Now McCain Wants To Postpone Palin's VP Debate

Dana Bash, CNN: I spoke with Senator Lindsey Graham, he is in the McCain campaign, he is negotiation -- is trying to negotiate with the Obama campaign and the presidential debate commission. What they are saying, and what he is saying is that they are proposing to instead of having next Thursday the vice presidential debate in St. Louis, to make that the presidential debate and then to delay the VP debate to another time. That is what they are proposing, they understand very well that both the Obama campaign and the debate commission have no intention of delaying Friday's debate, but both he and a senior advisor that if there is no bailout deal by Friday, McCain has no plan to go to debate.

Oh good lord...anyone else getting that Titanic-in-front-of-an-iceberg feeling? I guess those Navy planes aren't the only things that John McCain will be known for crashing. His campaign, in the ongoing comedy of errors swirling his sudden and reckless choice to "suspend" his campaign, accidentally released his talking points to the media. The headline: Do not reach out to the media on this. Whoops!

Funnily enough, McCain felt no compunction about debating back in 2000, while his good friend and senior economic advisor Phil Gramm negotiated the deregulation that got us in this situation in the first place.

Why don't we just postpone THE WHOLE FRIGGIN' ELECTION!

Ooops, wait, forget I said that...

So CNN is the only one that ran with this statement- and the evening news did not, and Jeff Greenfield on CBS News gave a really interesting analysis of the whole situtation today...worth seeing ( I will try to find- it should be up on the CBS site soon). NO other evening news ran this Postponement idea...none....McCain can not walk and chew gum..and after watching Couric interview Palin- no she is not ready for the debate..at all....

LibertyLover's picture

Sure. Let's just cancel the next 41 days. And Obama can win by default.

Who says McCain can't do two things at once? He's doubling up for the rusty Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. Palin is still the Scarecrow.

Mark my words:
Soon, the 'se5rious' people will be saying that we need to 'liquidate' Social Security to "free up" all that potential investment capital...

There is a National Enquirer article about an alleged affair Sarah Palin had with her husband's business partner, dated Sept. 24 and originated earlier around the 5th. WHY IS THIS NEWS TO ME???? Where have I been? This should be major news and should be all over the TV. Why isn't it?

txlvn's picture

The basis is to delay Palin having to answer questions in front of the public, not that hogwash line about the bail out. Well it is a BAIL OUT!! palin's bail out....!!!!!

She's not ready for prime time and she NEVER will be.

She's just a pretty poseur.

This whole Palin move is backfiring on McCain in spades.

Obviously Sarah Palin is no Eliza Doolittle!!!

At least Eliza was a quick study for God's sake.

I want to see the press go after Palin BIG TIME. The sooner we end this political charade the better.

If you believe polls, the latest CNN website poll has 80% of respondents saying they think McCain's maneuvers today are based totally on politics and not concern over the economy. Maybe some of the idiots are beginning to see the light.

Hell gas alone might cost $100.00 for a fillup next time and I only have a four banger now.... And that Micky D number one meal might run $50.00 by this time next week. I don't think I can take any chances now or do much more than stuff my mattresses with money on hand. At the very least I should 'invest' in a wheel barrel... Oops! Colorado McCain camp sends internal e-mail to reporters

The regional spokesman for John McCain in Colorado accidentally sent the campaign’s internal talking points on the candidate’s plans to suspend his campaign to its entire Colorado media list, instead of a list of key volunteers, Wednesday afternoon, PolitickerCO’s Jeremy Pelzer reports.

The memo, titled “TALKING POINTS: SUSPENDING THE CAMPAIGN,” includes a list of points the campaign wants emphasized, and includes this warning from Kise: “Please do not proactively reach out to the media on this.”

McCain’s plans to stop campaigning — and a proposal to cancel Friday’s debate with Obama — had already been widely reported Wednesday afternoon.

That fat, phony pig, Lou Dobbs(Mr. Independent) called Grandpa ducking out of the debate "leadership". I hate that fraud Dobbs. Nothing about that jerk is "independent". Another lying stack of shit, O'Reilly claims to be an "independent" too.

Dobbs is a dickhead. I used to respect him some. Pretty recently. But when he is supporting McCain over Obama that's the final straw. What a complete moron. Especially for a person who is supposed to have an economic background. To still support McCain is bordering on... I don't know. I'm sick of the media. It would be nice if CNN did a better job.

Fatboy Dobbs bought a box of "Obama pancakes" recently.

I had a feeling all along the point was to cancel the VP debate. They don't want this girl opening her mouth. I heard the Katie Couric interview didn't go too well..

i saw the katie couric interview -- no, it did not go well. couric looked really annoyed at having to participate in this mock interview and palin told couric she'd have to get back to her when asked to name a specific accomplishment of mccain's in his 26 years representing.

Just saw that clip on YouTube. Totally embarrassing.

McCain has not been in the senate since April. He did not vote for the GI Bill, and a host of other legislation. And now he thinks, while his numbers in the polls are sinking that he can save the day in congress. That old fart has lost his mind. And Palin probably needs some good baby making time and a debate would interfere with her concentration or fertility.

Lindsey Graham wants to negotiate? The same f*%ker that said that Obama isn't a good man, that he isn't a patriot, that he can't be trusted to be president?

Tell that closeted gay poser to go pound sand. Its "Go Time" MF'er! Put up or shut up.

Snowball's picture

McCain is afraid to debate the economy, plain and simple. That's what this is all about. He knows his lassiez faire fundamentalism, support of deregulation and privatization of Social Security are now indefensible positions. This effort to "postpone" the debates are nothing but a cynical ploy and if he fails to show up for the debate, Obama needs to call him out on it.

If McCain refuses to participate in the debate, Obama should make a statement something like this:

My thanks to all who have worked so hard to make this debate possible so that the American people have a chance to participate democratically in the momentous and critical decisions that are being made in their name, with their tax dollars, that have important implications that will effect their lives and pocketbooks in both the short and long term.

I am saddened that my opponent has declined to participate and debate these critical issues of our times. Then again, I am not surprised. The dire economic circumstances we are facing as a country today are the direct result of the very economic policies John McCain, President Bush and the Republican party have implemented. The collapse of our economic system stems from the very deregulation and hands off approach John McCain advocates.

etc...

I'm no speech writer, but if McCain ditches out of the debate, Obama should be relentless and use that opportunity to inform the public about how we got into this mess and why the free market fundamentalism of the Republican party is responsible.

OK, let's review the day:

-McCain campaign manager is outed as having received cash from Freddie Mac as recently as August
-McCain tries to screw Obama by making a rash decision to suspend his campaign
-McCain bluff gets called
-Palin "affair" is broken by National Enquirer (remember John Edwards -- they're good at this)
-McCain basically says he's refusing to debate
-Palin crashes and burns in Couric interview
-McCain campaign accidentally sends its talking points to the media
-McCain campaign announces they want to postpone the VP debate

Can ANY OF YOU think of a WORSE day for a presidential candidate (other than RFK, of course)?

Left&Left's picture

Can anyone even imagine the explosion on the right wing if Obama had ducked out over this bullshit excuse? The double standards and contradictions in this campaign should be a racial/political science study for centuries.

Oh Billy's picture

They're realizing they made a huge mistake picking Palin. They thought Hillary voters and soccer moms would just shut up and pull the lever. Didn't happen. Now she has to speak to more than a camera and they're freaking out.

Sarah Palin vs Joe Biden....who ya got?

kerplunk's picture

Breaking: John McCain is now proposing that the Presidential Election be postponed. His campaign is working with the Obama Campaign on working out the details.

Stargazer's picture

I think that Bush is going to come on tonight and try to scare the crap out of everyone about how they will lose their houses and paychecks and pensions. He will say this is the most dire situation for Americans, then McCain will say see I am putting country first and I was right not to debate. What a bunch of BS.

My My How Clear Things Become With Time

I could kick myself. I did not see this delay thing was about Sarah Palin. This delay will really hurt the McCain campaign even more then it would hurt if McCain were delaying his own debate.

Palin has been avoiding the press everywhere she goes. The world knows this lady is not ready and to put her before the American people as is would be making political suicide. McCain had do to this. Palin would of made an ass out herself, McCain, and the Republican Party. Hell, with the right Democratic spin, she could still make that ass making prediction.

So, what is next? They, Bush and McSame, will try and delay the ultimate ass whipping: The general election. I hope not; the American people would explode with outrage.

From post:

"His campaign, in the ongoing comedy of errors swirling his sudden and reckless choice to “suspend” his campaign, accidentally released his talking points to the media. The headline: Do not reach out to the media on this. Whoops!"

That was no accident - the statements sounded simply like the McCain camp's description of the way things went down. The news broadcast I heard in the car on the way home from work contained several of the McCain talking points practically verbatim and gave the distinct impression that McCain had taken the lead on this. Only at the very end did they report that "Obama" claimed that he, not McCain, initiated the overtures. Fair and balanced.

RobertD's picture

First, the local news where I am just covered the campaign suspension story, and it was very balanced. They started with McCain's announcement, but they were very even-handed in explaining Obama's position on not canceling the debate. The affiliate (NBC) said that if the debate goes ahead, they will carry it Friday no matter who shows up.

Second, no mention of Palin at all.

Third, yes, McCain's eye looks *horrible.* I've noticed that when he blinks, one eye does, and one eye doesn't often times. Anyone here an oncology nurse or know anything about cancer recurrence? (I'm not rumor-mongering, I'm just curious to know if his melanoma could recur and metastacize to his eye. Would it manifest in that way?)

kerplunk's picture

McCain is looking awful today. His left eye is droopy. Did he have a slight stroke? Perhaps a series of Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA)?

McCain is reminding me of Strom Thurmond in his last days. They slapped some colorful makeup on his face, brushed his hair with shoe polish, hooked a string to his jaw from the back of his head, propped him up in his Senate chair, and wah lah, we had a Marionette Show.

Paging Sarah.

Sarah Palin: The interesting thing in the last couple of days that I have seen is that Americans are waiting to see what John McCain will do on this proposal. They’re not waiting to see what Barack Obama is going to do. Is he going to do this and see what way the political wind’s blowing. They’re waiting to see if John McCain will be able to see these amendments implemented in Paulson’s proposal.

WOW

does McLame actually think he can keep his VP pick from talking before november?
it will be difficult for any comedy writer to spoof the MCain campaign, you cant possibly make this shit up. Could he act any more out of control than he has in the past 8 days? and who are the 40%+ that polls say would vote for him anymore? someone wake me when this silly dream is over. i have had acid trips that made more less bizzar than this.

there will be no fewer layoffs or foreclosures, but the infusion of cash to the offenders will help them ride out the coming storm. by simply announcing the bailout on monday, the dollar dropped like a stone. all congress will do is help them ride out the storm and destroy the domestic budget.

Cap Jones's picture

McCain wants to postpone the presidential debate Friday, and wants to debate INSTEAD of Palin Biden debate.

Want to bet that Palin will never reschedule that one?

McCain's camp has pulled this stunt out of their collective asses in order to accomplish 3 vital things.

1. Take the shameful Republican economic melt-down off the front page, or at least make it share attention.

2. McCain may be able to falsely claim he brokered a deal on the bailout plan, and take the blame off his guilty head.

3. Palin isn't going to be ready to debate Biden in time- lets be frank- never will be if she lives to be 100. Postpone and have phony "crisis" call her ass back to Alaska until November.

I think I nailed it.

willie's picture

Oh damn, what if this is a ploy and bush co. will soon announce that they will be posponing the election until this crisis is over? now sit there and say with total conviction "no they would never try that". not easy to do is it?

liberAL's picture

I said this was going to happen. WTF does McCain think he is doing? Palin is as ready now as she will be 2 years from now. Let the American voters see what a vacant suit she really is.

kerplunk's picture

Earlier one of the McCain Surrogates on MSNBC immediately stated that the Obama Campaign has no idea how to respond to McCain's request to delay the Presidential Debate this Friday. He said it like it was a big coup. What an idiot.
