Given the usual tropes of the American western -- black hats, white hats, wide-open spaces -- it seems like a strange place to mount a noirish Gothic melodrama, full of shadows and doom. But director Anthony Mann finds a way to make it work. Starring the amazing Barbara Stanwyck and Walter Huston in his last film performance.
