Jeremy Scahill: Rep. Mike Pence, Who Led Witch Hunt Against Van Jones, Took $1000s From Extremist Erik Prince
Rep. Mike Pence has been on the forefront of pushing this Van Jones scandal created by Glenn Beck (good to see he gets his walking papers from such an impeccable source, isn't it?), calling for his resignation and saying that Jones' "extremist views and coarse rhetoric have no place in this Administration or the public debate."
But as Jeremy Scahill points out, Pence isn't bothered by the extremist views of Erik Prince of Blackwater/Xe, who has contributed thousands of dollars to Pence:
On Friday, Pence, who describes himself as “Christian, Conservative, Republican, in that order,” said Jones’s “extremist views and coarse rhetoric have no place in this administration or the public debate.” Beyond the obvious here (the hate-filled rhetoric we see every day from racist, right-wing wackos, including those in public office), it is an interesting comment considering that Pence is an extremist right-wing evangelical Christian who has taken thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Blackwater’s owner, Erik Prince. Prince has also donated to Pence’s Political Action Committee “Principles Exalt a Nation.” In December 2007, three months after Blackwater operatives gunned down 17 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad’s Nisour Square, Pence and his Republican Study Committee, which serves “the purpose of advancing a conservative social and economic agenda in the House of Representatives,” organized a gathering to welcome Prince to Washington. “Not only has Mr. Prince personally been targeted by partisan warfare repeatedly over the past months, but the use of contracting throughout the government has been under attack by this Congress,” Pence’s committee’s statement said. Should Pence resign for cavorting with and accepting campaign cash from a man who allegedly “views himself as a Christian crusader tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe,” in the words of a former employee?
I think it's time for the majority party to start acting like one. If Republican-controlled Congress could set aside time to debate condemning MoveOn.org for their Gen. "Betray Us" ad, then the Democratic-controlled Congress ought to be making sure that the double standard of IOKIYAR no longer stands.

Check out www.theyoungturks.com tomorrow to see Cenk collect his bet.
These guys at TYT should be on TV.
Time for Obama's Justice Dept to expose these Traitors under Bush's Patriot Act.
The Southern successionists want a civil war, the Christo-fascists want to be raptured and every republican wants his hand in American's pockets.
Time to grow a pair Mr. President and crack some heads.
He said Bush "sounded like a crackhead when he..." She states that "he called Bush a crackhead." No, he did not. Is "sounds like" equivalent to "is?" Only in the world of opportunistic liars.
he did call him a crackhead I don't think that rises to the same level of all the people that have called Obama a nazi.
Isn't that why he was called "Chimpy McCokespoon" ?
We can never out talk these people, as the truth is not in them. At least as far as the stupid people are concerned. Let them have Fox. At least that will keep them busy most of the time.
C'mon, y'all know sometimes Dubya DID sound like a crack-head!
That was just funny.
I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all
He was a crackhead. Nothing to see here. Move along.

For witch hunt to be a valid allegory there would have to be a clear victim losing their rights, and likely their life and/or freedom from what amounts to mob violence.

So this guy Van would have helped to form our national energy policy? I have no problem with that especially since he recognized our addiction to oil in that clip better than bush ever did.
Remember what we got to hear about Cheney's energy policy formation committee?
Oh yeah, that's right. We don't even know who they were because they're names are a secret.
Why Fox why?
I'm really hoping that Van Jones can focus on exposing idiots like Pence, Beck, Hannity, and all the other right wing haters. I think he'd probably be very good at it, and this is something that is sorely needed. That's one thing repugs and conservatives are good at.....spreading lies and attacking their opponents. We need someone who can focus on doing this and make these jackasses a national issue.
Any ideas about implementing this action?
I'm thinking about how to do it, Savannah. These people really make me sick. Something needs to be done to stop their lies and hate.
The thing about them is, my parents raised us not to hate anyone, but with the crap and lies and hate that these right wingers themselves spread, I cannot help the hatred I feel. They're destroying this country; they're destroying humanity in this country.
Use me.
my post at 19:25...........you and the General can be the first lion trainers.......:)
I've been to the Colosseum a couple of times...cool place. Send me there with Savannah and lions, and we'll tear those right wingers up!

so if you are expecting to have a public career...be careful what you sign
administration. Unless they slipped one in behind my back. And perhaps he wasn't even thinking about a public career when he signed the petition. WTF difference SHOULD it make? Is he an honorable person? If the answer is, "yes," well that's why he had to resign.
I guess I'd never make it in a public career with the things I sign, emails I send out, and comments I make on blogs!
Well lessee, I'm an ex-Mormon, former Air Force Top Secret Clearance, belong to two Vampire groups (scholars), have a subscription to a Socialist newspaper, belong to Church of the Subgenius, with a love for kink, former alcoholic and drug user and into Wicca for more decades than I care to admit to....
Oh yeah...that'll work...
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
I'd vote for you!
Vampire "scholars"?
I went to a Jesuit high school and had an Ancient History teacher, Father Pieper, who used to call all his students "scholars." You'd raise your hand to answer a question, and he wouldn't call you by your rightful name....just would say, "Yes, scholar!"
Mostly professors in Gothic studies. One of them is headquartered in Romania, and our group help spearhead the effort against building a Dracula theme park in Tisighora, the birthplace of Vladislaus Dracula in approximately 1431.
My branch is in Canada, so it's long distance. They like to print my reviews of vampire theme movies, my vampire theme cartoons, and some mythical observations, but I guess otherwise I lack credentials for the more serious articles, although I have extensive knowledge of gothic literature, vampire legends from around the world, and of course the biographies of the Wallachian Warlord and Bela Lugosi.

of the horrible things Van Johnson said, such as going green in the cities should start with going green in the ghetto and calling republicans assholes. And, OMG, he signed a petition and participated in a rally questioning the office 9/11 story. A very dangerous communist for sure.
Can anyone say Joseph McCarthy?
And frankly, Van Johnson was wrong to call the republicans assholes because he was incorrect. He should have called them fascists.

or does anyone else think this Congress is cowardly in their lack of telling the Republicans to shove it. Eight years the Dems couldn't say a word that mattered, now they can and don't. What IS the problem?
that Erik Prince and his blood money are involved in this. *snark*

..."Seeing as how you're comfortable taking money from Erik Prince, how do you feel about the revelations of rampant wife-swapping going on at the Blackwater campus? Do you condone it? Are you involved? Will you give the money back, considering the 'anti-family' nature of the source?"
You can say FU in the Senate Chambers if you're a rethug, you can kill as many people in a war or coming across a border if you're a rethug, you can lie, cheat, steal from anyone including your wife, if you are rethug. But say A((hol# and you get fired.
Democrats, get a spine and stand up before it's too late. The rethugs are winning without even trying.
Unfortunately, the powers of darkness; FOX News, right wing radio, and conservative astro-turf organizations have no conscience about lying to the American public. They wage war against the liberals as if their life depended on it while the rest of the media still think that this is a civilized debate. Their is nothing civilized about Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly or Shawn Hannity. That includes Mike Pence. As long as he is unwilling to tell the truth and act with honor, he should be held accountable. But who in the media or the government has the ability and the will to do so?

"On Friday, Pence, who describes himself as “Christian, Conservative, Republican, in that order..."
Meant to say; "Douchebag, Hypocrite, Christian, Conservative, Republican, in that order..."
Redundant me thinks.
He should have known what he was signing; however,
birthers should know that they''re claims are unfounded.
So, how come they aren't resigning?
NO, Van Jones did nothing evil. Now squelching our Constitutional rights, broadly spying on Americans, authorizing illegal torture -- that's all good patriotic stuff to Fox and Pence, obviously).
Jones was simply being honest. Anyone with a brain can see that the investigation of 9-11 was botched at best, and that there needs to be a new and independent, science-based investigation. Signing a petition to establish simple clean justice is only sane.
And he was also right on this: some Republicans (and Democrats) ARE a$$wholes - if by that he meant something along the lines of sociopathic, deceitful, fascistic scumbags. But if he can use one word to say it all, why waste time on details?
was simply asking for a commission to investigate 9/11 initially. At the time, the Bush administration didn't want to do that at all.
The fact that the petition was started by truthers wasn't readily apparent.
Now, that's not to say that we shouldn't have a second, and more honest appraisal, of the events that day, since I agree with you that anyone with a brain can see the official story has major loopholes, but that's not what the petition Jones signed was for.
Thanks for correction, Nicole. I didn't realize it was the initial petition he is being castigated for having signed. Even more shocking.
That must have been the petition started by the surviving WTC families, the one that finally got G.W.Bush -- hundreds of days after the attacks -- to assign insider Henry Kissinger to head (more likely to head-off) an 'investigation'?
Still, does it really matter when Van Jones signed a petition calling for an investigation? The fact is, the Bush Misadministration has been shown to be criminal on so many matters, that any peep of disbelief in their spotlessness, any question leading toward fuller understanding of truth about anything, is met with widespread smears of anti-Americanism from the paranoid right. Recall the revelations at Abu Ghraib. Even with photos depicting the horrors, we were told it was nothing but trifling pranks instigated by a few bad apples -- not to worry. Cheney's energy task force meetings? -- nothing to see.
A transparent look at those long eight years would probably be more shocking by far than even our suspicions could gauge, but I would be happier to find out Bush and company weren't such monsters. The only way to clear them though is to be 'anti-American' and persist in calling for real investigations of their questionable "accomplishments". And let them gloat in their innocence if proven.
Question outcomes because of who initially raised the question is called Argumentum ad Geneseon.
There's a lot of bovine excreta around the question of what happened on 9-11, however, according to John Dean's book, Worse Than Watergate, as you said boosh initially opposed the 9-11 commission BUT then placed his own choices in important seats of the commission who then voted to limit the investigation to events prior to 9-11, but not after, like the mishandling of evidence to lead to war, against a 3rd party who played no part.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
as upset about the Palin family's secesionist group as they about this nonsense? Isn't seceeding from America worse than thinking the Cons had something to do with 9/11?
Nicole, 'walking papers' and 'marching orders' aren't the same thing. Solid article though.
We, the people, can bitch, moan and complain all we want and it will not make one penny's difference. Look anywhere on the web and you'll find an over abundance of sites that do nothing but reveal right wing lies and treachery. Go to the comments section of those sites, as with right here at Crooks and Liars, and there is no shortage of rage, frustration, expressions of betrayal by the Obama Administration, and rightly so. We share our heartfelt feelings with each other day and night. On and on. If you want to know how progressives and liberals (I still can't figure out the difference between these two) really feel about the current environment just find the comments section on any liberal blog. Recently, you will also find a curious uptick in right wing, conservative, extremist viewpoints mixed in as well.
Those are devilishly worded in such a way as to infuriate, divide and muddle the debate going on at the moment, with disappointing success. Personally I feel simply ignoring those obvious plants rather than replying with a off topic angry rebuttal would be very effective at dwindling their increasing numbers. I took notice on several of the comment sections of liberal blogs and articles about the right wing orchestrated Van Jones non-flap. I found that the infiltration of what I call "Planted Comments" almost equaled comments made by people expressing thoughtful views, pro and con, but none the less attempted to be constructive. Every time a "planted" comment would appear, it was replied to by infuriated liberals so often it took away from any semblance of the intended debate, over and over again. Objective achieved.
But more to the point, all this is occurring amongst ourselves. The true level of liberal outrage goes no further than the comments section and maybe a few hundred emails from the more activist of us to congresspersons, advertisers, etc. It's the classic "Choir singing to the choir" along with the arguably minimal effect of those emails. The truth in the basis of our outrage does not go out to the millions of ordinary people we want to think we are reaching. Hoping then that the simple logic and rationale of our argument will have an impact against the onslaught of the "Twilight Zone" trash being widely spoken, written and broadcast by an unfair, dishonest mainstream media. You know, the media that actually is consumed and believed by the unintellectual, incurious masses. The truth of the matter is the liberal/progressive argument has almost no effect and the obvious reason is no one knows anything about our side of the debate,as least not any true or accurate presentation.
Until we figure out a way to weasel in on the locked and blocked public discourse that is now dominated completely by deranged talkshow hosts, lying corrupt politicians and compliant interviewers, we will get nowhere with a progressive agenda. Nothing will be "changed." And finally we will loose our best opportunity to restore America to sanity, fairness and actual accountability for those that would destroy everything and anything to advance their narrow corporate and political playbook. A playbook that doesn't happen to include anything but gross enrichment and one-sided power grabs. A playbook that makes further erosion of the democratic process necessary to succeed. Civil liberties have also proven to be a petty obstacle to obliterate.
Our voice is missing as part of a fair and equal agreement. As part of the intended equation of factors involved in our democracy. As admirably and hard as Crooks and Liars and so many other web sites try to make meaningful change and broadly effective differences in our crumbling existence, it is not enough to tilt the scales in favor of truth, honesty and a just and fair outcome. We have to do more to crack the stranglehold on truth and justice that the titans of "The Mainstream Media" have stolen from America. And we must finally realize and accept the "Whatever it Takes" cornerstone attitude will work for the good guys as well. It seems to have come to that. So be it!
I agree that there has been serious erosion of our liberties and sensibilities from the high tide of the Fox-style ignorance that illiterates bathe in each day. But I must disagree about preaching - or singing - to the choir. Truth, matter how or where it is told, is contagious (more so than a lie to the thinking person), and the choir grows. In fact, those lies motivate people like ourselves who can no longer stand silent.
And exactly where would some of us be if we didn't have the good dedicated folks at C&L helping pull back the curtain for those of us in the choir? How much weaker and small would this choir be? MSM is now in the business of quoting blogs. Let's not forget the power of what we have, and the reason Fox is so transparent to us, with facts and numbers to back us up.
Yes, we will have to sing far louder - and in different places - to be heard outside our church (odd metaphor for me to use, being of no church), but we don't want to become what we revile. Our burgeoning voices will finally trump without having to rely on the desperation of "whatever it takes". Own the truth and you own power.
Scahill is becoming one of our better "investigative" journalists, a redundancy since investigating is what a good journalist does. I quit reading Matt Taibi of Rolling Stone when he became a bit too shrill. He was amusing at first, but his rants now sound sometimes childish. Scahill nailed the Blackwater story and made it his own, and like any good journalist he's following up on the trails, wherever they lead. I just hope the special prosecutor is taking note of the same outrages.
"Respect for the rights of others is peace." --Benito Juarez
Dean's scream, Kuchinich's UFO and now the Jones crack head remark. The President with the largest congressional majority in a generation has just dumped what is probably his only liberal appointee to mollify the feigned outrage of right wing partisans. If they didn't own him before, they definitely do now. Game over.
