Obama Wins! In Dixville Notch, that is

This has to be a good omen:

DIXVILLE NOTCH, New Hampshire (CNN) -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama emerged victorious in the first election returns of the 2008 presidential race, winning 15 of 21 votes cast in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.

People in the isolated village in New Hampshire's northeast corner voted just after midnight Tuesday.

It was the first time since 1968 that the village leaned Democratic in an election.

Obama's rival, Republican John McCain, won 6 votes.

Just the beginning, perhaps.

Has it finally come?

I can see my polling site from my apartment window here in NYC. There's a very, very long line....it's going to be a long day.

Three hour wait in the rain and then another 45 minutes inside before she could vote. Sure hope this go right .... (or should i say left)

I THINK LONG LINES ARE A GOOD THING. MAYBE BY NEXT ELECTION HUGE TURNOUT WILL BE EXPECTED AND THEY WILL BE PREPARED FOR LARGE NUMBERS.

Let's hope that this is the FIRST OF MANY Obama victories today.

theWalrus!

Sorry. I never use the "f" word.

Oh I do all the time,

Not advisable during Vespers though.

GOP Shenanigans Start Early, Tries to Scotch Dixville Notch

You can see the voting line from your apartment? You should be governor.

Hmmm....maybe I'll make a run.....can I borrow $50 million bucks from you?

Here's hoping you are the shape of things to come.
"The whole world is watching to see if America is who she says she is."

as we type...

Nope, how do you think McBush got 6 votes?

I wish we could get a peek at the future just to prepare ourselves for what is ahead.

I watched the Obamas voting. They had their little girls with them. They were laughing and talking while they filled out their ballots. I so want to watch this little family for the next eight years...in the white house.

I was in Florida for the 2000 election --- we used optical scan in my area. I've been in Michigan since and we use optical scan machines here as well. The polling place was rather busy --- a hundred people went trough in less than 30 minutes. I watched the kids while wifey voted(#104) and she watched the kids while I voted (#205). Literally, 101 people went trough the polling place in 30 minutes and there was NO LINE!!! My polling place had about a dozen booths set up to fill in the bubble and two optical scan machines --- one of which wasn't being used yet. The optical system is so easy --- fill in the bubble or connect the arrow.

I don't understand why these are not used more readily. I can't find a compelling case against them. My machine didn't give a receipt; however, I trust the system enough AND the PAPER vote still exists if a recount needs to be performed.

Paper receipts are useless on electronic machines because a programmer could write code to print out on thing yet tally another. I'm a programmer so I can say with much assurance that doing the above would indeed be easy as pie.

Optical voting machines are the way to go IMHO. Get these crappy touch screens out of the polling places.

Just about every touch screen is gone from florida now. We have always had the optical scanner in my area and during all the recounts in 2000 they didn't find one error here on our ballots.

Easy to use, but the lines for early voting were still long. Not sure how much was due to the multiple ballots (required at early-voting sites) or the optical scan system itself. Seemed that some of the older people had trouble seeing the "bubbles" to fill-in.

Sure would have been nice to have a copy of my ballot for my own record as well...

We're using paper ballots/optical scan here in central PA. The voting area was busier than I've seen it before with a bunch of hoo-hahs all yuk-yuking in line about "spreading the wealth" (I'm in Pennsyltucky so I'm a lone voice in the wilderness around here).

But I have to agree - took about 15 minutes from start to finish. I like the bubble forms too.

And can I just say how I almost felt a sense of catharsis placing my vote for Obama? It just felt damn good for some reason...

Dixville? Well I didn't see that one coming.

I'm in a Chicago suburb and we have the optical scan also. So easy to use. I haven't voted yet but I will be going to in about an hour. Since I'm retired and at home, I thought I would give the working people time to vote first. OF course I'm voting for Obama. It's a beautiful sunshiny day here-going to be about 70 degrees. I have to keep remembering it's November not September.

The anticipation is killing me.

It's a cool damp cloudy day here in my area of Florida so if the lines are long, at least people won't be fainting from the heat.

Since I got to vote by mail-in in Oregon, I have no personal election day story to tell, so I'll live vicariously through all the stories on the blogs.

There are already reports at OurVoteLive of chaos in many states (MI,PA,OH,VA). Many reports (20 in VA alone) of voting machines malfunctioning before the polls were even opened to voters. Some polling places had not yet received ballots (Tallahassee, FL) and others were not even open (Virginia Beach, VA). Combine this with the reports coming in from around the country over the last few days of intentional misinformation and voter intimidation. Looks like we're going to have a long day, folks.

All this really makes me wonder if we've been underestimating the GOP ground game all this time. In other words, whereas we have all been cheering over the superiority of Obama's GOTV effort as compared to McCain's, it seems that the Republicans are now bringing out their ace in the hole: incompetence and malfeasance, at all levels of the electoral process. The Bush administration and local Republicans have been spending years spreading their knuckleheaded cronies like a cancer throughout our entire government. This has allowed them to the infamous Diebold voting machines, strike hundreds of thousands of eligible voters from roll calls, stonewall efforts for electoral reform and prosecution of voter intimidation... the list goes on and on.

So, in summary:

Democratic strategy: GET OUT THE VOTE
Republican strategy: THROW OUT THE VOTE

When I heard this on LK on CNN last night I was whooping it up.
They haven't voted for a Dem since 68 and last night Obama got 33% more votes than McCain. During the primaries, Democratic voters turned out almost 2-1 over Republicans to choose their candidate, I think and thought then that this would be a landslide that reflects those margins, look for Obama to keep and maintain a 2-1 margin especially in states that already lean blue.

People do adjust to reality when theres immediate consequences.

Obama wins and gets 71% of the vote! Now just keep that up all day!

No problem at all, they didn't bother to check my ID. I even took my passport along as a backup.

I must say, it was truly a proud moment voting for Barack Obama.

I walked out of there grinning, while my fellow red-staters looked a little frowny. Aww....

And let's do something about all the smears. I know they've been debunked, but still persist in my area. The people responsible for that garbage are ruining this country.

Let the reformation begin!

Man, I looked high and low for a youtube video of Killdozer and Alice Donut performing "Age of Aquarius" but found nothing.

Your video was kind of heavy, but poignant.

Peace.

I believe that is DIXFIELD Notch, not Dixville Notch. I live in Maine and have been there many times.

I live in Vermont and while I've never been to Dixville Notch that I recall I do know that that has been it's name at least for the 48 years I've been alive. It's what all maps and it's own residents call it anyway.

It is Dixville, but when I did a google, it is called Dixfield, too. Oh, well.

GOBAMA!!

Tonite...right wing heads EXPLODE.

It will be my pleasure to perform the cleanup on Aisle 3.

that will hold many Rethugs who want to hang themselves. Bring your own rope...

preferably.

Gibbets, its also green, helps feed the wildlife.
Person sized iron cage, open the door, pop them in (bound and gagged if dont like the screams and obscenities) and let nature and exposure do its thing.

The Grey Squirrels would love it.

btw a gibbet is an iron cage, you might have noticed them on Pirates of the Caribbean movies or similar.

This is of course after the war crimes and human rights abuses trials, and the legal death sentences of the courts.
If Republicans think its handy dandy to execute children and retarded people for a laugh, then lets put the worst of them on trial for the high crimes they have committed.

but there's always the bigger mahogany tree in the swale...

I only wish, but since they never blame themselves and have no shame tonight will be "the night of excuses" i.e. it was the economy...it was the liberal media...etc..

The rightwing has become totally and completely delusional and they are a foreboding danger.

It HAS to be election fraud! Because I find it VERY unlikely that 6 people in such an America loving town would have voted for a bank fraudster and his crazy lady running mate.

Yep. Must be that "gotcha" voting.

I just got back from voting in Cedar Rapids, IA. I voted Obama. I would have voted Kucinich had McCain picked anyone even slightly rational for the position of VP. Can you say Bible-Beating Bimbo five times fast?

I don't have to worry about the stress too much. I'll be at work designing yellowbook ads for both the sociopathic, the self-centered and the socialist opportunists in America until 11:15 pm.

And now, I'm going back to bed.

I just voted this morning; there was no line. It is so awesome to see neighbours and friends; everyone was smiling and hopeful. New Mexicans are really charged up for this election. Seeing OBAMA's name on the ballot brought a tear to my eye...I'm going to be soo emotional tonight.

Peace to you all---and get out and VOTE, if you haven't already.
