Calloway has always been known for his over-the-top, energetic stage presence that captivated audiences throughout his career. However, this combination of enthusiasm and skill came through lots of practice. Having gotten his start in famous jazz clubs like Dreamland Ballroom and The Cotton Club, Calloway was able to develop his skill as a conductor, musician, and dancer in a way that made him unique amongst his contemporaries, who would typically have a lower profile within their ensembles. Because of this, Calloway became a source of inspiration for artists like James Brown, Michael Jackson, and other musicians who emphasized their roles as performers.
