Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread
By Nicole Belle Sunday May 17, 2009 4:00amStealers Wheel - Stuck In The Middle With You
If it's Sunday, it's Republican spin day on the news shows. Holy deity of your choice, is this a gruesome line-up or what? Almost like we didn't have an election in November. On what Planet Bizarro do we live that Liz Cheney and former McCain campaign advisor Steve Schmidt have anything constructive to add to the national dialogue? Could someone tell the people at This Week that it might be nice to not have to look at these losers over and over? And could we get any less balance to discuss President Obama's commencement address at Notre Dame University than have the Notre Dame Professor of Theology and a Notre Dame Right-to-Life student on FoxNews Sunday and State of the Union respectively? Nevermind that David Gregory's ratings are in the toilet, the main event: DNC chair Tim Kaine vs. RNC chair Michael Steele on Meet the Press. Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right...
ABC's "This Week" - Sens. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., and Jim Webb, D-Va.; Republican strategist Liz Cheney, daughter to former Vice President Dick Cheney; Steve Schmidt, adviser to John McCain for the 2008 presidential election.
CBS' "Face the Nation" - Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union; Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.
NBC's "Meet the Press" - Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, Democratic National Committee chairman; Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.
NBC's "The Chris Matthews Show" - Panel: Savannah Guthrie, Howard Fineman, Andrew Sullivan, Michele Norris. Topics: Why has Dick Cheney become so vocal against President Obama's policies? In the Supreme Court pick, is it more important for President Obama to make [sic]. Meter Questions: Has Dick Cheney influenced President Obama's national security policy decisions? YES: 4 NO: 8; Can Obama keep Pakistan's government in power? YES: 2 No: 10
CNN's "State of the Union" - White House Budget Director Peter Orszag; Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio; Emily Toates, student at Notre Dame and member of "Right to Life" group.
CNN's "Reliable Sources" - Hollywood edition with Mariel Hemingway and Barry Levinson.
CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS" - An exclusive interview with former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. If Pakistan and Afghanistan are the biggest global stories of the moment (and they are), the man who can shed the most light on them is surely Pervez Musharraf - the man who resigned from power in Pakistan just nine months ago
"Fox News Sunday" - Rev. Richard McBrien, professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame; Rev. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life; Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
Sigh. So what's catching your eye this morning?

My wife just suprised me with the Lovejoy Season #2.
Lovejoy was a fantastic show. Season 1 was 1985, Season 2 was 1990, and on.
Season #5 was just released on DVD.
Much better than the blowfish on Sunday talkies.
Fr. McBrien is a liberal, a regular contributor to NCR, and a pain in the side of the powers that be at ND.
The "Right" on todays shows may be a bit more "Right" than usual, but there does seem to be at least one Dem on nearly every show this week, and we've had worse weeks to be sure.
"A bit more right than usual" would be 100% right wing!
Let's not forget that according to the republicans and conservatives that dominate the media......the media is liberal.
And if it's really true that the media is liberal then why are these shows always running an 80% to 90% lineup of conservative right wing talking heads?
This is why I don't watch or listen to mainstream media....It's so one sided as to make the opposing point of view seem ridiculous.
Lots of talk already on all networks about anti-Obama protesters at Notre Dame.
Forget the fact that it was for political rather than security reasons that the Secret Service was under orders to keep Bush protestors miles away from every single event Bush attended for eight straight years. Also forget the fact that the media rarely considered interviewing Bush protestors and reporting them as news. Yet this Notre Dame story has been front and center for weeks -- left and right leaning press alike.
As is the usual case, we get all the news print to fit.
Where's Peggy "I'd walk on by Auschwitz" Noonan?
Guess she's up next Sunday.
Do you have to have a white collar to be pro-life?
I'm for less abortions AND no conservative wars. And for not bashing gay people on the side.
What color collar should I be wearing? Certainly not a white one it would seem.
Try a studded leather dog collar. :)
I have, more than once. But that's a topic for another thread and probably not on C&L:)
In 2005, "grants from the federal government represent nearly two-thirds of Notre Dame's research support." It's likely higher now.
http://al.nd.edu/about-arts-and-letters/news/...
So, the case being made by the opponents of Obama speaking there is that Notre Dame is first a religious institution and then educational. So why all the Federal dollars?
Because religion wants it both ways. Dabble in the government while not having to pay taxes and getting federal dollars.
I couldn't agree more! When I came out of Mass in late October 2004 and saw anti-Kerry/pro Bush flyers on all the cars in the parking lot, that was it for me.
Stop preaching politics from the pulpit, seperate Religion from Politics, or pay freaking taxes!
Period!
We need to break up the media monopolies. This weekly brainwashing by the corporate media is shameless, bad for the country, and getting really old.
On FnS, Wallace asked Father Pavone, leading the Obama protest at Notre Dame, that they didn't protest Bush who, as Gov of Tx, executed over 180 prisoners (Pavone defended himself claiming how babies are "crushed and discarded").
Shocked me too to hear the question.
Addendum: Supporter Father McBrien says, "If we required 100% adherence to all Catholic teachings of every speaker, no one would speak here." (later calls the "Pro-Life" group "really Pro-Birth".)
they'd add 'except Henry Lee Lucas' along with that 180 prisoner factoid for Bush executions
Is that the default title they give to guests who really have no reason to be on these shows in the first place? I mean, really, Liz Cheney?? McCain campaign advisor Steve Schmidt?? (they did break the news to ol' steve that his guy lost, didn't they?). WTF?
The good thing about the title "Republican Strategist" is that at least it's more honest than the other title most frequently used by these darlings of the media: "Political Analyst." BTW, "Political Analyst" is the title Rove now uses in his official bio.
McConnell asks "What's the point" of going back and looking into whether it's Pelosi or the CIA that is lying.
When Wallace asks McConnell about him threatening "the nuclear option" in 2005 over Bush's SC nominees, saying "regardless of Party, a Presidents' nominees deserve an up or down vote."
McConnell defends his hypocrisy with: since his advice was rejected by Congress, it's okay for him to be a hypocrite on Obama's nominees today.
McConnell tells Wallace that he opposes public health insurance because "it would require a massive Tax increase to pay for it." (part of his explanation why he opposes the use of Budget Reconcilliation to pass it.)
Complete nonsense.
Wallace to Hume: "Is Obama's (decisions on tribunals, etc) 'vindicating' the Bush White House 'War on Terror'?"
Hume: "Of course! How can you see it any other way?"
I mean really? why is she even here? And please someone answer this for me. Why was it when wanda sykes joked about rush limbaugh being strungout everyone said it was too far, but liz cheney goes on an interview and says obama is siding with the terrorists and not fucking peep is uttered?
On 55th anniversary of "Brown vs. Board of Education", Michael Steel protests Obama's call for an "empathetic" judge that "doesn't apply the law."
Uh, Michael, the JOB of the SC is to "interpret" whether or not a law is fair. By the time a case comes to the SC, the efficacy of the law itself is in question, so to say he wants a Court that "strictly applies the law" shows someone with no clue what the job of the Supreme Court is.
The drummer from Stealers Wheel joined the Strawbs, and still plays with the Strawbs to this day, AFAIK.
At every opportunity, every time he is asked a question, Peter King on FtN with Anthony Romero of the ACLU, ends every comment (literally) with an attack on the ACLU, accusing them of "Attacking the United States".
Meet The Press et al. would be MUCH more exciting if NBC would fire the likes David Gregory and ABC terminate George Stephanopuolos, then dig up Joe Pine, George Putnum, or Willim F. Buckley Jr., and pile their remains on the desk.
"This Week" again loses major points in credibility and I’m about to squelch it entirely.
I can tolerate pundits with an agenda, but I can't tolerate political insiders like Liz Cheney with an agenda masquerading as a pundit.
anyone heard how many babies the president has killed? If he is running around the country doing this, he's awfully busy.
I just heard Bill Bennett claim that he has an honorary degree from Notre Dame. So that goes to show the worth of an honorary degree.
Okay, I'm officially in Bizarro World.
I just heard George Will defend the Liberal position on our ability to safely imprison convicted terrorists in "Super Max" prisons inside the U.S..
Wow.
.
On FUXNEWS this morning they had somebody subbing for Juan Williams who looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Jennifer (Mc)Loven from AP was her name. And then they had Nina (Morning Drain) Easton on for Mara who essentially torpedoed any semblance of balance. This was the highly refined essence of Fox at its ultimate purity.
David Gregory asks Michael Steele if Obama was mocking him. Hilarious:
http://www.gotchamediablog.com/2009/05/was-obama-mocking-of-michael-steele.html
ever.
And the riff is ripped off by Sheryl Crowe in "All I Wanna Do (Is Have Some Fun)"
Yep, love this song....but every time I hear it, can't help but think of Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen) in "Reservoir Dogs!"
Why is anyone talking to Liz Cheney? I would guess that This Week could book anyone they want to be on their panel. Why in the hell does Liz Cheney get to contribute? This again proves how uninterested these shows are in having an honest debate about say, TORTURE! The MSM coverage of this issue is driving me insane! Let Hannity interview Liz....
Who watches these shows on-air nowadays?
I can only think of three:
Nasal Cannula
Walker w/tennis balls
and
Cortical Ossification
(Yeah, I'm mean. I'm also a not very nice Liberal)
Recently when I watch the Sunday Morning Babbleheads, I have the
guilty feeling that I'm doing so for the same reason that causes
people to stare as they drive past a particularly nasty traffic
collision. Republicans appearing on these shows put me in mind
of "Mondo Cane".
That said, I am a HUGE fan of the service C&L does for us all by distilling the idiocy of the right into heaping spoonfuls of political Vegemite.
Catching my eye?

A quote from the same guy;
Washington, May 14 - Speaking on a Supplemental Appropriations bill that would continue to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today made the following statement:
“America went to war against Iraq based on a lie. We were told back in 2002 that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. The previous administration even pursued torture to try to extract false confessions in order to justify the war. It is time to tell the truth. The truth is we should not have prosecuted a war against the Iraqi people. The truth is the Democratic Senate could have stopped the Iraq war in 2002. The truth is we Democrats were given control of Congress in 2006 to end the war. The truth is this bill continues a disastrous war, which has cost the lives of thousands of our soldiers. The truth is the occupation has fueled the insurgency. The truth is the Iraq war will cost the American and the Iraqi people trillions of dollars and as many as a million innocent Iraqis have lost their lives as a result of this war.
“Don’t tell the American people that you are ending the war by continuing to fund the war. Don’t tell the American people that the war will end when their plans leave 50, 000 troops in Iraq. Don’t tell the American people that the way out of Afghanistan is to escalate our presence.
“Get out of Iraq. Get out Afghanistan. Come home America.”

The "Kooch" !!
Hr. 2424, is catching my eye also. He did a few other little ity bity insignificant, irrelevant things recently too.
He is right again!
ps. Drydiggins,
I know a gal, Ima Doofus, who watches the Sunday talkies, religiously. BTW, 98.2% of American's with televisions do not watch the talkies, as they have other things to do.on Sunday mornings. I among them.
