Sarah Palin Was FOR Socialized Medicine Before She Was Against It--At Least For Her Family
Sadly, the larger meaning of this is completely lost on her fans:

The vocal opponent of health-care reform in the U.S. steered largely clear of the topic except to reveal a tidbit about her life growing up not far from Whitehorse.
“We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada,” she said. “And I think now, isn't that ironic?”
Well yes, Sarah, you could call it "ironic" that you feel no compunction about running across the border to avail yourself of the health care you fight and lie and propagandize against to keep your fellow Americans from enjoying. Or you could call it "grossly hypocritical." However, I prefer to think of it as "brainlessly missing the picture" and hoping to take a bunch a tea baggers down with you. If we indeed had "the best health care system in the world", why would anyone go to Canada?
Because it was free? Because you didn't need to decide whether the need for a doctor was important enough to pay the associated costs, even if it meant forgoing a few meals or a payment elsewhere? Because you felt you had a RIGHT to good health and the Canadian government agreed that it is in everyone's best interest?
Was the socialized medicine safety net of Canada frightening? Of course not. It was a social service that Palin used when she needed...even though she presumably paid no taxes into the Canadian system (remember how important it was to the GOP to make sure illegal immigrants couldn't milk the system).
But will any one of her fans or the nut case tea-baggers screaming about how Obama wants to turn us into some socialist state ever put two and two together and realize it's something we should aspire to?
Of course not.

Where I live, on the east coast, when we receive care at a hospital, we have to produce our Medicare cards. I don't know if that's the case in the Yukon Territory, where Palin supposedly went, but I would think that would be standard practice across the country.

The Federal government collects taxes country-wide, then distributes the funds to the provinces based on population and need (sparsely populated regions need stuff like air ambulances.)
I'm in Ontario, and the provincial government here issued us all shiny new health cards about ten years ago, with holographic security and magnetic strips. Hospitals in places that were near the border and close to US population centers (Windsor and Sault Ste. Marie, significantly) were getting hit pretty hard before then.

Skagway is about 90 air miles from Whitehorse, Yukon. You can drive there on a good paved highway now. There is an amazing, must see scenic railway from Whitehorse to Skagway build in the 1890's. Beautiful little town. Back in those days before the road, people in Skagway would take the train to Whitehorse for shopping and to see the doctor or dentist. Whitehorse is a bigger town with better facilities. Alaska and the Yukon had deals in place to cover this shared health care. It was common and no big deal. Our health care in the Yukon is excellent. People still come to Whitehorse today for the same reason. Skagway and Haines people are good neighbors. I go there at least a few times a year. Fresh crab and shrimp.
I see Palin also has several different versions of this story. I'm sad that the oil barons of Alberta paid her for a speaking engagement. She was suppose to do the same in Ontario but people rose up in outrage and it was cancelled. Most Alaskan can't stand her at all now and don't want her back.
My mom and grandmother live in a "active seniors" community in San Diego county and their community set up a weekly bus trip over the border to Mexico to enable the seniors to go buy their prescription medicines far more affordably than they get on Medicare.
But then again, I'm a proponent of a fully socialized health care system after living in Europe and seeing how beautifully it worked.
but I suspect Alberta is the only place in Canada Palin could draw a crowd that wasn't armed with rotten produce.

but universal care in provinces predated that. Doctor fees took longer to bring into the system in 1984.

Let’s not forget that Sarah’s husband Todd, and all of their children, and grandchild (or possibly grandchildren) are on socialized medicine even today by their claim to Native Alaskan heritage. I guess Todd has one drop of Native Alaskan blood, the children have ½ drop each, and the grandchild (grandchildren) must have at least ¼ drop.

My mother died in Havre Montana in June of 1991. While she lay gravely ill, a man from Medicine Hat Alberta lay in the room adjacent to hers. While my family and his family waited in the waiting room, his family had made a call to the hospital in Medicine Hat and the Canadian system immediately dispatched an air ambulance to Havre to transport him to the Hat for care. His family was not only worried about his condition, but the costs associated with his having the misfortune of having a heart attack in the states where the medical bills could and would bankrupt them.
What is ironic is that cases such as this were never brought up during the so called healthcare debate. That Canadians, French, and English were not interviewed to see how they liked the care they received. That Michael Moore was not asked to testify before congress and particularly the senate finance (?) committee. Why did Americans stand by and do nothing when other countries solved all these issues decades ago and none of them have opted to go back to "the way it was".
Why wasn't it explained to Americans that yes, their taxes may go up a little, but the additional costs would be MORE THAN OFFSET by the savings in healthcare premiums and that bottom line, they would have more money "in their pockets" as a result?
WHY! WHY! WHY! One word .... GREED! The insurance industry is greedy, and American politicians like Baucus, Conrad, Bayh are corrupt to the core of their rotten fucking soles! And perhaps we Americans are simply too damned ignorant to hit the streets, throw rocks, and scream at the tops of our lungs about the injustice, the lies, the rich getting richer at our expense.

Canada didn't have subsidized health care in the early 60's. And even if they did the Heaths would not have gotten it as they were not Canadian citizens.
However Palin has told two versions of the same story in one the burned foot goes to Whitehorse in Canada, in the other it goes to Juneau.
Papa Heath says they went to Whitehorse in Canada it was closer.
Still the other version is lie 1001 for Sarah.
And Todd and the kids and grand kids do have socialist Alaskan health care and Sarah probably has it as a retirement benifit from the Governorship.
