Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told the hosts of Fox & Friends on Wednesday that emotion President Barack Obama showed during a press conference about gun deaths was "sincere."

On Tuesday, the president had cried while talking about children who died in places like Newtown, Connecticut and Chicago due to gun violence. But hosts at Fox News immediately doubted Obama's emotion.

"I would check that podium for like a raw onion," host Andrea Tantaros quipped following the press conference.

Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy asked Trump for his reaction on Wednesday.

"I actually think he was sincere," the candidate replied. "I'll probably go down about five points in the polls for saying that, but I think he was sincere."

"It's a thing that he feels -- I think he's incorrect about it, you know, taking chunks and chunks out of the Second Amendment -- but, you know, I think he probably means well."

Trump argued that the president should focus on improving mental health care instead of taking executive action to expand background checks on firearm purchases. In fact, Obama's executive action calls for spending $500 million expanding mental health care access and including mental health information in background checks.

According to the billionaire, the ISIS-inspired attacks in Paris and San Bernardino could have been stopped "if some of the people in those rooms had guns."

"There would have been some people obviously pretty badly hurt, but you wouldn't have had the problem the way we had the problem," Trump opined. "We cannot tamper with the Second Amendment."
