.
I say this to Ms. Palin: "Ms. Palin, you want your family's privacy? Fine! Then just make sure you keep out of our bedrooms and keep a woman's right to choose!!!
*including, sexual aids, contraception and a woman's right to choose.
Will she give the devoted a flash of "The Poonanny of Freedom"!!
CNN just released polls saying the electoral map changed in favor of Obama. Let's hope.
You articulated my current fear. If only there were a Q&A tonight. But, you know, they're going to keep her in a bubble as tight as they can make it right through the election. What we need is some brainstorming on bubble-piercing.
Actually, she will screw up badly seven minutes and eight seconds into her remarks. She will lose the audience at that time and not regain it.

Yes, she will do well but won't it be funny when McCain does worse then his V.P.?
LOL i can't wait to see her outshine McCain.
From what I have been reading McCain can bet the farm and the ranch, lose and still have property left over.
Come on! THis if fun.
Just watching the right-wing christians applaud an unmarried 17 yo and her babby daddy is worth any price.
I don't think anyone apart from those drowning at the inxsess convention center will agree. Just imagine when she debates Joe Biden and can't pronounce the names of the countries he is talking about. She still doesn't know what the VP does, and when real questions get asked, she folds up like a cheap table.
The show has just begun to get funny. Imagine propping up the daughter's boyfriend and bringing him a suit and a plane ticket to help the cause. Hilarious. When they start talking about her crimes it is going to get far more entertaining.

LOLz!
bubba @ 19:
Exactly right. That image alone is worth the cost of cable this month.
If she faints and falls off the stage it will be blamed on what bush called the angry left.
Of course, no matter what the fu*k she says, she could read names from the phone book and still the right would gush about her abilities.
Now if she mentions she would like to ban some books, see Alaska separate from the United States and that she wants all women examined twice a year to see if they have had an abortion, that might raise some concern.
this woman is a joke
Spent the morning at work listening to some of these nutcases discuss the speech tonight.
"Oooh Sarah will be on tonight".
"Aren't you excited?"
"Sarah, I just call her Sarah was a great pick"
Heaven help us!
That is something you can make book on... It is also probably the main reason the McCain camp has been stoking the fires on her all week long.
GOTTA KEEP LOWERING THAT BAR.... so the thugs can rise above it...
1) at least it wasn't gay
2) at least no animals were involved
3) at least they will marry and keep the baby
4) did we mention that we are against sex education... learn about it the old fashion way... behind the hockey rink
Joohn, you are a true jounalist and you know what you are talking about, but -
The pundits are skeptical of Palin. And let's not forget they are still taken aback by McCain's choice. Some of them were even personally offended that they had to scrap all their notes about the 6 or so front-runners on McCain's short list and start from scratch.
All it takes is one gaffe, one silly slip for Palin to be hated by the corporate media. Some have already turned against her.
Besides taxes, energy, and national defense, she won't be discussing much policy tonight. She will spend most of her time talking about her family. It won't be presidential or vice presidential.
Does anyone remember Qualye's 1988 RNC speech? Queue it up....
"she'll hit it out of the park" is a phrase that's already been floated around a bit.
i say we send bill to tonites speech
have him meet her after the speech, seduce her and have it all caught on cam
come on bill...do it for the party and your country
And when she does eventually have to go unscripted, it will be a disaster.
If I watch any of this waste of time, dog shit and phony show it will be on C-Span the only place you don't have the full range of talking idiot heads.
No more MSM for me.
Do you think the media will ask her about the $500 million dollars that went to Transcanada to build a redundant oil pipeline, or any other controversial questions, such as her desire to ban books in her town's library when she was mayor... or perhaps, her hypocrisy of having a pregnant, unwed, teenage daughter yet being a proponent of abstinence until marriage...
I've been afraid of this too.... but I hope (and kinda think) you're wrong. McCain was already fouling up his love affair with the press (see his cantankerous, monosyllabic interview with TIME magazine). And his hissy fit about Campbell Brown could have been the fatal error (we'll see if CNN continues to stand behind her).
A female called in to c-span extolling the many virtues of Palin, but when she mentioned Palin's name, she pronounced it completely wrong. Yeah, this woman knew all she needed to know about the veep choice except how to pronounce her name.
Let her have her fifteen minutes because once the debates begin, knowing what removes Moose blood from overalls won't be an answer to any of the questions asked of her. She's going to look like Sherman with Mr. Peabody.
John could be right. She is there simply for show. I doubt anyone really expects her to say anything of real value. In many ways, this RNC is like the political version of WWE professional wrestling. You know you are watching phony tough guys and plastic Barbie doll looking women who continue to talk about their so called values but you know its all fake. There are those people that continue to support the Republicans who will eat it up though.
has anyone wondered what Bristol actually wants to do? is she being forced to carry her child by her parents? is she being coerced into a "shotgun marriage" by her parents? why does Sarah Palin get credit for these "choices" when they should be her daughter's choices. AND does not the fact that they call them choices mean that they consider abortion to also be a choice????and if for them, why not for me!
i wonder if her speech will read like the
"VAGINA MONOLOGUES"?
So will she make the Sunday talk shows this weekend? I'm sure they would love to have her if her handlers will allow her to go. When she goes on these shows, then we'll really get to know how smart she is and how she handles herself under pressure.
And yet when Senator Obama gives a good speech, we keep getting reminded that there's more to governing than being able to give a good speech.
Not going to watch, of course.
I don't care a damn about her speaking skills -- or lack thereof.
I already know all I need to know about her. She's a flat-earth, End Times, Bible-thumping, animal-gutting, tundra-paving, oil-spewing, Republican hypocrite.
And she has a very irritating voice.
I expect a 15pt bounce! Anything less is a failure!
Yet, C&L, the Huffington Post and all the Liberal blogs will run with every little story that grabs the medias attention about this woman. John, your prediction might as well have been "I'm going to eat something then shit it out later."
McCain is clearly going for the sympathy vote. He got the nomination that way, now he's hoping we pick on the mother of 5.
The owners of Diebold and their proprietary software will help I'm sure as well...
Let's get real -- it won't be her speech. It will be a speech written by McCain's speech writers.
WR @ 36:
Hey! Lay off Sherman! What did he ever do to you to be dragged into this?
I predict the tent falls in tonight.
Dhalgren @ 28:
Yes but the media was critical about her before their bosses gave them thier marching orders. You watch how all the talking paid liars start giving her rave reviews.
The thought of losing all that money will get them to say whatever the coprorations want them to say. It's the corporate fascist way!
susan g @ 38:
I read somewhere yesterday that Bristol and her mom had a nasty fight about this. No, she does not want to marry this guy.
Jesus, Wolf is talking to Glen Beck about Sarah Palin. Who the fu*k cares what that waste of human flesh has to say about anyone? Now Beck is kissing Wolf's ass by telling him he is the only person in the media he trusts.
Shan @ 41:
bravo!
I hope they have the podium pointed in the right direction.
If she looks toward Las Vegas, Palin might turn into a pillar of salt.
Of course, most of the attendees are already in danger of turning into pillars of dust.
I agree, she will probably do very well tonight. I also think there will be the usual chorus from the "true believers" scolding all the naysayers and left wing "America haters."
The rest is up to the media. If they keep scratching around and digging up things that are just too difficult to "spin" away, the tide could turn and Palin could find herself out and the Rethugs with egg on their collective little pinched faces.
As an aside: did anyone else think it strange that during the crowds responses to the various speakers, the "whoops" and "hollering" and chants of "USA,USA, USA" we heard through the audience microphone never really matched up to how the crowd was reacting as the cameras spanned the arena?

I hope she goes off script and God tells her to get really wacky.
He's right. I awoke this morning to see the "angry villagers" from yesterday already falling on their swords. They managed to set themselves up as the strawman for her to knock down tonight, all for the sake of corporate unity.
I predict everyone will start putting earplugs in after five minutes because the sound of her voice is going to go right through their brains like a bradawl.

I saw CNN standing this morning and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Posted it on another thread way down, but here it is again: I saw Soledad O'Brien rip a new one on a McCain supporting, conservative blogger lady because the woman was taking the same lame-ass lines that Tucker was on Campbell. Soledad almost blew a gasket and kept asking for "just one" example of Palin's experience. She wasn't falling for the dodge. I was pretty sure it would be a cold day in hell before I ever saw Soledad push a conservative in an interview so temps must have been falling fast in Hades today.
I do think McCain may have come to the end of his free ride with the media. He certainly seems to have pissed off CNN.
pissed off patricia @ 40:
I think they would want to delay an interview for as long as possible. She just isn't ready for national media Q&A. You saw the clip from CNBC and Glenn Beck. She's just a hair better than I am in front of a TV camera (and I have been in front of 4 in my life).

Yup, it will go well
I think that John has a winner here. The ProfitMedia will fall into line and we'll have a "feisty former beuty queen and the old maverick" puke-a-thon.
Feisty my ass. Bugnutty...
She may end up being a great speaker but after the tabloid frenzy is over, it will all be about content (for everyone other than the indoctrinated right-wing short bus folks) and it is guaranteed that the "content" will be loaded with assertions, commitments, claims that will continue to reveal this whole charade for what it is: an unbridled attempt to circumvent the Constitution on behalf of the Republican Party and turn our government into a Theocracy. Since when is it appropriate for a Political Party to invoke "god" every other sentence and to base a campaign on a single religion's ideas regarding abortion and when "life begins?" If someone running for office is against abortion and believes in creation, fine. They have no business even suggesting they should superimpose their views on the rest of us. Where is the MSM on this whole issue of Separation of Church and State. I thought that was one of core principles of this nation.
We are in Afghanistan today fighting the Taliban. We don't need one here.
Her first venture in front of journalist will tell the story. Journalists who can't be easily charmed and bull shitted to. I doubt she has ever faced much unfriendly press up there in Alaska. If she did, she probably had them fired.
Well, if McCain bets the farm and the ranch and loses, he'll at least have five houses left over.
As for Palin being an "It girl," and that bit about the "Vagina Monlogues," those are the kind of sexist references that get us all into trouble, aren't they?
Just sayin'...
A ring is seen on the left hand of Bristol Palin, 17, daughter of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, as she walks off a bus to meet Republican presidential candidate John McCain on his arrival in Minneapolis, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008.
Yip
no doubt her speech will be well-received. the gopers have no other choice. they will all happily oblige.
but tonight we will see what KIND OF INTELLECT she has. if it's true that she's SHALLOW. if she has the "suppleness of mind" somebody was talking about earlier. or if she's just a UNIDIMENSIONAL character that has no place in both the national and international stage.
Hold on to your ear drums this is going to be loud, shrill and painful.

Two schools of thought here.
Either the press will jump on McCain, because he's jilted them, and a jilted lover is not a pretty thing to be, or the press will adore Palin's speech as long as she doesn't make a huge blunder. The criteria will be like Bush's first debate performance in 2000. As long as Palin doesn't look like a complete idiot, she wins.
Sad really that such an unqualified person could lead this country.
It is also sad that the chief Republican strategest may be right that this election is about personalities and not policy.
Says a lot about the U.S. population if this is true...
With such a high percentage of the population saying the country is heading in the wrong direction, it is just crazy that the population could even want 4 or 8 more years of Republicans...
Obama is making two big mistakes:
1) he has let the election become about him (although he may not have been able to control this, as the MSM has run with all the personal Obama attacks)..... the Republicans have been smart to turn this away from the issues and to direct the focus on a referedum on Obama himself...
2) he should be running against the Republicans and not McCain... let people know that they would be putting the Republicans back in power... largely the same people who have been running this country for the last 8 yrs... McCain is in the Republican party and should be held responsible for everything that has gone wrong in the last 8 yrs... he was there and a leader of the Republicans...

I'm just dying to have somebody ask her, "When you were mayor of Wassila, you wanted the town librarian to ban some books from the library; what books did you want banned, and why?"
They want to beat us on personality. We must beat them with issues and personality.
but remember, her main purpose is to throw red meat to the faaaaar right loons. there is no way for her to soften the blow when it comes to her positions on abortion/birthcontrol/creationism, etc. and i'm sure she can't wait to start spouting off for them. mcshame was already in danger of loosing more ground with moderates, and she pushes him even farther out of the center (where never really was anyway). anyone in the middle are going to see that if they are "soulmates" then that's a marraige made in hell.
Keep on the script: "She can read her lines real good. What happens when the teleprompter gets turned off?" I want to see her in more than one debate. She needs testing, don't you think?
I tried to see some of the videos on her church's website, but they've shut it down due to "too much traffic."
I did, however, come across this article and video of Ms. Sarah speaking to her church congregation just this past June, 08. Besides the obvious religious crap,
the thing that is patently obvious, as it is in other videos I've seen, is that she has the maturity level of a 9th grader. After 8 years of Dubya, I dont think any of us want to be subjected to this kind of inanity.......

Michelle Obama was excoriated for an awkwardly-worded sentence in a speech, and she wasn't on the ticket. Sarah Palin has ties to an organization that wants to secede from the United States. Where are the demands that she prove her patriotism and loyalty?
Did anyone notice when the camera pans around the convention hall how little diversity there is in the audiance? Mainly rich white people, stupid white people, old white people, young stupid white people. I can't see how this will work out well for the GOPers. Who wants to miss a convention full of moralizing god bags gleefully barking in praise of the kid who knocked-up the Governor's daughter. The women in my office are universally appalled at how the kids are being used as political props.
The old man was a POW and now the young Christian woman is being victimized by a godless, evil, misogynistic, librul media....total Bullshit....that's all these two frauds have got.
Did you see this video from TPM? About the repub pundits on mike? Gotta use this footage for an ad for Obama!
I honestly think the American people know Palin for what she is, A fraud. It's the pundits who think she fabulous. You look at any poll and you will find Americans aren't buying this Bullshit.
Remember a few weeks ago we learned that McCain's campaign was sealing him off from the press on his plane. They couldn't go back and chat with him like they used to. The campaign was also taking away his cell phone too. They were doing this to keep him on message and to keep him from verbally fu*king up every time he spoke with the press. This was during the time he didn't know which country bordered which or which group was fighting who and why in Iraq.
So now that McCain isn't allowed to be all snugly with the press they are no longer catering to him and covering for him. I doubt he is getting any more donuts from them and for sure not the ones with sprinkles.

Attention disillusioned Republicans:
Take your party back ... vote Obama/Biden ... it's the only way. Then, for the next few years, you can work on putting people back in office who represent your core values.
Democrats have had to watch for eight long years while Bush and Cheney ran roughshod over you and us in the process. Face it; your party has been hijacked by neoconservative pro-Israeli chickenhawks (like Cheney, Feith and Wolfowitz), jingoistic blowhards (see Fox "News" and Rush Limbaugh), radical Evangelicals, and a President and VP who make sailors on shore leave look fiscally conservative. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Those people at the convention would consider Eisenhower a raging liberal, for crying out loud!

I've wondered about that myself but whatever Bristol thinks matters little to Sarah Palin and the Republican Party. To be blunt, what they are doing to Bristol and Levi is no different than what the Taliban or other extremists do.
Hey...anybody know what's going on in Iraq right now? I know these conventions are important but sheesh!
A few weeks back I made a snide remark here at C&L about the repubs being so crass and desperate at their convention that they would probably show a giant picture of McCain in the bed when he was a POW. Lord, I never thought they would really do it, but today when I watched a little of Thompson's speech last night, there was that picture on that giant tv screen behind Thompson.

Especially during an election year.
Gotta disagree with you on this one, John. Sure, the Rethugs and the right wing pundits will try to spin this, but
A) I think the general public and independents are wise to how incompetent a pick this is. She'll only rally the Bush fringe 25%-ers.
B) No one is paying attention to the RNC (again except the 25%-ers)
C) There isn't enough lipstick to put on this pig. No mater how she tries, she'll still come off to reasonable people as "Caribou Barbie"
I am so sick of repugs. Last night, I couldn't watch but a few minutes in total. I don't know if I'll watch any of her tonight or not. I don't want to get sick again.
Cheney's in Azerbaijhan today. As much as I hate that cretin, as much as I really question his intentions of going there, I wonder how Palin would do in this type of situation?
I just saw that hannity claims to not remember the repugs by Limbaugh and McCain himself bashing Chelsea Clinton (RAWSTORY). He also cut off Mary Matalin when she was attempting to say that Obama said that families are off limits.
This election to me is also as much about these frgn' right wing nuts and haters like Hannity and Limbaugh and Coulter who strongly support McCain/Palin. To a very large extent, voting for McCain/Palin validates the filth coming out of these asswipes' mouths.

VERY good question! When is she going to be on Meet the Press?
Liberal@130, Damn straight.
terilyn @ 102:
I'm sorry, terilyn, but what parents are supposed to do is PARENT. Do you think this "role model" is going to be there for her daughter, when her daughter is going through a critical time in her life and surely needs both parents? Do you think this superwoman is going to be there for her daughter, and her special needs baby, while undergoing a grueling national campaign? Not to mention if, God forbid, McCain is actually elected and Palin is now VP.
I'm sorry. A real parent would have put family before career or ambition. Please don't tout this woman as a role model.
No. 44 @ 61:
Priceless.
Amitola @ 86:
There have been a lot of things disappearing the last few days from Palin's internet records.
Joe O. @ 133:
Yeah. Only the rest of the developed world is watching and saying "America? WTF?!"
Never Underestimate the Ignorance of the American Public.
I am 100% with John Amato on this one.
Never underestimate your opponent.
Noone ever cares about the issues, Boooorrrring.
This could be bad.
Karl Rove said she don't need no stinking experience. This is a "political" choice.
He had Don Siegelman put in jail for a political choice and the Democrats have yet to come to his aid. Karl Rove needs to be frog marched into jail. Sarah Palin is the "wallet" John McCain needs. That's what women are to Republicans. John McCain married a Beer Heiress. Now he needs more money and a base of supporters. Is John McCain a whore?
Peter G @ 122:
