This makes no sense considering two facts:
1. Iran has not developed any nukes nor will it be able to do so for many years.
2. Israel has enough nukes to blow up the planet on it's own.
Logical question: So why are we offering a Nuclear Umbrella? For what?
What, Israel doesn't have enough nukes of their own? Isn't it time for the world to come to the conclusion that Israel is THE problem in the middle east. They've committed so many crimes against humanity in the last 60 years, but truly started to accelerate their "fatwa" against the Palestinians in the 1990's. Can anyone blame the Palestinians for being angry? They've been shoved aside by EVERYONE. The Arab states don't want any part of them. THe UN makes high sounding statements that sit in obscurity and quietly die. The Israeli's kill 100 Arabs for every Jew killed. They bulldoze whole neighbourhoods. The Palestinians are little more than cattle to the Israeli's, suitable only for slaughter.
Israel cries that everyone wants to kill them all and shove them into the sea. The last time I checked, the only country that had any nuclear bombs in the area was Israel itself. Does anyone believe that they'd allow themselves to be slaughtered without a firestorm of nukes raining down across their neighbours?

Yet I'm searching, searching for the reason why Obama would make this declaration when it flies in the face of logic, reasoning, ethics, etc. Of course we all know the overwhelming power of AIPAC but still, this is a really strange thing for him to say for reasons already stated.

President-elect Barack Obama reportedly intends to offer a strategic pact to Israel promising a “devastating US nuclear response” against Iran in the event Iran launches a nuclear attack on Israel.
It's intrigueing to see that the Israeli's themselves seem to be somewhat flummoxed by Obama's plan.
Let's look to why that is. I'm just guessing around.
Apparantly the Israeli's want some kind of rock-solid American back-up on a pre-emptive strike on Tehran because of Tehran's "threatening rhetoric".
Perhaps Obama is doing some kind of a check-mate in this dangerous and moronic Israeli game by offering the nuclear umbrella only in the case of the event Iran launches an attack on Israel.
Effectively shutting down the pre-emptive attack BULLSHIT.
Maybe I'm just doing some wishful thinking.

Today, we are witnessing in Gaza the kind of ghetto the world thought it would never see again and the comparison was conjured up early this year by Israel’s deputy defence minister Matan Vilnai when he threatened “a bigger holocaust (shoah)” against the Palestinians in Gaza. Later, he explained away his use of the word as meaning “disaster”, when in fact it has emotional connotations well known to everyone. Either way, the threat was ominous enough.
