He's the son of rhythm & blues pioneer. BB King once declared him his favorite guitarist. He played on albums by Frank Zappa, Louis Jordan, Etta James and many more.

He pissed off his record label, Epic, because it took three years to finish his 3rd album, Inspiration Information, because he had a reputation for "taking his time." He played almost all the instruments on that record (save for some horns and strings.) When the much anticipated record was released in 1974, it didn't reach chart expectations which pissed off Epic Records even more. Now it, along with his other albums, are considered definitive sounds of West Coast Psychedelic Soul.
