Hold Your Heads Up

Ignorance must really be bliss. How else, over so many years, could the G.O.P. get away with ridiculing all things liberal?

Troglodytes on the right are no respecters of reality. They say the most absurd things and hardly anyone calls them on it.

Why liberals don’t stand up to this garbage, I don’t know. Without the extraordinary contribution of liberals — from the mightiest presidents to the most unheralded protesters and organizers — the United States would be a much, much worse place than it is today.

There would be absolutely no chance that a Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin could make a credible run for the highest offices in the land. Conservatives would never have allowed it.

Civil rights? Women’s rights? Liberals went to the mat for them time and again against ugly, vicious and sometimes murderous opposition. They should be forever proud.

From a post by The Littlest Gator over at Group News Blog:

From Sept. 2007, CNN

Just last month, presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, said pet projects could have played a role in a Minnesota bridge collapse that killed 13 people earlier this year.

"Maybe if we had done it right, maybe some of that money would have gone to inspect those bridges and other bridges around the country," McCain told a group of people in a town-hall style meeting in Ankeny, Iowa.

"Maybe the 200,000 people who cross that bridge every day would have been safer than spending $233 million of your tax dollars on a bridge in Alaska to an island with 50 people on it."

Ouch.

The latter.

The phrase "putting lipstick on a pig" is an American colloquialism that means, "making the unattractive superficially attractive," with overtones of futility or of a lost cause. (You can put lipstick on a pig, but in the end, it's still a pig.)

"[T]he formation of the Palin Truth Squad couldn't have happened too soon, as we saw when Sen. Obama in Lebanon, Va., this evening uttered what I can only deem to be disgraceful comments comparing our vice presidential nominee Gov. Palin to a pig," Swift said.

"Sen. Obama owes Gov. Palin an apology," she said.

The odd thing is Dennis, McCain used the same lipstick analogy when describing one Hillary Clinton's proposals. What I would like o know, Dennis, did you have the same concerns about McCain's misogyny at that time, or did you have those concerns when McCain "joked" about a gorilla raping a woman?

Obama has used the expression before. Last September, around the time McCain said it about Clinton's health care plan.

"I think that both Gen. Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker are capable people who have been given an impossible assignment," Obama said in a telephone interview. "George Bush has given a mission to Gen. Petraeus, and he has done his best to try to figure out how to put lipstick on a pig."

A BBC poll published today will show that, despite the tightness of the race in the US, Obama is the overwhelming favourite in 22 countries. He is preferred to McCain by a four to one margin on average across the 22,000 people polled.

The margin in favour of Obama ranges from just 9% in India to 82% in Kenya. On average 49% prefer Obama to 12% preferring McCain. Nearly four in 10 do not take a position.

And you just know, that if this fact became widely known in the US, it would actually work against Senator Obama. The mind reels ...

Don't buy the polls. It's a farce. The polling companies have been taking a larger sample of Republicans to make for a tighter looking race.

oncall- Hillary Clinton had not just uttered a very memorable line from a very memorable speech about lipstick just less than a week before. A line that has been repeated and replayed about a thousand and one times in the last 5-6 days. Lousy comparison, but one I would use to try defend if that was all I had. Not even close to being convincing. And like I said, even if he wasn't aware of the reference he just made and the coincidence, the crowd sure did. Do you think he was just thinking the crowd loved his line without thinking why?

An author named Mick Farren wrote a book called "Armageddon Crazy" which was set in a future where the US got taken over and run into the dark ages by lunatic Christian Fundamentalists while the rest of the world got on with things and advanced decades into the future both technologically and socially.

At the time, I thought a good book but surely too fanciful to be true ...

At least the parts where the US Government were verbally attacking "Red Canada" because they took one look at the insanity going on south of the border and threw their lot in with the Soviet Union were pretty funny. As were Canadian tanks storming the border near the end of the book to help an internal coup put an end to all of that nonsense.

That said, this "lipstick on a pig" controversy is shameful for the McCain campaign to exploit. Between Obama using it before, McCain using it before, and the person Sarah wishes to replace using it in reference to John Kerry, it's obscene.

Rick Davis appears to be right: it's not about the issues, especially if you're making something controversial out of nothing...

The odd thing is Dennis, McCain used the same lipstick analogy when describing one Hillary Clinton's proposals. What I would like o know, Dennis, did you have the same concerns about McCain's misogyny at that time, or did you have those concerns when McCain "joked" about a gorilla raping a woman?

oncall- Hillary Clinton had not just uttered a very memorable line from a very memorable speech about lipstick just less than a week before.

Dennis, you are straying from your concern for women and it shows in this clueless argument you posted. So stop posting your ridiculous and patently transparent and obviously misogynist "concerns" for women when it is clear you really don't give a damn about women. Everybody here sees through your B.S.

Of course the crowd was happy to hear Obama criticize that lying, hypocritical lunatic. It is about time somebody did, and Obama is probably happy that it made it to the news. Right now, the news for McPalin is not looking so good, is it? She is being exposed as a fraud and liar who gorges herself at the public's expense (~$18K/day per diem expense while staying home from the Alaskan capitol). Actually, the crowd was cheering, because they were happy to see Obama take a swipe at McPalin. He is very selective in his words and he did know what he was saying, and I, like millions of others, am glad he said it.

I'm like 20 seconds into the Rachel Maddow show, and she drops the bomb that McCain and Palin slag on the Freddie Mac thing slagging on Lobbyists, when his campaign manager Rick Davis LOBBIED for Freddie Mac, or something like that. This isn't breaking news, is it. I can't even wrap my head around all of the scandals and gaffes. I'm having anxiety attacks. The entire U.S. Populace is like dead zombies. It's so weird. The Media is rotten. I like Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow.

Haha...McCain never heard of that term "lipstick on a pig?" He's out of touch with even the oldest of colloquialisms (circa 18th century, I believe). Then Rick Davis thought, "Hey that's a great attack, we'll say Obama is a misogynist, you're a genius maverick!"

He actually used it referring to Hillary Clinton's Proposals. The thing about the Obama quote is that he wasn't remotely referring to Palin. He was referring to the Republic Party's attempt to dress up the same old shit, using the 'Change' mantra they ripped off from the Obama campaign.

Remember the guy who got fired for using the word 'niggardly' because a bunch of mouth breathers thought he was being racist (IIRC, he was a black guy). Same bunch of arseholes up in Obama's grill over this.

They remember her lipstick pit bull joke (which enamoured and thrilled them so-"The difference between me [and all soccer moms, according to her] and a pit bull is lipstick!!! hahahahaha!") and hear Obama say the word lipstick et voila! New fake outrage and controversy. And apparently my gal dennis is leading the pack of mouth breathers on C&L...

Rick Davis appears to be right: it's not about the issues, especially if you're making something controversial out of nothing...

Spring 2007
Defenders in Action: Vote Scheduled on Aerial Wolf-Shooting Ban

Alaska voters will have another opportunity to ban the public from participating in aerial wolf shooting. Nearly 57,000 Alaskans signed a petition last year to place the issue on the next state ballot. In February, the state lieutenant governor certified the ballot measure, which will be voted on in August 2008. Alaskans have twice before passed similar ballot measures, but both were overturned by the state legislature. Meanwhile, more than 600 wolves have been shot by aerial gunners in Alaska during the past four years, including at least 38 in the first two months of 2007.

Obama has eight years of Bush failure to work with. He needs to beat the economic drum. Here's what he needs to answer himself and needs to ask McCain since he claims to be the the agent of change (I can't even say that with a straight face) :

* What Bush economic policies do you repudiate?
* Where have you broken with Bush on the economy?
* Since you're advocating the same tax policies that Bush enacted, why would anyone expect a different result?

Obama needs to crystal clear on these answers. And McCain won't be able to answer these questions. His campaign has put all their money on identity politics.

Kitty has been explaining to you, Obama was clearly comparing McPalin's claim to be the change candidates to wrapping rotten, smelly fish in paper as a means to keep the odors from escaping so that most people would not recognize them for the lying pieces of rot that they really are.

Wait, oncall. You just admitted you knew that Obama was referring to Palin and you along with a million others were glad he said it. You've flipped already? I understand everything Tapper said. And I still stand by what I said before, with the lipstick reference from Palin's speech and the hundreds of times it's been repeated, Obama's lipstick/pig reference and the resulting crowd approval, either he knew what he was doing, or still didn't know after the crowd went wild and he is totally daft not to have gotten it and been able to correct himself immediately. Neither are good scenarios, and like I said before, way too many of these that he's done to give him a pass on all of them. And if you give him a pass on all of them, then he must think you're the one that's stupid.

Dennis, Thanks for answering my question. I guess I can say you are not perverted by your asinine reply, however I can be confident that you are dense. Sheeesh. I should know better than trying to engage somebody like you in logical debate. I will happily discuss issues with others here, but you are beyond hope. Does your head hurt?

Cherry pick and spin it, girl.

You couldn't even pretend to think that if Hillary had been the VP selection and had made the now incredibly brilliant and popular pitbull/lipstick analogy that Sarah Reagan-Thatcher did, and John McCain had almost immediately thereafter made a lipstick on a pig remark, or God forbid, 'lipstick on a monkey it would still be a monkey' remark, that you and this place wouldn't be on it like stink on the proverbial you-know-what.

Please don't deny that, because I need to get to sleep and that would make me laugh too way too hard for that.

And for those of you who truly think country comes first and anti-McCainers who are feeling a bit anxious:

More than 2 million new Democrats registered in the 28 states that register voters according to party affiliation. The Republicans have lost nearly 344,000 thousand voters in the same states. Read this article, it will make you feel a little bit better.

Don't let miserable assholes like Dennis get you down. Many of us still care about our country rather than party.

Peter G @ 106:

You know what sucks. This sucks: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/sep/10/women.uselections2008 It is beginning to look like they can make the Palin Strategy work just by controlling access to her and using the vast array of friendly media types. I am really quite pissed that Obama didn't see the obvious vulnerability created by not putting Hillary on the ticket. The number of people I've talked to that think Palin is just so cool is appalling. If the Democrats are going to win this thing they are going to have to get really mean and soon.

The Biden/Palin debate can't come soon enough for me.

I'm willing to bet right now that no such debate will ever take place. The republicans will find some reason to claim bias and veto the debate. Right now they are doing a superb job of controlling the message. It won't matter a bit that I think Palin has made a career out of waiting till the train is leaving the station then climbing on board and claiming to be the engineer. I always thought this thing was going to be close and now I fear the worst. Somebody post something funny. I'd hate to turn into a buzz kill.

No, you're absolutely right, Mr. G. And this isn't any time for fun and games either where there is focused work to be done.

I thank you and anyone else who can bring some sobriety to the table, actually. Lord knows, the Bush administration has never presented any of that for their country.

Already comparing her to Reagan and Thatcher is about the stupidest fucking thing I've seen yet. I must say, you are a complete whackjob.

Stirfry, Obama does have 8 years of Bush to work with. When will he start working with it? Debates? McPalin will have quick, snappy sound bites. Obama will talk through a thesis, and no one will get anything out of it, except for people like us. Why does he assume 51 percent of the country can see the forest through the trees?

I'm just using your post as a sounding board, but for God's sake, man, what is their campaign thinking? I don't care about daily, national or EV polls. Look who won the last two elections. This is a fricking crisis, and the Obama people better start getting ahead of the game.

No, Barack, McCain is NOT a great and wonderful hero and public servant. He is a wealthy, lying POS. We should not bow down to him because he was a POW. So were a lot of others, and others before and after him fought in wars. The snake talks nonstop about his service, but refuses to give Vets any college benefits and works to keep their medical care at the bare minimum.

Yes, there are thousands of things to work with here. Where the hell is Obama?

Dennis I see your pursuing your lifelong career of being obtuse. If Obama wasn't referring to Palin he should have been . I' and just about everybody else here has used the phrase "lipstick on a pig" and knows exactly what it means. Was I being sexist when I used the term to describe Rove's work in getting the Worst President Ever elected?

From a couple of articles in the UK Guardian

I think they're using the NCLB system ;)

Uh, no it's an INTERNATIONAL poll. See:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7606100.stm

And I agree that both a) this fact would probably HURT Obama and b) that's incomprehensible to most sane people but then most of American politics is equally insane.

how many families here get travel expenses for the kids payed for?

how many working moms get to take their kids into work?

THIS WOMAN ISNT TYPICAL...AND SHE HAS TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE TAXPAYER TO PRESENT THE LIE OF BEING A PERFECT MOTHER WHILE BALANCING A CAREER

my sister has 3 kids, she works, comes home to pick up the kids, takes care of them, makes them dinner and then helps my asshole brother in law do his books

my sister is the typical working mother...cuz the state doesnt give her any fucking perks

so fuck off if i attack palin for being a lying skeevy bitch

her kids are nothing more than props...and were it not for state assistance, every one of those kids would be a fucking crack whore...even trigger the wonder horse

I think you guys are being too hard on dennis.

After all, he is willing to show up night after night trolling for abuse and asking questions that the Corporate media will not answer for the public. ("The public's right to know the truth" has gone the way of "fair and balanced BS")

At least dennis does more than his favorite hopeful VP does and shows up to at least have a conversation. Palin has been hiding from the press for 10- days now.

Hell, dennis is more prepared to be McCain's next VP than that hockey mom in lipstick based solely on the premise that he is willing to show his true self for all to see.

So, All hail dennis. More qualified than a woman who in 2004 said that running for Senate from Alaska would keep her from her "mothering" duties. My how the world changes in 4 years, huh?
