August 29th - and then the water started rising.

Hurricane Katrina hit landfall on the morning of August 29th. For a while the reports sounded as though New Orleans dodged a bullet. But as the minutes went by and the eye passed, the full weight of the storm started to slowly be revealed. And each news report brought death totals higher, news of levee breaks, news of water rising.

The news clips start at six when the Hurricane hit land, and continue each hour into the evening as the story unfolded.
