B’Tselem: Israel Expanding Settlements
In Israel and the Occupied Territories, the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem says it’s collected new evidence of Israeli settlement expansion on Palestinian land. B’Tselem executive director Jessica Montel says twelve settlements east of the Israeli wall through the West Bank have been expanded.
B’Tselem executive director Jessica Montel: “It is not new houses necessarily, in terms of the expansion, but new lands have been taken around very many settlements, both in an official way that Israel is erecting new fences around settlements as a security measure."
Israel had previously pledged to freeze settlement expansion but now maintains that promise only applies to settlements it doesn’t want to keep. Israeli government spokesperson Yigal Palmor rejected the allegations and said Palestinians have the right to challenge settlement expansion in Israeli courts.
Yigal Palmor: “The status of these issues, the settlements and the Palestinian territories, in general, is currently under negotiation between Israelis and Palestinians, and whatever security measures that are taken on the ground do not effect these negotiations. At any rate, if any person, whether a landowner or other, if any person feels that their rights are being breached by these constructions, they can appeal to the Supreme Court of Israel."
Palestinian landowner Issa Slaiby said the Israeli court rulings are irrelevant to realities on the ground.
Issa Slaiby: “In 2005, we got a ruling from the Supreme Court that allows us to farm our lands, and this ruling stands and includes the landowners. Regardless of that, the Israeli Defense Forces, or what is called the
Israeli Defense Forces, prevent us from farming our land.”
War Crimes Probe Urged for Ex-Israeli Army Chief
In other news from Israel, calls are growing for a probe into whether Transportation Minister and leading prime ministerial candidate Shaul Mofaz ordered “war crimes” while serving as the Israeli military’s chief of staff. Earlier this year, reports emerged Mofaz instructed Israeli troops to kill seventy Palestinians a day during the Second Intifada. In May 2001, Mofaz reportedly gave a briefing to senior West Bank army commanders and said he wanted ten slain Palestinians a day in each of the seven territorial brigade areas. David Kretzmer, emeritus professor of international law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, says the accounts of Mofaz’s order add to speculation he could have “committed serious offenses, some of which at least, fall into the category of war crimes.” The calls for investigating Mofaz come as Israeli police have recommended indicting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on corruption charges.

It looks like Lehman might get the big prize this weekend. Love letters from the Treasury in the form of a bailout. I didn't buy their worthless stock when it wasn't worthless, what makes the Treasury Department think I want them to buy it for me now? This I believe is the plan, bail out EVEYONE that fails, run up such a huge deficit that NO ONE will borrow the U.S. a penny. Then claim national security and pump all of Social Security into the mess. Tell everyone we had to pay the Chinese, Russians, Japanese and British off so we could avoid a 'depression'. In exchange we get worthless stocks in bankrupted financial institutions et. al. Then we get a depression anyhow.....
I have started a personal log that will keep track of McCain ads that are truthful, and/or specific, in policy proposals that will benefit the middle class and working poor.
As of this date and time, I am still without my first entry. Fifty some days left though.........
In the context of the "control of the news cycle", these were the three sweetest words I've ever seen beginning one of those bottom-of-the-screen textcrawl headlines:
"JOHN MCCAIN DEFENDED..."
LOL I can't believe it. The news angle has actually become McCain/Palin's lying, not the lies and how Obama deals with them. Barbara Walters remembered she had journalistic abilities and "Charlie" Gibson did his job, too. "JOHN MCCAIN DEFENDED" his "erroneous" ads. The very next blurb was a fact that contradicted him.
In other words, McCain is now being forced to defend his positions, instead of attacking Obama and forcing him to respond defensively.

But they missed the an incredible opportunity when Senator McCain asked "how have I changed, how have I changed"
Why they did not challenge him on this selective enforcement of laws, investigations and enforcement of our laws. McCain has not supported the investigations of the outing of Valerie Plame and has not pushed for the Bush administrations to hand over documents that Democratic Senators and Congress men and women have been demanding. The documents that the Bush administration refuses to hand over in regard to the politicization of the Dept of Justice, the dismissal of subpoenas by Meirs, Rove, Bolton. The continued refusal by these people to testify. Did you ever hear Senator McCain push for the investigation of the false pre-war intelligence that was used to lie our nation into an unnecessary and immoral war? Did McCain push for this. Has McCain pushed for the individuals who cherry picked, and disseminated this false intelligence. Have you ever heard McCain push for the investigation of the source of those "niger documents".
hell no! McCain supports selective enforcement of laws and investigations. This is a man who supported the investigation of a President who lied under oath about a BLOWJOB yet has done everything in his power to stand in the way of holding people in his own party who were responsible for a WMD INTELLIGENCE SNOWJOB. The result of that intelligence snowjob has been the unnecessary and immoral loss of over 4000 American soldiers, 30,ooo -50,ooo injured American soldiers, over a million Iraqi people who are dead as a direct result of this invasion and 5 million Iraqi refugees.

Conyers and the rest of the Dems demanding oversight and access to these documents are pissing around.
