Rand Paul Says 'Nobody's Got A Damn Car In Afghanistan'

Rand Paul doesn't really have much to say about policy these days, so he's just putting some words together and seeing what happens.

Yesterday, Rand Paul appeared on “The Simon Conway Show” to rail against left-wing environmentalism that he says “has infected the Pentagon” and driven up military expenditures.

One result of this “green craziness,” he said, was the construction of a natural gas fueling station in Afghanistan, even though, according to the Kentucky senator, “nobody’s got a damn car in Afghanistan.”

Actually, Rand, you're wrong. Lots of people have cars in Afghanistan and have for quite some time. According to the Washington Post, the Toyota Corolla is the car of choice for the Afghan people.

Also, guess what, Rand? Afghanistan actually had quite a robust education system, and was on their way to more progressive reforms in the country before the Soviet Union invaded them. And what did we do after they left? Left a huge leadership vacuum there, dropped the ball on economic development efforts in partnership with them, and then invaded their damn country.

Now they don't just have cars. They have tanks, and Stingers, and all kinds of expensive machinery. So criticize the ridiculous military spending, but at least aim it at the right target, Rand.

Afghans drive cars that take regular gasoline. I'm pretty sure those tanks and armored vehicles take premium.
