Dennis Shulman Runs A Hard Race Against Right Wing Extremist
By Howie Klein Sunday Sep 14, 2008 4:00pm
Yesterday's NY Times focused on the differences between McCain's willful inability to send e-mails-- he uses the regular excuse he uses for all his shortcomings, that he was tortured in Hanoi-- with that our one of Blue America's highest priority congressional candidates, Dennis Shulman of New Jersey, who was completely blind by the time he was 15. Dennis is a computer whiz who believes in solving problems, not looking for pity and excuses. But Dennis isn't running against John McCain; he's running against the last hard-core right-wing extremist House member left in the Northeast, Scott Garrett.
On Friday Garrett was in the news because he was the only New Jersey congressman-- from either party-- who voted against funding the Highway Trust. The 28 others were a motley crew of mostly far right Confederates who oppose the very concept of government playing a positive role in citizens' lives-- like in maintaining bridges and highways. Garrett is often at odds with mainstream notions about the role of government and he is often found voting alone with a small handful of radical right kooks from Georgia, Texas and South Carolina.
Even if the DCCC hasn't, the Times pieces will help galvanize moderates and independent voters behind Dennis. Crooks & Liars readers have been on the case since last November.
If you'd like to continue helping this brilliant, no-excuses, blind rabbi from the Jersey suburbs get his message out, our Blue America ActBlue page is open... 24/7.

What if it McCain was faced with a situation where he had to launch nuclear missiles in response to a Russian attack?
"I can't do it - my arms don't work because I was a POW for five BLAMMMMMMM"
OK McCain was tortured. Was he ever waterboarded? Serious, was he? If not then why? Was it considered to inhumane too barbaric by the torturers? Then why is it OK for us to do?
Stop saying that John McCain was tortured. Since he was treated the way the the U.S. treats its guests in Guantanamo, it should be obvious by now that he was "extraordinarily renditioned."
geazer @ 3:
"Enhancedly interrogated."
McCain's excuse that he can't type because he was a POW is an insult to the scores of people who have put sweat and tears into assistive technologies.
Fuck him...
Most times, even with a handicap, people can find a way to overcome something if they have the desire. McCain showed us his veto pen, so if he can write, he can probably learn to use a computer if he wanted to. People learn to use a computer who are paraplegic. It can be done if the desire is sincere.
Karl Rove warned yesterday that the ad Obama is running about McCain not using a computer could backfire on Obama because McCain's POW injuries keep him from having the agility in his hands to type. I wonder if McCain ever typed something on a typewriter after he left Vienam.
My aunt who was so disfigured with rheumatoid arthritis that she could not walk and could barely feed herself, typed. She was slow, but she was determined and she did it.
There is a joke among the computing community:
"If you come up with a system that is idiot-proof, God will design a better idiot"
McCain must be a very advanced prototype by god.
Only in America a person that finished at the bottom of his promotion, who crashed a plane per year of flying, who was at the center of one of the worst accidents in US Navy history, whose only achievement seems to have been to be captured by the enemy, and who is so dumb that he can't even manage one of the most important communication technologies rutinelly used by hundreds (if not billions) of people on a daily basis around the world... Only in this country such a fool would be considered by scores of people to be the front runner to guide us from one of the worst political, military, and economic crisis in the short history of our country.
Since McCain's most recent vote on torture was in favor of it, he must believe it produces truthful information. When he was tortured, he spouted anti-American propaganda. Does that mean he believes everything he said, or at least that he did at the time?
Kos has a photo up of the McCain gathering in Jacksonville today. It's just a pitiful little crowd. I bet he and Palin will be appearing together again real soon. His circus needs his side show to draw in the people.
Queen Elizabeth II learned to use the internet and e-mail about 4 years ago and by all accounts has used it regularly since. In fact she has adopted and adopted to whatever communications media has arisen, the internet being just the latest. Of course never having been a POW I guess Her Majesty hasn't been as constrained as McCain has been. I'm just sayin....
If John McCain was so tortured, why then can he BBQ? I thought to flip burgers, and all you need your hands. Give me a break. Just another excuse.
The first person I made close friends with on the inter net was an 82 year old gentleman. We emailed and chatted every day. When I would have a problem doing something on the computer I would go to him for help.
We became very close friends but never met one another or spoke on the phone. I looked to him as the father and grandfather I always wanted to have. He taught me so much about music, art and literature. He was my treasure. He died almost two years ago, but to this day when I write something for a post, I can almost feel him doing what he always used to do, encouraging me and at the same time pointing out where I could do better.
Britisher @ 10:
McCain will ride that POW pony until it dies of exhaustion....
Queen Elizabeth II has more than proven herself to be an adaptable intelligent honorable person....
Is there any way we can swap you for McCain if only for a day of sanity...
I'll throw in a pint or two....
Tell me again, since obama is panning McCain because he isn't computer literate....how come he didn't pick Bill Gates for his VP?????????
we all know that mcfuckhead is suffering from
that horrible disability know as
the lying, greedy, whose-hand-is-up-my-butt,
i'll-win-anyway-i-can disease.
commonly known as reichwingneocon fascist bigot syndrome.
pissed off patricia @ 12:
That's wonderful you have such a mentor....I'm not that religious but I do believe influential people in anyone's life have the capacity to guild you (& protect) long after their lives have been completed....
Howie Klein
wants to transfer money from you to his preferred candidates.
Do it if you want.
Question the system if you want.
VietVet8666 @ 17:
You're not kidding this time are you?----
Is the Coast Clear?--- @ 18:
No, I'm not fucking kidding.
Is the Coast Clear?--- @ 16:
He was an amazing man and I was so fortunate to have known him even for a precious few years. I'm not religious either. I just feel his influence on me through all that he taught me. It's the same way I feel about my grandmother who died many years ago. She was more of a mother to me than my own mother ever was. She taught me to be who I am. She taught me to just lift my skirts and step over problems or mud in the road, but to never lower myself to getting dirty. That lesson comes in handy almost every day.
As for McCain's ability to type on a keyboard, I just saw him at some stump speech today, might have been in Jacksonville. He raised his hand to wave at the crowd as he always does and he pointed at someone. If he can do that, point his finger, he could manage to type. It might be slow, but he could do it if he wanted to.
VietVet8666 @ 19:
Testy, aren't we....trying to start another fight?....don't bother....
When thinking of hard-core right wing extremists in the Northeast, don't forget Chris Shays of Connecticut. He talks a good moderate game, but don't listen to his words, watch his votes.
Coast at 21,
Not intending to start a fight.
I like your posts.
Apologies for my over-the-tops.
In years gone by, in saner times, would anyone have given someone like Sarah Palin a second glance? I don't think so. I think the fact that she is being considered as a viable candidate says way more about our country than most of us want to admit. This whole atmosphere frightens me and makes me glad I have been alive as long as I have. I'm not sure I want to see how the next fifty years plays out.
I cannot begin to tell you all how glad I am to see Dennis getting coverage. Garrett is the biggest wingnut in the NY area. Anyone with any extra time please please call the campaign and help him get his message out. Garrett's gotta go.
Shulman for Congress
Several years ago Scott Garrett was at a town hall type meeting in a school in the more rural part of his district out by PA when a several constituents complained to him about the physical condition of the school. Garrett responded that if they didn't like the public schools, they should home-school their kids like he does.
Garrett's voting record makes him unfit for reelection. Shulman is a bright well spoken man who can take up the long dormant job of representing the interests of the 5th congressional district of NJ.
VietVet8666 @ 17:
Umm, I know Dennis and he is a wonderful progressive candidate with many years of helping people to help themselves. He's a problem solver and he also cares about ethics. He has an outstanding track-record of getting things done. So, why wouldn't we want such a person in congress? I hope everyone donates-- the RNC is giving Garrett a lot of bucks, whereas Dennis isn't exactly a multi-millionaire and has never taken dime one from big oil the way Garrett did... Just sayin'.
Republicans are the kings of excuse-making.
Marge @ 14:
because gates isn't a politician... did you reeeeally need that explanation...?... or are you just being a troll...?... if mcliar doesn't know the fundamentals of computer use, how can anyone expect him to understand what policies are the most effective for an industry that has fundamentally changed not only industry but society on a global scale...?... iow... how can you not see this as a glaring negative...?... and puh-leeze, do make an effort to consider your response before proving you haven't the slightest clue what sort of issues that a "presidunt" faces and just how dangerous it is to have someone who can't look the religious right straight in the eye and say... "no, creationism is not science and it has no place in the classroom as scientific curricula and it most definitely has no bearing on the theory of evolution"... if that isn't enough for you, then i suggest you take some basic courses in elementary science... perhaps afterward, you might begin to be able appreciate just how dangerous it is to have a vp who's a speaking-in-tongues religious freak who belongs to a sect that believes alaska is a safe haven from armageddon...
I’m a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chest down for the last four years. I have virtually no grip in my hands, which are atrophied and curled into fists. I’m typing this with one thumb. There’s also voice activation software available, which I use in my full time job as an attorney.
In the disabled community, McCain would be known as a can’t do whiner.
