Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread

Sting - Brand New Day

This weekend, we took out all our Christmas decorations, as I had promised my kids we'd do, because they love the little rituals of decorating for Christmas. Specific ornaments must be hung on the tree, the little Christmas village must be set just so. Tchotchkes and their wrappings are strewn all over as well as those annoying pine needles that never can be completely vacuumed up. In short, the house looks like a Yule bomb was set off in it. I got slightly depressed looking at the state of the house, knowing that it would be my job to clean it back up to a reasonable level again. And then I thought about Barack Obama, and how daunting his new job must seem. Can you imagine having to clean up after 8 years of destruction and detritus left by the Bush administration? Oy.

Outgoing GOP flack Tom Brokaw will be asking the President-elect about the sisyphean task before him on Meet the Press. Meanwhile, Condoleezza Rice will tell George Stephanopoulos that no one could ever have anticipated Pakistani terrorism against India on This Week and Chris Matthews is still trying to find an anti-Hillary framing that will stick on The Chris Matthews Show. Some things never change.

ABC's "This Week" - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Ron Gettelfinger, president, United Auto Workers.

CBS' "Face the Nation" - Sens. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala.

NBC's "Meet the Press" - President-elect Barack Obama.

CNN's "Late Edition" - Rice; Govs. Tim Pawlenty, R-Minn., and Ed Rendell, D-Pa.

CNN's "GPS with Fareed Zakaria" - Former Secretary of State Colin Powell

"Fox News Sunday" - Rice, Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Richard Shelby, R-Ala.

NBC's "The Chris Matthews Show" - Panel: Andrea Mitchell, Joe Kernan, John Heilemann, Kathleen Parker. Topics: Does Obama have a blank check to fix the economy? Who will have more influence on Obama: Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton? Meter Questions: Does Obama have a blank check for his economic stimulus plan? YES: 9 NO: 3; Will Hillary Clinton have more influence on Obama's foreign policy than Joe Biden? YES: 10 NO: 2

So, what's catching your eye this morning?

Gregory doesn't take over till January (IIRC).

(Update: Gregory starts next week. Brokaw apparently wanted the Obama interview.)

"GPS with Fareed Zakaria" I think he is one of the best on the Telly, but I have to wait for the Internets Toob Stream to see him.

Good Morning Everyone!

I'm going to watch Obama on MTP and then we are going to put up and decorate our Christmas tree. It's kind of chilly here in Fla. this morning so it's a good day for Christmas tree puttin' up. You betcha!

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Bangkok Bob's picture

I never saw a christmas tree until when i woke on christmas morning (as a kid) the adults did all that on the eve and partied while we were locked in our rooms.

Nice to see you again POP

pissed off patricia's picture

Nice to be seen!

Your Christmas tradition sounds like the adults got to have way too much fun.

Wallace on FnS asks some good questions of Rice:

(Video of Bush on Iran and nukes): "Isn't Iran closer today than they were 8 years ago?"

(next video of Bush on looming peace in Israel): "Honestly, we are nowhere NEAR peace between Israel and Palestine."

Answers are from Rice, so naturally, irrelevant.

PS: Now Wallace is asking about that "intelligence regret on WMDs" Bush admitted too, and naturally, Rice points to how little we knew of Iraq's capability in 1991... a complete non-sequiteur.

Watching Obama on MTP makes me so damned proud that he will be our president for the next four/eight years.

to finally have a president of Words, REAL Words, not the garbled, tortured and twisted utterances of the present nitwit.

I hope that once this all calms a bit that this admin has the good sense to Raise Gasoline Tax for a number of reasons: to provide better mass transit, fix the roads and bridges, rebuild the electrical grid, etc.

Rice defending the invasion of Iraq is Clip-worthy (and painful to watch).

Any one surprised at the Neo Con offensive to polish the turd known as the Bush administration ? The saddest part is that the fuckers will probably all walk clean from it too. After what they did to Clinton over a god damned consensual blow job. Watching Chimp try to lay the blame on Clinton,CiA,Intelligence failures (his), or anyone aside from themselves, is just fucking pathetic. The rest of the world will still take notice the lack of any real justice in the USA.The country where a guy pilfering a loaf of bread to feed his family will get years but these assholes kill a million and steal billions and walk scott free. What a joke ! Gone forever is any high moral ground the USA can claim. It wont matter if in fact Barack can walk on water and save us all. The lack of justice for war criminals Bush and Cheney and crew will always be obvious and apparent.

Bangkok Bob's picture

The Us will have a tough time recovering its good name because these people will will never pay for their crimes.

Found this idea online. Amazing. Too bad the Big 3 couldn't possibly do this. Other businesses do, including my company. But I guess the Big 3 couldn't possibly do this.

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Argentine automakers will sell basic models at cost through state-subsidized loans in a plan to protect jobs in Latin America's third-biggest economy from the global economic slowdown, government officials said on Saturday."We have agreed with the plants that these cars will be offered without a profit margin and the dealerships will also reduce their profit margin," Industry Secretary Fernando Fraguio told a news conference on Saturday.

The $890 million government auto loans program is part of a $3.8 billion economic stimulus package announced on Thursday by President Cristina Fernandez.

Each automaker will offer two of its most economic models for the plan, while the government will provide three different financing packages with interest rates much lower than market rates, to be funded by the social security system.

ConcernedCanuck's picture

that works for one of the big 3? Have any idea what the cost price of one of these vehicles is?

Canada parliament suspended .

Harper's appeal to the governor general came
three weeks after elections [AFP]

Canada's governor general has agreed to suspend the country's two-week old parliament until January, effectively blocking an attempt by the political opposition to defeat the government.

Michaelle Jean's decision on Thursday came hours after Stephen Harper, the country's prime minister, made a unprecedented request for the suspension, local media reports said.

are lost without that one month yearly spectacle known as parliament, where morons without a clue stand up and shout at each other like little children in a playground. Good riddance to all of them. Hoping they call another election and absolutely nobody shows up to vote because they are sick and tired of the entire bunch.

Harper is just using Roves playbook to try and outrun the hangman. Worst thing about Harper is he keeps his real agenda sooper secret and drops bombshells when Parliment is in session.
Trying to strip the parties of public funding( to his parties obvious benefit) was another bombshell that will blow up in his face. That had scumbag De Lay written all over it.Like his hero, dumbfuck Bush , Harper thinks a minority government is a mandate to ram all the whacko right wing shit through.

I too often have to remind fellow Canucks that, Harper is on the record as saying he would have gladly sent our kids to get ground up in Iraq too in Bushes dirty little fucking war if he had been in office in 02. Should be enough of an eye opener for anyone really.

mudshark's picture

I couldn't agree more.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

ConcernedCanuck's picture

there is no alternative to Harper. The rest of the "leaders" are idiots, except for Layton, and anybody that has had an NDP government in recent years would never vote for his party. They create one helluva mess. Almost bankrupted Ontario. Best case scenario would be for an election to be called, and NOBODY show up to vote, to show a proper protest that maybe the parties will actually understand.

That would be counter productive. Just more of the "Same Old", No?
You have a nice day Concerned.

ConcernedCanuck's picture

If nobody votes for the scumbags, none of the scumbags are elected. How else to knock some sense into the political parties? Obviously, voting one party, then the next, then back, then back, does nothing. They bide their time and spend their lives in politics, knowing that soon they'll be able to fill their bank accounts and be famous for doing nothing. Landslide turnout majorities cause political parties to think they can do whatever the hell they want until the next election, so that doesn't work. See Bush for proof. None of them listen to emails or phone calls. It's like they live in a diff reality. And if phone in radio shows are any indication, support for Harper has actually INCREASED from this publicity stunt.

mudshark's picture

None of the scumbags are elected."

Ridiculous.
If you get what you want,The right will seize the opportunity.
But you do what you want.
At least we're trying.

What do you get? You get what they give you. Nothing more. Thought this was all about change. Perhaps not, eh? Trying mudshark? Really, what choice did you really have? None. You selected what they wanted you to select. It was the Dems "turn". I don't buy all that change bs. You can sell that to new voters, but not older people. You can't change politics after a party has been elected to a majority. It's been tried. Over and over. Who's winning all the change right now? Let's see. Wall Street (banks) and corporations. That's some change.

mudshark's picture

With an attitude like that. Time will tell if Obama succeeds or not. Pessimism gets you nowhere.
But you've shown that you're willing to accept the status quo.

As witnessed by the current election here, change can happen. We now have a Democrat in the WH.
Now, I know some people haven't seen enough to say change is happening.
Well, all I can say is you guys are jumping the shark here. I see a somewhat kind of knee jerk reaction to the current events.

I find it ludicrous that someone who's country is just as screwed up if not more than this one post such whining and bitching about the same old ,same old, Yet you say people should just not vote at all.
Yeah, right. That'll fix it. Do nothing. Just complain about others. Sure, that's the ticket.

Come back and lets take a look at what has happened in the 1st year here.
Then I'll take into consideration what you say. Until then, take your meds.

Older voters in this country are a very large voting block. Maybe you should roll up your sleeves and get to work trying to fix your countries ills. Instead of just whining about ours.
Do you see the hypocrisy here? Hmmm?

In a year, your optimism will have waned tremendously. I'm sorry if I'm a realist and don't just suck up the political koolaid from one party over another. That makes me nuts, huh? No I'd say that makes me normal. My country isn't in as bad as shape as yours, although it's not for lack of trying from your government. In a year, if we survive, we'll compare notes and see just how well the depression is going, with Jeebus H Obama as Prez.

mudshark's picture

Your pessimism in boring.
Say what you will. We have Democratic leadership here now .
Good luck with Harper. You're going to need it.
But go right ahead pissing and moaning about this country.

If it distracts you from doing something about your problems, go right ahead.

Don't vote?
Was that all you could come up with?
Your reply doesn't hit on that part of the conversation. Why is that?
Is it because it's a stupid point?
Never mind, don't answer that.
It's plain to see by your comments up there.

In the meantime, I will keep you to your word. We will further this conversation in a year.
But I doubt you can keep that part.
This country doesn't have a suspended government.Your country is in the same financial crisis as this one. The automotive industry is in the same situation in your country as in this one. Why is that?
Is it because US firms have factories in Canada?
So the US automotive industry does provide a source of income to tens of thousands of Canadians. Or used too.

No, I'd say your country is just as screwed up as this one. And for having such a smaller population, I'd say that was pretty pathetic.

You're not a realist Concerned.
A realist would say wait, at least until the man gets sworn into office.
Then start criticizing him. No, You jumped the gun. And all that is,is looking for anything to bitch about.

As you know, Obama was not my first choice. I said I'd support him. And I did. I'm not going to chastise him for doing a lousy job when he hasn't even started yet.

You may be right about my optimism in a year. Then again, you may be completely wrong.
We all know that boosh really screwed up the US to an extreme.
It will take more than just one year to fix all that is screwed up here.
But, I'm willing to bet that Obama will make progress over the current state of affairs .

Why do you hate Obama so much?
Would you be happier with McCain?
By the way you call Obama, Jesus H Obama, It has the appearance that you personally hate him. Like he was a repug or something.
You really should do something about your own country. It would probably make you feel a whole lot better.
Oh, that's right, you don't want to do anything ,do you ?
Good luck with that.
In the meantime, see your doctor.
Get an Rx for depression.

I'll admit , it was Dions election to lose and he did. The Liberals blew it plain and simple. Its become painfully obvious the last week too that Harper has the Canadian media in his pocket too. They have yet to call him on any of his lies and concentrate on belittling the so called "coalition". Harper knows a lot about coalitions. It took a coalition of his half alive former party ( Reform Party ) and the cold dead carcass of the ole Conservative Party to rebrand the Conservatives in Canada. Harper also once proposed a coalition with the BQ to defeat the Liberals but that was " different". Its only treason when others do it to him. Sad that this is setting up a red/blue paradigm in Canada. The failure of the auto industry will hurt Ontario really bad and the "haves" from Alberta will be bitching about supporting us again. The less informed from the west will claim Ontario is just picking on Harper. They should stop and think about is as Alberta is running at a loss at moment too with oil down far below the break even point for refining oil sands. The bloom might just be off that rose too. Take that and Harper calling Quebecers "traitors" en masse and the ride could get a little bumpy here too in the future.

tyree's picture

how yah feel about breaking the auto unions and wouldnt it be better if they brought in the scabs you seem to love! and who cares about canadas problems let them fight it out themselves its thier country!
