WOW...
A poetic rebuke to historical manicheanism...
that's really good...
Gonna have to look that one up!
Israel's terrorism is the worst kind. It has been given a false legitimacy, a blind eye turned toward its actions by the US, along with protection via the US's security council veto. Israel's terrorism is as bad, if not worse, than the state terrorism the US backed and funded in Chile under Pinochet, Cuba under Batista, Pakistan under Al Haq, Indonesia under Suharto, Nicaragua under Somoza, South Africa under Apartheid, among dozens of others.
The worst part about Israeli terrorism is their employing of tactics and methods that jews were once victims of. The blockade of food, water and medical supplies is as abominable as the blockade of the Lodz Ghetto, and Israel's deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure (both now and in Lebanon during 2006) was declared a war crime, a crime against humanity, during the Nuremburg Trials. People have been convicted and some executed (Germany, Bosnia, Liberia, et al) for the very same actions Israel is guilty of performing now.
But just like George Putz and the neo-convicts, there is a strong possibility that the guilty will go unpunished because those who defend the terrorists want the crimes to happen.
the NYT? their cover stories today sucked.

“If you were alive, they would give you a loan. Actually, I think if you were dead, they would still give you a loan.”
Two comments:
First, I've always felt sorriest for WAMU's employees. As any long-time customer there knows, the strength of WAMU is its tellers and local branch workers. They work long hours, often thanklessly, and for low wages in their own communities. This is common among banks, but WAMU employees--at least where I have lived--offer a level of personal attention to me that other banks have not (except, possibly, Bank of Albuquerque in New Mexico, possibly the best customer service-based bank I've *ever* stepped into at any time). I know my tellers personally, and I was dismayed when WAMU had mismanaged itself to the point that being sold off to the behemoth of the East was the only way to save it. Now thousands of these customer service-oriented people will be lost to save J.P. Morgan a few bucks. Typical American use-em-up-and-spit-em-out short-sightedness. This will cost J.P. Morgan in the long term. But no one is thinking long-term, of course.
Second, regarding the above quote, WAMU lenders refused me a home loan in 2001--I was told I hadn't lived in the area long enough and didn't have enough evidence of a steady income to receive a loan--at *any* rate. As I was testing the market and not truly buying at the time, I was impressed that--at this branch, at least--no one was asleep at the switch. They were right. I didn't have the money to do what I was proposing to do. I'm glad they wouldn't do it. I couldn't have afforded it.
CNN, The Independent and The Guardian have reported that in the last SEVEN (7) YEARS, Hamas' rockets have killed less than 20 Israelis.
In less than 2 DAYS, Israel's bombardments have killed more than 300 Palestinian civilians.
THAT IS NOT SELF DEFENSE. THAT'S GENOCIDE.
Hamas has repeatedly stated that it's prepared to stop launching the home made rockets - which amount to fireworks compared to F16 warplanes - provided Israel complied with the provisions of the ceasefire agreement and lifted the siege off of Gaza's 1.5 MILLION residents. Israel repeatedly refused.
The latest reports from the BBC state that following Israel's threats to bomb the Gaza hospital, doctors and staff have evacuated the hospital

Dennis Kucinich Demands UN Inquiry on Gaza
"Dear Secretary General:
I write to you today with grave concern regarding the current Israeli airstrikes in Gaza as well as reports of an imminent ground attack. I call on the United Nations to establish an independent inquiry of Israel's war against Gaza.
I believe the attacks on civilians represent collective punishment, which is a violation of Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention[1]. The perpetrators of attacks against Israel must also be brought to justice; however Israel cannot create a war against an entire people in order to attempt to bring to justice the few who are responsible. The Israeli leaders know better. The world community, which has been very supportive of Israel's right to security and its right to survive, also has a right to expect Israel to conduct itself in adherence to the very laws which support the survival of Israel and every other nation.
As you know, since the commencement of aerial strikes, over 300 Palestinians have been killed and approximately 1,400 have been wounded. The dead include 20 children under the age of 16--nearly half of them killed while on a school bus--and 9 women. The attack aggravated a humanitarian crisis wrought by the Israeli-imposed blockade of food, fuel, and medical supplies.
Israel is leveling Gaza to strike at Hamas, just as they pulverized south Lebanon to strike at Hezbollah. Yet in both cases civilian populations were attacked, countless innocents killed or injured, infrastructure targeted and destroyed, and civil law enforcement negated. All this was, and is, disproportionate, indiscriminate mass violence in violation of international law. Israel is not exempt from international law and must be held accountable. I urge you to establish an independent inquiry immediately.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
/s/
Dennis J. Kucinich"
but did Dennis demand a UN enquiry on Iraq? I'm guessing he did but it's just a guess.
has to be the finest rhyming argument I've ever read. Very entertaining and persuasive.
Israel bombards innocent women and children, and the response from WARshington?
Blame the Palestinians for the deaths incurred by Israel using US military equipment. Ah yes, the good old political view. It isn't the rapist's fault, it was that woman!
Great mini-roundup on Gaza. Roy Edroso is sharp as ever, the verse on Huntington is quite brilliant, the Petrelis post shares a great anecdote, and I want to see Waltz with Bashir.
