Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread

Sally Field's 1985 Oscar acceptance speech

Wouldn't it have been great to live in a country that celebrates the achievements of its members? One where we could all tear up at realizing that the world likes us, right now, it likes us again?

Alas, 'tis not to be. We're too busy tearing people down--Obama doesn't deserve the NPP, there are still people dying in Afghanistan (never mind that there are still people dying in Israel and Palestine, some 15 years after Arafat, Peres and Rabin jointly won; or that people were still dying in Vietnam when Kissinger won 1973; or that South Africa still had 10 more years of apartheid after Tutu won in 1984.) I'm not sure why our collective memories are so short that we have forgotten (or maybe the media just doesn't want us to remember) that the Nobel Peace Prize is rarely awarded for results, but to congratulate a person who has suggested a new path towards world peace and strengthen international diplomacy.

Those paths don't always come to fruition--see Arafat, et al., above...or Wilson's award for creating the League of Nations, but it is the intent, the choice not to do business the same old way that gets credit with the Nobel committee.

Obama's Nobel is sure to be a major topic on all the shows. As is foreign policy, which makes sense, given the reasoning behind Obama's award. We also have a brand new Sunday show debuting on CNN: Amanpour, with Christiane Amanpour (2:00 pm Eastern/11:00 am Pacific). She's landed some seriously big names for her first program: Hillary Clinton and Robert Gates. McCain Mini-Me Lindsey Graham is on Meet the Press, along with Gen. Barry McCaffrey. Gosh, I wonder what they're going to advocate. DiFi and Saxby Chambliss are on This Week, to discuss Afghanistan and how extremely disconcerting it is to have a POTUS who actually thinks first and decides later. Don't miss the round table, which will feature Arianna Huffington and Nicole Wallace. I guess TW's Exec. Producer listened to me about getting on a liberal blogger. And finally, I don't want anyone to worry that they're going to miss John McCain on a Sunday show. Mr. Also-Ran is on State of the Union, alongside Debbie Stabenow and Bob Casey.

ABC's "This Week" - Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga.; Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass.; retired Army Gen. Jack Keane.

CBS' "Face the Nation" - Sens. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Jack Reed, D-R.I.

NBC's "Meet the Press" - Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Lindsay Graham, R-S.C.; retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey; retired Gen. Richard Myers, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

NBC's "The Chris Matthews Show" - Panel: Clarence Page, Gloria Borger, Andrea Mitchell and David Ignatius. Topics: Has Obama stalled in his ability to achieve major accomplishments this year? What does the David Letterman case say about what is scandalous nowadays? Meter Question: Is concern that President Obama has stalled more perception than reality? YES: 8 NO: 4.

CNN's "State of the Union" - Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and Bob Casey, D-Pa.; Anita Dunn, White House communications director; Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS" - 8 years of war in Afghanistan - what are President Obama's options? Fareed speaks with an expert panel and the Pakistani ambassador to the U-S. Plus, does the diamond business deserve its dirty reputation?

CNN's "Amanpour" - "Power & Persuasion" U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates join Christiane Amanpour for an exclusive roundtable discussion, looking at global challenges.

"Fox News Sunday" - Wynn Resorts Ltd. CEO Steve Wynn; Govs. Jennifer Granholm, D-Mich., and Mitch Daniels, R-Ind.

So, what's catching your eye this morning?

We have 3 plecktos and one actually likes to be rubbed on his back. These are alge eaters that are very smart. when I feed the other fish, they swim upside down on the top of the water and get some of the fish flakes.

I have no idea what you said in your comment but I did get the part about tracks from the 80s. That sounds like it could be fun.

Those little piggy fish that swim upside down to get the food first is amazingly cool. Smart little rascals.

We have 3 of them, George, Gracie, and Uncle Buck.

They are a bit cramped for space in the 50 gallon tank. We have another 20 gallon, but no space to set it up now. The plecktos will grow into whatever tank they are in. G & G are both over 12" long.

Wow! Two feet of fish. I'll have to google "plecktos" and see just what we are talking about. Google told me the spelling was plecos and the picture they showed were some strange looking swimming dudes.

I always misspell their names.

Just look under alge eaters. They are from warm climates. They also eat cucumbers in the tank.

The correct name is Plecostomus. I just like to use Plectomites or Pleckotights for fun.

I'm going to get dressed and go to Brix (a local French bistro) for brunch....drink lots of mimosas and be happy there are no teevees. No football or baseball or CNN. Just a bunch of locals eatin' and drinkin' and gabbin'....

As to what's catching my eye this morning....I read The Berkshire Eagle this morning and here are a few items to share:

First, a Registered Nurse from Dutchess County New York, Suzanne Field, has asked a judge to block New York state's requirement that all health care workers get vaccinated against the flu. Her attorney said she has filed the lawsuit to protect the rights of nearly 60,000 medical workers covered by an emergency rule put in place in the wake of this year's swine flu scare.

Field's request for a restraining order is now before a judge in Manhattan. A hearing is planned for Wednesday.

The New York Nurses Association has opposed the new rule.

I spoke to a rep. from the NYNA and she told me that one of the kickers in all this is that most of the DOCTORS are not mandated to get the H1N1 jab because they are not EMPLOYEES of the hospitals! Of course this is a complete joke since they still enter the facilities and do rounds on their patients, touch the patients and are in close contact.

And then here is an AP story headlined: "Health Care Poses No Quick Fix" regarding the 3 year wait for benefits to begin. Here was the best quote from the story: The White House Budget Director, Peter Orszag told the AP in a recent interview, "It's very important to get the execution right." Hack!, Cough! Sputter! Gag!!

Yeah! You can say THAT again!!!!

It's a riot around here in The Berkshires. People go out and walk their medium sized dogs and LOTS of the dogs walk by with BIG stuffed animals in their mouths. It's like a fad or something in these here parts.

It's actually more fun to watch his reaction to what he sees than to watch the shows. Every time a bird flys up in a show, Martini looks above the tv and all around the room to try to see where it went. When small dogs cry he gets upset and stands on his back legs right in front of the tv screen as if he's trying to help them. FnS has on Vegas Casino mogul Steve Wynn (on a panel of four) to discuss economic growth.

Wynn turns out to be a far Right-wing tool. He says Obama should have made "jobs" his top priority upon inauguration, not "side-issues" like healthcare.

Granholm (D-MI) does a fantastic job of taking Wynn to task for that suggestion, pointing out that the burden of healthcare puts American employers at an extreme disadvantage, and resolving that will create thos jobs Wynn is talking about.

Not responded to is the fact Wynn is (as Wallace points out) "building casinos in China. But no one ever asks why the Chinese can afford to go to his casinos while we can't.

Maybe this is why, Steve.

Putting more boots on the ground and ramping up troop levels is a disastrous decision and, ultimately, is going to prove counter productive. Security will be "won", perhaps, but at the cost increased resentment of U.S. troops and civilian casualties that will drive more and more to the Taliban. We need to start talking to the Taliban and recognize them, thats the only way to "win" anything, thru negotiation. The Taliban is not going anywhere.

oh really's picture

...that the real issue is whether or not Obama has "suggested" anything. The problem is that unlike most of the other recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize Obama hasn't actually done anything. It's not a question of success or failure; Obama doesn't have a record of action and deeds in pursuit of peace. Apparently, his prize is based on a few hundred words in a few speeches over the course of a relatively few months. That's not the kind of record that Nelson Mandela or Aung San Suu Kyi had. There are no years of personal struggle against daunting odds or powerful forces of evil, no years in prison, no great hardships endured. Rather there are a few hundred words in a few speeches over the course of a relatively few months. Rather than try to justify what was by any reasonable standards a poor choice, lefties should simply acknowledge that the Norwegians made a mistake, point out that their error is neither Obama's fault nor his responsibility, and emphasize the difference between that position and the hateful response of the Wingers.

Lots of people have "suggested a new path towards world peace." (Note: I don't think a global scope is necessary. Aung San Suu Kyi's efforts in Burma/Myanmar were not directed at bringing about world peace; rather they were illustrative of a philosophy and actions that could, if applied globally, result in world peace.) However, Obama's deeds don't match his rhetoric. It's much too early to know whether he will ever act in such a way -- over a sustained period -- as to deserve recognition. Given what is happening in Afghanistan, three years from now the choice of Obama could easily look more like a second Kissinger than a well-intentioned miscalculation.

This year, worthy people who have already proven themselves, not merely by inspirational words, but by hard work and personal sacrifice and risk have been passed over. The worst possible reason to give Obama the prize is to say "Fuck you" to Bush. That's the reasoning of a petulant adolescent and ought have no place in consideration for such an award. After putting Bush in office twice (legitimately or not), the American people certainly don't deserve any recognition for replacing him with Obama. After all, Bush was gone no matter what, thanks to FDR-hating Republicans of the nineteen forties.

Sadly, I think that the Nobel committee's choice has a genuine cheapening effect on the prize in general. I don't hold Obama responsible in any way (unless he nominated himself) for the decision of a bunch of Norwegians. I don't even think there was a satisfying way for him to have turned down the award -- although that might have given substance to Obama's words that he was "humbled" by his selection and that he isn't worthy to be compared with other past recipients (and he's not).

Personally, I think scrambling to defend this decision makes lefties look silly. If the Peace Prize forces Obama to reconsider decisions and alter his thinking about future decisions, then some good may come of it, but those possibilities are not sufficient justification for choosing Obama in the first place.
