Candidates' Forum on National Service Open Thread

CNN [also being aired on MSNBC]:

Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama will come together Thursday night for half-hour appearances at a TIME-sponsored forum on national service at Columbia University in New York.

The candidates will not speak together at the forum, but they will both participate in a discussion about national service with Time Managing Editor Rick Stengel and PBS's Judy Woodruff.

Second!

Not even 10 minutes into this thing and McCain's already lying about "Georgia invading South Ossetia!!"

For God's sake, would someone in the media set him straight on this B.S.????

The Realist's picture

In McCain's defense (you won't hear me say that often), the Russia/Georgia thing is really a matter of perceptive. Personally, I think Russia in the right to invade Georgia, but more importantly... I didn't give a damn about it.

Liberal AND Proud's picture

McCain believes that all the volunteer services are overstaffed with volunteers.

Does he believe this shit or does he just make it up?

Not just pushing volunteers, but pushing the role of government.

That's because he is in NY.

When he's in Alabama...he'll be spitting venom at the idea of government as a solution.

McCain doesn't believe in anything but being President...to satisfy his ego.

He's a shill and a fake...a lying sack of shit with no scruples who would sell out his mother to win an election.

Asked whether the United States would have to go to war with Russia if it invaded Georgia, and the country was part of NATO, Palin said: "Perhaps so."

On the Candidate's Forum on Service, McCain just said:

"Listen, Mayors have the toughest job, I think, in America. Its easy for me to go to Washington and, frankly, be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have. So, I admire Mayors."

This confirms Obama's theme that McCain just doesn't get it about the middle class, about working people, about people's day-to-day reality. And McCain said it himself. Obama should counter that he went to Washington to help people with their day-to-day problems, not be divorced from them.

GIBSON: Do you agree with the Bush doctrine?

PALIN: In what respect, Charlie?

GIBSON: The Bush -- well, what do you -- what do you interpret it to be?

PALIN: His world view.

GIBSON: No, the Bush doctrine, enunciated September 2002, before the Iraq war.

PALIN: I believe that what President Bush has attempted to do is rid this world of Islamic extremism, terrorists who are hell bent on destroying our nation. There have been blunders along the way, though. There have been mistakes made. And with new leadership, and that's the beauty of American elections, of course, and democracy, is with new leadership comes opportunity to do things better.

GIBSON: The Bush doctrine, as I understand it, is that we have the right of anticipatory self-defense, that we have the right to a preemptive strike against any other country that we think is going to attack us. Do you agree with that?

PALIN: Charlie, if there is legitimate and enough intelligence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country. In fact, the president has the obligation, the duty to defend.

As far as I know there is nothing firm on that, only hints, and a small number of legal aliens have enlisted in hopes of citizenship. I guess they have more faith in promises from Bush than I do.

"Even in a political culture accustomed to truth-stretching, McCain's skirting of facts has stood out this week. It has infuriated and flustered Obama's campaign, and campaign pros are watching to see how much voters disregard news reports noting factual holes in the claims."

Story on Yahoo's front page. Read, forward, and enjoy.

Saint Augustine's picture

This is what I heard:

They explained the imbalance of social classes (poor vs rich) in the make up of the military, the lowering of standards in educational requirements (no mention of felons now serving) and the problem of meeting manpower needs.

McCain wants to fix the recruitment problem by increasing the size of the military? Without a draft! By increasing reenlistment incentives and useing solutions like they did with pilots in the 70's (pay them more).

He's against compulsory service requirements for our citizens but wants people to volunteer on their own, hoping private (businesses) and other non-governmental organizations (religious and charitable organizations).

Growing up knowing one will have to "serve the nation" can have great benefits to the nation and to those facing service. There will be options in the service requirements beyond the existing options in military service (different branches). Perhaps service as a community organizer for several years (LMFAO), Peace Corps type service or WPA and CCC type endeavors that either benefits a group of citizens or provides training in a marketable skill. Young people will be encouraged to think about their options and have ample time examine the options they have.

Having begun this while McLame was on, Obama is now expressing my very thoughts. I yield to him.

Sarah's picture

Palin is a sicko (McCain too)

You see, the city of Wasilla, didn't want to "burden" taxpayers with having to support victims of rape. Yes, they were more interested in lowering taxes. It would have cost the city between $5,000 and $14,000 a year to pay for the rape victims' police medical exams. And if the City of Wasilla, circa the year 2000, wants to go there in terms of balancing rape vs, burdening taxpayers, you should know that each and every Alaskan gets a check from the state government each year, it contains their portion of that year's oil revenues.

Bloggers have been writing for a few days about reports that Sarah Palin's town charged rape victims for forensic exams when she was mayor. Now former Alaska Governor Tony Knowles has come out in support of the story. McClatchy reports:

Two state leaders lashed out at the public record of Gov. Sarah Palin on Wednesday as witnesses in a new "Alaska Mythbusters" forum coordinated by supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Speaking to a teleconference audience of reporters around the nation, former Gov. Tony Knowles and current Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein -- both Democrats -- accused Palin of misleading the public in her new role as the vice presidential running mate of Arizona Sen. John McCain.

While some of their complaints have already been aired, Knowles broke new ground while answering a reporter's question on whether Wasilla forced rape victims to pay for their own forensic tests when Palin was mayor.

True, Knowles said.

Eight years ago, complaints about charging rape victims for medical exams in Wasilla prompted the Alaska Legislature to pass a bill -- signed into law by Knowles -- that banned the practice statewide.

"There was one town in Alaska that was charging victims for this, and that was Wasilla," Knowles said.

USA Today has more:

According to the sponsor, Democrat Eric Croft, the law was aimed in part at Wasilla, where now-Gov. Sarah Palin was mayor. When it was signed, Wasilla's police chief expressed displeasure.

...

"In retrospect, I would have asked the female working-mother mayor of that town why her police chief was against this," said Croft, the former Anchorage state representative.

Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella said in an e-mail that the governor "does not believe, nor has she ever believed, that rape victims should have to pay for an evidence-gathering test."

"Gov. Palin's position could not be more clear," she said. "To suggest otherwise is a deliberate misrepresentation of her commitment to supporting victims and bringing violent criminals to justice."

Comella would not answer other questions, including when Palin learned of Wasilla's policy or whether she tried to change it. The campaign cited the governor's record on domestic violence, including increasing funding for shelters.

And US News tells readers that, while Wasilla was the only town in Alaska with this foul policy, it isn't the only place in the U.S..

The Jed Report finds the connection to John McCain:

In 1994, John McCain voted against legislation -- pushed through Congress by Joe Biden -- that helped put an end to the practice of charging rape victims for sexual assault exams.

Twisted as it may sound, charging victims for a forensic exam was a real problem. For example, as AMERICAblog has documented (and the media is now reporting), when Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla, the town charged rape victims for the exams.

Biden's legislation required that state, local, and Indian governments provide the rape exams to victims free of charge as a condition of receiving federal funds under the Violence Against Women Act. In 2000, Alaska finally passed state legislation in order to qualify for federal funding.

McCain not only opposed Biden's legislation, but also has voted against funding it as recently as October 2007.

Joe Biden is truly for women

What the hell has Lieberman been doing?? I thought he was tutoring her. He was probably too busy looking at her "best credentials."

he should keep mentioning the gi bill on these military questions

I heard on the Peter B show today that the McCain camp is e-mailing people about absentee ballots.
Does anyone know anymore about this? Peter B wants people to get in touch with him if they've been e-mailed about this.
If you have received one of these SAVE IT!

This is going on in several of the swing states. If you get one, contact your local democrat office and possibly your local media.

Being a military man, I kind of agree with McCain, as far as allowing students the option of ROTC.

if the students want the option of ROTC, they won't go to Columbia.

i am sure there are students who go to columbia and alum who contribute to columbia specifically because it does not permit rotc.

Absentee ballots are legal, and often recommended - at least here in the Golden State. We also have early voting, about a month before the official date.

I have done both

Charlie sounded offensive tonight and was interrupting Palin. What was Bush doctrine, Charlie? Or for that matter what was George Washington's doctrine or the FDRs?

It was always social, economical, or religious factors were involved.

I am not sure if Charlie was trying to be a snort or he might have been nervous with mixed emotions.

I thought Palin did well to say that we may have to go after Russia. Russia is a threat globally. Folks, be prepared to be drafted.

In addition, Palin stuck to her answer about Israel's self defense in times of war and Charlie had to swallow the hard pill.

Obama is very clear and on point and offer a plan. McCain offered nothing and had no vision for the future. McCain has nothing to offer this country. I hope people of this country wake up and see McCain is an empty suit.

Investing in education is all the investment we have left.

Good for Barack!
He would NOT say that McCain could serve in his cabinet!
SPEAKING TRUTH about the other guy! I love it!

I swear that McCain sounded like he was going to have a stroke, confused, not completing sentances, and not staying on topic.

What makes you think Russia is a threat to the US?
As for Israel, I wish those folks would negotiate a peace with their neighbors . I'm sick and tired of all the trouble there.
Both parties are guilty. It's easy to hate.

Yes, so do I use them, but the applications aren't being mailed to me by the GOP or McCain's campaign. There is lots of reasons not to mail it in to a return address provided by them.

I think 'community' infers 'local'

Answering in more than a few words...works at Saddleback where words are hard to understand and confusing, but works very well among the thinking people here.

#131 point taken. That I agree with. Should not be partisan

Just watch the likes of O'Reilly and Hannity -- they NEVER listen, they just preach.

I cannot stand David Gregory! He apologizes for McCain and promotes McCain. Too bad his boss Griffin loves the guy.
