Actually, it's not very well edited. And to be honest, McCain's bumbling just makes it worse. I liked the other ad that came out this morning better.

Let's see. God sent hurricane "Staff of God" to disrupt the Republican convention right after the Focus on the Family Christofascist prayed for rain on the Democratic convention. Then God sent hurricane Ike to Phil Gramm and George Bush's home state of Texas. Then God sent the markets crashing the worst since 911 and the Great Depression right before the election.

Now if all this were happening to the Democrats when the Democrats had the White House and all 3 branches of government for most of the past decade right before an election what would Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and McCain's pastor Hagee be saying? God's sending a message to vote Democratic or feel his wrath maybe?

Read the whole thing before your pants find themselves in a wad. The bill only allows drilling 50 miles or more offshore and with the state's approval.

_Included in the bill is the $18 billion roll back of tax give aways for the oil companies

_Require the release of oil from the government's Strategic Petroleum Reserve to try to push down gasoline prices.

_Make it a federal crime for oil companies holding federal leases to provide gifts to government employees, a response to a recent sex and drug scandal involving the federal office that oversees the offshore oil royalty program and energy company employees.

_Provide tax credits for wind and solar energy industries, the development of cellulose ethanol and other biofuels.

_Require utilities nationwide to generate 15 percent of their electricity from solar, wind or other alternative energy source.

_Give tax breaks for new energy efficiency programs including the use of improved building codes and for companies that promote their employees use of bicycles for commuting.

From a strategery stand point I think it's pretty slick for democrats, not known recently as the party of great strategery.

Exactly right. I was taught in grade school that after the stock market crash of 1929 Congress enacted laws to keep it from ever happening again. If Gramm dismantled these laws and is McCain's economic adviser that is the message that should be out there in the forefront.

Get back to the war and weave it together with why the economy is so screwed up for Christ’s sake.
Earmarks for the country of Georgia. That is what McBush is talking about. Earmarks for Iraq while they are sitting on $80,000,000,000 in New York banks. Why am I paying for Iraq’s infrastructure.
Why am I paying for Alaska’s infrastructure. Palin got over $200 per person in earmarks for Alaskans meanwhile she handed out checks for $1200 dollars to each of them last week. How come Joe Sixpack and Betty Winebox don’t know this???

This is all too vague and general. It feels like a game of gotcha, not a serious debate. I want to see the specific ideas that McCain has that are so terrible, like privatizing social security and taxing health care, then end the ad with an out of touch McCain saying the fundamentals are strong. That will resonate. I also want to see ads that give me good reasons to vote for Obama if I'm worried about the economy. There's plenty of them.

This is wrong people. Yes, the ad is powerful, but the reason it is powerful is the fundamental thing that is wrong with the political process. We should challenge uninformed voters to become more involved and educated about the candidates, instead of succumbing to a level of negativity in order to sway some voters. This only feeds and allows for the problem. Obama's candidacy had such drawing power because it promised for a better tomorrow for our children and future generations, and part of that future is not supposed to resort to politics such as this. I think he should go back to his original message that inspired people so easily. Watch his Iowa primary speech and then watch this ad right after - you'll get what I mean.

Well, that was a DNC ad.

Cafferty had it spot on 3 months ago and now things are even worse. Gas has gone down a bit, but only because of the slow down in consumption.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OV37QSDN14&feature=related

I wonder what Eric who wrote in thinks now, now that unemployment is even worse since June and the markets keep failing. I still don't get how anyone can believe in this joke called McCain. He's not even funny.

nickpoppagorgiofromyuma's picture

Let's just cut through through the bullshit. McCain will win this election because of one reason and one reason only. Obama is black. When you hear that 1 in 4 West Virginians say race is an issue, and 1 in 10 from Ohio and Pennsylvania say the same thing (and that's the ones who'll ADMIT it), he doesn't stand a chance. He should be 20 points up on these two dolts. And I'm a white guy.

The other thing that pisses me off is the Clintons sitting by the wayside with a big smile on their faces watching their party go down in flames just to set up her next run. And now I see one of Hillary's biggest supporters is going to endorse McCain tomorrow. We're so fucking dead...

Rico's picture

Missing from this ad are "real people", sitting around a kitchen table piled high with bills as they watch McCain on TV repeat the "fundamentaly strong" line. Their jaws drop and they shake their heads.

That's why there hasn't been the connection that everyone is talking about. Winning in politics is about establishing relationships with likely voters. If you recall, Hillary did her best late in the primaries featuring ads with "real people" talking about their own lives and why they support her. It's all about relationships.

I think the ad was not very good. I do believe the fundamentals are strong. I am from a middle class family and from what I have seen we have not been hurting at all. Other then high gas prices which still aren't hurting us that bad, the economy seems ok to me.

Are you out of your nut? Any one of these would be awful:

3 of the 5 biggest investment banks have gone bankrupt or collapsed and had to be sold.

The Dow Jones lost 542 points yesterday! (MORE THAN 4.4%)

The Dow ended the day at 10,917.51. Just to give you an idea of how bad that is:

When Clinton took office, it was at 3,241.95.
When Bush took over, it was at 10,578.24.
In SEVEN YEARS, it's gone up 300 points, less than it dropped yesterday.

(In other words, you'd actually be better off after taxes saving your money under your bed than putting it into a broad mutual fund.)

One in 11 mortgages in the U.S. is delinquent or in foreclosure.

Median price for existing homes fell by 7.1% in the past year.

The national average gasoline price when Bush took office was $1.46 per gallon. Now it's more than $4 in some places.

Prices for everything are up 24.5% since Bush took office.

U.S. lost 605,000 jobs in the first eight months of 2008.

Unemployment is up to over 6%.

The budget deficit has more than doubled in the last year last year.

Take your pick. I'm sure there are more to choose from.

Agreed. How about segueing into Herbert Hoover quotes juxtaposed with McCain's, with images of Depression-era families on breadlines. It would certainly put the fear into the white haired ladies that lived through the 1930's (most of whom are voting for McSame.)

Yeah, but the Repubs will have a field day with it, and the Hillary "supporters" that are on the fence will jump at this for a reason. I just don't know how in the world we are EVER going to get the knuckle-dragging mouth breathing so-called "working class (see: dumb white guy) Democrat to vote for Obama. I get the feeling that if McCain and Cribou Barbie just stood up there during the debates and said "no-comment" to every question, it still wouldn't matter. I wish I could have your optimism. I live in Illinois, so this state is decided. But it's the Pennsylvanias, Ohios, Michigans, Floridas, and now Wisconsins that are killing us. My God, how many manufacturing jobs do these states have to lose? Obama needs help from the Clintons...lot's of it. And the biggestthing he needs...TURNOUT BY THE YOUNG VOTE!!! It's their future that is being decided here, Barack needs to bring that up everytime he talks.

I also love the idea of tying Hoover's and McCain's comments together showing Black & White movie reels of people starving and standing in bread lines. If that doesn't scare them...

Bad ad. People probably don't believe the "fundamentals" are bad. They know that economies have ups and downs. McCain has promised you all ponies and it will all be okay.

Daniel Hamlow's picture

Not sure if this is an effective ad. For the most part, it's a repeated mantra of McSame saying the economy is strong, which in turn seems to be a message more for him, rather than a "vote for Obama ad." Phil Gramm's quote about Americans being a nation of whiners comes too late, at the end. Needs more editing and a rethink to be more effective.

Yeah, to the voter looking for answers, McCain could sound reassuring here instead of out of touch. People don't want forecasts of gloom and doom, they want to know that everything will be all right. What's missing is Obama's message of hope. Not a smart move, this ad.

brantl's picture

The tag lines should have been: "John McCain and advisors don't have a clue, and they wouldn't know where to buy one.".

mocasdad's picture

brilliant....80 percent of the ad is devoted to McCain repeating his message; a paltry remainder has an unnarrated text graphic at the end.

Does anyone in the democratic party know how to frame a message? You've got to make it personal to the voter you're targeting...the auto worker, the tech person who's job got oursourced, the single mom with no child care. For the people who've been foreclosed out of their homes, you've got to make them understand that it was mccain's guy phil gramm who caused the problem; put THAT in juxtaposition with his whining comment.

I don't mean to sound condescending, because I certainly don't...but how many low information voters truly understand what's happening in the financial markets? Yes, they know it's bad, but do they truly understand the cause and effect on their lives? If so, great, but that doesn't mean you don't reinforce the point for them.

Good lord, I've never seen such weak advertising min my life.

If you want to "win" elections in this country you need:

- control of the media
- control of media polls
- callers to jam opposition phone banks at get out the vote time
- smear telephone "polls" that insinuate that a candidate is
- control of voting machine setup and distribution
- control of voter registration rolls
- the backing of Diebold Election Systems Premier Election Solutions

It worked in the last two elections, it will work again, no matter how fundamentally strong our economy is.

GlobalH's picture

@117 mocasdad is on the money, sadly.

Too much of the advertising I've seen has been set up to IMPLY a message and in cases like this, you have to just STATE it, not only through juxtapositions (after every McCain repetition, show an example of why it's not), plus STRONG NARRATION of the message at the end.

Unfortunately, treating people as if they've got the common sense to take away the message you THINK they should take away the message is misguided. When there's any wiggle room, people will take away the message they WANT to see. And I'm afraid that Stockholm Syndrome is starting to set in here.

Seriously. Why would anyone in their right mind hand over the govenence of their country to a guy who needs a long nap and a draconian stepford robot rather than two highly intelligent, educated and qualified candidates like Obama/Biden?

I have to agree that the first time I watched it I wondered if it was a mcsame commercial. A lot of the tv viewing zombies are only going to take the "economy is fundamentally strong" message away from this.

Exactly. The inbreds in the swing states they're running these in need it spelled out for them in big print at an 8th grade reading level. Sheesh.

rj's picture

This ad is ok. I agree with a previous poster who said the other fundamentals ad was better. Both ads should have a clip of Bush saying the exact same phrase in 2007. "the fundamentals of our economy are strong". It would be a great way to tie them together.

For that matter you could do an entire ad of Bush speaking and then McCain repeating the same talking point word for word. He has done it for years now.

Taint My Fault's picture

Why no clips of Chimpy saying the exact same thing? Why did we stop tying McBush to Chimpy? That was the perfect opening to stick some vid of Chimpy saying the exact same words...

Like this (August 10, 2007):

"The American economy is the envy of the world, and we need to keep it that way," Bush said, conceding that "I'm not an economist'' but maintaining that he sees strong basic indicators in the state of the economy. "The fundamentals of our economy are strong. ... Job creation is strong. Real after-tax wages are on the rise. Inflation is low."

And with these words the president headed out for an August break, starting in Kennebunkport, Maine, last night and moving on to Crawford, Texas, next week. "

The economy is FUNDAMENTALLY STRONG.

With one, sometimes two, large private institution being nationalized every week, and each installed headed with a pro Bush McCain staffer, they will have a fundamentally strong regime. Strong enough to bend public's will, and turn this country into Communism, eh, Fascism,..... eh Theocracy.

Let's see 45+ days left, that's 7 weeks, 7 more large private institutions, say GM (transport), BlueCross (health), Hearst (media), etc. Each of which has lost more 50% of their value since the year began.

Steveo's picture

This ad is weak. It makes McCain look like someone who is trying his best to bolster confidence in a weakened economy. They need to really show how out of touch the guy is. Put in a few of those clips where he admits that he doesn't know what he's talking about. Use other clips of him saying things that *demonstrate* that he doesn't know what's happening. Find something similar to Bush telling the woman with three jobs how uniquely American and fantastic she is.

Gotta hit harder and smarter, guys.

I agree with recent postings. This is an ineffective ad. It can be interpreted by those viewers who aren't paying close attention -- who do not sit in rapture when teevee ads come on; i.e., almost all of us --as actually in support of McCain. The mumbling Gramm at the end then become some kind of afterthought, and if you don't have the volume up, you could think it was an endorsement.

Who is the agency who thought this up? Fire them or the d*mbf*ck person who forced them into making it NOW.

Time is running out, Obama "pros". This election should be an absolute no-brainer, and it's turning into a disaster.

And what's with the 49 seconds' length? Since when can you buy a 49 second ad on the teevee?

Alas, I fear that you may be correct.

But at some point, the more "intellectual" states need to start considering a reverse secession... and leave all this dead weight that is the bible belt behind. I am sure they should offer some sort of amnesty/relocation programs to save the few decent and intelligent people who have had to live in such a sea of ineptitude.

Agree with posters above that this ad is not very good. I see it as a waste of money, frankly. This ad assumes its audience is a lot more aware of esoterica/nuance than it probably is. I'm afraid most slack-jawed TV viewers will see it as an endorsement of McCain. The GOP has done really well repeating a lie over and over. In this ad McCain is repeating "the economy is fundamentally strong" over and over.

The GOP doesn’t win over and over by overestimating the intelligence of the average viewer. No wonder the Dems are seen to be elitist.

Very disappointing.

You want an ad?......run clips of McCain endorsing one thing, then run a clip where he's endorsing the exact opposite. There are lots and lots of examples. Then POINT OUT TO THE VIEWER that McCain is a flip-flopper, or a panderer, or will change any position to get elected, etc.....

As an Obama supporter and a marketing creative director, this is not a 'great' spot. It's sloppy. Think like conservatives--simple, clean, repeatable message.

It should begin with the facts--in graphics show the numbers of job losses, home foreclosures, bank insolvencies, bankruptcies, etc...coincides with the copy: "The numbers don't lie. The nation is struggling. But after 8 years of President Bush's failed economic policies, there's only one thing John McCain can say...cut to him: "The fundamentals of our economy are strong." Then the tag: "Can you really survive 4 more years of this?" Then cut back to McCain from the Repub debates: "The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should." Then the tag: "Barack Obama--Real Ideas, Real Change." And make sure you put the web address of his economic plan on the screen.
