Susan Collins to vote against Geithner's confirmation: Geithner is confirmed
By John Amato Monday Jan 26, 2009 5:00pmRep. Susan Collins, one of the few moderates left in the GOP told Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC that she was not going to vote for TG because of his tax return problems.
There's just a little bit more of that bipartisanship we can expect from Republicans in Congress and which President Obama has been fighting for. For me, the more obstruction the better.
Not that it mattered much. The Senate confirms Geithner: 60-34

Any relation to Joan?
Not unless you took a metal skillet and whacked Joan in the face a couple of hundred times, then their might be a resemblance.
Is this guy going to pay the taxes, interest, and penalties?
He already has. Do you live in a cave, or something?
said he didn't pay taxes uncollectable because of the statute of limitations (generally, 3 years).
Bad choice for Treas Sec, I believe.
i thought the irs can go after you forever
i wonder what is going to happen this coming april 15th
It seems like just yesterday that the monolithic right-wing talking point was that our dear leader was entitled have to the cabinet he chooses without the Democrats asking nosey questions. Phooey on "moderate" Republican Collins. (When did moderate come to mean polite and pleasant? When you vote the party line on every atrocity your party puts forward, you're not a moderate Republican, you're a rabid one.)
She's pro-choice, pro-stem cell, possibly pro-gay....it's all in her wikipedia article. But voting anything that is not approved by the Rethugs gets you called "repug in name only". Still, even if you disagree with everything the Nazi party says, yet you still call yourself one.....well, that's effed up.
What is a "moderate Republican" anyway? Someone who abhors and votes against government spending, except when it's their party doing the spending? Someone who loathes and votes against government intrusion into our private lives, unless it's their party doing the wiretapping, or when people start having s*e*x? Susan Collins and every other Republican is permanently stained by their affiliation with Bush. The only Republicans I respect are former Republicans.

Senior moment. Velly solly.
she is my Senator here in Maine. A weird one. Joe Lieberman raised a ton of money for her in her recent win over Tom Allen who ran his usual wimpy campaign. If you ever get stuck in a room where she is talking, remove your glasses or anything breakable. Her voice can shatter glass.
Even union members from Bath Iron Works (General Dynamics) in Bath, Maine vote for her because she pretends to support them, but she didn't do diddly to save our base in Brunswick which will cost about 6,000 jobs and millions to our local economy.
She is not moderate. I don't know what the hell she is but it ain't anywheres near moderate.
Hey John, I was going to point out that she should be referred to as Sen. Susan Collins, rather than Rep., but Jo did it in a much more diplomatic way.
(Which, of course, I just blew. Sorry.)
I'm a Mainer as well, and I've been gagging on this myth of snowe and collins as "moderates" forever. The senate GOP leadership has always allowed them to vote all mavericky when they aren't needed to pass a bill or block cloture. That allows them to pretend to be moderates in a state where that plays well.
Yes, I know, impeachment. But, on all other matters, you could always count on collins and snowe as solid votes for the worst right wing legislation.
The OLD wing of the GOP has been dead and gone for a long time but
whenever the Party is down and out, the "moderate" term is thrown back
out into the public.
Expect to hear this nonsense from here on................ The MYTH IS BACK!
Congressman Mark Kirk of Illinois is labeled a "Moderate" yet he has always
voted with the GOP EXCEPT when they didn't need his vote. Then he "brazenly"
voted his own way................ to help with his future campaign ads.
Right now in Illinois, Kirk is being touted as our next GOP Savior as our
future Gov or Senator. It is disgusting. He recently said he is going to
clean up our state politics. Right!
My suggestion for him is if he REALLY wants to do this, he must first
go to our state prison and meet with Felon George Ryan our former Republican
Illinois Gov and ask him, "How did you get away with your crimes going
undetected for so long, George? Step by step, how'd you do it?"
Yes, the MYTH is back and we must expose it for what is is............... BS.
If the Democrats aren't thinking "partisan politics" then they are fooling themselves. The "pube's" are only thinking of themselves. The "blues" must think PARTISAN! It's the train of thought in Washington. Boehner is living proof of it. And, if Collins wants to do the same then it's time for KARMA. The "reds" caused all of America's problems. Don't let them make any more decisions. Don't let the "blues" go limp. Attack! You've got the snakes head in your grip, just whack the head off with the knife. Quit trying to talk to the hisser! THINK PARTISAN!
George Washington
too many objections to too many folks are being ignored...
and i don't mean susan collins.
Just put the Kool-Aid down. Get a glass of water. Take a breath. Get critical again. Really. You NEED to do this...

yippekayay
Welcome back, Uncle Joe! Where ya been?
for going a bit nuts

has franken been seated yet? coleman took a job as a lobbyist...doesnt that mean he has given up?
"going a bit nuts" - does this mean you were temporarily Republican?
Seriously, I hope things have worked out for you. I've recently had some troubled times myself, and am on the upside of the whole process.
and things are totally shitty, and with a forecast of even shitier
12 years ago i changed careers...leaving social work to go into high tech
ground floor of the tech boom
always knew it wouldnt last...but always thought the biz was mostly recession proof
shoulda stuck with social work...pay sucks, the people you work with can be totally nuts and its hard to seperate work from home...but it is recession proof
hey...live and learn
at least i can fix my own computer...hopefully ill still be able to pay the electric and dsl bills
Hi Joe. Sorry to hear your are being affected by the Bush recession. Keep posting because your points are valid.
I don't think I like this guy Geithner much but they say he is good. I guess I will just stay ready to pounce if he screws up and pulls a Paulson.
You seem to have demoted Ms. Collins from senator to representative -- not that she doesn't deserve it, mind you.
The guy that oversees the IRS should know that he has to pay Social Security tax if he's self-employed. The IMF even gave him extra money to pay the tax and he skipped it.
I can't deny that I do not agree with this appointment. A person with tax problems to head to Treasury Department doesn't compute. Even when caught he pulled the ruse of 'statute of limitations' for another tax year obligation. In this entire country is there no one with the skill and experience needed other than this guy? If not, we are in a bad way.
the working stiff uses turbo tax...a guy who has multiple jobs that are high paying...doesnt
he gets an accountant...an accountant who will go to the audit for him
this nomination and the vetting process that went into it makes me nervous
why give the repugs even a tiny thing to latch onto
Thanks so much for taking a meaningless, insignificant stand. Of course, you belong to a meaningless, insignificant party.
You really showed us a thing or two, didn't you?

I think I hear the Democratic steamroller warming up in the wings!!!!
this is truly perplexing. do you instill a guy who knowingly (no matter what he claims that's knowingly) did not pay his taxes for several years, do you place him charge of the nation's finances, because he is shrewd and knowing and can probably fix the ills that beset this country's finances, or does one say, how shrewd and knowledgeable can he be if he in fact did not pay taxes and must now reap the penalities that go along with that decision. And just because a republican or many republicans stand against his appointment that will have no bearing on my decision.
my decision, out of all the people in this land, i really think obama and his people could have done a better job of researching before coming up with a name.
this guy's appointment is hurting the liberal image about a much as anything the repubs have done for the past 8 years. Let's not forget that they had scandal de jour running on premium for a long while there with virtually no consequences. Where were the high and mighty who now call for truth and justice, where were they then. Just my personal rantings. Both this guy and Blogjanovich need to quietly exit, leave without too much fanfare. have some decency. get out.
And she's joined by traitors Bernies Sanders, Russ Feingold and Tom Harkin (possibly the only three senators who, regardless of whether or not you agree with their positions, reliably vote in the interests of their constituents). Geithner was a pathetic (and combined with the rest of Obama's economic team, dangerous) choice. That abrupt stop at the end of the fall is nearing.
I'm an avid Obama supporter. But I take issue with Geithner's tax issues. Whether stupidity, ignorance or criminal, not paying $34,000 in taxes (what kind of income does it take to owe $34,000 in taxes?) doesn't say anything positive about him. I trust the Obama administration that he is the person for this position. Both the administration and the public should watch his performance closely, however.
I have to tell you, I am way liberal, but I too have reservations about the whole tax thing. It's just not passing my smell test.
And so it begins!
John Amato looks the other way while a wolf in sheep's clothing gets confirmed to oversee our Treasury.
John: Why have you gone soft? Is it Obama? Are you really hoping for a new direction and/or change? Ha!
Why dont you dissect those executive statements vis-a-vis GITMO? Because if you did, you would see that Obama is just doing PR.
Obama is already a war criminal! He attacked Pakistan without a declaration of war by CONgress! Further, he killed innocent children and women.
You, John Amato, are a useful tool.
We need to stop being Republicans and Democrats and start watching closely what our elected and appointed officials are doing to our country. The government of this republic was created to preserve freedoms that are quickly fading; when the government can get people to rely on them for the things necessary for life, there is a natural transfer of power from the people to the government. I believe we are seeing this happen. I have heard that the response of the people toward the nominee Tim Geithner was overwhelmingly negative but the people that are our representatives ignored us and common sense and voted to confirm him. He never would have been considered for a financial position that requires integrity in the private business sector. We are putting an enormous burden on our children and succeeding generations and the government is printing money to lessen the debt they have committed us to. This is insanity or an attempt to ruin our country so power can be stolen from “we the people” of this republic.
