I didn't see this one coming...I felt bad for A-Rod after reading some of Torre's new book, "The Yankee Years," but I never thought he was juicing...

Maybe there's something to this A-Fraud stuff.

Is this newsworthy?

Yes. Read my post that follows - the MLB owners are acting exactly like the republicans, and the overpaid steroid-laden players like greedy corporations.

Baseball owners don't want to get rid of steroids, they want testing to fail.

If that weren't true, they could get rid of steroids within three years: call the strike zone as described in the rulebook, armpits to knees and the width of the plate.

With a strike zone the size of a door instead of a keyhole, hitters who aren't flexible enough for a big strike zone (i.e. the steroid monkeys) wouldn't be able to hit anything. Contact hitters would rule, and junkball pitchers would replace overpriced and juiced up fireballers. Steroids would leave the game because players using them couldn't compete against clean players.

The inevitable result would be fewer home runs and more singles and steals. But of course, home runs and "strikeout kings" sell tickets, so the owners will never go for it. They just want the players to stop being caught.

if a player uses steroids. It's a sham. I'm a big baseball fan, grew up with my grandfather taking me to old Yankee stadium when they were in last place in the late 60's...
I loved Mickey mantle and Bobby Murcer... I know all about the Repub crap and King George, but when you're a fan of a team, for me it's a life long thing.

I think being part of the working class, sports plays a bigger role for a reason that I'm working on in a new post.

Anyway, as C&Lers know I'm a big sports fan so I post a lot about it. I played sports all through the little leagues, Pop Warner football, CYO basketball---all through college.
I was a well regarded short stop until I started hanging out in the late 70's and got heavily into music...LOL...

ConcernedCanuck's picture

on the humongous wages being dished out in this off season John? Considering the economic mess, do you think players and owners should maybe slow down on the huge payrolls before they drive the fans away again?

Uncle Joe Mccarthy's picture

your heroes in the 60s and 70s were popping pills like its nobodies business

and if you dont think taking speed is a performance enhancer...go talk to a player who is trying to play a day after night game at the end of a 2 week road trip

most players used ped's to bounce back from injury...or to not lose what they had at the start of a season, by the end

its entertainment for christs sake

and dont get me started on murcer....man got traded to my team (sf giants) didnt like the cold or the stick, so he never even tried to play hard

At least in the cocaine era of the early 1980s, the negative effects of the players' use evened out their stats in the long run, hurting them later if cocaine use "helped" them at all.

The ill-effects of steroid use don't come into play until very late in a player's career or after it's over.

if proven true it's ashame. nothing new about cheating but it seems to be pervassive. go Twins.

John Amato's picture

I respect that team, but hated the ownership...

...like A-rod juice to achieve their performance levels and astronomical salaries, and Michael Phelps gets raked over the coals for doing something a large part of the population has done at one time or another!

unless you are a snowboarder. I'm boycotting every motherfucker that is kicking Phelps to the curb. Kellogg's and Subway, going to hell go to fucking hell. Why do you think many people eat your food? Because they're high goddamnit.

But I have it that miss_kitty formerly served in the Navy as the CPO of an old diesel-powered sub. That sort of potty talk is encouraged in old salts.

The Pot wasn't on the screened drugs list in that league until the last contract between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association in 1998.

I recall the low-key chat on the issue by former NBA players then (and earlier, when Robert "The Chief" Parrish and James "Buddha" Edwards were busted for possession), and the word was that pot was considered a performance enhancer because it helped players focus while on the court (I've heard that reefer addicts sometimes hone right in on matters at hand when gooped up) , and it helped them sleep (the NBA has just about the roughest travel schedule of all the major N. American sports, with long distance flights caught after games....And you can figure out why lack of sleep might hurt a player's game, I'm sure).

Swimming isn't completely clean. In 1998, many on the Chinese swim team were caught using drugs to enhance performance.

Phelps has never tested positive, I'll agree to. But as far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out on whether he's clean. Especially with so many medals and records all at once.

miss_kitty's picture

tell me how marijuana, which impairs lung function when smoked, would enhance a swimmer's performance. Because if it exists, I want some of THAT shit.

Edit: Ooops Misread and misunderstood your post...I'll go away now. :D

How was he ever going to live up to that gargantuan salary the Rangers lined at him?

I'm sick of the Mariners being the Yankees goddamned farm team, BTW.

JM's picture

Just look at who was on that team at one time; Griffey, Jr., Cruz, Jr., Randy Johnson, A-rod! Damn!!

Sweet bleeding mother of Babe Ruth!! ;D

after the 'Big Win,' the one that got the new ballpark funding shoved up our arses, about a week after the majority of people in Seattle voted it down.

And it was Tino's double that got the state to realize Nintendo's dream of a new stadium.

Seattle sucks at sports. Try so hard and BAM! kicked in the teeth.

The Sonics! :(

the Lying three toed Okies and the idiot bastard who believed them when they said they didn't want a team min OKC.

Shit kickers.

I feel mostly outraged about this because my dad worked for Barry Ackerley owner before Howard 'Charfucks' Schultz (who I dislike for landscaping reasons to begin with) and ass kicking season tickets were part of the compensation package.

He shoved his hand up Seattle's ass and left for Texas. He should have stayed in Texas where his juice would have stayed undercover.

The clueless NYY now make him the highest player, in money and dope, to run around and fuck as many women as he can get.

Until the public grows a pair and quits buying tickets, this will continue to be the name of the game, greed and dope.

behind the Kansas City A's fans.

Hey, the Expos no longer exist, so the big-money teams had to get their players from somewhere because they sure as hell don't develop the players themselves.

This just dropped at the NYT about 45 minutes ago:

Yankees Pay for Rodriguez in More Ways Than One

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch. Thanks for taking him off our hands, Rangers...

I'm not sure, what's wrong with that?

Are steroid illegal, as I've always assumed

Or just against league rules?

Is it a question of cheating?

Why was Congress holding hearings on baseball players on steroids a year or so ago?

From reports I've heard, Americans are laughing off whassisname, the Olympic swimmer's pot smoking.

Diabolus est Deus Inversus

ConcernedCanuck's picture

Was a politicians distraction, to keep the sheep from actually watching what the politicians were doing. Everywhere you went, all you heard about was the steroid "scandal".
And if everyone is on steroids, where is the cheating relevant?
As for the smoking, it is an Olympic law, nothing more. Olympic committees and administrators need to be in the news once in awhile to justify their wages. Either that, or they are all full of shite. ;-)

Ummm - this doesn't surprise me in the least.

When Phelps won gold at the Athens olympics (I think 6?) I put a question mark alongside his name.

I immediately thought Eastern European female atheletes and swimmers in the 70s, Chinese swimmers, Greek atheletes, Ben Johnson, Marion Jones etc.

In Beijing, the IOC kept bragging how clean those games were- despite them only testing a very small random sample of competitors. I smelled something was very rotten in Denmark - well in Beijing.

Were the communists up to their old tricks again? Were the Americans and other western countries doing the same???

And then Phelps wins 8 gold medals - ALL in world record time - and apparently he is "clean"???

If the US government can go to war based on "faulty information" , then it can cover up systematic steroid use amongst it's competitors.

I hope I am wrong - but the circumstancial evidence is pointing in the direction that Phelps may be a "cheat"!

After Athens - he is caught drink driving! and now after Beijinh he is caught with a bong?

Is this the sort of "clean" behaviour an 8 time gold medalist and world record holder should be behaving???

I think not!

And I think we will have a press conference in the near future - like Marion Jones did - confessing something rotten.

This is one of the reasons I love players like Ichiro Suzuki. There are no drugs that can give someone the ability to see a ball like that. Getting 260 base hits could only be done through talent.

Bitter Bud Hussein's picture

that $25 million a year doesn't get much. No World Series trophies - most of the time, it doesn't even get you to the playoffs.

I heard a rumor back with PayRod was with Texass - his nickname was "The Cooler" because everywhere he went, a hot team suddenly cooled off. Check out Texass before 2003 - check out the Yankees before 2004 - see what both have done since?

A-Rod is just another doper -

is anyone really suprised? no one is that athletic. it's only a matter of time until the news of Manny Ramirez's use of 'roids is leaked. sorry Amato, but it's so New York, the culture of corruption goes from Wall Street all the way to the Bronx. i know, i know, he was playing for Texas at the time.... GO RED SOX!!!!

nate

Some of us can stand your Sawwwwwx even less.

I really, really, really want realignment so the Tigers would play the Yanks, Sawwwwwx, O's and Jays more often. The new rivalries in the AL Central just don't feel the same as the old AL (two division) East rivalries. Not at all.

CFAmick's picture

I'm disappointed in my childhood heroes. I blame the owners and the union for not protecing the players. It's also hypocritical to go after the guys for a time when steroids weren't banned. For the last two I say put them in the Hall so that no one forgets!

Peanutcat's picture

Who gives a fuck? I certainly don't.

Yankee fans never see it coming. Epic chokes. White collar crime committed by the Steinbrenners. Fraud. Fleecing the taxpayer. Corrupting the NYC Mayor's office.

Did I mention epic chokes?

They act so surprised every time a Giambi or A-Rod falls from grace.

It's hilarious.
