I'm not sure his religious bent doesn't predispose him to a humanist eschatology. The Roman Republic was on the right side of history too. But then there was Caligula, Attila the Hun, the Dark Ages, the Crusades, black death and witch burnings. And humanity hadn't populated itself to the point of eating the planet bare and warming it like an oven back then.

I'm getting swayed by the transhumanist arguments. Homo sapiens are inherently defective primates for either species or planetary survival. We need a fundamentally different Homo sapiens v. 2.0 and we need the transition now if this planet has any chance.

I'm not sure it's accurate to blame all of humanity. The Crusades, Witch Burnings, WMDs, ... these were all inherently the CONSERVATIVE strain of bright ideas. These are the people who have yet to evolve far past the neanderthals.

Hooray for lobbyists out of work, and driftglass' post is a home run.

And Ornery Bastard's story should get a lot more noise, frankly. I'd love to see the end of (most) lobbyists in Washington.
