Napolitano Nominated To Homeland Security Department

"Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) has been chosen to serve as secretary of the vast and troubled Department of Homeland Security for President-elect Obama," Politico's Mike Allen reported late Wednesday night. "Napolitano is a border governor who will now be responsible for immigration policy and border security, which are part of Homeland Security's myriad functions."
Napolitano has been a big Obama booster through out his campaign. Here she is, introducing Obama in September:

Someone told me they saw our family's in the Edinburg museum but I've never been there.
According to our geneology when the Stewart's took over Scotland they made everyone use their tartan, but not our family. No explanation was given other than they "respected" us. It's possible we never had one of our own.
Too bad better records weren't kept back then.
Our family was ejected from Scotland and lost any estates with the other border guard families when the traitor King James VI (King James I of England),united the two countries and no longer needed border guards. The border guards were considered crazy and violent at the time, and a power unto themselves. My family was connected to the river Tweed, so of course there were legends we were a family of river fairies from that site.

Other border guard families included the Armstrongs and the Nixons, but I don't know how many their were.

They were Scottish rebels trying to bring back the Roman Catholic King James VII (England James II), in the Glorious Revolution, about 100 years before our own.
Afterwards English forces loyal to King William of Orange outlawed kilts, tartans, bagpipes and executed on the spot any Scot who spoke Gaelic in front of them. Men would be dragged out of their homes in front of wife and kids and summarily executed for little more than suspicion. The Irish were lucky if they spoke Gaelic they were just punched around.

for a few years when I had a home in Arizona. She ran the State well and she initiated a system where you couldn't get your DL unless your SSA # and all that info jelled. She also took care of her constituency, she gave everyone over 65 a card that gave almost Free Rx. And I won't even go to where the roads in that State are some of the best in the country ... (ooops, guess I just went there)
I think she is a fine choice.

It has to be in-depth and flexible, as well as fail-safe. We've heard nothing for the past eight years except how we have to spy more to catch the magic phone call from the hidden Muslim radical to his bosses in Iraq. What we need is security that works efficiently even if we don't overhear a given call or intercept an e-mail.
And we have to start being sensible. How is a 3 oz. limit on liquids going to stop a terrorist plot? If it's dangerous above 3 oz., isn't it at least hazardous at 3 oz. or below?
How does a no-fly list and intensive screening work when we're ready to sell access to an 'expedited' line for $100/year? Does it make sense that, once screened, a passenger remains 'clear' forever?
We have to stop security 'theater' - sometimes a blinking LED is just a blinking LED, and a chalk arrow nothing more than a chalk arrow. (Do we really think terrorists are going to leave piles of weaponized material lying around and draw chalk arrows pointing to 'em?)
As much as I like her, I think it is a bad choice... only because it will leaves us here in the desert with a raving madwoman Jan Brewer (R-Psycho) in charge.
Other than that she is very capable and is an excellent choice.

Last polling I saw had her 10 points ahead of McCain in a senate race. Seems to me we could pick from a state that wouldn't cost us a seat in the senate provided this polling were to hold. Especially unseating McCain would be real prize.
I say pick someone else who's qualified for this reason alone.
I think the name "Homeland Security" is so Un-American.
I much better prefer renaming the department "Civil Defense". Civil Defense was the organization used to watch the coastline for possible attack during WW2. Civil Defense sounds much more democratic.
Also, while we're at it, the Defense Department should be renamed "Department of the Armed Forces" or "Armed Forces Department". The Defense Department's major objective is holding up the Free World's Empire -- a job that requires both Offensive and Defensive operations.
Both of these organizations are bloated corporate pork barrel operations. They need to be trimmed and dissected.
They are unconstitutional and illegitimate, regardless of what you call it. Fascism by any name is still fascism. Do you really think a catchy name is important. We need to restore the Constitution and get rid of the federal Establishment.
