Mike's Blog Roundup
Rawrahs: Here in Opposite World...
Illiterate Electorate: Palin is the Anti-Putin! Or maybe, she's a fellow traveller...
But why do we keep talking about Palin when, darnit, Joe Biden is so hawt. (and I mean that in the "intelligence is an aphrodisac" way, sorry Sarah).
Jesus General: Who do you trust? Also, beware of this suspicious email making the rounds. (h/t Driftglass)

MSNBC is saying McCain will attend the debate tonight.
The debate is on tonight. Unfortunately, Obama will be his usual gracious self and not question McCain's little "suspension" stunt.
Still, I hope Obama buries Gramps.
Some tasty shoe leather...
peaceful easy feeling @ 3:
So?
All Obama has to do tonight is be himself
We already know how the reviews will read.
Obama was just too damned smart and America isn't looking for intelligence in this time of financial chaos. McCain on the other had gave short stupid answers which are the kind most Americans can understand and want to hear while the country is engaged in two wars and financial chaos.
McCain's exceptional, albeit questionable, history as a war hero and his incredible ability not to have a clue about economics literally won every aspect of the debate for him.
pissed off patricia @ 1:
How much did he pay for his ticket?
pissed off patricia @ 1:
Will he be "wired"?
Ron @ 4:
Exactly. The point is, Hoover offered no solutions, and the Depression dragged on for YEARS. Only FDR offered solutions, which included the WPA and CCC, which enabled unemployed men to send money back to their families and improve the infrastructure of this country. My late grandmother had no goodwill at all for Hoover but loved FDR. As for the television-radio gaffe, well, OK, but it's a little mistake. At least Biden has something concrete to say. When you look at what Palin has to say on paper, it makes absolutely no sense. I wonder if she even has an idea about what happened under Herbert Hoover. It took her six years to get a college degree!
pissed off patricia @ 5:
Spot on, P.O.P. you nailed it.
For some reason I think the same people that will fall for that email will also fall for McSame/Falin. I don't know why I think that, I just do :-).
In other news my friends it was reported today that John McCain sent his first email ever the other day. Unfortunately it is also being reported that there was a security breech and his campaign's bank account #'s were leaked, so he had to call a "suspension" of the campaign to save a few bucks.
Just read Krauthammer's column on why we must support the bailout. Now I'm sure it's a bad thing as Chucky has never been right.
McBush/Qualin '08!
i hope that the debate is so heated that they actually spar!
can you imagine mccain attempting to punch obama with his zombie arms while obama ducks and weaves and rants about how he's cassius clay (because

Last night on the MSM News they were talking to ordinary people in Montana, (red state America). There was a man, a rancher, who said he was troubled by the fear tactics being laid forth by Bush, McCain and Palin. He said "FDR said "there is nothing to fear but fear itself" and that is what these people are counting on, our fear."

With his tail tucked between his legs he comes back to face the American people who want answers. I wouldn't miss this for the world. Get the popcorn and sodas ready boys and girls.
McSame's opening statement:
"My friends, I learned about crisis when I was a POW. That's why I am the one best suited to deal with the financial crisis my party has gotten America into"
Moderator: "Senator McCain, can you give us specifics"
McSame: "............um......er......I was a POW!"
CMINCA @ 12:
I saw that too. The guy was pretty damned wise.
In case anyone missed Bush's blink-of-an-eye press conference this morning, here's the transcript.
THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. My administration continues to work with the Congress on a rescue plan. And we need a rescue plan. This is -- it's hard work. Our proposal is a big proposal. And the reason it's big and substantial is because we got a big problem.
We also need to move quickly. Now, anytime you have a plan this big, that is moving this quickly, that requires legislative approval, it creates challenges. Members want to be heard. They want to be able to express their opinions, and they should be allowed to express their opinions.
There are disagreements over aspects of the rescue plan, but there is no disagreement that something substantial must be done. The legislative process is sometimes not very pretty, but we are going to get a package passed. We will rise to the occasion. Republicans and Democrats will come together and pass a substantial rescue plan.
Thank you very much.
i hope that the debate is so heated that they actually spar!
I think it would be quite easy for Obama to bore in on McCain to such a point that Gramps would lose his cool and explode or lash out. I would love to see that. Unfortunately, Obama won't do that. He'll take the "High Road". Republicans are more adept at sensing when the animal is wounded and going in for the kill.
pissed off patricia @ 5:
I kid you not, in a poll on who handled the financial crisis better, some people where actually saying they wanted more emotion out of Obama. Calm, clear in message, soothing the panic, solutions-oriented those were not leadership skills in a time of crisis. Drama-queen, end of the world, sky is falling rhetoric is?
McCain, the drama queen of our era. Will he show? Will he not show? Did he fix the financial crisis before departing DC? Please! Enough!

Re: Ron @ 4
So go buy yourself a sense of humor. ;)
Anais @ 8:
I know this is unpopular, but there is also the notion that the Great Depression was not caused by the stock market crash alone, but by the credit crunch that followed due to Hoover's refusal to put any money into the system. That is the premise that Bernake is working on. I'm sure not all economists follow this line of thinking. I doubt that they do.
McCain is coming into this debate with egg on his face. The bailout/rescue plan is not complete and he said he would not show up until it was. He got caught in his own trap.
wheeee @ 11:
You would think it was an honest to God boxing match, the way CNN is advertising it. I'm so sick of infotainment. I want unbiased news reporting, not sensationalism.
CMINCA @ 24:
But can't that liquidity be injected in small amounts at precise locations (i.e. local and regional banks)? Why on earth would we just hand a blank check to Paulson to bail out the investment bankers???
pissed off patricia @ 25:
And he will let his mouth dig his own grave.
Re: pissed off patricia @ 15
Both wise and balanced, definitely a guy who knows better than to obsess over "politics." Like me, voting for Obama/Biden without feeling the need to harbor personal animosity against their opponents. :)
Orangutan. @ 22:
This preacher sounds more substantial than Sarah, even if that substance is crazy juice.
Get real people, we have a mess here and history has shown once a party inherits this problem people expected action. America tends to forget about the past and look at whom in charge. Remember president does not make law and how long will it take to recover with this mess. People out here our losing jobs, homes and their lifestyle, they expected the next president to make a lot of hard decision something he has no power in doing. Yes he can talk a lot, but has no real authority to do much. It going to take time to solve our economy problems and the party in office will be blame for mess. Look at history and the great depression republican were in charge and inherit that mess they lost power and it took them 30 year to recover it. Do research their really no simple quick fix in solving this problem. It will take time and we are a very inpatient country and we want action fast. It won’t happen that fast.
So if you were a Republican then let Obama win. If you were a democrat I wouldn't be excited in winning either. Obama and McCain love to be call president, but in reality they will both be run by the old man that been in office for years Congress. If they try not to work with them then they will be a long and forgotten president Remember voting for one polictal party over the other isn’t the answer there either. No parties vote on party line so doesn’t be fool in all this talk you hearing them give about change. Obama and McCain have really no power to creating change. Changes have to be created by us first. We don’t have so wrap up in their election on how people talk and look ect. They are both good use Car sales men. The one with the biggest talk usually is the wrong guy. Something this country has done for year.
So if you a Democrat and win this election, good luck you asking for many long year of recovering from this mess and losing power in future from it. Why do you think the republican nominated McCain because he not one of true republican never has been. They just want to get rid of him. If you a republican you cause it and getting off the hook. I see no change here but a bunch a people who have no ideal the system work.
pissed off patricia @ 25:
There's still 9 hours left.
The crazy conspiracy parts of me says this is all a set up so that McCain can surprisingly announce, at the debate, that "my friends, we have a resuce plan (thanks to me, of course)." Even with their differences, Republicans seems to be able to come together for the greater good/greed of the party. I wouldn't be surprised if they've already agreed on a plan and are waiting for tonight to announce it.
Tucker Bounds just lied on Fox. He said McCain suspended all his ads yesterday.
No he did not! I fu*king saw them.
Re: CMINCA @ 24
Widespread panic is what made the Great Depression so great.
While there is disagreement on how to implement the rescue plan, there is consensus something is needed to avert widespread panic.
theWalrus @ 32:
Reid and Dodd sure didn't sound like they had a deal or even close to a deal this morning. Now maybe McCain called the repubs and told them to agree with the dems and get this done. Who the hell knows. Sad when you can't even trust a guy running for president, isn't it?
JJ @ 31:
Not sure what your point is? Clinton inherited a mess from Daddy Bush and turned it around. The fact is, Republicans just do not know how to run an economy and even though Baby Bush has gotten us into a bigger mess I believe the Dems will be able to effectively turn it around. They are much smarter.
My hubby and I voted for Obama/Biden yesterday. Afterwards I put my head down and thought of all the lives cut short by slavery, torture, lynching, bombing, assassination and I thanked each and every one of them for their sacrifices that have led us to this time.
wow. CNL finally linked illiterateelectorate... i can die happy now. Thanks for the love CNL!!!

I hate to break it to you, but he isn't the only one preaching the "gospel of prosperity". They all do it.
From Chris Hedges' book, American Facists: "In the megachurches, there are worshippers and preachers who focus exclusively on the gospel of prosperity--centered on the belief that God wants Christians to be rich and successful.
As Dominionists, how can you have dominion over God's kingdom without being rich and politically powerful.
puddy @ 38:
And you can die proud as well, puddy. But tell me something, what's all this I keep hearing about "hairspace"?

Boy, even die hard Conservatives like Kathleen Parker are now saying dump Palin after the interviews she did:
"As we've seen and heard more from John McCain's running mate, it is increasingly clear that Palin is a problem. Quick study or not, she doesn't know enough about economics and foreign policy to make Americans comfortable with a President Palin should conditions warrant her promotion."
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/26/kathleen-parker-after-int_n_129...
So if you a Democrat and win this election, good luck you asking for many long year of recovering from this mess and losing power in future from it. you don't understand. mccain/palin aren't a good option. regardless of the challenges. the republicans have deregulated the financial system,we have two wars now maybe more, nation building, tax breaks for the wealthy, secrecy,torture......this presidency has been a disaster.
now you listen to palin take relatively simple questions
are the response(s) are nonsensical.
Uppity Blue Lensman @ 27:
There is much about the financial markets that is not being fully disclosed. I don't think people realize how severe the Lehman Brothers collapse was. There are money market funds, those safe "almost a savings account" type vehicles that most seniors have their money in that are completely frozen. The Reserve Accounts were tied up in Lehman and those funds have completely collapsed and they cannot handle the redemption requests from 12 days ago. That means the monies are frozen and may or may not be able to be redeemed them at some future date. As it stands, they will not be redeemed at 100% of their value. This constitutes billions of dollars alone. The FDIC is also in trouble as more and more banks are failing and the FDIC has to cover those deposits. This is a very serious issue that will affect most Americans. I think the President and Congress know they need to remedy this before the 3rd quarter 401k statements come out and people really start panicking. It is very, very bad.

Has any investigative journalist or otherwise figured out who gave Jeff Gannon a press pass and what was he doing in the White House. Do we have gay prostitutes in the White House??
Has anyone pursued the Anthrax story and come up with any answers?? Or do we care when death threats are given to our democratic leaders before Constitution changing legislation is passed?
Wake up. Don't be afraid to be called "conspiracy theorist" if your goal is simply to go after the truth.
Geez.
theWalrus @ 36:
Clinton benefitted greatly from the dot com bubble and without it, he would certainly have had a difficult time turning the economy around. Perhaps, green energy will do the same for Obama. We'll just have to see.
Re: CMINCA @ 40
Only some of the megachurches are pushing the "health and wealth" gospel. Joel Osteen, bad. Bill Hybels, good. Greg Dickow, bad. Rick Warren, good. Perhaps it's time to branch out beyond Harper's and Mother Jones.
CMINCA @ 40:
There are just a handful of books I would recommend that show the underbelly of the religious fanatics we may be forced to fight another Civil War with. Chris Hedges book, imho, tops the list.
Re: The Fundamentally Strong Rusty Shackleford @ 45
Grow up.
Will the debate be on another channel than CNN? I cut cable way back to keep the intertubes, so I don't have CNN anymore. I'm hoping its on C-SPAN at least
peaceful easy feeling @ 50:
You should still be concerned, one of their own may be a heartbeat away from the presidency. This scares me to death.
it seems to be house republicans slowing this 'bailout'
proposal. this is a BUSH proposal. seems that mccain is
boxed in alittle. they are really concerned about
getting this done by asian market opening sunday evening. it's interesting how this came upon the last
couple weeks.
i don't pretent to understand this financial crisis but i still believe the ruling in 2004 that allowed the big 5
financial institutions wanted the ability to increase their
leverage margins/ratios. the SEC allowed this.
I should think this debate will be on the major channels like cbs abc etc.
Liberal AND Proud @ 6:

Go to politico and see some pathetic rightwingers consider this a win for McCain and his move was a sign of leadership. It's funny as hell, yet embarrassing to see the desperation. They're the same posters who say Palin speaks like a "real person" and not some blithering, bumbling idjit.
CMINCA @ 60:
Very cool! Thank you!
Re: CMINCA @ 54
Concern over the "health and wealth" preachers corrupting the true Gospel is a given. Further to that, the lack of discernment within the general populace is also of concern, for example the tendency to lump together all "evangelicals" or all "megachurches."

Isn't the debate on past the elder Senator's bed time? Sorry. Its past mine for sure but I'm thinking about taking a nap just so I can wake up and hear Senator OBAMA CLEAN MCCAIN'S CLOCK! How can McCain not be prepared? He suspended his campaign and the Letterman interview; doncha' think he's rested up for this?

Yes, a dangerous blend, which can apply to both preachers and politicians.
peaceful easy feeling @ 64:
I will have less concern and perhaps more "discernment" when the other evangelicals and megachurches start calling the "health and wealth" preaching bogus and un-Christian. Until then, I have no problem lumping them all together.

NOBODY can fix it.
Obama, if installed, will be merely a sacrificial offering to 'prove' that the libruls/minorities are useless.
The conditions will not change, preparing the way for a Hillary/Jeb 'contest' in 12.
If McC(umst)ain is installed, the depredations on the country will continue unabated.
Nothing is gonna change.
It's too fucked up...
peaceful easy feeling @ 52:
"Grow up"? Strong words from the dude who was gloating like Hannity over Biden's alleged misspeaking.
But since it offends you so, I promise you I won't compliment you again
dennissweet pea.peaceful easy feeling @ 64:
True. In the quote I mentioned it goes on to exclude "a small cluster" of evangelicals, such as Jim Wallis, Ron Sider, and Luis Palau. My concern is people who are followers, who depend on others to think for them and tell them what to think. My concern is not with the minority of Christians who are walking the walk. I would exclude every "mega-church" from this, by virtue of being a "mega-church".

Like these folks. People with an almost comical ignorance of the rationale behind the no-politicking rule that applies to tax-exempt organizations.
Think they're going to be endorsing Obama?
Jo @ 79:
I'm actually half serious. We'll have to cut spending in order to fund this bail-out, so why not start at one of the biggest sources of government waste.
The Fundamentally Strong Rusty Shackleford @ 83:
They've already said they are going to point out Satan's plan in Obama's message for hope. I hope the IRS crucifies them. No pun intended.
These faith-based initiatives are not supposed to be used for prosletyzing either, but these damn evangelicals cannot keep their born-again opinions to themselves.
CMINCA @ 85:
The rank-and-file at the IRS have traditionally been people who take their job very seriously (which is why so many dislike them). For the most part they have been well-insulated from partisanship too. So they might very well rip these phony Christians a new one.
EXCUSE ME,BUT isn't this treasonous extortion by the Paulson and Bernake Bunch a form of psychological toture of U.S. citizens!! Wall Street waterboarding!
