Obama Reverses Positions on 527s
Finally. John blogged about this a few months ago and it has been the subject of more than a few heated discussions, both internally and with other bloggers, as we shake our heads and wonder how in the world we've gotten to the point where John McCain -- a man who promises four more years of failed ideas from the least popular president in history -- can be neck and neck with Barack Obama. It's time to hit back and to push back on the Republican framing getting such a strong toehold within the media. The best way to do that is from 527s and it looks like the Obama campaign has realized it:
There's been a spurt of 527 activity on behalf of Sen. John McCain, but Barack Obama campaign has suddenly gone silent on the subject.
That's because, after a year of telling donors not to contribute to 527 groups, of encouraging strategists not to form them and of suggesting that outside messaging efforts would not be welcome in Obama's Democratic Party, Obama's strategists have changed their approach.
An Obama adviser privy to the campaign's internal thinking on the matter says that,with less than two months before the election and with the realization that Republicans have achieved financial parity with Democrats, they hope that Democratic allies -- what another campaign aide termed "the cavalry" -- will come to Obama's aid.
The Obama campaign can't ask donors to form outside groups; it can only communicate, through the public and the media, with body language, tells and hints.
The upshot: Obama's campaign will no longer object to independent efforts that hammer John McCain, just as, in their mind, the McCain campaign has not objected to those efforts targeted at Obama. "I assume with their 527s stirring, some [Democratic] ones will as well," another senior campaign official said.
I don't know about you guys, but I think it's time to start hammering.

No, it was time to start hammering in August. Now it's too late, the next 2 months of hammering will be met with the typical "negative campaigning" slant, as a result, it will all be spun in favor of McCain anyway.
Yes, it's time to start hammering, but first they have to stop letting Republicans set the debate. For example, the Iraq debate has suddenly become all about the surge... because that's what Republicans want it to be about. The campaign has become all about Sarah Palin and personality... because that's what Republicans want it to be about. McCain and Palin are "reformers"... because that's what Republicans want them to be. Obama is an "elite"... because that's what Republicans want him to be. Meanwhile, what are Republicans being made to answer for?
If Democrats are constantly on defense, McCain wins. Even if Obama and Biden can quell the charges against them and burst the McCain/Palin mythology, they've spent all of their time and energy doing so and that's still a victory for the McCain campaign. The thing that's really hurting us is that we don't have an equivalent infrastructure of Fox News/talk radio/propagandist, lockstep pundits to get our side out there in force and push the mainstream media to pick up on it. It's unfortunate that that MSM is no longer in the business of reporting facts, but that's what were up against and we have to respond accordingly.

A Psychopath is essentially a person who seems to be unable to live on normal ordered terms with normal ordered society.

I believe that when we look back at this election, that Obama's decision to muzzle the 527's, will be seen as one of the fatal flaws in his campaign. It was clear that the Republicans would smear Obama over the summer, and Obama's decision not to use 527's to define McCain and the Republicans may have cost him the election. The Republican smear tactics, using 527's was very predictable, and we have Obama to blame for his incompetence in running the campaign this way. And Obama has to get back to doing what he’s good at. Delivering inspiring orations. Remember the Jeremiah Wright nonsense? How many were predicting his demise upon the release of the Wright clips? How often was it played? And what did Obama do in response? Submit a 30-second spot to the “news” channels? No, he got up and talked to us about racism in America. And it worked.
He’s got to get back out on the grand stumping stage, and make a big speech about the ugly game of politics. He’s got to get out there and say, “The Republican Party is about nothing but lies! Stand with me and stop the lies. They say we can’t do it, that this is just the way politics is. Well, I say, ‘YES WE CAN!’ It does not have to be this way! Will you stand with me? I don't have a yard sign -yet. But, I do have Obama '08 stickers (from moveOn) on my car windows - both sides, and I printed out my own sign that I've taped above them which just says - in bold, letters - I've Had ENOUGH !!!
It would be nice if the Dems or MoveOn or someone would make yard signs that said that and made them easy to get a hold of.

Obama was just too nice. People tried to tell him that this would happen but he trusted the American public to be a lot smarter than they really are as a group. Example: The GOP convention, the vet holds up a sign saying McCain hasn't helped vets and no one says does the man have a point? No the croud hollars USA USA USA and end of the conversation.

Time to make some ads about how McCain opposed the Webb GI Bill because it was too generous for the troops. How about an announcer saying, "Barack Obama supported the Webb GI Bill but John McCain didn't because the benefits were too generous. Is anything too generous for our heroes in uniform?" What about fighting back against the sex ed ad? "Why does John McCain ridicule Barack Obama for supporting common sense legislation that protects our children from sexual predators? Barack Obama--standing up for our children. John McCain--standing in the way."
Bubba knew how to fight back and he won 2 terms. It's time for Barack to prove that he isn't a Dukakis, Gore, or Kerry.
