I do enjoy the occasional whack-job. Thanks.

Americans everywhere today are sending kudos to David Letterman for doing something even Keith Olberman couldn't do: Tie John McCain's intimacy with Gordon Liddy as a "domestic terrorist" connection. Here's the 'gist of what went down last night:

Yes, that G. Gordon Liddy:

Liddy served four and a half years in prison in connection with his conviction for his role in the Watergate break-in and the break-in at the office of the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg.... plotting to murder journalist Jack Anderson; plotting with a "gangland figure" to murder Howard Hunt to stop him from cooperating with investigators; plotting to firebomb the Brookings Institution; and plotting to kidnap "leftist guerillas" at the 1972 Republican National Convention -- a plan he outlined to the Nixon administration using terminology borrowed from the Nazis...

During the 1990s, Liddy reportedly instructed his radio audience on multiple occasions on how to shoot Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents and also reportedly said he had named his shooting targets after Bill and Hillary Clinton.

The best part?

McCain praised Liddy's "adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great," [and] said he was "proud" of Liddy...

Now let's watch this gain traction (legitimate traction with current day intimacy to this degraded terrorist) since McCain thought it so important to mention Ayers who did these things when Obama was 8 years old.

How old is McCain? 72?? So this 72 year old today has intimate ties to this domestic terrorist? This is priceless.

Gordon Liddy, Jack Singlaub (US Council for World Freedom) and Carl Lindner, CEO Chicquita Banana who funded terrorists in columbia (FARC and AUC) will become McCain's "anchor" around his neck for the next two weeks.

Shake in a little "shake 'n bake" ala Vicki Iseman mistress-style and you've got a prescription for a McCain implosion..

And Obama doesn't have to lift a finger.

John McCain's sleazy reputation will take him down for the count.

Wednesday at the final debate:

''We need to know the full extent of Sen. Obama's relationship with ACORN, who is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy,'' McCain said.

Do I hear the prelude wafts of "I-Only-Lost-Because-Obama-Stole-It"?

Once more, the conclusion that John McCain's recklessness disqualifies him to be president comes to the fore with his capricious selection of Joe, the Plumber as the dominating subject for his last and final debate with the american people.

What's become clear to americans today is that McCain doesn't understand the importance of properly "vetting" anyone. He's reckless and is mavericky in that respect but it's a character trait which disqualifies from assuming the most important position in this country.

We knew it was a problematic conclusion for americans when we discovered his selection of Palin, perhaps the most unqualified candidate to ever enter the candidacy for Vice President. With each Palin stunt and interview, this conclusion became painfully (treasonously?) apparent to everyone.

Now factor the backlash of his selection of Joe - this man not only doesn't have the resources to purchase a business which would put him into the quarter of a million dollar income category but he has a tax lien against him right now to the tune of $1,180. The man doesn't even have a license for goodness sakes. Add to this that this man would receive (and has finally admitted it publicly) a tax break from Obama and not from John McCain.

You can't make this nonsense up - it's fodder for some future comedy - but right now it tells the tale of a washed-up, old politico whose stunts are backfiring in his face like some circus clown. All he needs is a ruffle and some theatre paint (whoops...he already wears that onstage to hide his pock marks and scars).

In any case, if I were Joe, the Alaskan Plumber, I'd sue the pants off of Johnny McGambler right now for placing him in the public scrutiny and destroying both his reputation and his future.

Clearly, Mr. Johnny ShootFromTheHip only ends up shooting himself in the foot and further convincing all americans just how dangerous and reckless he actually is.

Next week: GORDON LIDDY, JACK SINGLAUB, CARL LINDNER, VICKI ISEMAN WEEK! IT'S GOING TO BE A DOOSEY.

I don't understand why the non story of ACORN continues to have legs. Anyone with the least bit of interest in the story can quickly see that all of those crazy registration cards with phony names that so upset the Republicans do not represent any actual votes. ACORN does not have the final say of who gets registered and who doesn't. By law they must turn in all of the cards and some are phony, some are incomplete, and some are good. The exact same thing that happens at any place where people fill out voter registration cards, including any of the many government offices, and both Democratic and REPUBLICAN voter registration drives.

I watched McCain on Letterman last night and at least three times he told a half truth followed by, "That's all you need to know about that!"

Literally!

All we need is half the truth. The part of the story that will make the entire story a lie.

pissed off patricia's picture

I am totally with you on this one. The only thing I can figure out is they are going to try to use this to explain, in some magical way, the reason for what may be a large number of voter suppression come voting day.

If we start to hear of large numbers of voters being turned away from the polls in these states where the repubs are complaining about Acorn, we'll know this was the plan.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

‘Joe The Plumber’ Comes Clean: ‘I Would Be Receiving Obama’s Tax Cuts’»
As ThinkProgress and many others noted yesterday, the premise of Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher’s complaints about Barack Obama’s tax plan was ill-informed. Contrary to Wurzelbacher’s claims, “neither his personal taxes nor those of the business where he works are likely to rise if Mr. Obama’s tax plan were to go into effect.”

As CBS News reported, even “Joe The Plumber” acknowledges this fact now:

So today, Joe, who said he makes much less than $250,000, reluctantly admitted Obama would lower his taxes.

“I would, if you believe him, I would be receiving his tax cuts,” Wurzelbacher said.

Bloomberg reports that “one other problem in making Wurzelbacher a symbol of the overtaxed” is that — even if he did earn an adjusted gross income of $280,000 — “he would pay just $773 more in taxes under Obama’s plan than McCain’s.” That amount would hardly deal a crippling blow to his potential small business.

Last night, Sarah Palin said she didn’t want to talk about Wurzelbacher. “I begged our speechwriters, ‘Don’t make me say Joe the Plumber, please, in any speeches,” she said. After failing to properly vet Wurzelbacher’s situation, the McCain campaign is apparently now throwing him overboard and moving on.

The campaign is holding a conference call today with Russ Deker, an individual the McCain camp is calling “a Missouri ‘Joe the Plumber.’

One would think that filling one's last chance with the american people to convince them that he deserves to be their commander in chief would have vetted his Joe, the Alaskan Plumber meme before recklessly using it and looking instead, like the Village Idiot and not presidential at all?

I don't know who is advising John McCain at this point but whomever it is needs to be bound and gagged - and soon - before the numbers nationwide are not only previewing a landslide but actually a tsunami of support for Obama and disdain/disrespect for McCain.

I believe the conventional wisdom within the GOP right now is to ditch McCain as a total loser. His last debate made him look like he'd be a better poster boy for anger management issues than for president. Then his "stunt" about Joe, the Plumber, totally backfired in his face - just like everything else they've advised him to do.

With a little more than two weeks left, if I were a McCain advisor, I think that I'd make every attempt to regain the public respect for this once-respectable man. It may be, in fact, too late to even do this but it's worth a shot; otherwise, the legacy of John McCain will be forever cemented in the collective mind of america - a sleazeball who has disgraced himself.

The right wingnut hate is being repudiated by sensible, peace-loving americans who will not permit this taint, this carcinoma of terror and hate, to further penetrate the american landscape. Unfortunately now for John McCain, his face and Palin's will be forever associated with this very sick, demented, psychotic aspect of unamerican behavior as well.

Frankly, I don't believe that McCain can even resurrect his image as a "hate monger, war monger, and terrorist enabler" at this point and regain a stroke of the dignity he once had.

RIP: Old John McCain

The new John McCain will now live in infamy.

xoites defends Constitution's picture

His only chance to redeem himself would be to apologize to America for playing the hate card, renounce his VP choice as a cynical and calculated move to the right and withdraw from the race.

At least then he could possibly get a job as David Letterman's Ed McMahon.

If he can't verify information about Joe the plumber, how is he going to verify information about critical situations happening around the world?

anonymous's picture

thanks for the TP link!

Unfortunately, this will come forward as what it was - a capricious political stunt which backfired in their faces.

It reminds me of the Anti-Midas Syndrome of George Bush - everything he touches turns to $hit. Everyting McCain does backfires in his face and tanks his numbers.

The bottom line: John McCain can't even control his own campaign as it's CEO - how the hell can he handle the critical problems we're now facing.

Clearly, John McCain is unfit and unstable for this job.

Thanks for the info on this racist pig. Diane Fedele needs to be bombarded with our thoughts regarding how piggishly unamerican she is today. Before the end of today, her inbox will be filled with condemnation of her overt racism and her phone will be off the hook.

Cowards, all of them - just like John McCain.

Incidentally, I found it fascinating how McCain claimed that Liddy was repentent and had paid the price as being "okay to pall around with domestic terrorists" today. Where is McCain's own repentence for inciting people to terrorism at his rallies and violating the laws of this country? Unrepentent McCain? This man is a schizoid.

Here is Fair's report on how Islamophobia has been spread in our country

Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) has done us all a service by publishing this important downloadable report, Smearcasters: How Islamophobes spread fear, bigotry and misinformation. It is filled with a familiar right-wing cast of characters like self-styled “terrorism expert” Steve Emerson, inveterate Muslim-basher Daniel Pipes, David Horowitz “the Islamophobia movement’s premier promoter”, and Fox talking heads Sean Hannity and BIll O’Reilly.

So what’s wrong with the report? While FAIR documents numerous examples of false reporting, hyperbole, McCarthyite innuendo and pure hate promulgated by these people, they seem to self-censor and deliberately avoid the obvious: the central role played by US-based Likudnik groups in funding and promoting much of this anti-Muslim hysteria.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Fair does not address how Aipac promotes Islamophobia on their website. And how Senator McCain, Bill Kristol, Palin, Senator Liberman and many others continually repeat the debunked and inaccurate statement that the Iranian President Ahmadenijad wants to "wipe Israel off the Map" I just heard that false statement repeated on C-Spans Washington Journal (have heard it repeated on C-span often) by Sydney Greenberg of National Journal.

Have also heard Chris Matthews, George Stephanopolous, Bob Schieffer, Diane Rehm, (she has started to challenge this debunked statement) Neil Conan of Talk of the Nation, Fresh Air's Terri Gross has actually repeated this statement as fact herself. All of these MSMers have allowed this statement to be endlessly repeated the last three years.

When inflammatory and false statements like this are allowed to go by unchallenged (hello WMD's) this helps create the environment for an escalation of actions against Iran. It needs to stop

Here is the link to Fair's Report on the spreading of Islamophobia
http://www.smearcasting.com/index.html

While this is a start Fair needs to also focus on how Weekly Standard and other publications and website promote Islamophobia. How Kristol, Frum, James Woolsey, Senator Lieberman, John Bolton, Ledeen and others promote this type of fear and repeat inaccurate and dangerous statements

Talk about lowering the bar...

Now I understand that Letterman's show is laced with comedy, but geez...McCain's answer to the question posed by Letterman..."What happened?"...is..."I screwed up?" That's his answer? Even when asked a second and third time.

It was bad enough when Reagan testified under oath...and "I don't recall" became an acceptable response when confronted by written and spoke and verified evidence and testimony.

"President McCain...terrorists just blew up a nuclear power plant in Louisiana...how did this happen?..."We screwed up."

"President McCain...you just signed legislation that undermines Roe v. Wade which was buried in the Omnibus Budget Bill...How did that happen?"..."I screwed up."

President McCain..."There is evidence that on your last trip to Europe...you made a statement toward Russia that could be perceived as threatening...but now upon advice of your advisors...you've restated. How did that happen?"..."I screwed up."

We're not dumbing down America and lowering our standards...we don't have any standards.
