Now we can say: President Obama
The media uniformly had Obama's Electoral College vote at 207 at 8 pm PST.
The networks just called it, because polls hadn't closed in the West, particularly here on the West Coast.
But there's little question Obama is going to win the 73 votes in California, Oregon, and Washington alone. Now that the polls have closed, we can say that.
That puts his total at 280, ten more than the 270 needed. And there will be more now that the West Coast polls have closed.
You can start celebrating now.

We can all say we were there...
President Obama 2008!
A LANDSLIDE!!!
May you govern wisely and well, avoiding the pitfalls of your predecessors and bringing dignity and respect for the law back into American political life. We are counting on you!
Oh, and Stephen Colbert has on earphones and a blindfold. That's what we can expect from the opposition, along with whining and complaining. And I just love it.
after 8 years of hell.
Amen! This was a day we long have waited for.
Politics is for the present, but an equation is for eternity. Albert Einstein
This is what "we've had enough" looks like.
Next step, Cheney behind bars.
From your lips to Dog's ears.
Celebrate tonight. The real work begins tomorrow.
I hope he can quickly help us put the last eight years behind us. We need to heal.......
Well done Obama and team
Time for a well deserved drink.

We have hopes that Norman 'freebie' Coleman is out on his arse.

Palin Accepts Call of Congratulations … from Napoleon!
and possibly a landslide.
After 8 years of hell, this is a great day and a great day for America.
Obama will have to be one of our best presidents to be successful with the epic challenges he's inheriting. He's shown great promise so far.
Isn't happy, but I'm elated. This is amazing... just amazing.

Fire a Liberal — it'll make you feel better... I for one intend to do it tomorrow... NY is a right to Work State, I can fire anyone i want for any reason or for no reason (as long as it isn't racial or gender discrimination)... Their are a handful of spoiled self-righteous twenty-somethings who work for me... they have no idea what my politics are and have shamelessly worked on Obama stuff at the office... like all narcissist's, they assume everyone thinks like they do... tomorrow two of them will learn the hard way that they were wrong... Here...
The whining has already begun.
in making this stunning Obama victory possible.
We did it! Sen. McCain we thank you for your service, but:

Now go celebrate!
C'mon, Evolution, you can do better than this...
YES WE DID!
WTG, America i'm proud of ya!
From a military veteran's standpoint, I can say that I am very excited! I was tired of watching the military serve largely under a party who for the most part never served themselves. I don't have that problem with the Dems. Many of them are veterans and when it comes to Obama, he has picked some top notch people to advise him. Hell, I'm so excited I may even volunteer to re-enlist at some point.
I'm drunk and happy, woohoo!!!!
Bite my shiny metal ass.

I was rudely awakened by the shouting of my drill sgt one morning. He was screaming "Yea-fucking-ha!!!"
I just woke my kids up with that same bellow of joy!
PS: Obama 369 with 2 from Nebraska...
there are tons of whites and other races in that amazing crowd
mccain is now conceding
im gonna cry
YES YOU DID!

The WORK has JUST BEGUN PEOPLE!
true, oh, so true, but then again we're not spinning wheels anymore and we have a leader who has garnered world wide admiration. President Barack Obama.
Finally I can be proud of my country again. Thank you, to all the folks who stood in line for hours!
Our stature and respect in the world just went up immeasurably.
Congratulations to the entire Obama team and everyone that voted for him.
Yes We Can in not just a great campaign slogan because we took it to heart...YES WE DID!!!!
It is a source of joy to the rest of world.
I thought I was going to have to learn French and re-up my passport. This is great.
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tears of Joy. Tears of f'n JOY!!!
NOBODY 2012
IMAGINE THAT! UNTHINKABLE! ;P
FWIW, his speech is honest and genuinely sad. I don't respect the guy, but I can respect his call that he will aid Obama leading in these difficult times. And urging all to give him our good will, to find compromise... of course, his supporters yell out their objections, but at least an honorable end to a dishonorable campaign...
I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I've been running ever since
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will
It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die
Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will
I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me don't hang around
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will
Then I go to my brother
And I say brother help me please
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees
Ohhhhhhhhh.....
There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will
for PRESIDENT OBAMA!!
Oh my god, I'm laughing and crying at the same time!
And, oy, what a hanging over I will have in the morning!
DING DONG the WICKED WITCH IS DEAD!
I am chocked up and crying! That, and I also just shot off 2 New Year's poppers outside, screaming "Go Obama." Good thing: 1) I live in the woods. 2) All my neighbors are Dem's. ;-)
Congrats and THANK YOU to all of you on these boards who have kept my spirits up, supported my blog posts and hey, are just damn good people!
Are work now, is just beginning.
Thank God! My mother and her right wing friends are probably Freakin! Thank God he won. My faith in my fellow Americans is finally restored.
We're looking at a landslide and a clear mandate. Sitting here at my desk, I can hear the sound of fireworks going off in my Tacoma, Washington neighborhood. I think people may actually learn to hope again.
Damn, I broke my mighty-mouse , I guess in the excitement and all.
Anyways, the great thing about it is that Obama's campaign showed me what a great leader he is. He kept it dignified and positive.
Let's celebrate now, but we have much work to do after Jan 20 to clean up all the shit.
Goerge Bush, Cheney, Rove, don't leave town, muthafuckers.
It is early morning here in Iraq, I just finished showering when one of the soldiers popped in exited and saying he was going to shower later. As I walked back to my room several of the guys were shouting and cheering and chanting "Yes we can!" over and over again. Never let it be said that the military is all republicon.
The euforia has yet to set in, all I know is that I am proud to finally have a leader who is worthy of my salute, I hope that the current pathetic coward who is now sleeping in PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA'S bed wont try to do anything overtly stupid with the time he has left. He has hoodwinked most of the country (unlike many I never believed in him even after 9-11), and will now most likely slink away with the rest of the dinner thieves, his legacy forever set in stone as the worst president ever.
Today looks like a good day

Government + the Federal Reserve = organized crime
Due to return the first week of March, back to Ft Huachuca in Arizona a very conservative chunk of the state (except for the town of Bisbee). 15 months, December to March, this has been the brightest day thus far.

Rock steady, drive on! Today is a wonderful day indeed!
I just came out of a chat community which is very international...I couldn't believe how happy people from other countries were about Obama being projected as the winner. Then it occurred to me, this is going to do so much to improve our country's standing in the world community, something that never occurred to me would happen. And to think, in our lifetime we are able to see America elect an African-American as President. We have seen history being made. My God, I'm actually proud. I never thought I could say those words again..."I'm proud of my country".
Government + the Federal Reserve = organized crime
Yes. It will lift us in the world's eyes and it will lift so many African Americans living in the US... (along with many like myself who have witnessed a most positive and defining moment in history!)

Most of the crowd is polite, but some booing and a few comments from the methhead types.
of mature people and VERY sore losers.

i told one of my african american friends that he would win...she laughed at me...told me there was no way that america would elect a black man
she just called me crying
it really is a beautiful day
Hillary said over and over again, "He can't win! He can't win!"
She really believed this, and I think this is why she stayed in the race so long. I am so glad she was wrong -- Americans knew what they wanted, a real shift in government, with all of our concerns taken into account and all of our participation welcome.
It is truly awe-inspiring to see how many people and groups of people world-wide are acting as if they "own" Obama. So diverse, yet he managed to reach something we all have in common. Maybe just our "better angels", ignoring cultural, racial, gender, and political divisions.
Norman Coleman to get the bum's rush.
I live on a college campus, and students everywhere are cheering as loud as humanly possible. It feels great.
I am really proud to be an American. My faith has been restored, if only for an evening.
Well said.

Bravo, America! BRAVO!!!!!!
Thank you everyone for making history and ushering in new hope and change we so desparately need.
I'm so proud of President Obama. So incredibly proud!!
You sealed McSames faith.
Let's thank "Joe the Plumber" for being the dumbest campaign mascot ever.
And of course, let us thank the worst campaign team in US history: Rick Davis, Steve Schmidt, Tucker Bounds, Nicole Wallace, and Nancy Fartoohugan or whatever. The campaign was a fucking joke.
Thank you to Tina Fey, as well!!!

John's concession speech did more for his stature than his two years of campaigning. what was obvious is that john is way bigger than his constituency.
Now on to President Obama. He will be eloquent and gracious, he always is. I absolutely believe that tomorrow will be a new day. the dow will jump and the sun will shine once again. I never thought it would come in my lifetime. Jesse's tears were mine. Let's all come together now and right this ship and let the world watch in wonder.
I apologize for the crowd. Lots of us voted for Obama.
Only when the last tree has died
and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught

the fact that he wasnt able to be himself during the entire campaign is what cost him
it is up to mccain and others to reform the republican party to its roots
they must get rid of the social conservatives
John's concession speech did more for his stature than his two years of campaigning. what was obvious is that john is way bigger than his constituency.
It was not obvious, until defeat and I am not sure how that really looks to anyone else, but to me it rang somewhat hollow after witnessing such a backhanded and hypocritical campaign from a man called "The Maverick"... I wish him well, nonetheless.
Now let's oust Lieberman!
Make no motto of love that worships war
but it certainly is the time for us to unite, cross lines and start solving our country's problems and challenges together.
This is a time for healing and embracing each other as one nation.
some tasty champagne with my lovely wife. Congratulations President Obama!
myself. Almost enough to heal the hurt in my heart from the last 4 years. No, make that 8.

These are all the people that want to help Bush move out. All they need is a case of beer.

Any pitchforks in evidence?
Let's help him pack! Early Move Out Special, Bush! You move out now and maybe...maybe you can escape prosecution for crimes against humanity.

Hell we'll bring our own beer! They'd just try to pass that Cindy Lite off on us anyway.
I hope to dear god this means I don't ever ever ever have to hear the name Sarah Palin again. Hopefully she spends the rest of her days on a small island off the coast of Alaska staring at Russia.
From my home in Arkansas I can see her from my back porch... She is indeed crying and gnashing her pearly whites.

in his campaign as in the concession speech he just made things might have been different. The better man won.

Raised a drink to the stars. Its showtime! Let the change begin!
Kris, my son, was at the North Georgia Campus and watching the election returns at the cafe with his fellow Young Democrats. NG is a public military college and a senior cadet was badmouthing Obama and saying how all the military loves McCain.
Weellll, Kris, who was wearing his Army t-shirt was asked by some to go talk to the fellow. Kris whipped out his ID card that showed that he is a Sergeant and the cadet shut up. There were some "pleasant" words about the military being just Americans - not Republicans or Democrats. It helped that Kris is an Iraqi War veteran.
There was peace in the cafe after that - until Obama won and then there was dancing and cheering and laughing.
Hubby and I did a little dancing at home too - kind of hard when the two folks at 60 plus but it was fun.
Go America.
Just one more who has followed this fight on this site for four agonizing years, and hasn't been willing to let himself accept until now. Not with any great speech, not with any McCain flub, not with any promising poll. Finally, finally, finally, I will rejoice. This is, of course, a great day for black Amercians. But I tell you, it is also a great day for white Americans like me, and every other. The road ahead will be beyond hard. But at lest we're on the right one. Damn near forty years old, and I actually teared up at the site of Americans dancing in the streets when it was called. An amazing day.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

In Repug districts (McCain/Palin signs) later in the wee hours.
McCain was gracious in defeat. Too bad his followers were still so full of hate and anger. They've run this country into the ground with their hateful ideology over the last 30 years but still take no responsibility.
Missy Palin was shedding tears. Don't cry for us, Evita!
Mccain's speech was very gracious, but the catcalls of his audience was sickening, the ones booing at obama's name- I think I heard another person shout the'N' word, could be wrong....
I hope the yellow toothed geezer retires from public life and is never seen on tv again...
Palin can go back to Alaska and go back to shooting animals, she's not wanted down here in the '49'....
I had to change the channel rather than listen to those animals bemoan their loss.
I remember eight years ago, when Chimpie stole the election -- now keep in mind this was before we really knew what kind of shitturd he would turn out to be -- that, although I was disappointed that Al Gore did not win, I still felt that as Americans we needed to rally behind our new president and hope that he guided us on the correct course. Needless to say, it didn't take long to figure out that the course he was leading us down was shit creek.
The goons in Phoenix are an embarrassment to this country by their lack of complete class and grace. I would like to think that our country is made of better stuff.
Bless you, President Obama. Please restore glory to our country. You've got one hell of a challenge.
America.. not just for reactionary jackasses anymore.
WooT!
I'm sure the right wing has already formulated plans to destroy Obama- I'm sure Rush Limbagh will develop his entire show around venting hate at Obama...
Quite the ass-kicking, eh?
On related note, I thought John McCain's speech was excellent and it's clear why so many people admire the man.
I may have to also, but my first impression was that he conceded to a race vote. The early exit polls showed this was not won by race votes. Or even younger voter votes. I may be wrong at the end of the day, but I'm 42 and white and sure as hell didn't vote for anything other than making the right choice.
McCain held me for a couple minutes then lost me. I was almost open to a cabinet position for him. He, and his supporters, blew it.
yeah, I found that problematic about his concession speech. It was a victory for african-americans and they must sure feel proud for themselves. WTF... most exiting polls showed obama trouncing McCain except in the geriatrics....
All my years as a white Irish dude who wanted racial harmony but being called a ****** lover and other names--all down the drain, baby!!! C-E-L-E-B-R-A-T-E!!! GOD BLESS THE USA!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUJztI884M
...your take on McCain's concession speech was right on. He is a good man, campaign rhetoric notwithstanding. By the way, as a 57-year hockey fan, may I say "Don Cherry rules!"
I'm still amazed it happened- thank God- It makes me hope American can be returned to sanity-It makes me hope the right wing filth can be driven from power.
I hope the wars can end.....
I suspect 25 years from now you will all recall what you were doing the moment you heard Obama won......
Thank you America, you've restored my faith in this country!!!!
This is a truly a magic moment, it's like a new door has been opened to America's future..One of hope...
A name and a President one can be proud of.
2009 is going to be a good year, and theres a lot to do, eight years of misrule to tidy up and mistakes corrected.
The World also now knows we have an intelligent leader,
so theres reason for them (and us) to sit and talk now.
We are on the cusp of a brave new world, something great awaits.
Maybe even world peace and sanity.
Obama invokes McCain's name in his acceptance speech and all you hear is applause.
Republicans. Please. Lose the hate already.
Senator Obama is now President-Elect Obama and this is cause for celebration! The work is just BEGINNING, however. We must come together as one nation, support the vision our new leader brings and, as Gandhi is quoted as saying "Be the change you wish to see in the world." May it be so!
I love his point that he will listen to us, especially when we disagree with him. How freaking refreshing!
And, wonderful to hear the win isn't the change we need... it's the chance to change things. Excellent speech!
Yes! my faith in democracy and the American people has been restored!
before this pretend prez is frogmarched in shame out of the oval office in January, he can still wreak a lot of havok to cement his legacy as the worst ever. we must be ever vigilant and never allow what has happened in the last 8 years to ever occur again.
was the best acceptance speech I've ever heard or even read about.
Hasa Diga Eebowai
Finally.
It's been one hell of a long day, we had a death in the family. I didn't mention this before because it's a bummer. So it's kinda hard to celebrate but maybe the best way to accept the blessing of an Obama victory is soberly.
I feel proud of my vote and the direction I hope this country will take for my son and your sons and daughters.
However, I am not proud of my state of Oklahoma. It looks like we'll reelect James Inhofe and Sally Kern. You probably noticed the embarrassing red silhouette of Oklahoma in the early return maps. I don't know what's wrong with these people, other than too much Faux news, too many propaganda emails, too little education and too much evangelism.
I'll be alienated for voting Obama, but I don't give a damn because we did it!!!
Peace and goodnight.
His humbleness is rather amazing. He will listen to everyone.
I live in Oklahoma and when I vote, I know it's going to be on the short end of a 65-35 split.
Just be proud of yourself, and being on the right side of history.
...it's bad enough that a jackanape like inhoffe was re-elected... i truly do feel bad for you in having such neighbours to endure, but at least you're not in a state like alaska that will re-elect not only a complete jackass, but a felon as well.... wtf is wrong with some people...?... even georgia pisses me off for the rampant racism i've seen coming from there...
in the past, i've been given the opportunity to consider relocating there for work and at that time i "explored it remotely" and thought it looked like a pleasant place.... now, i'm thinking of promoting my services there specifically for purposes of telling everyone who responds that there's no bloody way i'd EVER relocate to a racist hellhole sewer garbage pit of bile like that....
but hay... this IS a GREAT day and i know people like you have a rough row to hew... and that there ARE decent people in places like oklahoma and georgia... you need our support and to know that you're surrounded by troglodytes because you can make a difference...
i'm sorry to hear about your family tragedy and hope the pain recedes quickly...
Oh my God.
I'm shaking my head in disbelief here.
I kind of suspected that would happen, but I was being very cynical.
Wow, sounds like Alaskahoma.
You just can't fix stupid no?
Anyway, thank you for the kind words.
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wife forced me to use a quiet one :)
And so, once again, the torch is passed to a new generation of Americans.
Congratulations.
I am excited and thrilled and exhausted and proud and soooo happy.
My sincerest congratulations to Obama, Biden, their familes, all our new Dem. Senators, and Reps.
I knew we could do it ! And I knew THEY could do it !
Peace to you all...ahh, I'm going to sleep so well tonight.
This long battle is over.
Though as much as I hate to sound as pessimistic as Rachel Maddow, we cannot rest on our laurels. The GOP is not dead, and there are more than a few pissed-off white supremacists out there that could throw a toolbox full of wrenches into the gears. We must remain vigilant and give our next president all the support we can.
this is NOT over... not by a long shot... they're going to continue plotting and blocking and whining and just generally behaving like obstinate children... everything they do will be with an eye toward regaining power... they will NOT stop exaggerating everyvissue until they can convince enough people that they are the torch-bearers destined to rally all the sheep living in fear...
"there is nothing to fear but fear itself"
the road ahead IS rife with danger and filled with pain but the only way to move forward is with our heads held high... and by living our lives in the world as it can be, not as it is...
as a white male in my late forties, i am a canadian who is now very proud of america... tonight, i am reminded of my youth during an awakening by youth then of committing to higher ideals during the dawning of a new age for countries, government and politics... and after watching that early dream fade nearly every decade following, i am happy to see that it was a flame that has not been extinguished...
this is a new dawn of hope for peace in this world and i am cautiously optimistic, but hopeful nonetheless...
thank you to everyone who voted, to everyone who worked hard on the campaign and to everyone who fought back against the bickering of spite-filled children... and most especially, thank you C&L for all the great work you've been doing...
i'm not an american but i am damned proud of you.... now let's party, then get some rest, then let's roll up our sleeves and put this world onto the right track because we have a long road ahead of us before we are ready to explore our inheritance amongst the stars...
damn!... i loved cnn's holographic technology... 8-D
Well done guys. 8 years of telling people over here in the UK that you were cool and finally you proved me very very right. To use one of your quaint sayings, AWESOME. I'm quite tired now because its 5.30am. Day off today. Well done again. Big hugs all round.
Yes we did!
I have never been more compelled or more proud to hang out my flag. It is OUR America again!
Big rough tough dude I am. It's going to take awhile to get to the pride I should be feeling right now for my country. I was adjusting to the feeling of not feeling ashamed for once. It was like having shackles removed that had been there so long I almost forgot they were there. After the last eight years full of crap like Abu Ghraib, Guantanomo, Katrina, and countless other nastiness, not feeling shame for once is a relief and an alien feeling. I look forward to feeling the pride soon enough
I voted for my daughters today. I will get to look them in the eye and tell them that I helped give them a better future.
....in a time of war....NO MATTER WHAT???!!!
McCain is an asswipe, Good riddance!!!!!!
Bye Sarah, you can now go to jail.... Finally.
I never thought I'd see this day come, but I'm not surprised a person like President Obama (my god) brought us here.
Congrats America.
We are breathing a little easier now.
Sincerely,
The rest of the planet.
Thank you C&L for keeping us focused and helping us remain sane during this crazy-making campaign.
Here's to hoping that this means we never ever have to endure Joe the Plumber or the Moose Lady and the First Dude again! Or silly scaremongering about a middle name! May a thousand stupid lies finally be put to rest.
Congratulations America!
It seems that the area around Obama's old school in Jakarta went nuts. I'm ecstatic. I've been following his road to the white house via everything I can (esp CAL), I'm so happy I feel like crying,

Last night, I was waiting for one of the pundits to begin a monologue with the words, "Barack Obama's failed Presidency." and continue with, "He's had forty-five seconds and nothing has changed."
It will take years for the Fourth Estate to regain credibility.
hsve to say i just took the flag down from the rafters in the garage and hung it outside. I live in an ultra conservative neighborhood. Hope they understand why i chose today to hang it And the next time i hear the star spangled banner, i'll probably sing. damn, that will feel good. People of color (all colors) join the mainstream today. Today we can tell our kids you truly can grow up to be president...and mean it.
