New C&L Flash Player! The Daily Show: Full Metal Budget and Lieberman wants his laser planes
By John Amato Thursday Apr 09, 2009 2:00pm
(h/t Heather for the video)
Jon Stewart reminds us that comedy is not dead. Robert Gates, the SOD told the world that he's recommending a cut in military defense spending. In his defense Budget we now are fighting three different kinds of wars:
50% was for conventional wars
40% all types of wars
10% for irregular wars
Say, what? Then Gates outlines some of those beyond the future type military weapons that will be cut because they just plain suck.
Gates: We will cancel the second airborne laser prototype aircraft.
Stewart: Noooo. not the laser plane. You're cutting the laser plane? That's my favorite ridiculously expensive yet comically looking plane. Give me one good reason why we're losing that?
Gates: The program has significant affordability and technology problems and the program's operational was highly questionable.
Stewart: It's an expensive useless piece of sh&t. I guess you'd have to be a total jackass to be upset about losing laser planes.
Lieberman: Secretary Gates is specifically recommending the termination of a program of development called the airborne laser, this is a really important program we're developing which gives us the unique capacity to hit missile in its boost phase before it even gets its normal arc.
Stewart: Please don't take away my laser plane.
(Here's our new C&L flash player. We're slowly integrating a few more changes. After a few weeks we'll be making them all embeddable.)
(UPDATE: A major hat tip to Bob Cesca for the wicked graphic design on the player)

that little bald creeping nixon head in the player timeline is priceless !!!
Way cool, C&L!
I love the Nixon bald head too...I've been working on this day..
Job well done, sir!
:)
Very cool.
Tomorrow is my birthday and I feel like you guys here at C&L just gave me a present. Now I will be able to watch the videos here even when they don't have a youtube link. Thank you so much!
I saw this, this morning and the part about Lieberman was funny as hell. It was all good, but I just loved that part. Jon did him perfectly!
Thank gawd we have Jon Stewart! The whole segment was great.
Have a Happy B'day tomorrow, po'd patricia!
Happy birthday in advance!
Happy Birthday, Patricia! I just turned 50 2 weeks ago, and am eager to assert my DIVINE RIGHT to 10% off as a "senior" citizen.
And I can't wait to yell at kids to get off my lawn.......
All you guys are so sweet. Thank you, Calgarylady, Batocchio and Sierra Matt. I just love my cyber buddies so much. Now I'm off to have a birthday eve's cocktail and prepare to kiss another year good-bye.
Obama just cut Joe off from his trough! Slick! Joe must have thought he got the last laugh.
the C&L cartoon guy sticking up into the play window is a little bit distracting. Either make him smaller or just remove him. Other than that, it works well, and I really like the full screen option.
find a full screen option. I clicked on it and just another page came up.
I hope you plan to use this player instead of that wretched comedy central piece of junk one.
We'll be able to embed C&L videos? That would be pretty cool. I assume they would have a passthrough link to C&L, as would be only fair, not that traffic or hits have been a problem... ;-)
I also think the crook head's awesome.
coming in a few weeks and if all goes well with the player, C&Lers will be able to upload video to their posts...
Sounds cool, thanks. I hope bandwidth and hosting fees won't be a problem, but there's always another fundraiser.
Love the new imbedded player. Congrats!
I must be doing something wrong because the player doesn't work for me.
Woots, I love the idea of a common player (without Geocoding!). However, on my system (Firefox 3.0.8 on Ubuntu 8.10), the video never starts. :(
Digi
It would be better to have an option to choose to view Flash 9 or 10 versions. Also Adobe and Microsoft are having a battle between Flash and Silverlight.
Like in Real Genius with Val Kilmer?
That would be so cool. You know that Droopy wanted one of those so he could blow-up a big ball of unpopped popcorn in Al Gore's house.
it turns out one of the most interested parties in that flying POs? Taddaaaaah: Israel, who would benefit immensely from a flying platform capable of shooting down any possible missile their neighbors may be able to loop their way.
I always thought the perennial accusations of Lieberman being an Israeli 5th columnist were not serious. But now after seeing the pattern I am having some doubts.
Thing is, Israel is not interested (or capable) in footing the bill for such a canard project. I have friends who worked for Raytheon developing a similar system in the 90s, basically they came to the conclusion that it just does not work... as it did not work when it was called "Star Wars" in the 80s. It is a money pit, which the defense contractors love.
that I see that connection. The laser plane is designed to knock down missiles in their launch phase. That means it would pretty much have to be flying in the airspace of whatever country was launching the missile at the moment it was launched. As a large aircraft with a monstrous radar cross-section it would be a sitting duck. I'll give the Israeli defense ministry more credit than that. Only an idiot would have wasted a nickel on this concept and the Israelis aren't idiots.
.
I never claimed the Israeli military were idiots, au contrarie: they are getting the Americans to do all the development and footing the bill.
One of the biggest priorities for the IAF is the ability to neutralize missile threats.
there are very limited physical options. You can launch a preemptive attack (as in the Bekahh Valley). You can knock out the missile on launch (the unworkable POS under discussion). You can use a space based system to knock out the missile at apogee if it goes high enough (no one has one of those) or you can intercept on the terminal flight phase with an ABM. No one has an effective ABM system either. It is also a POS. If they tried to use a laser based system over Israel the missile would be beyond the capability of the weapon. I'm pretty sure I know the preferred method of the Israelis for dealing with missile threats.
...I'm not crazy about the slider for the video position. The little face is cute, but too wide to know where you're actually pointing. Just use an actual pointer for that part, and the rest is fine.
And much better than the previous solution!
but we'll make changes as we move forward.
neat new flash player John. Is this a beta test or is it in full action now? Really nice.
Did somebody release critical information on those presidential helicopters on a p2p network? or is that a conspiracy too? :P
Sold to many countries including Iran, so it was a red herring story to drum up business for a 'two men and a dog' security company with a certain Gen. Wesley Clark (ret) as a consultant.
Also publicity to try and sell the US gov some fancy new Marine One helicopters.
Is it in the budget? ;-)
But "this will be the last supplemental for Iraq and Afghanistan," he promised
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Obama_seeks_83....
The last this year... perhaps.
How fools we are, that believe that it is more important for US to spend almost a trillion dollars in WARS (Including) in Afganistan and Iraq rather than here!
Now, unlike the laser plane, the new Flash has an awesomely lethal quality about it. Thanks Jon, your LIEberman is spot on
When a friendly show site like comedy central allows their content to be embedded with their player why not do just that so they can benefit from the sponsorship generated from their hard work?
Using the C&L logo and advertising the c&L/video cafe site on this video IMO is trying to take credit for someone else's hard work.
If you plan on making video embedding available you should only do it for your own work.
Just my opinion
I like the player BECAUSE it's not the Comedy Central player. As someone mentioned above, anything that's geotargeted (like Comedy Central or Hulu clips) will ONLY play in the US, which means that those of us in Canada won't be able to see the clips at all. I know it's not the end of the world but for a blog with an international audience, using embeds that only work in one part of the world is a bit frustrating.
Instead of placing the website address for C&L or video cafe at the end they should give the address of comedy central.
I'm all for fair usage to discuss etc. My point however is about giving credit to those for which it is due instead of leeching off of the hard work of others.
I love sites like this. John Amato works hard to brings our attention to a lot of things, but this video is up and it gives a H/T to Heather for the video, a link to Bob Cesca's blog and the tags for the The Daily Show/Jon Stewart link to another C&L post. I cannot see any link to comedy central.
Against a bunch of ragged Somali pirates in a wooden boat and armed with a few AK's
I'm using Firefox 3.0.8 and, after clicking Quicktime Play, the sound works for about a minute then drops out, never to return.

Those of us plagued with crummy (read: slower than molasses) internet access cannot "stream" anything. Dribble is more like it.
Loves the player! Hope it's embeddable soon. I will use them in my little blog 'cause you have the goods here.
Personally, I think Lieberman is waiting for his turn at the teabaggin'.
