NY-20's tied election is a Huge win for President Obama
By John Amato Wednesday Apr 01, 2009 4:30amWhat the results of the "too close to call" election in NY-20 tells us is that it's a huge win for President Obama and another repudiation of Republicans in Congress. With a 70,000 voter advantage and Republicans spending almost double in Tedisco's district, the fact that Murphy leads by under a hundred votes is pretty amazing. Nobody I talked to thought there was a remote chance that Murphy had a shot at this.
Tedisco gave up over a 20-point lead faster then Usain Bolt ran the 100-yard dash in the Olympics. So just how unpopular is the Republican party?
The DCCC's Chris Van Hollen said it best:
"From 21 points down to securing a majority of the vote tonight, congratulations to Scott Murphy who ran an extraordinary campaign focused on his record as a successful businessman who helped to create jobs and his strong support for President Obama's economic recovery act. As votes continue to be counted, we're confident that Scott Murphy will expand his lead.
"Scott Murphy's strong showing in this district where Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than 70,000 represents a rejection of the obstructionist agenda and scare tactics that have become the hallmark of House Republicans."
Free Republic readers are freaking out.

Why did we not win this seat easily.Because half the voters are stupid enough to vote for the Democrat.
That would be a lot of stupid Republican voters...

I don't know a thing about this election but if a dem can win it, that's good by me.
Today is also the day the repubs show us their April Fool's budget plan.
I certainly hope this isn't an AFD joke.
I must admit ignorance however to Tedisco's voting record.
Tedisco blatantly said he is against the stimulus - and mouthed Repug party line this election...
He sure didn't get my vote --
I am glad to be one of the 56... let's hope the 4K absentee ballots don't ruin this.
Whether we agree with Obama's methods or not, he is winning over Americans because he's at least trying to do something, anything to solve the Nation's financial problems.
The Republicans actually think doing nothing(besides tax cuts and less government. Blah, blah, fucking blah) will suceed.
The republicans are now the party of "No" and the party of "I don't know"
Maybe I'm wrong but wasn't this election in NY one of the first tests for Michael Steele. If so, how's that working out for him?
My little dog has a stuffed elephant toy. He is busy right now chewing its truck off. I can't help but feel he's making a political statement.
More likely "I don't recall" and "I apologize if some people took offense at (fill in the blank)..."
They only say those things when they get caught.
Roam free, little pachyderm...
Click on the Free Repulic link in the story and read what the repubs are writting about this election. You'll find a mélange of conspiracy theorists, gasping fatalists, and maybe one realist. In toto, the posts remind me of dog trying to catch its tail. Of course, in the case of the FR posters the dog is boxer!!!

Here's a gem from about halfway down the first page:
"I think Acorn and the Dems are just doing a great job of getting out the college kiddie votes (those people who never should have been given the vote in the first place - thank you Dickie Nixon)"
Ahh yes, Tricky Dick, Democratic lover of youth...
"wonder who came up with Pat Boone for the last minute calls for Tedisco....while the Dims had Barry/Joe"

Pat Boone? WTF?
What, Limpballs wanted too much money?
Waahhh...
Pat Boone? I didn't even realize that he was still alive. Jeez, talk about going back in time.

I have a feeling there is a Pat Boone video at the end of that link and I'm not going there. Oh noez I'm not.
Just heard that the justice dept. has dropped all charges against Ted Stevens. I hope the justice dept. is playing an April Fools joke on us, but I'm afraid it's not.
Just heard on CNN too. But then again, CNN is a joke 365 days a year...
It said in on Yahoo news too.
Yeah, NPR's been reporting it all morning.
Seems the Bush justice department withheld evidence from the defense during the trial, even after the judge ordered them to provide it.
Limpballs always wants more money....now he's threatening to move from New York, sell his properties in NY, and perhaps move to Texas, a no income tax state....after hearing about a proposed plan to have higher tax rates for those making over $500,000. Waaahhhhhhhhhh is right!

Florida might gain a couple of feet of elevation to protect against rising sea levels if his tonnage is gone.
they could plug his Jabba-sized ass into the border fence. That alone could save the country several thousand dollars in construction costs, plus help keep out any illegals who aren't adept in mountain climbing.

...life being that ignorant? Paranoia and criminal stupidity are a lethal combination.
Are you saying that I'm dumb for not knowing that Pat Boone was still alive? I might be uninformed, but I'm not dumb......I don't think.
I thought not thinking was what made people dumb
Or not speaking...
I think under either consideration republicans testifying would qualify.
That site is an orgy of disinformation, slander and absolute lies for trolls before they invade progressive sites.

I saw that, too, and thought, "That's right! I forgot how much Nixon loved the youth on college campuses that he gave them the vote."
Talk about grasping at straws.......

But on the plus side we're allowed to drink but not vote.
I find it generally easier to have a few drinks before voting.
won't let them vote on...
But voting is pretty much symbolic. The real choices get made waaay before any ballot gets cast...
also won another special election on Long Island for a town supervisor race -- the newcomer vs. the GOP vet.
There is always a lot of nonsensical spin strewn around elections, especially special elections. This may be a minor symbolic "win" for Obama, but it seems more of a rejection of something (the insane and incompetent GOP) and less an affirmation of anything. After all, isn't Murphy headed for Blue Doggery if he wins? That's no win for Obama, since the Blue Dogs seem to look for ways to undermine the few liberal tendencies Obama has (and they are precious few). Blue Dogs help to make the Democratic Party weak and ineffectual, incapable of standing up to Republicans, and unable to form a coherent progressive or even consistently liberal agenda.
This election is more bad news for Republicans and the country. It means that we have a dysfunctional party in the majority and a completely insane party in opposition. That's not good news for anyone. I don't know what I would have done if I lived in NY-20, but I seriously doubt I would have voted for Murphy. At this point, I will never vote for any Republican I can imagine running for elective office in this country. But neither will I vote for anyone who is remotely likely to side with the Evan Bayhs, Harold Fords, and others of their ilk. One more Republican in the House does less damage to the things I believe in than does one more Blue Dog. As long as Democrats have a significant majority in the House that will remain true.
I'm resigned to being in a permanent minority in this country -- that would be the minority that wants universal single payer health care, choice, equal rights for all regardless of sexual orientation, a non-hegemonic foreign policy, strong labor, and a well-regulated economy that doesn't privatize profits and socialize losses. And I'm not going to help send any right-wing Democrats to government at any level.
Note: I've not had the time to follow this election closely, nor am I familiar enough with Murphy to say that there was no possibility I would have voted for him. If he's truly a likely Blue Dog, I wouldn't have.

This is the consequence of foisting the village idiot on us and then telling us he was a genius, a man of vision. And now, their defense is that Bush wasn't conservative enough.
In other words, everything Bush did, conservatives would do more of.
And then they seem puzzled as to why voters are running away screaming.
It'd be like going to a five-star restaurant and being served an absolutely shitty meal. Certainly, you'd think long and hard before going back to that restaurant; but if the chef told you the flavors simply weren't strong enough, or that your palate was uneducated, you'd run away.

I see a prolonged Republican court battle coming. Republicans can't take a close defeat like a man.
...the Democrats win and the Republicans are so virtuous they simply can't accept defeat at the hands of the world's greatest force for evil.

But it's a bit early in the morning to see John Cleese in drag!
Obama's actions since the crisis, especially threatening unions, is a betrayal of that message...He's not a guy to lead a strike. He'd give up too soon...
Cesar Chavez would be spinning in his grave
Look at those comments...."another stolen election"; "ACORN's work"; "too many immigrants in this part of New York"; "more shenanigans".
What about Bush v. Gore?
These freepers are nothing but crybabies (and liars and haters and dumbasses and asswipes and asshats.....)
... when it was Bush v. Gore, all we heard from the freeper/neocons was that it was impossible to steal an election, that we should just STFU, and the head of Diebold told us, "I don't think these evil election-stealing people exist."
"Too many immigrants in this part of New York"; "more shenanigans."
They're still pissed-off about the Irish?
its the Wops.
Ahhhhhhhh... Ohhhhhhhhhh my goooooooooooood..... Ohhhhhhh jeeeez. Ahhhhhhhhhhh... oooooooooooo... Jeez I clicked the link and went to the Freeeper site. Oh god. Did somebody bring the disinfectant? My computer is ruined.
I think the Conficker worm came from that Freeper site!
"Because half the voters are stupid enough to vote for the Democrat."
I would argue the other half was stupid enough to vote to make Rush Limbaugh's tax cut permanent while their jobs are vanishing and their housing values and 401k's are falling through the floor.
"Why did we not win this seat easily?"
ummmmmmmm because Americans reject Nazism and Feudalism??? And that's all the Republican party offers these days.
Wow, you go through that list and all I see anyway is a bunch of unhinged conspiracy theorists.. I'm so glad I'm not one of those poor, pathetic people! They're channeling Michele Bachman, Malkin and Newt Gingrich simultaneously! Yikes!
Kinky...
Interesting to note: I signed up at the Freeper's site this AM, just to voice my opinion. I'm allowed to do that, right? WRONG!!! I entered one fairly inocuous post, questioning someone's comment that this looked like "another stolen election". I was A) immediately blasted from here to holy heck, and B) banned from further posting. I also got a nice nasty-gram, to which I could not respond.
Reminds me of the old Nathan's commercials: "When I want your opinion, I'll give it to you".
What was your post?
I was looking for your post at Freeper's, but looks like the moderator-Natzi beat me to it.
I had three comments, origonally posted, then pulled. Honestly, I was on my best behavior and did no name calling or profanity of any kind.
Just provided facts and a dissenting opinion. That kind of shit just does not fly over there.
"See what happens when we don’t shout out our conservative values."
They'll get their ass kicked over and over again and will never figure out that their "conservative values" are the reason they lose elections. Americans have see these values and rejected them.
um....o.k....looks more like a loss for Obama. Recently elected, still in honeymoon stage, and STILL Dems don't score a landslide victory? This Repuke should have been blown out of the water.
In your world, everything can be interpreted as a loss for Obama. You regularly come with a cup of piss offering for all to drink. You and another guy(Tyree) just can't bring yourself to say anything positive concerning the President...Hannity has the same difficulty.
a victory? Explain that. He's been in power long enough that people see his policies. He's still in the honeymoon and this? Seriously, if the guy took a dump on your head, you'd say thank you that is so much better than when Georgie did it. You really need to actually listen/read what is going on, instead of being in that same category as Bushie supporters. You are about as "left" as Rush Limpballs is "right". Both so partisan, you can't see your nose despite your face.
...in a Republican district. Sounds like somebody lost big...and it certainly wasn't Obama.
I run into quite a few politicians while community working here in Chicago, and this I know...if a politician cannot deliver votes in his district, his own party will dump his ass! This clown Tedisco lost.
I know that NY is a very blue state, but this particular district, has 70,000 more registered Republicans than Democrats. Two weeks ago Tedisco (R) had a 20 point lead. The fact that this is so close does nothing to indicate the GOP has turned things around nor is it any indication of a public going against the President.
"The district is steadily turning Dem, they move from the places Dems have ruined to enjoy the relatively better areas...then are ruining them as well."
Actually, of course, if 'Dems' are moving into their sanctuary, and I have no idea, it's because the victims have moved to where the victimizers live which is reason for the victimizers to move further out or better yet offshore.. but their victims just won't hold still! what's wrong with victims today?
The main comment I heard was: "you lost. GET OVER IT"
Hey you guys....Coleman lost - GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
but they aren't listening.
Correction: "Gore won, GET OVER IT"
You better believe the anti-democratic Rushthugliklans are going to try to steal Franken's seat and Murphy's seat just as they stole the election from Gore. Those 5 conservative activist judges on the Supreme Court should have been impeached, tarred and feathered for damage they did to this country for installing Bush dictator.
half the voters aren't stupidm but are instead finally wise-ing up?
OK, I'm now baned from the site, anyone else want to give it a go.
Be careful, this is not an open forum for discussing GOP issues.
It is a web-site for those that agree with everything that the NR stands for. No room for dissent here. Just like the GOP.
Oh well, more elections for us, as long as they fear open debate.
And I really behaved myself, too.
Donate to help keep the party of "Katherine Harris and The Supremes" from stealing another one http://www.thealbanyproject.com/diary/6182/ny...
This time we'll be ready for the Rushthugliklans.
Check this out. A Freeper is calling rethugs "stupid".

Why did we not win this seat easily.
Because half the voters are stupid enough to vote for the Democrat.
Is there no end to the blind stupidity of Freepers?
Here, guy. Here's a gun. Shoot yourself in the foot if it makes you feel better. Go ahead.
Why is it that the New York State Board of Elections, AP, Fox News, and ABC News is predicting a win for James N. Tedisco?
It is so simple, and yet the majority of those posting here know the answer, and are trying to hide it.
The majority of absentee votes that are yet to be counted are from American Service men and women, and everyone here knows that the majority of them will vote for James N. Tedisco.
It is the same thing that happen when The Honorable George Bush won against Al Gore. The Democrats did everything in their power to prevent the absentee votes from American Service men and women from being counted. There is a video in which a Democrat Leader called our American Service men and women tax cheats for registering to vote in Florida. Complain, slander me, and scream from now until the end of time I am wrong, but you will never rid the Internet of every copy of the video I mentioned, and other related facts.
I am so sure that this post will be removed that I am posting this on an estimated 120 other web sites with a link to this sight so that others can read how the majority of the post here deny facts.
BTW at this writing, there is an estimated 320,000 American Citizens signing petitions against Obama, that is 10 percent of the total population of the United States. Think about it, Obama has been in office less that three months and 10 percent of the population is signing petitions against him. Imagine how many there will be on those petitions in 6 months?
....in a Congressional district that has 70,000 more registered Republicans than Democrats, the Republican candidate trails in the vote from the polling places? Shouldn't Tedisco be winning by roughly 70,000 votes? Even if Tedisco wins that seat after the absentee ballots are counted, it's a moral victory for the Democrat, Murphy, who trailed by 20% when the campaign to represent this heavily Republican district in up-state New York began.
...you can't do the math correctly? In a country of 300 million, 320 thousand is just over one tenth of one percent. And what in the hell are those petitons about, anyway? If you think you can recall the President of the United States of America, you'd better read the Constitution (and please go find your own copy- the people at the National Archives are busy enough without having to clean your frothy spittle off of the case that protects the original document).
...you think it was the Democrats who wanted to stop counting votes in Florida in 2000? It was Bush and his Brooks Brothers buddies who got the recount quashed by the Supreme Court of the United States.
...you would link to this site with which you so obviously disagree, to 120 other sites? Thanks for the hits! John Amato's traffic will go up- and so will the advertising rates he can charge!
Thanks Andy K, you see the guys here in the press room bet on how you would reply. I came the closet, so I won the pool. I even bet that you would say something about the math, God I love you guys. I keep this up and I can retire. I wonder if it helps I have a BA in Political Science, and History, naw, I could show you my degree, and you would swear to your dying breath it was forged, so why try. Oh and by the way, there is a way to show the world your post without linking to it. Try pressing the print screen key on your keyboard sometime. And thanks again for the $ 50.00
Geeezzz you an asshat.
Press room? yeah right. And what pres room would that be? Sesame Street Gazette?
Nice try asshat. All you succeeded in doing was prove how ignorant you are.
Now, repeat after me, The population of the United States is.......?
C'mon, you can do it.
Oh, since you have those qualifications, try going back and doing some more in basic arithmetic. You know, fractions?
I'll bet your co workers knew you'd make an ass of yourself. So they all figured it was worth it.
They were right.
