It wasn't just Karl Rove and the Bush White House crew that was freaking yesterday over President Obama's statement yesterday leaving the door open for prosecutions of the architects of Bush's torture regime -- indicating he'd leave the decision up to the Attorney General. (There was also growing speculation that AG Eric Holder might appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the matter.)

No, it seemed the entire Village was in an uproar. Especially over at Fox, where the dismay was universal. Especially funny on Fox's All Star Panel yesterday afternoon was Morton Kondracke, the Faux Designated Liberal, who blamed it all on MoveOn.org and the liberal bloggers.

Oh, and NBC and the New York Times, too.

Wait. Can we blame it on the French somehow too, while we're at it?

I think Fox Nooz is more akin to the Village Idiots, don't you?

The Village Of Village Idiots?

Nice one.

it takes a Village of Village Idiots to raise the children of those same village idiots.

)O(

Great clip, ysb!

)O(

I got into a heated debate with a film instructor who insisted all sci-fi horror of the 50's was Cold War themed.

I said that may've been true with Americans, but not necessarily the British.

And in either country, I said no, it was probably World War II themes. The look in the sky mantra for flying saucers originally came from Pearl Harbor.

And if one saw what looked like Cold War themes in sci-fi horror of the period, perhaps wartime experience shaped note only our movies but also our relations with those behind the Iron Curtain.

)O(

I should mention that for Britain the same theme could've come from the London Blitz.

'Five Million Years to Earth' comes to mind, where the image of Satan had manifested in London's East End when a subway tunneler disturbs an alien spacecraft, or the also classic 'Enemy from Space' wherein Quatermass's investigation of meteorites raining down on the English countryside leads to the discovery of an alien invasion?

)O(

I've wanted to, but they've never been available, although Netflicks might have them now.

Any history of Hammer Studios always mention their 1930's movie The Mystery of Marie Roget with Bela Lugosi as a deranged seaman, and of course adaptions of Quartermass, which was originally a radio show.

Other movies I can't seem to get my hands on is:

1910 Frankenstein With Charles Ogle, Life Without a Soul, a 1915 version of Frankenstein with Percy Standing, the German silent Homunculus, another German silent Der Golem (what we have now is it's sequel), the German silent Der Student Das Prague, the American silent Puritan Passions with Osgood Perkins (Anthony Perkins father), where it was a scarecrow brought to life, but proven more human when he sacrifices himself in the end, and of course Lon Chaney's London After Midnight, because all of these are lost except for 1910 Frankenstein, but it's in limited release.

That was a dumb move on somebody's part after it's rediscovery, becuase you can see it in it's entirity in two parts on Youtube.

I guess you can see I'm more of a horror fan than science fiction, and American television doesn't even show old movies anymore, and when it did it was parochial in it's choices.

I used to be disappointed when it was all that was on when I was little. Now I'd like to buy them. Maybe I'll see if the library has them and I can check them out.

I associate headaches with that production style for some reason, 50s stuff. It reminds me of being at grandma's on a saturday and watching some science fiction theater.

I preferred 30s, then 40s movies. Mostly for the gowns. And there aren't any gowns in Quatermass movies, unless it's fleeting.

)O(

Ditto.

Gowns and hairstyles of that period often seemed to be Greek revivalist to me.

Oh, and if you want to see a science fiction movie of the 30's with the wildest assortments of gowns and set designs from a variety of eras and periods, you ought to watch the first Flash Gordon serial with Buster Crabbe. They go from looking Asian, to Greek to Egyptian and somehow it all works.

The two sequels Flash Gordon Goes to Mars and Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe tend to be more mundane. In fact in the latter, everything looks like 12th century England (Robin Hood's era), except for the Evil Emperor Ming's Imperial Guard. They go from wearing something like medieval plate armor in the first serial to something more like late 17th to early 18th century British army in the last serial.

runs the Flash Gordon stuff. They do have some fabulous head gear in those serials.

)O(

I prefer the headlights.

Shouldn't they blame them for the prosecution. You don't blame a lawyer when a murderer or a thief gets prosecuted. You break the law you get prosecuted. What's with all the outrage?

It's just a lot of arm waving. That's what happens when you have nothing to offer.

Such as you mention at NBC and the NYT? I don't want to "somehow" overlook them.

Go back over the last eight years at all the crimes you overlooked, then get back to us.

Or not.

At my school--CCSU, a student Editor was fired from her job because she so-called expressed views which were not "ethical." The two faculty members who fired Marissa Blaszko cited the NY Times ethical standards used by the CCSU Recorder for her firing.

I am writing here to make both of you aware of this awful situation to a young and spirited student. Because I come here often, I felt you would be, possibly, at any rate, receptive to me posting this here. I do not have your email addresses, so, I am in a sense writing to you here. Thanks.

If anyone is interested in signing, after reading, the petition on behalf of Marissa Blaszko, please go to:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/reinstate-an...

I know this may be off-topic, but I wanted to make all aware of the targeting of a liberal, socially-conscious, antiwar student activist who is being penalized for her views and the fact that the paper bases its ethical code on the model of the NY Times.

Thanks so much to C&L, Dave, and John and all posters here....

Torture, War and the Imperial Project

The Fatal Thread

By CHRIS FLOYD

Here

excerpt:

You cannot disentangle the torture program from the war of aggression in Iraq – nor from the illegal wiretapping program, the corrupt war profiteering, and all the other degradations of liberty and law that have been so accelerated in the past eight years. They are all of a piece, part and parcel of a plan to expand and entrench America's "unipolar domination" of world affairs with a thoroughly militarized state led by an unaccountable, authoritarian "Unitary Executive."

This is one reason why Barack Obama is so obviously reluctant to tug on the torture thread too hard. If you tear it out, with full-scale prosecutions and top officials locked up behind bars, the whole rotten skein would fall apart. Once you start genuinely subjecting government officials – including security apparatchiks and military brass – to the full extent of the law, there would be no end to the unraveling: senators, contractors, representatives, bureaucrats, generals, lobbyists, judges, corporate chiefs – the whole edifice of Establishment power would be shaken to the core as its leading lights went down, one after the other.

To the edifice of the Establishment power of course include the Oligarchs at the top.

Obama is a placeholder in this entire scheme of affairs, he is a figurehead.

It is the 'ancien regime' nouveau, as Simon Johnson has it.

Will shrink it down but in the final judgement it is still a pile of shit.

Whoever wants to keep murder as a foreign policy is insane.

If you're going to examine what was gained from waterboarding, you have to look at the flip side - How many people were waterboarded that had NO significant information or tips? In this "full disclosure" I'd like to hear that little fact.

We should allow torture by isolation in a box filled with caterpillars.

The real question is: Would you slap someone to save the life of your Mother or child?

...it isn't torture. So says The Limbaugh. Can I get away with that? Have they been saved?

:D

)O(

I think your mother can be your child only in Kentucky.

)O(

Come to think of it I heard of a parent killing someone charged with their daughter's rape during the course of the trial, being charged with a crime and prosecuted.

)O(

Come to think of it further if you're defending yourself or family against an actual overt attack it's legal

But once you start attacking people because you THINK they might've did something to your family

Or

Because you think they MIGHT be planning to do something against your family, the law would no longer consider that defensive, and you'd be the one up on charges.

McClatchy reports that according to “a former senior U.S. intelligence official familiar with the interrogation issue,” former Vice-President Cheney and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld “demanded that intelligence agencies and interrogators find evidence of al Qaida-Iraq collaboration.” The reason they wanted to go to war with Iraq. A huge amount of people still believe that Al Qaeda and Saddam were one in the same.

what a surprise deMonize the left/Moveon.org for wanting the truth and consquences. i believe torture/"enhanced interrogation" was a strategy to piss people off to rationalize starting/ continuation of the war(s). these people on the right believe it's okay to do 'bad" behavior for the perceived ultimate good.

Turley: 'God help us' if torture only gets a '9/11 commission'

http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Turley_Torture_...

And in this clip again and again, they use the 9-11 excuse, when we don't know what really happenned and who was really responsible for 9-11!

I thought it was all Clinton's fault!

That is exactly what I was about to say. Thanks for saying it for me. :)

...it was actually The Clenis' fault. Conservatives have spent a lot time thinking about that Clenis. Still can't get it out of their heads, apparently. The Clenis drives them to distraction. The Clenis is the answer to everything. Even Bill is envious of his own Clenis and the sway it holds over republicans. Ahhh...that Clenis...

I'm sorry....what were we talking about?

leave memos. And he never invaded, but bombed from the air. Much more humanitarian.

i remember moving out west just prior to 9-11. i remember how i was in culture shock and how (r) were spitting blood when discussing that saddam had nukes and i was a lousy educated liberal because i did NOT buy it. to hear that the BUSH/rumsfeld/cheney were using torture to get a prisoners to say there was a relationship of saddam/al queda/9-11 does NOT surprise me. i personally, give obama and his people credit for letting some of this unravel. i would like to see prosecution but i have doubts on it happening. it's a real catch-22 for obama. with this country still at war the intelligence people are going to be heard.

"Wait. Can we blame it on the French somehow too, while we're at it?"

I asked some Frenchmen here that question and they said why not, you are going to do it anyway.

)O(

The crepe suzette defense?

All the Reslugs are sweating like the smelly corrupt pigs they are over being investigated again over illegal torture.

It's nice to see you again. I always enjoy your writings.

Your site was one of the first ones I found when I started visiting blogs a few years ago. It is always a pleasure to read.

Hope you are well.

Yes, it will take time

Morton Kondracke is supposed to be the liberal on that show? no way. seriously? I thought it was williams and the woman who were allegedly liberally inclined..

Never do rethuglicans accept responsibilty for their actions, failures or crimes. It is like watching an alcholic say they are not the problem, it is something else that makes them drink. FAUX is just as guilty as Cheney and Bush for their water carrying propaganda.

CMSM, Corporate "mainstream" media is trash. I watch it just to know what our monopolized state media is lying to us today. I'm glad they're freaking out, they deserve it all of them should fry in hell for defending death, destruction, and oh yeah torture too.

...I am histeric! I want their heads on a platter. I didn't get what I wanted, which is impeachment. Now, I want them all before court!

Yes. You bet, Mort, that's EXACTLY true. And I'm proud of it.

I had no idea!

Wow, it truly is an all star panel!

Welcome to Planet Wingnutta! Really Mort, this is the administration that leaked classified information to Judith Miller and then went on Meet the Press, and other shows, to tought the leaks in the NY Times as evidence supporting their intention to invade Iraq. Now even in the "small minds" at Fox News, don't you think if there was any evidence to support Cheney's claims the torture worked, we would have it released by now. After all, these are the same people who declassified documents to smear Valerie Plame (an undercover CIA operative, by the way a violation of law) and Joe Wilson. There was nothing these criminals wouldn't have declassified to help their cause.

But then again, I am talking about Feaux News! Where is Shephard Smith when you need him. He seems to be the only person on Fox with at least a minute ability to deal with "real" facts and some truth.

Kondrake appears with Fred Barnes on *The Beltway Boys,* and he comes of as a total wimp. He almost always sucks sucks up to Fred, who does his best to humiliate him when there is even a hint of disagreement. At such times, Kondrake backs off his position, finding some kind of wimpy, simpy words to "come around" to his daddy's hard-line neocon position.

Didn't I see the two of them in an airport recently with that Larry Craig guy? In my mind's eye, I can see Barnes with a whip and Kondrake spread eagled on an X-support, getting the lash from his top. Craig joins in for a three-way.
