Go Home

I just turned on CSPAN 3 and Chuck Schumer is speaking and wondering why Republicans are soo afraid of a public option and is talking about his amendment. He said he actually liked Sen. Rockefeller's amendment better, but he's pushing his amendment. He should be scolding members of his own party for voting against the public option.

Here are the five ConservaDems who voted against the public option earlier:

Baucus, Conrad, Lincoln, Carper and Nelson.

Another vote is due shortly. We will not stay silent. The House of Lords are more interested in their own power than helping the American people.

It looks like Ben Nelson is voting for Schumer's amendment.

UPDATE:

The more conservative Chuck Schumer public option amendment was just voted down 13-10.

Two votes flipped, Nelson and Carper, but Baucus, Lincoln and Conrad voted against it. Good doggies.

Whats the point of electing democrats to Senate when they're closet republicans?
All of them should face primary challenges over this.

There's clearly no point here in AR with Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor. I'll have absolutely no qualms voting for a green candidate next November when Blanche is up. If she loses to a republican, so be it.

ThunderMonkey's picture

I got a letter from Boozman yesterday saying that he's voting against the public option because it harms small businesses.

I still have no clue where he was getting his numbers from.

Baucus, Conrad, Lincoln, Carper or Nelson?

You want better- progressive- Democrats, support them in the primaries.

These five come from small assbackwards states that suck out federal assistance big time...and then whine about budgets, self responsibility and of course...religion.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

Florida isn't small in any way. I'm not so sure that Delaware- Carper's state- is so backwards, either, but they are the official home to a disproportionate number of corporations.

Not that he is any great shakes, but Florida has BILL Nelson, Nebraska has BEN Nelson.

Forgot we were talking about that Nelson.

I withdraw my subtle insult of The Sunshine State, but I reserve my right to use it again the next time they taser an inmate on his way to Old Sparky.

Old Billy's picture

Uhm, John's got it wrong. It is Bill Nelson (R*-FL). And at least Carper and Nelson voted for Schumer's version of the public option.

Lincoln deserves a swift kick in the ass after misleading everyone about how she would vote on this. She said as late as last week that she supported the public option.

Carper is nothing but a tool for the corporations in Delaware. Namely Astra Zeneca when it comes to this one. Now it is the banks, DuPont, Gore, and Astra Zeneca. he is shameless and will get re elected.

delawareliberal.net

The first state to take advantage of the corporation as person fallacy. Well, I realize that SCOTUS thinks it is a fact, but that doesn't make it true.

You are correct. It is not enough to just not vote for them the next election. You have to actively campaign against them by support challengers in primaries. Turn the anger and resentment towards these Democrats into a positive while teaching them a lesson at the same time.

Shumer already said they wanted this vote to show who was with them and who wasn't. More game playing, but it was effective.

They finally agreed that Blue Rats will get their approval, and, needless to say, cats approved of that name, also. Rats themselves? Not so much. They want to make it official. As long as this is the way things run, your 'democracy' is nothing more than an illusion.

The fact that a vast majority of Americans want some form of universal healthcare, and you still can't get it done, is pretty clear evidence who is running the show. Can you guess who that is?

I mean all over the country. Also, strikes and sit-ins. They are now trying to force people to take flu shots, even though they are toxic? And if someone in a situation that is deemed by public officials as an emergency won't take the shots, they can be imprisoned and forced to have them. WTF? Mandatory insurance and mandatory vaccinations? Oh, I almost forgot. Bush granted vaccine manufacturers immunity from law suits (in 2004 or 2005) if people die or get sick from the vaccines that will never be thoroughly tested until several million people are vaccinated. Mandatory testing of untested products for Big Pharma. Nice!

Lets all be sure to write down each of their names so that we can donate to their primary challenger. These whores are going to pay. I still think we'll be able to get a public option.(See Senator Harkin's comments over on thinkprogress) but, we still need to punish every fake ass Democrat and get rid of their stupid asses!

I am doing just that. We need to get rid of those representatives/senators who do what's in the insurance companies' best interests, not ours. Better yet, let's work to establish a third party; I have lost all faith in most of our Democratic representatives in DC.

... there are 2 kinds of yellow labs, the American which tends to be hyperactive and a PITA to train sometimes, and the original European branch which is mellow and quite intelligent. The American lab is also bigger and stronger which adds to their training challenges in some cases, due to their hyperactivity.

Now that I think of it, they sort of mimic their human counterparts in some respects ;-)

toiboi's picture

labs are the dogs of choice for 'guide dogs for the blind' (altho goldens and german shepherds also are trained.) intelligent, trustworthy and up for the challenge. our two yellow labs were noble of heart and loving family members. my moniker -toiboi - is in honor of my belated/beloved yellow lab--a strong, handsome, big-hearted lad, who along with his late sister stole and broke my heart.

intelligent, energetic pups and dogs do well with people of similar attributes or those at least as smart as the canines in question--and/or devoted enough to teach them good manners and provide for their needs.

Google this. It is a fact! They have a huge conflict of interest with real people: They have a legal imperative to take as much money as possible from as many people as possible. They are not done yet. Wait until they have absolutely free reign to spend unlimited amounts of money on politicians, who in turn will make laws that allow the corporations to do anything they want with the government acting as their personal SS. I do not mean Secret service. I mean SS in the Nazi Germany sense Schutzstaffel ("Protective Squadron"). This is getting extremely ugly.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Several weeks ago Rep. Anthony Weiner attempted to bring an amendment to committee on H.R. 3200. The Amendment was H.R. 676, Medicare for All. Right before the vote was to have taken place Speaker Pelosi asked Chairman Waxman to ask Rep. Weiner if he would WITHDRAW his amendment IF she allowed a full House debate/vote on H.R. 676. Rep. Weiner gladly said, "Yes".

For those of you who would like to follow the schedule of when this historic debate/vote will take place, go to:

majority leader.house.gov

Then click on "Floor resources"

Then click on "Weekly Leader".

Every Friday afternoon the schedule for the House of Representatives is posted here for the next week.

This way we can all keep track of when this debate/vote will be happening...AS PELOSI PROMISED.

We may never have a Single Payer health system in this country, but after all the crap the committees are voting on this week and in coming weeks I think it will be refreshing to finally get to hear arguments in favor of the ONLY system that would be FAIR, affordable and would deliver quality health care to ALL Americans without the for-profit health insurance corporations being involved.

The Rockefeller amendment allowed for a public option whose rates and reimbursement are the same as Medicare. The Schumer amendment would have a seperate board to set the rates and reimbursements. Both would only allow uninsured people to select the public option. The Wyden amendment (no action yet) would open up either to all of us (among other things). So both of them are not for everyone, but there's another amendment to fix that.

Baucus fucked this up goog, and I have no idea why this instead of the Kennedy bill or HR3200 should be the starting point for the debate.

Andy K's picture

The larger problem, however, is a Supreme Court of the United States that holds the opinion that the corporations represented by lobbyists have the rights of actual human beings, and that the political efforts of those corporations are protected by the First Amendment as political speech.

While this is true, public campaign financing can still be used to turn back the special interests because it is the candidates choice. However, primary challengers would get an equal match of public funds to the exact amount an incumbant raises if they choose to use private funds.

– The cost of $6 per taxpayer per year would be a bargain at 100 times the price. We are currently wasting $5000 per taxpayer per year in pork barrel projects and no-bid contracts and unproductive subsidies, all given to the industries that fund the elections. $1300 per taxpayer at the state level.

– In AZ, ME and CT they have 70% of their elected politicians who have chosen to shun private money from special interests. They have virtually eliminated fundraisers.

– “Clean elections” levels the playing field and allows ordinary citizens to run against corporately-funded candidates.

– We taxpayers are paying these costs anyway, through increased government spending and when the special interests add their political costs to the price of their product and we reimburse them at the cash register.

In Arizona it’s not even taxpayer money that is being used, it’s a 10% surcharge on criminal fines. If you don’t want to contribute, don’t speed.

Ask your two Senators and Representative to sign on, support, and vote for “The Fair Elections Now Act” (S. 752 and H.R. 1826) introduced by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) and by Reps. John Larson (D-Conn.) and Walter Jones, Jr. (R-N.C.).

Paul's picture

Actually, term limits might not work. They could, but what is probably needed is the crafting and subsequent ratification of 7 new Constitutional Amendments. To wit:

1. Corporations and other entities are not persons, and thus do not enjoy any rights accorded to persons. Only people capable of independent existence may be considered persons. The lack of personhood shall in no way exempt corporations and other entities from all liabilities, punishments and remedies available under criminal and civil law.

2. All elections, from the local to the federal level shall be federally funded. Only persons may opt to donate money, up to $10, in 2009 dollars, as designated on their Federal Tax returns. Entities lacking personhood shall not enjoy this privilege.

3. The sole acceptable means of conducting business with elected officials shall be soley by means of petition, official mail that is the property of the public and through public hearings, in which all sides are represented. Closed door hearings relating to matters of national security shall have citizen oversight, whereby such oversight is decided in the manner of jury duty and juryselection. Elected officials who violate this standard of transparency and integrity shall be subjected to life in prison with forfeiture of all personal and family assets and wealth. Bribers and corrupters shall be subject to the death penalty.

4. The Federal Courts, Courts of Appeal and the Supreme Court shall always be compelled to decide in favor of the individual, the poor or otherwise disadvantaged, in favor the collective well-being of the People, or, in favor of the environment, when there is a conflict between these groups or interests and the power of the state, the power of business or the power of the wealthy and privileged. Any judge or justice sitting in any of these courts may be impeached for failing in this obligation.

5. the clause that obligates Congress to provide for the common defense, taxes and so on should be amended to include the obligation to provide universal cradle to grave healthcare, using it's power to tax as the means to meet this obligation.

6. The life cycle of every Federal agency, regardless of what branck of government established the agency, shall not exceed 25 years, from it's initial creation. Thereafter, it's continued existence must be approved by popular referendum every 25 years thereafter. The People shall also have the ability to abolish or restructure by referendum any federal agency, which by popular consensus, no longer serves the will of the People or their interests.

7. Pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

...or sentiments to that effect.

Until these kind of crooks start being sent up for long prison terms, their brand of quid pro quo bribery is going to continue. If the DoJ got a petition with a few million signatories, it might get off its ass and do something about it. The laws exist to prevent these kinds of crimes of corruption, and the corruption is never going to stop if they aren't enforced.

Anybody got any ideas?

Ideas?

1) Watch American Idol
2) Watch Dance Your Ass Off
3) Watch Dancing With The Stars
4) Watch Brooke Knows Best...

or...

COPS, Reform School, The Real Wives of what ever county has the most impressive tits at the moment...

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

Here is a report that Common Cause created called "Legislating Under the Influence" which will provide you with some useful data and statistics.

I'll check it out.

I have wondered the same thing. Why doesn't somebody with a law degree file a suit against them?

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

I give up.

all those legislators who have made it legal to accept bribes. You know the ones who voted down term limits and so on. The ones who are now going to bring you mandatory purchase of private corporation goods and "services," and make mandatory the use of barely tested vaccines and drugs for Big Pharma. Welcome to your nightmare.

why vigilante "justice" comes about.

Baucus, Conrad, Lincoln should be on everyones bullseye

LimpBalls

This should not be surprising to anyone as we all know the Senate Finance Committee is nothing but a whore committee to special interests.

Any legislation that passes IS going to be passed through reconciliation period. Democrats don't need 60 they only need 50. Democrats will need to get creative to weave their way through the Byrd rule and some things will have to be thrown out. However, take what had to be thrown out and use that stuff to beat the GOP and Blue Dogs over the head with in the midterms.

theWalrus's picture

The Rightwing PR machine will now go into full swing on how Reconcilliation is COMMUNIST! Their talking points we heard today at the Finance Committee will be regurgitated endlessly. The insurance lobbyists will be furiously stuffing the pockets of Dems & Repubs alike. Any legislation in the end will be practically useless. And unfortunately, the WH will remain quiet until it's way too late, like they did with the "death panel" strategy.

rule gets what it needs. It will not be a problem, because the single payer proposal satisfies its requirement. Zippity do dah! Law! Ta-Da. Thank you very much. We win. Corps can go to hell. Some may say this is too simple. It isn't.

Schumer's was voted down 13-10

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Conrad and Lincoln are running next year. The democrats better damn well get somebody to take them out in the primaries.

Now is when we write (real letters), email, and phone all the senators who voted against these amendments and CALL THEM OUT! They need to hear from a large group of people that this is not OK! Act TODAY!

ghostrider's picture

Even if the Senate Finance Committee votes it down, they're going to put an amendment with the public health option on the floor vote. What exactly was Baucus' reasoning for voting against it? Because it had no chance of passing? I have no use for any Democrat that voted against either amendment. Carper has no excuse. He's from Delaware which is as blue as it gets. Primary the bastard. Seriously, I don't care how red the state is these Dems are coming from. A public option is popular among their constituents. Glad the conservadems are put on record.

"Primary the bastard"

It's now a verb.

ghostrider's picture

Let's make it happen. I'm so angry, I can barely see straight. With Democrats like these who needs repugs?

donviti's picture

Delaware wont' primary Carper. Not a chance. We are having enough trouble trying to figure out how they are going to turn over Biden's old senate seat to his son Beau.

Carper is safe he knows it.

He is in the pockets of the corporations. Delaware may be blue, but the Senators and congressman are plainly for Big Business.

Sickening

at this early date. He will ultimately screw us. It's strategy.
Please do not be fooled into thinking Delaware is a blue state. It is THE corporate state. Research it. You'll be shocked and amazed.

Who cares if the Repukes will fillibuster anyways ? YOU have a majority in both houses plus the WH itself. Its just a cop out because
you have been bought and paid for and refuse to admit it. Let them fillibuster. Roll out the cots and order the pizza. Jesus H Christ....
Spineless fucking pussies.

In April, when Obama was getting his budget passed, the Democrats slipped a tiny bit of text called a “reconciliation instruction” into the budget bill. What that means is that if a particular legislative issue (health care in this case) is not resolved by a certain date (October 15 in this case), that particular issue can pass through the Senate by means of reconciliation, which means there is only limited debate, and that it only needs a majority vote to pass, not 60. Only 50 + 1 which would be Biden's vote

There are obstacles to maneuver in terms of what the Parliamentarian will allow to passed.

Im not even American....LMAO I sometimes wonder why i even care or bother. I have universal health care. I just like people , hate crooks and corruption , and know a good screwing when i see one.
This time the bastards are flying in the face of 60 to 70% polls of Americans who demand a better shake at health care. MAKE THEM PAY FOR THEIR TREASON !!!!

in this hallowed hall of blog commentary will shatter the chains
which bind the sleeping giant of the American public and reform not just health care, but the campaign finance system and lobbying as well. We will do in 2010 what we almost did in 2008.

are no match for the USSC and the deep, deep pockets of lobbyists.

With the USSC set to overturn campaign reform, democracy as we know it (or thought we knew it) will pretty much cease to exist.

Do you know something I don't? The Supreme Court has not ruled yet. I do not think they will allow corporations to open their coffers because doing so would be extremely dangerous to the sovereignty of the United States because multi-national companies would be given the green light to unduly influence our government.

for, thus their appointment of G.W. Bush to the position of President of the United States in 2000. I'm sorry to tell you that, but it's true. One of the biggest disappointments of my life was learning that fact. I really am sorry to have to tell you that, but if a problem is not acknowledged and understood, there is very little chance it can be fixed.

You mean the US Supreme Court, and the way it is poised to overturn corporate contribution limitations? And how the United States will then truly be owned by corporate masters?

Yep, it's true...and nobody is talking about it much.

The details are here.
