Remember this? CNN must have thought EE was just joking around so they hired him. Hey, more power to him, but being an open racist is really too much. Isn't it?

Could this finally be Erick Erickson's 'firing offense' for CNN?

"Could this finally be Erick Erickson's 'firing offense' for CNN?"

Only if CNN can withstand being called ugly names from RW crazies.

Look how long they kept Lou Dobbs and Beck. I doubt Erickson is going away any time soon.

Depends on who holds the upper hand, I suppose. Do these folks dig up dirt on each other and use it like some sort of blackmail? Is there a better explanation if EE doesn't get fired?

You guys need to follow the media matters link. He is saying the republicans should use this new black panther (non) story like they used the Willie Horton ad way back when. To quote a bit from what Erickson wrote, "The Democrats will scream racism. Let them. Republicans are not going to pick up significant black support anyway."

they already know they've lost of the Black vote so they figure why not just go full throttle with the racism. There already going down that road with Latino's too. I guess they figure to hell with people of color and gays. I think they've put their full stock on the sraight white male vote.

It surely appears that way. Their tent must have been washed in hot water because it gets smaller every day.

I guess they take the statistics on the changing demographics of the voting public as seriously as they take the global warming statistics.

"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."

Your comment reminds me of an article I read earlier, it may not be that they choose to disregard, they may not be capable of adjustment in their beliefs:

How facts backfire (snippet)

New research, published in the journal Political Behavior last month, suggests that once those facts — or “facts” — are internalized, they are very difficult to budge. In 2005, amid the strident calls for better media fact-checking in the wake of the Iraq war, Michigan’s Nyhan and a colleague devised an experiment in which participants were given mock news stories, each of which contained a provably false, though nonetheless widespread, claim made by a political figure: that there were WMDs found in Iraq (there weren’t), that the Bush tax cuts increased government revenues (revenues actually fell), and that the Bush administration imposed a total ban on stem cell research (only certain federal funding was restricted). Nyhan inserted a clear, direct correction after each piece of misinformation, and then measured the study participants to see if the correction took.

For the most part, it didn’t. The participants who self-identified as conservative believed the misinformation on WMD and taxes even more strongly after being given the correction. With those two issues, the more strongly the participant cared about the topic — a factor known as salience — the stronger the backfire. The effect was slightly different on self-identified liberals: When they read corrected stories about stem cells, the corrections didn’t backfire, but the readers did still ignore the inconvenient fact that the Bush administration’s restrictions weren’t total.

How do you convince people that their beliefs are wrong, if they just dig in deeper when those beliefs are challenged? We are all guilty of filtering information through our personal experience and preconceived opinions.

I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all

In the case of both the demographics and global warming, eventually the stated facts will turn into reality.

It's why i've argued that the country has obviously not felt ENOUGH pain from the twisted policies of the right wing over the last 30 years.

People only believe what they want to believe until they get SLAPPED IN THE FACE by the facts.

So, let the GOP regain control. I hope SS IS destroyed, I hope unemployment is NEVER extended. I hope that gas goes to $5.

The Gulf spill, FEMA loans, poor response to emergencies. MORE MORE MORE. I want MORE.

Bring on the pain. It's the only way that ignorant people learn anything.

Just like Katrina wasn't enough to get folks to look at the problems down there in the Gulf, nor Rita after her and the flooding of the Texas City refineries. Now we have a situation that's so big, so scary, that people are forced to look at the problems inherent with the Gulf and its screwups.

Ron, knowing the facts only brings on abuse from the ignorant.

Thus, the attacks on "the intelligentsia" and "academia".

All of sudden...intelligence and education are treated like vices.

It's this whole "simplistic view of the world" that these morons live in. They can't deal with the complications of life. That's why this is all so ironic. These types of people are the types that wind up on government assistance. Government allows them to maintain a simple life. Yet, they are easily swayed by the constant media barragement of "government is bad", coupled with their own defense mechanism that they are not one of the deadbeats on government assistance that they rail against (you know...people NOT like them), they wind up supporting policies in direct conflict with their interests.

Another term used to identify fact-weilding realists. This was the basis for claiming that Obama had the "most liberal voting record in the senate."

There was a short sci-fi story called "Null-P", written by William Tenn. It was about the quest for mediocrity and finding the most average man. If you ever run across it, read it.

And Erickson is showing how stupid he is by assuming that only Black people get offended by racism againist Blacks. There are many Whites, Asians, Latinos, Gays, etc that are also offended by it as well.

Many devout Christian friends of mine are highly offended by racism, too. As someone noted above...the tent keeps shrinking.

is a party that chooses to not pursue the votes of one or more minorities considered "racist" by definition? Just a technical question on the definition of racism..

If I understand this douchebag's point correctly, he's saying that the GOP should no longer let their attempts to include minorities govern their behavior (in this case, the behavior is patently racist). I am all too aware that as a good liberal I'm expected to decry the Willie Horton ad as racist. Unfortunately, as The Great Non-Existent Being in the Sky who Loves Us so Much That He's Planning to Set the Vast Majority of us on Fire When we Die knows I tried, but the facts are just not there.

Horton was a vicious killer who was serving a sentence of life w/o parole. The Dukakis administration let him out on furlough as part of Horton's rehabilitation. That is, he was let out into the public on his own w/o any of the kind of supervision that might be expected for a convicted murderer and told to come back, say, Tuesday. This, for those of you grooving on how incredibly enlightened you are for hating the ad, was batshit crazy. Horton, living in a state w/o the death penalty and having almost nothing else to lose, did what just about anybody with half a brain would have predicted: He committed a violent crime. In this case, he raped a woman twice and tortured her boyfriend. Dukakis never expressed any sort of remorse.

It is true that the program was started by the previous Republican governor but Dukakis vetoed a bill that would have rescinded the program for convicted murderers. Willie Horton is his baby.

Willie Horton is a scary-looking black man. If he were a scary looking white man (say Nick Nolte on a bad day) it wouldn't make any difference. He was a violent sicko and letting him out of jail was a flagrantly insane thing to do. Dukakis's actions and inactions remain indefensible.

Yet our side's response is to run around painting Dukakis and, by inference, liberals in general as victims of racism.

What a bunch of pathetic bullshit.

It all has to do with representation.
Republicans represent 1% of our population.
That means most Republicans are being duped by the Republican Party.

If you trolls want something to get worked up about,
try thinking about the way Republicans use you, and use your racism.

We can quibble about the numbers but I'm substantially in agreement with this assertion. My question is what, if anything, does this have to do with my point?

If you trolls want something to get worked up about,
try thinking about the way Republicans use you, and use your racism..

As I mentioned before, I am a liberal. Honest, I am. I voted for Dukakis and everything. Last election I canvassed for Obama. If I'm some kind of Republican dupe, I'm certainly going about it the wrong way.

Now, about the term "troll": I am dissenting from the herd, something I am prone to do since I have the disagreeable habit of thinking for myself. A lot of people get angry at me for that. I'm happy to see that you don't suffer from the same problem.

They don't get angry because you have different ideas, they get annoyed because your ideas aren't germinated from a view encompassing the full picture.

And often the motives are all too obvious.

mausium, please explain to me why people shouldn't be horrified and offended that Dukakis let a convicted murder serving a life w/o parole sentence out of jail w/o supervision so he could pistol whip a guy, cut him up and rape his girlfriend two times. Exactly what is it in your opinion that makes this OK? Saying that my ideas "aren't germinated from a view encompasing the full picture," sounds like the sort of pretentious garbage that comes from an intellectual snot who knows he doesn't have a compelling argument but is too dishonest to admit that he's full of shit.

Trolls?

Thanks for being so up front about our little misunderstanding and cheers to you too.

mausium's picture

It's because you're poorly informed.

Watch Boogie Man, the Lee Atwater story.

Your understanding of the context of the controversy is limited.

Hieronymus Braintree's picture

Willie Horton was a murderer who Dukakis let free so he could rape and torture.

Lee Atwater was a major-league asshole. That doesn't change the basic facts of the case.

If you have an argument that shows why the context somehow alters the basic facts, make it. If you can't then stop telling me what an advanced understanding you have of these matters because, frankly, it makes you look like an arrogant, intellectually incoherent jackass.

Old Billy's picture

I believe Dukakis did express regret. He also signed the law ending the furlough program.

The fact is that there were white people who had committed violent crimes after walking away from furloughs. Atwater chose Horton because he was a scary-looking, black man.

I wouldn't call Dukakis a victim of racism. I'd just say that Republicans continue to exploit racism for gains in elections.

Agreed, and a distinction must be made between the Mass court’s extending the furlough program to 1st Degree Murder convicts, and the Lee Atwater campaign. Hardly anybody is familiar with the history of the program, but everybody knows Willie Horton.

There’s a reason for that.

Lee Atwater almost single-handedly invented the dog-whistle political campaign. His history demonstrates intentional use of subtle racism in advertising. He was proud of it. This is the quintessential example of his work.

Hieronymus Braintree's picture

Again, Willie Horton was a convicted murderer who was serving a life sentence w/o parole who was let out of jail because of this cockamaimie furlough program and who then, predictable went on the lam to commit further violent crimes. Make Horton white and Dukakis's actions are still totally indefensible. And as people keep pointing out, Horton wasn't alone.

And this stuff about the "distinction...between the Mass court's extending the furlough program to 1st Degree Murder convicts," as if it were the court's fault and not Dukakis's is flagrant bullshit. The following is from America's right turn: from Nixon to Clinton By William C. Berman.

Although the legislation that had made Horton’s furlough possible was passed during the administration of a Republican predecessor, Dukakis opposed all efforts to change it. In 1976 he vetoed…a bill that would have denied convicts such as Horton a pass that the current law still authorized.

http://books.google.com/books?id=IXR0lFwBJrUC...

Blaming Atwater for Horton is irresponsible nonsense. It's a horrible, terrible, very bad, no good story and Dukakis has no one to blame but himself.

And, as Taarak shows, our side is still letting itself get played.

Once again, there are two distinct issues here. One being the furlough program and how that led to a murderer being released to murder again - and the other how Atwater created a racially charged political campaign. The two stories share a common criminal, but they are separate issues. I don't conflate the two.

Hieronymus Braintree's picture

If you don't "conflate" the two, I don't think you're being very bright. W/o the heinous crimes and Dukakis's stupidity, both Willie Horton and his race are non-issues. He's just be an ugly black guy of no consequence rotting the rest of his life away in jail like he is now. It was Dukakis who made him matter. Atwater just took advantage what Dukakis gave him.

Blaming this all on Atwater and pretending the other stuff like rape and murder is of no or trivial consequence is political stupidity as pure, plain and simple as it gets.

You'd obviously have a great place in the Tea Party.

Hieronymus Braintree's picture

I believe Dukakis did express regret. He also signed the law ending the furlough program.

Oh well, since you "believe" Dukakis expressed regret, then I guess it must be true. That's all the proof I need. Also, signing the law ending the furlough program after disaster strikes isn't exactly a feather in his cap. It would have been a lot better if he had signed it before, say in 1976 when he vetoed the first attempt to outlaw furloughs.

Willie Horton was, and may still be, a scary-looking black man. This makes sense since he is both a murderer, a rapist and a torturer. I would hope he looks scary.

It is true that Atwater could have picked a white man but, really, is saying that Dukakis let white men out of jail who went out to commit needless, heinous crimes against other citizens for equally ill-conceived reasons your idea of a defense? Gee, I wonder where we liberals get this reputation for being out-of-touch elitist who don't care about crime victims. Must be the victims of a right-wing smear campaign.

Innocent people are hideously and needlessly victimized. Race had nothing to do with that. I'll allow that the ad may have been somewhat more effective because of race but only somewhat. Letting vicious criminals out of jail to attack innocent citizens was the real problem. Race was decidedly secondary. Our side keeps pretending that it was the other way around so we can slap ourselves on the back for being so endlessly enlightened and unprejudiced.

You are equating condemning Atwater with defending Horton. No one is defending Horton.

Hieronymus Braintree's picture

No, that's right. No one is defending Horton. But you seem to be far more interested in crying racism than in the fact that innocent people were needlessly victimized.

Now, you'll please excuse me. I have chores to do.

I agree with you that the program was insane, and that Dukakis shouldn't have vetoed the bill rescinding it, but the reason Atwater chose Horton was specifically because he was black. He didn't use a scary white man who did the same things as Horton.

Atwater was well known for his race-baiting ads to whip up the racists to vote for his candidates. This was one of those.

Hieronymus Braintree's picture

I agree with you that the program was insane, and that Dukakis shouldn't have vetoed the bill rescinding it, but the reason Atwater chose Horton was specifically because he was black.

A black who was a murderer serving a lifetime sentence w/o parole who was then let out on unsupervised furlough and who then raped a woman twice while torturing her boyfriend.

See? It's all about race!

Us liberals are such enlightened idiots.

bmw 528's picture

Nice try, but here is the real subject being discussed here:

"Atwater was well known for his race-baiting ads to whip up the racists to vote for his candidates. This was one of those."

As for this:

"Us liberals are such enlightened idiots."

Speak for yourself.

"We will find fulfillment not in the goods that we have, but in the good we can do for each other."

Robert F. Kennedy

...is that they aren't seeing the timeline correctly. The furlough program had already produced disasters like Willy Horton before the commercial was even planned. So they get together photos of all the bastards, and then ask each other "which one of these do we use for maximum impact?" "Oh hell, look at this scary black guy!" That's where the racism, or at the minimum, exploitation of racism, comes in.

But we all can see dear Erick's racism, right?
