The Obama and McCain campaigns have agreed to an unusual free-flowing format for the three televised presidential debates, which begin on Friday, but the McCain camp fought for and won a much more structured approach for the questioning at the vice-presidential debate, advisers to both campaigns said Saturday.
At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates. McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive.
Don't you think McCain should have thought of that before he picked her for his VP? Once again the American people are cheated out of an honest discussion of the issues.

I don't know the rules of debates, but wouldn't it be a smart move to force a more in depth debate between Biden and Palin? I mean, she's the most qualified Republican for the VP job and shouldn't have any problems at all. Right?

That's exactly what I've been thinking. I'm torn between wanting the current idiots out of power, but knowing that we are just at the beginning of some very shitty years (possibly decades) in this country. I'd rather have the whole thing tank under McCain than under Obama. All the inbred, moron racists in this country (the same ones who are still blaming Clinton for everything) will use it to justify their racism, because when a liberal is president he or she is immediately personally responsible for all the evils befalling the country. When a conservative is in power, the liberal who came before is. That's just the way they roll.
That said, I do agree with the poster that liberals can't be holding their heads very high in all this, either. Congress totally abdicated their role years ago and both sides are to blame. As representatives of the people, they just plain suck. An argument could be made that we have been experiencing taxation without representation for some time now and there was a time when those were fighting words. I would LOVE to see a full page ad in the major dailies from U.S. citizens (since our representatives aren't up to it) explaining our contractual demands in return for the $700 billion bailout (and you know this is just 'seed' money--it's gonna be much more). Sort of a "we'll give you the money, but here are the conditions" thing:
1. In recognition of their complete f*$k waddery, CEOs and brokers of and advisers to the rescued financial institutions will repay 100% of their illegally and fradulently acquired commissions, plus a 20% f*$k waddery surcharge and a 10% 'administrative' fee (they should be familiar with these make believe line items becasue they're the ones who initiated their use).
2. Future salaries for financial executives will be commensurate with training and experience. Since, based on your balance sheets, your level of skill indicates negative training and experience, you will be paying us from now on.
3. In re: to Mr. Paulson asserting that he will have complete say over how and to whom our money is dispersed with no recourse to review or legal action. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Good one, Mr. Paulson. You are such a card. What? You're shitting us? YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT THIS?
Well in that case: NO WAY, NO HOW, NO CHANCE. You want our money, you WILL be subject to review by whomever and in whatever way we deem appropriate. Look dude, you're not dealing with a lame ass Congress here. We are the People and, whatever they might be stupid enough to do, we're not stupid enough to give you (former Chairman of Goldman Sachs) lots of our money to distribute to your friends (who f*$ked up royally while you were one of them) with no "adult supervision." 4. And while we're at it, Mr. Paulson, an annual report to Congress is not sufficient. We want an independent auditing agency set up with the teeth to force compliance, quarterly reports about how your great plan is working and a website where all activities are recorded for public view. And a public stockade for pelting tomatoes at the most egregious of the f*$k wads.
5. Oh, and don't pull the panic crap on us--we've fallen for that gimmick one too many times. It took you guys years to fuck this up, we deserve more than one weekend to come up with plan. If it truly is going to go all to hell in handbasket within 48 hours, well then we guess you should've maybe said something sooner, huh?

The debates have been rigged for the Republicans. Tom Brokaw is a scumbag, and Bob Shieffer has been outed as a McCain Media shill.
With the momentum shifting back to Obama in a big way, it was starting look like the debates would deliver the knockout blow for McCain. But all this fucking around with the format has made it almost impossible to achieve that now. Obama's gonna stick to the isuues, McCain's gonna attack him personally and attempt trip him up. McCain can't win on the issues, he needs the voters to question Obama's character and past associations. He's basically got 5 shots at manufacturing a Dukakis moment for Obama. If even one attack is half-succesful, FOX News and the MSM will blow it out of proportion, and Obama will be back on the defensive.
BTW, that's what these debates are shaping up to be - Obama on the defensive.

This is bullshit. McCain desperately needs these debates, Obama needs them not at all. Obama, who from my perspective holds all the debate cards, was in a position to totally dictate the entirety of the terms. He should have insisted that Palin, who will almost certainly end up in the oval office in very short order if McCain is elected, be made to stand on her own two feet. They woman is an empty-headed opportunist.
No matter, Biden will still eat her lunch. He needs, for the good of us all, to show the Republicans just exactly what it is like when their "pitbull" gets viciously mauled.
I think this is a non-issue. Biden should come out the clear winner in any format, if he has truth and substance on his side.
In any case, from what I've seen of Americans debating one-another, there needs to be a referee and some clear rules, or everyone will just talk at the same time and try to out-shout each other.

The real people behind the curtain write the speeches, make the rules, and pull the real strings, freely and totally unchallenged. Just don't "EVER" even THINK of getting anywhere even close, to where they have their secret meetings. You WILL probably be arrested attempting to try and plan to find out just what their exactly doing, BEFORE you even do it,...in your home by Swat teams, with door busters. They have the right to. You have no rights. They have complete secracy. You have NONE. Get used to it.

John McCain said that Sarah Palin knows more about energy than any other citizen in the United States. Surely Sarah could at least talk on the subject of energy in a loose debate format. Maybe on the subject of energy the debate could use a loose debate format, leaving the other topics in a structered format. This should have been considered in the negotiation on the format. Looks like Nancy Pelosi must have been in on the discussion as she will always bow to the what the Republicans want without question and then come out and tell citizens how "disappointed" she is in the Republicans.

With how much of a religious extremist Sarah Palin is, I'm surprised that the McCain/Palin Camp didn't demand that the VP debate focus solely on topics related to the Bible, and be held in a Evangelical church. After all it's not like Palin considers the concerns of non-Evangelical Americans as important. I wish there was a way that we could send Sarah Palin back in time to 1690's Massachusetts. Then she could experience what it is like to be the target of religious extremism.

I still think Biden will outshine Palin, as Obama will McCain. But I cannot believe the pure tokenism here. Can you IMAGINE if Hillary were the Dems' veep nominee and they tried to coerce the GOP into a shorter format for that debate? The GOP would be screaming bloody murder, saying she wanted special treatment because she was a woman.

Obama and Biden have been on the money this past week on the campaign trail. Both were teed up to go on the attack during the debates. The liberal blogs and the base were looking forward to seeing a potential knockout. But now, I can't see how they can achieve that. As long as the voters got to contrast and compare these candidates talk about the issues, Obama and Biden would come out the clear winners. I really think McCain's gonna throw the kitchen sink at Obama over the 3 debates. He can't afford for be judged on the issues.
Does anyone actually know what concessions Obama won, if any? I mean, talk about stacking the deck. This is Rev. Rick's Saddleback Sham all over again.

What might be is not what he said. He said she was presently and previously engaged in it. You're correct. I just dislike it when people throw a word around with no possible understanding of their meanings.
And there's quite a few differences between Stalin and her:
1) Stalin at least put his money where his goddamned mouth was. He was a revolutionary and fought in the Russian civil war.
2) Stalin was from the beginning displaying the sadism and brutality of his later years. He wasn't hestitant to kill as a kid. So, his killing millions of Russians and other Soviet nationalities were already present on a small scale.
3) Stalin had an inhuman disregard for life, but he was an effective leader. Palin can barely govern a tiny state like Alaska. Stalin was capable of governing a huge country like the USSR. Big difference between the capacities the two had already shown.
4) Stalin was realpolitik in its finest form. Palin's IMHO a True Believer. She's closer to Vladimir Lenin than Stalin in that regard. Stalin was a capable-enough politician to go from playing just his fellow revolutionaries on strings at the beginning, to playing all of Earth on them. Palin would barely be able to be dogcatcher.
5) Palin would not have the ability to enforce her decisions the way Stalin did. Starving millions of your own people is effective use of Terror as a political weapon. Palin....she's not got that level of balls.
kinda sounds like Mccain may have made the same agreement with Obama regarding the format of the dabates between palin and Biden that Obama made when he chickened out of all of the town hall meetings that Mccain offered to him. This is one of the first elections that I can remember in recent history that they did not have at least one townhall meeting. Guess they couldn't figure out a way to get a teleprompter for Obama. You liberals only see what you want and only listen to the Obama lovin media. Do your homework before you start talking about something you don't have a clue about or choose to ignore. I would like to know where this report about the debates came from. A reputable source? Can't always believe what you hear and read; especially on blogs.Maccain/Palin 2008
