That was really nice. I am already sick of the high expectations crud.
We should have high expectations of ourselves. We did this, Obama couldn't have done it without US. He knows this and is thankful and knows that we have to support him for the hard work to be done.
My expectations for President-elect Obama (man, I never get tired of saying that) are that he will lead the nation and boost the spirit of cooperation as much as he can. My expectations for the rest of us is that we will do what we can to make our country a better place. As long as I do my part, I am not worried about who else is helping out. I'm only concerned with the ones that are hurting.
Vigilance. We will need to put the marginal Right back where they belong. (Limbaugh and cronies) At the margins.
Beckyboo you spelled it out perfectly.
My president has my unconditional support. He faces tremendous challenges, perhaps historically the biggest challenges any new president has ever faced.
Great video!
Here's to changing times. We've been waiting for this a LONG time.

Thank you for that Ali.
I had just gotten done responding to someone below about the baby boomers, and this really crystallized what I was saying to them. Like mind on the same wavelength?
Thanks again. It made me cry a little.

Can Bush pardon himself?
Yes, he can. And he can blanket pardon everyone in his criminal cabal.
Bush will only be brought to justice by the ICC, which he pulled out of immediately upon entering office. Even if Obama rejoins the ICC, I don't know if it would be retroactive, or if Obama would even do it because it would put our military at risk of also being tried.
It's a bad situation no matter what...just as was and is everything that Bush taints with his presence.
The other day I heard John Dean on Thomm Hartmann's program say that if Bush was involved in the crime a pardon for any of those participating would be void. I'm not 100% sure of this.
Part of the reason that Ford was chosen by Nixon was because he was fairly certain that if he were put on trial for criminal charges, Ford would pardon him.
It would seem counter to the Constitution for a criminal President to be able to pardon himself. Not that Bush has ever paid any attention to the Constitution before now. I do have faith that the President-elect knows a thing or two about it, and is aware of any loopholes.
For the first time, we have elected a teacher as President. And this is an important distinction: he taught Constitutional law! So yes, I believe he "knows a thing or two about it."
A little history here. Nixon didn't choose Ford, he was an automatic because he was speaker of the house.
listen to John Dean long before anything I said. If that's what he said, I would go with that. Just because I read it doesn't make it true. I like Dean and I trust what he says.
"Impeach Bush Before He Pardons Himself
According to Seymour Hersh there is a conga line of insiders waiting until January 20th to spill the beans on the gross criminality of the Bush/Cheney administration. Waiting . . . because if they did it now the two of them would be tarred and feathered on the way out the door.
But we the people do not have to wait. We can and must demand the immediate impeachment of both Bush and Cheney for what is already known. At the very least the defiance of congressional subpoenas at the behest of the White House is an open and shut case for accountability now.
Impeach Now Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/impeach_now.php
Because as his final constitutional insult, his final spit in the face to the American people and all rule of law, it is transparently obvious that Bush is planning the most wholesale and wrongful pardon of the worst political criminals in American history, his whole criminal gang, INCLUDING himself.
And don't think that is not their precise plan. Please, what power has Bush NOT abused? What heinous, self-serving, shameless and dishonest act has he ever shied away from, when he was torturing and eavesdropping and lying us into wars of corporate aggression. Does anyone doubt that is what he is planning on doing?
And when you submit this action page, you will have one last chance to get one of the "Impeach Both!!!" caps, which after January 20th will no longer be available from us for love or for money.
Impeach Now Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/impeach_now.php
Will Congress now act? That is not the yardstick of the worth of our activism. We speak out because we must speak out, whether we are heeded or not. Let history record that we spoke out until the last minute to the eternal shame of those who did not. Because when enough of us speak out at once, the worst thing that can possibly happen is that we are building the progressive base for the REAL change of the future.
So Bush most certainly is planning on pardoning himself. And all the right wing lock down ideologues in the corporate controlled media will call it "healing". Let's all make nice with war criminals? Shall we all make nice with the gang rape of our economy, our environment and our Constitution? We think not.
And one more thing. You know that come January 20th the right wing will start calling for the impeachment of our new president, over a endless litany of the most ridiculous of trivial trifles. In fact it has already started even though he has not even taken office. If they are so hot on impeaching someone, let them speak out now, when it truly is called for, or shut the hell up in 73 days.
Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible."

when obama first became a senator
interesting his seeming germ phobia (and no, i dont think its racial, i wash my hands after shaking others...i just dont do it in front of them)
A lot of work to do ahead, but at least there's hope for something better. I just hope the Secret Service does its job and doesn't have right wing spies.
They do have right wing spies...but the also seem to be doing their job so far.
The Secret Service is not supposed to be political in any way. They are a professional protection force, and as such, are supposed to only be devoted to protecting their charges.
Let's hope that the men protecting President-elect Obama are more devoted to their job and their service to their country than they are to any political ideology.
Here's hoping that the extremist's need for chaos in order to thrive is kept in check.
as if it rubs off.
Was great! So glad I traveled from IN to there!
A lifetime of memories. Great crowd! Great Message.
I just opened my mail and got a notice from Chase that the interest rate on my credit card will be Prime + "up to" 26.99% with a max of 29.99%
"Up To"??? WTF? With a credit rating of over 800? WTF^3!?!?!?!??
While I can afford to not use my credit cards, many families are in deep doo-doo. It seems that the banks just want to kill the economy now.
Merchants may as well give up all hope of selling anything.
that I got over my credit habit long ago. I keep one credit card with a relatively small limit (and I try to always pay it off).
Nothing like almost 30% interest with 17 day 'month' cycles.
I wonder how many people ever read what those rates are...or notice that they go up.
For those of us who kicked the habit and pay off the balance each month, no worries.
If you carry a balance or are using credit cards to keep your family afloat while you're unemployed, you're TOTALLY screwed.
Whatever happened to Usery laws? Hello Congress! Let's have some Article 1 action here!
I don't know about the 800 score. According to the right wing we're just a bunch of slackers about paying bills, lie to get credit and don't pay taxes.
Snark!
It's called loan sharking, and thanks to Tom "the scumbag" Delay and his criminal republican cronies in the banking industry who WROTE this legislation, American's are being wiped out.
Nearly everyone we know (including ourselves) has perfect credit, high credit ratings, and yet we are being charged 26-30% on our credit cards now.
When we call to ask why the rates are skyrocketing their answer is always the same: "because we can!" No shit, I can't tell you how many people have told us that. They are nothing but theives.
And now these same bastards are stuffing 750,000,000,000 worth of our money into their banks so they can sit on it until they can find a way to get their golden parachuttes, thanks to the Bush family crime syndicate.
Their greed and criminality is beyond the pale!
I'm a Baby Boomer, vintage 1955, smack dab in the middle of the generation. Barack Obama comes near the end of the Baby Boomer generation, but he's still a Baby Boomer. Out generation has yet to live up to its potential, and I think that maybe, just maybe, Obama might represent the best of our generation, and all its promise.
So beyond the relief I felt on Election Night when they called the election for Barack, the tears that streamed down my face were for the promise of a generation. I've got to hope that this man can do great things for our nation and our world. He's the best hope I see for our generation.
that most of us born in the sixties don't consider ourselves baby boomers.
My mother was born in 1943 and is considered a boomer, and so am I, being born in 1964.
I think that the Boomer Generation thing has always been false. There are those that were born and remember before Kennedy and upheaval, and those that don't have any vivid memories before civil rights.
My mother was an adult in the sixties and was a part of the "movements" that were afoot back then. I have reaped the benefits of some, and seen the excesses of others, and have been made to feel like my generation was not quite up to snuff by media and people of my mother's "Generation." We were not "really" boomers, and we were not yet GenX.
We have been watchers. Now is our chance to be doers, and we may have had the best seats in the house for our schooling. We have seen what is right and what was wrong. We have walked the line between loving what our parents did, and seeing them throw away the promise of their generation.
I submit that those born late in the boom, and you are among us, may be an entirely different generation, that no one has paid attention to. We are the silent doers, the natural diplomats who were schooled by parents and older siblings committed to causes that they some couldn't completely reconcile as they aged.
They went into a political world with the passion of youth, and many of them never aged beyond it, and many more became cynical and decided for the opposite extreme.
We are the second generation. We have the ability to see their mistakes and their successes, and to run with it. Much like new immigrants, we are their children. We have learned the language, and we have been shown the ropes. This is a new country, but it is OUR country, and we can maneuver in it with a little more ease than the generation that laid the groundwork for our successes.
I see this in President-elect Obama. He has the ability to navigate the waters of change, and bring people who are floundering aboard. He is a diplomat and believer in the future, who is not tied to the past by old ideologies.
I have long believed that we should call ourselves the "Civil Rights Children" because we saw the dawn of real civil rights for blacks, women and gays, and we assimilated without the need to hold on to the memories of how it was before. We don't have those memories, or they are were not made vivid for us by adult realization.
You filled in all the details regarding the latter part of the boomer generation, and I think "Civil Rights Children" is a very apt label!! Cheers darlin'. Here's to the hope of generations!!
and here's to HOPE.
thank you! i was born in 1964 too. i always felt like i "fell between the cracks". however, i am in no way diminished in my zeal to change things. i even switched careers recently to teach earth science. i remember a better world, yet am not ossified by the past either.
well put- your words inspire.

I have always been politically active, but in a more quiet way than my parents. And Hope is one thing that I've never been short on. I don't despair when things aren't going like I think they should and I don't get angry, I just keep going and hope to notice small changes along the way.
I've seen this in many people of our age. Change comes from the inside out, and from the grassroots. Change one heart or one head. I see so much in my own children that gives me hope. They are not color blind, or gay friendly as much as they see people as individuals. Our children will, with a little hope and hard work, be the ones who have fully assimilated the best of the Boomer's ideals into their daily lives.
This election proved that to me, as they came out in great number in favor of Gay Marriage, and of a President who is not of noticeably white European background. They were able to see past color to what the person was all about.
The Boomers should be proud that their children and grandchildren are living the lessons that they were taught by their elders, and should not despair. Every generation learns a little bit more, and so we progress. I believe that this last administration was just a last gasp for the old ways, and that eventually things will get better.
Not that we've seen the last of the extremes of either Right or Left. We just have to be vigilant about them and try to bring them along, or let them know that they will be left out.
Power secedes nothing without a fight. And so...on we fight.

Mine is songwriting and performing (click on my name!) As a recent grad with a new Master's in Humanities: Bardic Storytelling, I discovered that there are no jobs teaching Humanities... so I'm doing a second Master's in English, here at Texas A&M-Commerce. But the big thing that happened is that I'm taking a Poetry class. All these decades (more than three) of writing and performing my songs, and having written about 250 of them, I have never considered myself a poet nor studied under a great teacher. Now I am, and it is transforming my work and attitude! This is my passion, and teaching it to others would bee a dream fulfilled. These doors will surely open, bellesouth, and just like that great Campbell quote in your blog above, I'm happy just DOing what I do!
Some heartening words by Obama on religion and politics.

Did he have his arm around a chick or a guy?
it was definitely Tucker I saw last night. A Grateful Dead cover band (DSO) was playing. He was enjoying himself to say the least. Wouldn't expect him to dig that kind of music and hang with that crowd.
turns out he claims to be a Grateful Dead fan and attended ~50 shows. So there you have it.
I'd be greatful if Tucker was tuckered out!
So the Times runs this story about how Bush gave an executive order allowing military strikes in countries where we weren't at war. Pakistan, Syria, Somalia, etc... About 20 in all. Now you'll all remember how everyone (even Joe Biden) jumped on Obama about what a terrible idea it was to attack Osama in Pakistan if they had intel and Pakistan couldn't or wouldn't do it themselves? Well I have to wonder if this story about how the president was and had been actually carrying out this very idea was sat on by the Times, they way they sat on the warrantless wiretapping story, until after the election. Read the story, it doesn't look like something you could whip up in a week,
Secret Order Lets U.S. Raid Al Qaeda in Many Countries
of foreign goodwill. and creating more things for Obama to apologizer for and make him look weak.
What a great memory...love the song...
From a more positive & happy time...let's look to the future once again!!!
A Quiet Windfall For U.S. Banks
With Attention on Bailout Debate, Treasury Made Change to Tax Policy
By Amit R. Paley
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, November 10, 2008; A01
The financial world was fixated on Capitol Hill as Congress battled over the Bush administration's request for a $700 billion bailout of the banking industry. In the midst of this late-September drama, the Treasury Department issued a five-sentence notice that attracted almost no public attention.
But corporate tax lawyers quickly realized the enormous implications of the document: Administration officials had just given American banks a windfall of as much as $140 billion.
The sweeping change to two decades of tax policy escaped the notice of lawmakers for several days, as they remained consumed with the controversial bailout bill. When they found out, some legislators were furious. Some congressional staff members have privately concluded that the notice was illegal. But they have worried that saying so publicly could unravel several recent bank mergers made possible by the change and send the economy into an even deeper tailspin.
"Did the Treasury Department have the authority to do this? I think almost every tax expert would agree that the answer is no," said George K. Yin, the former chief of staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation, the nonpartisan congressional authority on taxes. "They basically repealed a 22-year-old law that Congress passed as a backdoor way of providing aid to banks."
Putin decided to bring back Chernobyl in a sub.

White on Latino.
The above action committee serves a gesture of futility.
I regret not posting without the proper attributions but please accept my understanding of this.
Earlier this election cycle, President Obama made a pledge to bring Governor George W. Bush (never really was a President, since he wasn't elected) and his crew of war criminals to justice. Shortly afterwards, and I do mean shortly, the Administration took aggressive action to bend law to favor their decisions to go into war. In other words, by all measures the Neo-Cons have pre-exonerated themselves.
President Obama need not waste time immediately pursuing this.
Thanks to bluegal for the video. I love me some Beatles. Here's another video people will like that was made by my friend Jay Smooth over @ Ill Doctrine

I'm confident that Obama with the power brought to him by Bush's 8 years of patriot acts and whatnots should give him sufficient resources to tear up any decisions made by former presidents.
If this is not pursuied, within the first year, it will never be pursuied. Mankinds memory of past times fade quickly, soon Bush will only be remembered as the misspeaking clown who caused mischief for 8 years. Ridiculed but nothing else.
I despice injustice in any form, unjustified massmurder makes me furious. He and his staff should not...can not get away with it!
I don't care which punishment they recieve, as long as it's something...or it sets an example for future american dictators that anything goes without retribution.
I understand the extatic feelings you at the moment have for Obama, but I'm a born sceptic and will watch closely from abroad these four years. But ofc I'll await him being sworn in and making his SoU before deciding to putting my guard up, he aint your prez yet even if the media (even in my country) sure makes people think otherwise.
And still no Bin Laden!
I hope at least it uses due process.
It's seems that Obama's victory might very well divide us more than ever before. Surprisingly it's not his opponents that are broadening the division but his supporters.
Million plus could attend Obama's inauguration
After all, Bush has pushed the bar down pretty dang low.
Obama wasn't expected to win in the first place. (I guess Obama being 'unelectable' is another addition to the list of Hillary's unadmitted misjudgements)
Well.. It's not wrong to have high expectations of the man. But think of it this way: For breaking the racial barrier and becoming the first African-American president, for bringing the Democrats back to power in a big way, for revolutionizing the way political campaigns in this country are conducted and for having given some historic speeches already, even if Obama accomplished nothing else during his presidency, he'd have to be considered a historic president.
Obama would almost have to make a conscious effort to transform himself into a below-average president.
It's much more difficult to be the next one in a job that one's predecessor did well. My stepdad told me that years ago; he was a hard act to follow. Did his job with the Red Cross extremely well.
Look, for example, at how people considered Clinton a good President... but only after several years of Bush with which to compare.
when sore loser Rethugs say Obama is the worst president EVER, for two reasons:
1. It's not even January yet.
2. These are the same people who said Bush was the greatest.
2009 looks so good right now :-)
people from all over the world. Almost all I spoke to were just so glad to have someone who is NOT a Rethug in the office now. They don't seem to expect Obama to change things overnight, but they feel at least that he sees that the US is a part of the world, not the center of the universe (and ruler over said) as has been portrayed for the last eight years. For that, they are grateful and hopeful of all our futures.
The super long election process this time was strange. Now every one ready to blow Bush out of the white house as soon as possible seems to be a mandate.
I remember just a few years ago, Canada's prime minister was pushed out of office early by the conservatives(he was going to de-criminalize pot). So why can't the CENTER-LEFT push the Radical-right out of the white house early, before Bush screws something else up?
Found a short Video, http://www.vimeo.com/2158645 , this was on election day.
America is not Canada. We have one mechanism for removing our president from power, impeachment. We do not have votes of no confidence, we do not have a way to dissolve Parliament. That is not how our governmental structure is set up.

Emanuel: Middle-Class Tax Cut, Economic Stimulus Package and Tax Hike on Those Earning More Than $250,000 to be Initial Focus of Obama - http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/20...
Newly designated White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said Sunday that the incoming Obama administration opposes attaching the Colombia Free Trade Agreement to an economic stimulus package. This is good. Colombia condones the murders of trade unionists. And there aren't enough labor practice protections in it, among other problems.

The proposal, a flip-flop from the Governator's opposition of a similar measure that failed two years ago, immediately garnered the ire of oil companies and Republicans and applause from Democrats and environmentalists.

i'm not gay, but i react so negatively when there are some who would take rights away from our fellow citizens. Prop 8 passed in San Diego and in california. my question is: i live in a very conservative section of San Diego, is there any other kind? Right before the election i noticed a preponderance of "yes on eight signs" appearing on people's lawns. Did i mention that not only are these people conservative, but cheap as well. if they had to pay for these signs the majority would not have. these are also god-fearing church-going folks. I drove past the nearby Catholic Church and all over their lawn were these same signs. I FEEL CERTAIN THAt not only were the ;priests preaching for 8's passage but they were also giving away the signs for display prior to the election. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. the church can proclaim and support anything they want... but not on my tax dollar. aren;t they tax exempt and in so being aren't they also prohibited from taking political stances. have the rules changed or am i just not understanding? help me understand this, please.
I haven't been following the issue as closely as I should have been. Florida had a similar constitutional amendment here and, like in CA, it passed, though I'm not nearly as surprised as what happened in CA.
Hopefully CA can get theirs overturned soon. After that, perhaps there will be a precedent to do the same here. Removing rights from groups is the last thing this country needs at this point.
...they still keep saying that those of us who married before Election Day are in limbo. (My husband and I got married on November 3.) That may be so, but I expect that our marriages will be upheld.
What I'm freakin' pissed off about is all the other gay people who want to marry and can't. People out here are hoppin' mad, and for good reason too. Protests are planned daily, all over California's cities; in fact, we're going to one this afternoon in San Jose. And we're not going to stop screaming until we get our rights back.
What happened, for those who don't know, is that the Supreme Court of California, back on May 15 of this year, affirmed the right of all couples -- same-sex included -- to marry, based on constitutional equal protection. This overturned the Knight Initiative (Prop. 22), that was written into the state Family Code in 2000 stating that marriage was to be only between one man and one woman. Well, conservatives got all pissed off of course because, all of a sudden with the Supreme Court's decision, men could marry men and women could marry women. So they came up with this Prop. 8 garbage that is actually a constitutional amendment, and got enough signatures to put it on the ballot. Its passage on November 4 now makes gay marriage unlawful again in California. (The Yes on 8 campaign, by the way, used the ugliest lies and tactics to deceive and scare voters that I've ever seen in a political campaign, and I've seen many.)
So, in California's situation, it's an example of rights being stripped from a certain subset of Californians -- rights that were AFFIRMED by the state Supreme Court. That's unlike situations in other states like Florida and Arizona, where the legal right for same-sex couples to marry never existed in the first place. So I hope that, based on that, people can see why this is completely OUTRAGEOUS and REPREHENSIBLE. Petitions have been filed with the California Supreme Court that insist that Prop. 8 is not a lawful amendment because it violates a minority's access to equal rights, and asks the court to nullify it. Hopefully, this is what will happen, and in that case it is unlikely that gay marriage could ever be seriously challenged again in California. It would also set a very important precedent for same-sex marriage, giving gays and lesbians across the country hope that one day they too will see an end to marriage discrimination.
Check out the petitions asking to annul Prop. 8 -- they are convincingly written, and represent an eloquent appeal for fundamental constitutional rights, principles on which this country was founded. The petitions are easily accessed from the court's website at http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/courts/supreme/.
If you think the stripping of basic rights from American citizens is outrageous, even if you live out-of-state, please step up and take action. To idly stand by, while others are divested of their equal rights, is dangerous and un-American.
The church organizations are stepping over the line getting involved in the political process, they can't be tax exempt and do this, as far as i know, unless Bush and the crazies legalized it.......

Just did a quick search, on Bushes faith based programs, seems Obama's 'old' church got 1.5 million in federal funding since 2003. I bet ya we even paid for the prop 8 signs, now how do u like them beans?
