After a week in GB, I returned only to find out I had to go back to the same job.
Jobs are gettin more scarce here. But I've been around long enough that I still have guys asking me if I need work.
When I got back from GB, my boss gave me shit about being gone for a week. I said, Hey, I'm sorry my Dad died. fuckin asshole. He want's me to buy his business.
I might. But the price will have to come down now. And that's IF, I do it.
But, I'm thankful for being able to work still.

Day started out crap and was hoping the Turkey Day games would make things better; nope. When are they going to get rid of the Detroit game? Dallas has had its ups and downs but usually fields decent to good teams and sometimes great ones but Detroit is a perennial loser. It is time to either give someone else the game or rotate it like they do the late game.
On the bright side, C&L is indeed one of my favorites sites, hope your day was great. Cheers.
It's tradition. I don't care for Detroit either way and hate Dallas. I'm a long suffering Raider fan. But we must keep the long tradition of Dallas and Detroit.
is intended to be a factual statement
You are absolutely right.
I gave up on our Lions years ago.
But, WE DID start the tradition - not those freaks from Texass, and there is NO way they are taking that game from us!
It's the only damn thing Lions fans have that's any fun. So the rest of you will just have to suffer along with us!
Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.
Anyone catch the state trooper from Troopergate speaking out? Even more proof of what a liar Palin is. There has been 23 complaints against him. All came from the Palin family and her close friends. But...but...but, she's one of us. Doesn't matter. Her fans will support her no matter what. She could claim that water is dry and they'd defend her claim with the bible verses until the end. McCain has created a monster that can't be killed.
is intended to be a factual statement
I just finished watching the animated feature, BEOWOLF, and Palin is kind of like the evil-naked-monster-witch from the swamp. Her off-spring terrorize the countryside... and she just keeps-on-keepin-on seducing the "power-elite" of the Danish village by trading in political influence and GOLDEN GOBLETS.
hey........everybody have a happy thanksgiving. there's some of us up here in the lake tahoe area very thankful palin did not get elected.

I doubt it.

Either way, prepare for a long winter.
Donner, party of 36, your table is ready............
What is your conceptual, continuity?
I grant you it has been a longstanding tradition but damn does it have to continue. Well, maybe they can start a new tradition in 2021. A hundred years of Detroit Lions should be enough.
gump: Raiders played pretty well last week and Dallas sucked; thought it would have been a better game today.
Sorry but no! Lions will always be on Turkeyday, and it's only fitting - considering owner William Clay Ford Sr. is the biggest turkey in all of professional sports.
And besides, you got 10 years of watching Barry Sanders on Thanksgiving Day! By far the greatest running back EVER - with the possible exception of Jim Brown - and that alone was more than most teams can offer.
Emmit Smith? What a hoot! If Barry had played for the Cowboy's when they had five pro-bowlers on their offensive line, he would have rushed for 3,000 yards, while Emmit would have been kept busy passing around Gatorade on the sidelines.
Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.
As a Packers' fan and owner who watched damned near every game in which Sanders played, I won't hesitate for a second to tell you that Walter Payton (a great many of whose games I saw here in west Michigan, too) was head and shoulders above Sanders.
Payton had all of Sanders' moves, was a much better inside runner, could run over tacklers as well as leap over them (there was a good reason his coaches never had Sanders in at the goal-line), was a better pass and run blocker, was a better receiver(he occasionally lined up in the slot), and Payton threw a damned good pass whenever the Bears ran a halfback option.
Yes, Sanders was good for the quick strike, 80-yard touchdown run, but he was absolutely horrid when the Lions needed to run the clock and play ball-control offense. You've probably heard the old saw that defense wins championships, but what the talking heads fail to tell you is that defenses play a lot better when they get a chance to literally catch their breath. Walter Payton was a major factor in making the defense of the '85 Bears the best ever. And he made the otherwise so-so Bears defenses of the previous 10 years look much better than they actually were.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
And spent most of his illustrious career on horrible teams who had no quarterback or receivers...in other words, the opposing team knew Payton was going to get the ball. Despite this Walter Payton finished his career as the NFL's all time leader in yards, total yards from scrimmage, touchdowns, 100 yard games, on and on while playing football's most demanding position(running backs have the shortest life span in pro football).
There's not a player playing today who comes close to Payton as an all-around football player.
There were so many Packer-Bear games earlier in his career that I thought for sure the Pack would win easily, only to have Sweetness win it for the Bears...Got to the point that in the early '80s I just expected the Bears to win it, no matter that the rest of Payton's team mates weren't very good. And I never, ever felt that way about Sanders.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
You guys are delusional! I watched Payton too. He was a great player, but not in the same league as Barry - NOT EVEN CLOSE!
The only reason he was the #1 all-time rush leader, is because Barry quit in the prime of his career! He had at least another 5 or 6 seasons in him. During his phenomenal career, he only missed 1, that's ONE game!
He would have smashed Payton's record, and stomped all over it the following season, and finished with at least 25,000 yards if he would have played out his career.
And this, on the Lions of all teams. As it was, he played several less years than Payton, and had almost as many yards.
Don't forget also, that Payton played on some awesome teams the 2nd half of his career, including a super bowl winner.
Plus, the lions had some good teams in the 90's, and the only reason was Barry Sanders. He had averaged one 40 yard plus run for ever twelve carries. He had many many games where he would have two or three runs of over 40 yards. Nobody is even close to those numbers. Not even Jim Brown.
The Lions have had one winning season since he retired eleven years ago, and that was a 9-7. If not for Barry, they might have gone 0-16 long before 2008. Take that you Packer and Bear fans. Hah!
Sorry, but your going to have to do a lot better than Walter Payton if you want to compare a running back to Barry Sanders. Payton good, but not even in the same realm as Barry. NOT EVEN CLOSE!
Regardless, it's fun to debate a topic which isn't as depressing as the current economic situation.
Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.

But Hey, I'm thankful I get to correspond with people like you bud.
Then again, I workin on perfectin a mango martini.:)
What is your conceptual, continuity?
Shit just sort of came together, or fell apart, that way yesterday. Drove down from SLO on Tues, checked the dog and gear into the motel, then had the truck start making a loud tapping noise yesterday coming back from the office; pretty sure timing chain is about to let loose. Of course, getting a mechanic (let alone a rental car) on Thanksgiving weekend is a bitch. I'll get through it.
Have a cold one for me too, my friend. Cheers!
"Parachutes are allowed in checked or carry-on baggage, but may not be worn in flight."

I have a feelin that your timing belt didn't completely give way.
I know what your talkin about. You might have gotten lucky.
Here's hoping you did!
bottoms up. adios mi amigo.
Those mango martinis are catching up to me. And I still haven't perfected them yet. I'll resume the effort on Saturday. And Sunday, and on
and on and on............
Be very careful with the repair shop. Make them prove that your belt snapped. If it did, you need a new motor. It can't be repaired.
Trust me on this one. What year? What make?
You may have fouled an hydrolic lifter. That happened to me before.
Let it warm up, and see if it goes away.My old Ford Ranger did that ay 70K miles. It lasted to over 250k. It usually took 3-5 minutes to warm up. Then the lifter quieted down.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
It's making noise both cold and hot, loudest at higher RPM and under load. Lighter-pitched sound than a rod knock. I was thinking the timing chain may be tapping the cover (prior to going bye-bye in a BIG way). But a lifter could be it too.
Off to the mechanics tomorrow. Work will (probably) pay for it. I wouldn't mind a rental car for awhile...
"Parachutes are allowed in checked or carry-on baggage, but may not be worn in flight."
---Southwest Airlines
You need a new motor. They can fix it. But something will be wrong with it. I've seen this movie way too many times. If the belt is gone. You need a new motor. period!
Don't let them talk you into anything else. Trust me on this one.
If they fix it w/o giving you a new motor. You'll have problems for the rest of the vehicles life. As sure as the sun comes up !!

I've also beeh homeless with my kids in a cheap motel being paid for by Catholic Charities.
I've also lived in cheap motels (paid weekly from my job at Checker Auto) always on the verge of being out on the street. Got head lice in one of those.
And, my kids and I spent the winter of 1998-9 in a battered women's shelter.

..when that '77 blizzard happened and was fool enough to ignore that Prince Edward County was declared a disaster area. The drummer was driving and when we came to a drift he just gunned it and plowed through. It worked until we came to a section 3 ft. deep and about 200 yards long. Had to be rescued by the Canadian military.
It actually turned out to be a great time, we unpacked our stuff and played to a snowed-in air force base. People came from miles around on snowmobiles with cases of beer and bottles of liquor.

Goodman is a freelancer and may not have known this. Try it sometime. Tell the customs people you're a journalist and see what happens. It's a surefire ticket to secondary.

a professional (albeit not FOX) organization would have their ducks in a row before going to a foreign country ... but I'm sure all will be revealed ...

and just exactly what 'reason' was the most prominent progressive voice in America guilty of?

I did not realize her credentials as the most prominent progressive voice in America entitled her to be waved through into any country she wished. I guess I'm just not progressive enough to demand the same thing of US customs.

given the last 8 years I kind of hoped we werent the same as the US ... that's the point.
anyway I'm done ...
I prolly overreacted cause I believe in the woman and it pissed me off to see this only an hour or so ago...
Peace!

It's NOT THAT SHE WAS STOPPED, for christ's sake. It's WHY, and the get the fuck out in 48 hours notice she got.
But go ahead and make shit up in your own little mind there, Peter G. I've seen you read all sorts into stuff, that wasn't anywhere near the mind of the OP. You're predictable that way.

rather a lot into Goodman's own statement. If you'd care to check any assertion I made about crossing the border to work in either country feel free to investigate. Goodman writes very interesting stuff but that doesn't mean she isn't above a little breast beating. She may feel her credentials as a journalist are a ticket to ride but others may differ. You might recall what happened at the Munich Olympics or even Atlanta. Yes they're taking security very seriously. They should.

...and I will now leave it in the hands of the lovely MK because its way too late on the Least Coast for this ...

If such was their intention then it was a moderately shitty thing to do. Although I agree with miss-kitty about ninety-five percent of the time it's never stopped her from issuing a tune up on those occasions when we have disagreed and she feels it is warranted. I rather respect that.
Hasa Diga Eebowai
She HAS been stopped before, for an hour, going from Detroit to Windsor, and it was no biggie. Not a scouring of thoughts, words and deeds, but a routine stop at the border. This was not routine. The clip is 14:28 and is raw footage of Amy speaking to CBC reporter Cathy Tomlinson.

"I've spent more time being detained at US customs for a lot less reason."
'For a lot less reason' ...?
...just EXACTLY WHAT T.F. WAS the 'reason' Amy Goodman was interrogated at the border ... in the first place ? Jesus Christ! .... You are beyond hope.

After her (unjustified, imo) arrest at last year's GOP convention, her name was put on the DHS watch list. And guess with whom the DHS shares that watch list.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
no need for the Canadians to follow suit. And really, picking an activist journalist is the wrong person to go after. She's seen a lot worse than Bob and Doug Mackenzie, standing guard up in Blaine under the Peace Arch

but ninety minutes of waiting hardly constitute cruel and unusual punishment. By the way I have no particular grudge against US customs. They were just doing their jobs and they were entirely professional in their conduct with me at least.
Hasa Diga Eebowai
True enough Peter, but I so miss the old days. We used to go over for chicken wings and cheap beer because the NY State bars were open later than in Canada.
If you smelled like beer and could say "Canadian", you were in. The border guys said, "Have a good time." Good times.

Sweet!
to get the hell out of Dodge in 48 hours? Did they demand to know what was on your computer, what was on your mind?
No one said it was cruel and unusual. You always draw shit out and throw it into the conversation like it's part of the issue.
Here's the deal: She was going up there to promote her book. She was looking into Canadian healthcare. And like you, the CBSA made incorrect assumptions about the subject at hand and grilled her because they figured she was there to make trouble for the Olympics.
So it doesn't surprise me that you identify with them and by extension, stick up for them.

Unfortunately I ain't got no one to stick up for.

my laptop. And made calls to confirm that I was registered to attend the conference in Houston I was attending. No harm no foul. Are we talking about the same woman who was arrested for covering the RNC convention in Minnesota? I'm just saying that it might be nice to keep things in perspective. I'm quite certain Goodman has endured worse than a ninety minute wait at customs.

I'm afraid, when push come to shove, we Canadians probably are not that much better. As I said (below) it's not us common folk doing it.
I'm going to blame Harper, because it's out C&L holiday open thread, and I can.

Our whole train was stopped at the border crossing into NY State, at Niagara Falls (also my hometown, but I was coming from Toronto that day), for 2 hours. "Nazis" with machine guns and trained guard dogs got on and badgered many people, enough to make them cry.
It's not us common folk, on either side of the border doing it.
PEACE.
(I know I've told that story here before, but holy mackerel. Haven't been back in the USA since.)

This reminds me of a story on Bill Moyer's Journal, about a small town that sits right on the border of the US and Canada, and in some building like the library, you need a passport just to go from one room to another, and outside the library just to go down this street or another.
It didn't used to be that way, the town was proud of it's citizens mingling from Canada and America, but then 9-11 happened.
Damn Canucks with their box-cutters!

Oh yeah. I've entered the US on my own a few times, by boat. Once into Michigan. I reported entering the next morning: I just said, "I came in by boat last night." The Michigan border guy said, "You shouldn't really do that. Thanks for reporting your entry." The end.
Now I'd be en route to Guantanamo, fer sure.
Another time was a booze run to the liquor store in NY State. We just landed, shopped and left.
In the old days we were people, not terrists.

a Nexus card. It saves no end of trouble. Alas for the good old days when a drivers license or a birth certificate was all the ID you needed to cross the border. Most times they didn't even look at them either.
Hasa Diga Eebowai
I just don't cross the border anymore. I won't even take a flight that stops at a US airport. Besides, do they give Nexus cards for booze runs (half of us were drunk and in drag.)
Load up the boat, we're goin' shopping. What a lark. I wouldn't dare try it now!!!

they bust drunks at the border. Expanded customs arrest powers. We use to have such a good time in Detroit. Sigh. Mind you I'm not a big fan of drunken driving but it's not just the drivers they're busting so a DD is no guarantee of clearing customs.
Hasa Diga Eebowai
God, that guy is an idiot.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
I'm grateful I lived in a time when crossing the border meant just a pleasant hello and stating your citizenship. When boarding a plane was pleasant and welcoming, all you had to do was show your boarding pass, not strip. When a flight to England was a real party, with smoking, and an open bar. Everyone had a good time and no one was profiled. Cuz those days are gone forever, and younger folks couldn't even imagine such.

the other night. The owner basically gave the middle finger to the State of CA when the state banned smoking, what seven or eight years ago. Well, the cops finally caught up with the place last week--no more smoking.
The place just isn't the same now that you can see the dirty walls and torn carpeting, not to mention the smell of the restrooms, so clearly...

left the house, so now that I turned up the vol. to watch yer vid, instead of hearing the vid's music I hear Megadeth's Wake Up Dead over it. Weird juxtoposition of the crowd at the tables and the song!

When I was in the Air Force I'd smoke some weed and do some coke, then turn on Jerry Falwell with the music off, and Alice Cooper's Sick Things and I Love the Dead playing.
I also like watching the movie Metropolis with Gary Numan playing on his subsequent albums.

It gets a little crazy with the seven of them around, but it's making very happy right now to see Jeremy wiggling with happiness and turkey instead of cowering in the cold with a bad leg and ribs like I found him all those months ago. :)
