Tea Party Protests: 'Ni**er,' 'Fa**ot' Shouted At Members Of Congress
Abusive, derogatory and even racist behavior directed at House Democrats by Tea Party protesters on Saturday left several lawmakers in shock.
Preceding the president's speech to a gathering of House Democrats, thousands of protesters descended around the Capitol to protest the passage of health care reform. The gathering quickly turned into abusive heckling, as members of Congress passing through Longworth House office building were subjected to epithets and even mild physical abuse.
A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) had been spat on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a 'ni--er.' And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a "******," as protestors shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Frank, approached in the halls after the president's speech, shrugged off the incident.
But Clyburn was downright incredulous, saying he had not witnessed such treatment since he was leading civil rights protests in South Carolina in the 1960s.
"It was absolutely shocking to me," Clyburn said, in response to a question from the Huffington Post. "Last Monday, this past Monday, I stayed home to meet on the campus of Claflin University where fifty years ago as of last Monday... I led the first demonstrations in South Carolina, the sit ins... And quite frankly I heard some things today I have not heard since that day. I heard people saying things that I have not heard since March 15, 1960 when I was marching to try and get off the back of the bus."
"It doesn't make me nervous as all," the congressman said, when asked how the mob-like atmosphere made him feel. "In fact, as I said to one heckler, I am the hardest person in the world to intimidate, so they better go somewhere else."
Asked if he wanted an apology from the group of Republican lawmakers who had addressed the crowd and, in many ways, played on their worst fears of health care legislation, the Democratic Party, and the president, Clyburn replied:
"A lot of us have been saying for a long time that much of this, much of this is not about health care a all. And I think a lot of those people today demonstrated that this is not about health care... it is about trying to extend a basic fundamental right to people who are less powerful."
UPDATE 6:55 PM ET: Rep. Emanuel Cleaver's office released the following statement:
For many of the members of the CBC, like John Lewis and Emanuel Cleaver who worked in the civil rights movement, and for Mr. Frank who has struggled in the cause of equality, this is not the first time they have been spit on during turbulent times.
This afternoon, the Congressman was walking into the Capitol to vote, when one protester spat on him. The Congressman would like to thank the US Capitol Police officer who quickly escorted the others Members and him into the Capitol, and defused the tense situation with professionalism and care. After all the Members were safe, a full report was taken and the matter was handled by the US Capitol Police. The man who spat on the Congressman was arrested, but the Congressman has chosen not to press charges. He has left the matter with the Capitol Police.
This is not the first time the Congressman has been called the "n" word and certainly not the worst assault he has endured in his years fighting for equal rights for all Americans. That being said, he is disappointed that in the 21st century our national discourse has devolved to the point of name calling and spitting. He looks forward to taking a historic vote on health care reform legislation tomorrow, for the residents of the Fifth District of Missouri and for all Americans. He believes deeply that tomorrow's vote is, in fact, a vote for equality and to secure health care as a right for all. Our nation has a history of struggling each time we expand rights. Today's protests are no different, but the Congressman believes this is worth fighting for.
UPDATE 7:48 PM ET: The Buffalo News reports that Rep. Louise Slaughter's district office in Pine View, New York, was vandalized on Saturday.
Sometime early this morning, someone threw a brick through the front window of her Pine Avenue office.
The damage was discovered about 12:30 a.m., city police said.
The brick put a hole in the outer-most window at the office at 1910 Pine Ave., but did not damage a second interior window, police reported. A piece of broken brick believed to have caused the damage was found at the scene.
Damage was estimated at $350.
UPDATE 8:57 PM ET: The Associated Press reports that Capitol Police arrested the man who spit on Cleaver, but the Congressman won't press charges.

Arrest made over 'all black people leave' announcement at New Jersey Walmart
BY Larry Mcshane
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
A 16-year-old boy was busted for broadcasting a racist comment over the public address system of a Walmart in southern New Jersey, police said Saturday.
The youth - whose name was not released because of his age - was charged with harassment and bias intimidation for the incident last weekend in Washington Township.
The boy was released into the custody of his parents after his Friday arrest.
"This was an extremely disturbing event on many levels," said Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton. "Any statements like these that can cause harm or grave concern must be addressed as quickly as we can."
Authorities said it was unclear if the announcement was ad-libbed or premeditated and said they were investigating a second youth who accompanied the arrested teen to the store.
The incident drew national attention after a male voice came over the store's public address system last Sunday and calmly made the shocking announcement.
"Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now," the voice announced.
A manager quickly commandeering the microphone and made an apology, but outraged customers complained to store management.
Walmart officials condemned the incident, saying the behavior was "unacceptable."

Some stuff you can't make up!
Everyone hates everyone man we got it made.
We can thank the short-sighted right wing leadership for taking wedge issues to the extreme and fox for making it even worse.
This remark made me laugh in that last link;
LOL Palin is 'the other'.
so, you make something illegal you create a black market, what a surprise; when you have a black market, mobsters move in to take it over, whoda thunk - the u.s. could at least legalize hemp, but we are not going to do that because we would abrogate international treaties, the issue is deeper than a simple bill will address - what a mess.
what can you say about the swiss? every man of military age has a fully automatic assault rifle in the home, oh yeah, the swiss are about more than chocolate.
gays with guns? why not, looks like everybody else has guns, at least in switzerland.....
i think we should designate mccain and lieberman as enemy combatants, only this is not funny, this is really dangerous that any lawmaker would propose something like this.
as far as china goes, every corporation that chased low wages to china, in order to pump up profits, they are just as culpable, these things do not happen in a vacuum.....
as far as lies go, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and apparently their own facts also, look at the home school movement and the state of texas.
what a mess.
get accused of being a conspiracy theorist or something for saying this, but...
It could be that if the situation in Mexico gets bad enough, the Mexican government will ask the US government for military assistance, either tacitly or implicitly, which will in turn lead to a further degradation of the US-Mexico border, which will in turn further pave the way for the North American Union and the NAFTA supa-highway and so forth. Don't be surprised if we see a joint US-Canada-Mexico initiative to combat the "drug war."
are the ones that the MSM and the US government promulgate. Of course, since this is C&L, and this is not an Open Thread, let's leave the subject at this point, yes ??
But back to your conspiracy theory, BDM, and some further exploration of possibly related points ...
[A] the Military Commissions Act has provisions for (1) US troops going into Canada & Canadian troops going into the USA, (2) the complete suspension of civil rights in the USA, with the possibility of USA citizens being secretly held without charges and without legal counsel.
[B] the 2nd Edition of US Patriot Act, which allowed for a very broad definition of "domestic terrorist", including any public or private figure that merely publicly opposes government actions, including the extra-legal seizure of all their assets.
[C] the FISA / telecom immunity act, which not only allows the government to spy on all domestic communications without needing a search warrant, but also to incorporate any / all private enterprise data collection ( think CC and "store discount" cards ) and public records to build detailed dossiers on USA citizens ( think Adm. Poindexter's Total Information Awareness Project codified into law ).
These things don't sound particularly democratic in nature, do they? But look at just how many members of the Democratic Party in Congress voted for these measures. It defies rational explanation, short of adopting a theory widely expounded on the Internet that the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are today little more than 2 wings of the same Crony Corporatist State party.
What other rationale can tie in the very similar foreign policies of Bush_43 and Obama, or a common domestic policy tied to the Randian "Chicago Boys" Economic Model ( read "Shock Doctrine" ). Domestic austerity measures that throttle the FDR/LBJ "welfare state" in favor of unchecked unregulated capitalism and the nurturing of the MICC seem to be a common thread on both sides of the political isle these days. And back to your "war on drugs" meme as a unifying "rallying cry" between the USA, Canada, and Mexico -- from what we know of history, particularly the Roaring 20's and Prohibition, as well as the totally unscientific non-medical basis of this current Prohibition, what justification is there to continue this exercise in futility, beyond enhancing the total militarized control over a fearful enslaved population ??
This country needs a new revolution, of the proletariat -- of the populists. Hopefully, this will come at the ballot box, perhaps with the rise to prominence of viable 3rd political parties. One could hope for such a change to take place ...

Re McCain/Lieberman, all that's necessary is to *allege* someone is a terrorist. That includes political opponents, journalists, or people you just don't like. How can anyone know the difference between what the president suspects and what he just pretends to suspect?
Isn't this exactly what the paranoid Right go on about? They're going to arrest us, take our guns away, and lock us in concentration camps? Interesting that the ones proposing to do just that are a Republican and a Republican masquerading as an Independent.
These provisions are already codified into law -- between the new and improved US Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, and the FISA / Telecom Immunity Act. The only thing missing is the political will to follow through. I presume that that is what the latest McCain/Lieberman fascistic rants are all about.
[ I am reminded of the Bush_43 / FEC trial balloon floated during the summer of 2004 run-up to the November national elections that martial law needed to be declared, and the elections postponed indefinitely, all due to some perceived but undefined terrorist threats evolving. AFAIK, only a broad public protest averted this occurring ... but today, with an "alternate" political party in power, who knows ... ]
