The coal ash disaster that never was.
Watch the video, it is stunning. How often is this massive disaster in the news? What major media outlet is covering this? Sick and disgusting.
Hey, if it had to happen better there than Vermont. Tennesseans voted for more of the same and they got it in spades. Had that happened in Provincetown Pat Robertson would be on the teevee saying it was God's punishment on the homosexual devients.
Well hello MsJoanne. How were your holidays?
I had the best holiday and the most spectacular of weekends. 2009 is starting out to be the best year.
How was your holiday?
Well, I had to spend it alone because of the weather but I survived.
I, for one, am very glad you did. I am sorry, however, that you had to spend it alone because Mother Nature was unhappy.
My very best wishes for the New Year
I had a pretty spectacular weekend myself for a change.

The Vatican lies about birth-control pills being bad for the environment. Bush says, "Federally-funded retirement and health care for me, but not for thee."
George On a Walker Bush endorses Jeb for President. Wax-in-the-ears-man thinks people who make a living elbowing, choking, and pummeling each other with lawn chairs are a bad influence on kids when they take steroids doing it.
is an outrage!
They've been lying since their inception. What bugs me is Bush saying it's ok for him to get free health care, but it would cause "shortages" if the rest of the country got it.
I think that both of these lying institutions (the church and the Bush administration) are disgraceful and outrageous. And nothing will be done to either. Lies and more lies, greed and more greed (ever hear about the art collection at the Vatican? Most valuable collection in the world.)
when they have Jesus.
ingredients can end up in the water system, like other pharmaceuticals can. However, I'd trust a little more in someone besides the Vatican's spokesperson. In God I trust, all others: corroborate.
Steroid monster-men or stick-bodied anorexic models, what ever.
I'm more worried kids will become monster-men politicians like Waxman who get paid to stick their noses into other peoples business, and block doctors and patients access to non-patentable bio-identical hormones on behalf of companies selling pregnant horse-piss extract hormones (premarin.)

New Rule for 2009: Cut the Crap.
It's a new year! With GWB's turn at bat almost over and BHO on deck, wouldn't it be nice if we could end the word games and semantic inventiveness we've had to endure these past eight years and recapture, if not honesty, then some level of clear speech?
For instance:
If you are married and "seeing" another woman, you don't "have problems with your marriage", you are an adulterer.
If you're banging every guy you meet because they bought you dinner, you're not "a really friendly gal", you're a slut.
If you can't give an honest answer to a straight-forward question, you don't "have a way with words", you're a bullsh*t artist.
And, if you have to almost drown someone to get the "truth" out of them, you're not using "enhanced interrogation techniques", you're torturing.
Get the idea? How about we all insist that everyone we know or meet cuts the crap in 2009?
Best-selling author and visionary thinker Mark Joyner has just posted an amazingly clear-headed proposal to end the current Israeli and Palestinian conflict in the Gaza Strip. He is encouraging anyone and everyone to take a look at his proposal, share, discuss and most of all, take action on it.
All those truly interested in PEACE in the middle east should at least read this proposal right now: How To End The Israeli Palestinian Conflict
First, the Arabs are the the instigators, the attackers, the ones who have literally brainwashed themselves to be filled with hate, whose express policy is that Israel has no right to exist, and whose express goal is the annihilation of Israel, and the murder of its citizens. That is the foundational premise that you either don't understand, or chose to ignore.
Second, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Fattah, PLO, etc., have a long established history of purposely and indiscriminately targeting Israeli civilians. And they use their own citizens as human shields as a subterfuge for propaganda. Conversely, Israel uses all reasonable means to avoid the death of Arab civilians.
Third, every attempted cease fire, treaty and land for peace deal, has been breached by the Arabs because they have no interest in making peace with Israel. They're interest is the destruction of Israel. If nothing else is crystal clear, it is crystal clear that bargaining with the Arabs is futile.
So, knowing that bargaining with the Arabs is demonstrably futile, and that they willingly, purposely, embed themselves among their own citizens as shields, how then, do you propose that Israel defend itself, without inadvertently killing Arab civilians? It's impossible, and it's 100% the doing of the Arabs, to themselves.
YOUR EFFORTS AND YOUR OUTRAGE HAS TO BE DIRECTED TOWARD THE ARABS. THEY INSTIGATE EVERY SINGLE CONFLICT WITH ISRAEL, THEY PURPOSELY TARGET ISRAELI CIVILIANS, AND THEY PURPOSELY SACRIFICE THEY'RE OWN CITIZENS AS A SUBTERFUGE FOR PROPAGANDA. WHEN THE ARABS STOP ATTACKING ISRAEL, THE CEASEFIRE WILL BE AUTOMATIC. ISRAEL HAS NO OTHER INTEREST IN THIS CONFLICT.

It was still there when I cut and pasted it (obviously).
Nice cut and paste from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I think you covered all the talking points.
By the way, what do you mean, "The Arabs"?
The Lebanese dislike the Syrians as much as they dislike Israel for the occupation of their land. The Saudis and Egyptians fear Iran because it's Shiah and they're Sunni. Jordan is a sock puppet. The biggest CIA compound in the Middle East is in Jordan, nicknamed the "Castle".
You sure know how to make it look like poor Israel is surrounded by a monolith, the scawy "Arabs", when in fact Israeli security companies are training corrupt governments in the Persian Gulf states to quell internal unrest. God forbid that oil money made its way down to the working people [/snark]
I feel sorry for you. Pick up a newspaper some time, any newspaper. Just read something to expand your vocabulary.
to determin the facts when we have the MSP (Main Stream Propaganda) giving us the so called news. If we can do the research over the internet we sometimes get both sides of the story. I won't offer an opinion, because I don't know what the true facts are.
Israel is scheduled for elections in February of 2009.
This Gaza incursion is just an election campaign gimmick to drum up fear before the election.
Yes. It's a stunt to drum up votes, to show "If you vote for me, I'll be tough with those pesky Palestinians". It's also an opportunity for Israel to do whatever it wants before the inauguration. Israel, believe it or not, is still weary of Obama's presidency, despite his groveling at the AIPAC summit.
On top of that, Bush was the one who pushed for free elections in Gaza a few years ago. He sent Rice and told her to make it happen. When Hamas was elected, Israel blamed Bush. He wanted a legacy and instead ended up upsetting the Israelis. That's when Israel and the U.S. insisted that the Fatah party remain in power. When Hamas, the legitimate winner persisted, Israel started the so-called "surgical assassinations" where members of the legislature, from the Hamas party, were bombed from the air. Sometimes they were kidnapped and thrown in Israeli jails. When Fatah refused to step down and relinquish power, Hamas took over the government in Gaza. U.S. media today, especially CNN, claimed that Hamas overthrew the Palestinian government in Gaza in a military coup. Hogwash.
So, this last week was Bush's "making amends" with Israel move. Essentially saying the U.S. will back you up in whatever you do against Gaza/Hamas. Have at it.
they cut a deal with Hamas to get them to fire rockets and mortars into Israel? I don't think that would have been a very good strategy for Hamas if they were looking for a moderate Israeli government to with whom to negotiate.
Read the articles previously posted on C&L concerning this conflict.
Just because you're intellectually lazy, doesn't mean I'm going to do the work for you.
bother to read yours. You never bother to read mine before you start name calling. Your statement above was simplistic and illogical. Play the ball not the man.
Your posts are usually devoid of facts, especially when posting in Crenig's threads about Iran. He shows you proof, you strike back with talking points and nonsense.
should let Cernig, for whom I have considerable respect, speak for himself regarding any differences of opinion we might have. We've enjoyed many a pleasant exchange over at Newshoggers. Cernig never brings a pea shooter to a gun fight and, more importantly, never resorts to childish insults when engaged in a debate.
Amen. And what's up with starting his sentence in the subject line and then moving into the text box? That's so annoying.
Conservative elements in the Israeli government (e.g. Benjamin Netanyahu) broke the cease fire in November by attacking Gaza hoping to provoke a reaction - however anemic.
The Palestinian response was predictable and desired by the Likkudniks. It gave Netanyahu his pretense for a bloodbath and will probably work to his advantage for the elections in February. Israel seems to prefer its leaders bloody. The Likkud Party certainly does.
which were being used to ferry arms...which was a violation of the cease fire
who broke it first????
[deleted--don't you think this thread is heated enough without you trying to start a flame war? KNOCK IT OFF or we'll give you a time out.]
If you forget so quickly after reading an article or a comment then put up a PostIt on the door of your fridge to remind you of this fact:
The ceasefire agreement called on Hamas to stop the rockets and on Israel to open the crossings and end the siege. Hamas complied from day one, Israel refused to lift the siege. Four months later the ceasefire fizzled.
THAT was the violation. Is that clear enough for you?
why Hamas fired rockets at the checkpoints when they were opened to allow aid into Gaza in 2005 forcing them to be shut down immediately.
The Israelis, going against the terms of the cease fire, arbitrarily declared entires swathes of the strip to be off-limits to the Palestinians. They then made a game of sniping at farmers trying to work their fields and taking potshots at random Palestinians. Israel never had any intention of upholding the cease fire, and kept ratcheting up the provocations, as they have always done, until the Palestinians finally responded. The Hamas has it's problems, too, but Israel has never wanted or been willing to tolerate peace. Whenever peace gets too close they always make with the provocations, and then claim to be the victims. If that doesn't work, they assassinate their own leaders. It's applied sociopathy and they use it to excuse war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Why are the Israelis not permitting foreign journalists in the Gaza Strip?
And, hey Bushie, how's that Palestinian state you promised on your "road map" coming along?
... that this operation has been in the works for at least six months.
I guess the only difficult part of the plan was provoking the excuse. The rest? Well that's as easy as making war on civilians.
when Tom Clancy used it it a novel. He had American troops as the peacekeepers which probably wouldn't work but the idea of a peacekeeping force is probably the best solution to the madness.
Uri Avnery, a Jewish Israeli, who back in the day was a member of the Irgun and later fought in a special commando unit of Jewish forces in 1948 wrote a very informative article this weekend.
Later in life, Mr. Avnery became a peace activist and has since received numerous death threats from Jewish extremists for his activism.
Here is his article:
Jan 3, 2009
JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT, Aljazeera’s Arabic channel was reporting on events in Gaza. Suddenly the camera was pointing upwards towards the dark sky. The screen was pitch black. Nothing could be seen, but there was a sound to be heard: the noise of airplanes, a frightening, a terrifying droning.
It was impossible not to think about the tens of thousands of Gazan children who were hearing that sound at that moment, cringing with fright, paralyzed by fear, waiting for the bombs to fall.
“ISRAEL MUST defend itself against the rockets that are terrorizing our Southern towns,” the Israeli spokesmen explained. “Palestinians must respond to the killing of their fighters inside the Gaza Strip,” the Hamas spokesmen declared.
The zionists might come in and start calling you a jew hater and claiming the author is a self hating jew ;)
Good article. Not surprised by the comments on the so called "Arab world" as the Palestinians are essentially the gypsies of the Middle East except everyone likes to use them as a red herring for their own govs failures. Everyone likes to pound on them while at the same time blaming Israel/Palestinians for their respective govs failures.
You know, honest to God (even though I don't believe there really is a God), I get tired of hearing that "anti-Semitic" canard.
I was at a demonstration in NYC yesterday where more than 10,000 people attended. Among them were people from all walks of life, blacks, Palestinian Americans, Christian Americans from other nationalities, a few Asians and a few people from Scandinavian countries. I also spoke with a group Jewish Americans who walked all the way from Brooklyn to Manhattan because they don't drive or ride the train on the Sabbath.
At the same time, honest and open discussions take place in Israel itself, albeit in select circles, concerning the "conflict".
But, for some reason, whenever that issue is brought up here in the States, it's immediately suppressed with accusations of "Antisemitism". It gets old and unfortunately, when true Antisemitism takes place it becomes hollow, like the boy who cried wolf.
which I am, you are accused of being anti Semitic.
middle east...[deleted--Uncle Joe, stop attacking posters personally. If you can't do better than call names, you've lost this argument.]
Uncle Asshat,
You're painting with a broad brush again. It seems you're incapable of understanding complex issues. You think in binary and expect people to be like you. The world is not black and white.
For the record, Israel is not responsible for all the region's problems, just the biggest one, the Palestinian issue.
Israel is also the most powerful state in the region. Not only through military might, but through U.S. support. Israel is the only nation in history that enjoys the full unequivocal support of a superpower.
At the end of the day, your comments are very telling. You lack the historical background and the detailed knowledge about the Israeli/Palestinian issue and since you can't discredit me on those grounds, you resort to labeling me a "Jew hater".
I'm finished with you.
Did Israel tell the Palestinians to shun the idea of a duel state which they're only coming around to 60 years later?
So by your logic, Tibet isn't legitimate, either.
is not his strong point.
Just when I was going to log off....
How come the UN is useless, powerless and irrelevant when the time comes for Israel to comply with the 65+ UN resolutions it has violated, but when it comes to the two state solution, suddenly the 1947 partition plan becomes the law of the land?
"So by your logic, Tibet isn't legitimate, either."
You're slicing and dicing again. Read my post carefully. It merely explains that Israel is under no existential threat since it enjoys the backing of a superpower. How you got the "legitimate" issue from that is beyond me. If you want to argue over semantics and feel free to waste someone else's time.
were so toxic to the very existence of Israel that they were deservedly ignored. You might try reading some of them. When Qaddafi's Libya sponsors a resolution regarding Israel you can bet it is going to be a humdinger.
Well, how come those same Arab nations don't put the onus on Sudan for the same U.N. violations they attribute to Israel?
If it's under no existential threat, then it wouldn't need to make treaties and cease-fires in the first place.
And I don't see those same Europeans calling what's happening in France's ghettos "apartheid". They certainly didn't call what Milosevic was doing genocide.
I take you have never been in Europe lately, much less France. Ghettos? LOL.
And BTW, Milosevic ended up in The Hague didn't he?
So I guess those riots were over nothing, then? And Milosevic ended up in the Hague through our intervention, while the rest of Europe twiddled its thumbs.
I was going to respond that Joe made my point.
Uncle Joe,
You've been posting on this site for years. I know you're better than that. A lot better. What gives?

How does one search cached webpages by text instead of a URL????
(ie; Wayback Machine only seems to be able to search by a URL, I want to search for something within an old webpage for something contained within that old webpage (which I'll never be able to remember what webpage it's on))
ctrl F or edit -> find
First off, did you try looking for dead pages in Google, and select "Cached?" Yes? OK, find one of your sites' pages in archive.org.
I haven't actually done this, and it could take some time, depending on the size and number of pages, so you will have to decide if it is worth your time, but in theory you could:
Display all cached items by deleting the last character of a file to intentionally spoil the results, so that you get the "Sorry, no matches" message.
Look for "Click here to search for all pages on -----.com" (or .net, or whatever,) click, let load.
On the lower-right, set "Results per page" to maximum (30.)
Look for results that look promising, and then save all the .html files to a new folder on your own computer with DownThemAll!, a firefox extension, to make this much less a chore.
Repeat for subsequent pages of results.
Then bring up your OS' Search function and search for the appropriate terms within files. You might want to install a desktop search program like Google Desktop, to allow more intelligent, flexible Google-like results.
I think ya'll missed the jist of my question. I think you think I know which page I'm searching on. What I need to know how to do is search for the page(s) by some text contained within. I know some of the text, I don't know which URL's the text is located on.
On the front page of the 5 Jan 2009 International Herald Tribune (paper and web edition http://www.iht.com) are photos that clearly show area bombs - white phosphorous from the look of it, but it would be worse if they are cluster bombs - being detonated over a heavily populated area of Gaza.
(The NYTIMES has a slide show at http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2009/01/04/w... that shows a picture of a third detonation)
I note the following
1. Area weapons are not "precision" and any civilian casualties are entirely intentional when they are used like this.
2. White phosphorous is banned from use in this way by international convention (it can be used for illumination, but this is in daylight)
3. White phosphorous is an ugly weapon that burns and kills on skin contact.
4. I note that IHT has published two separate photos showing two separate detonations (one on the web page, one that I saw on the front page of the paper edition. The NYTIMES has a slide show at http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2009/01/04/w... that shows a picture of a third detonation - slide 1)
Therefore, these photos do not depict accidental events.
Take a good look. You are looking at photos of atrocities and war crimes.
Time to demand some answers from the Israeli Defence Forces.
the crime of firing missiles into civilian Israeli neighborhoods.
Before you start calling me naive, I suggest you and some other posters ride your high horse over there and gather your intelligence first hand.
BUT...use of such excessive force in retaliation ain't exactly right either.
Both sides are wrong, but seems to me that Israel response is a bit...heavy handed.
In this application, the white phosphorus was used as a marker.
Seems that they've a history of saying one thing and doing another in regards to their dealings with the Palestinians.
But, not one of us can say with certainty, unless we were there.
I just hope this clusterfuck ends without someone gettin nuked.
the white phosphorous was part of an elaborate fireworks display by the IDF to entertain the poor children of Gaza.

America's Hidden Role in Hamas's Rise to Power

The Bush administration appears poised to push through a change in U.S. Forest Service agreements that would make it far easier for mountain forests to be converted to housing subdivisions. Mark E. Rey, the former timber lobbyist who heads the Forest Service, last week signaled his intent to formalize the controversial change before the Jan. 20 inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama. As a candidate, Obama campaigned against the measure in Montana, where local governments have complained of being blindsided by Rey's negotiating the policy shift behind closed doors with the nation's largest private landowner.

Want to REALLY help the "peace process" achieve real peace AND justice? How about respecting the Right of Return like Israel promised to do as a condition of being admitted into the UN? Israel was accepted into the UN on condition that it accept the Right of Return of the Palestinian refugees. Admission of Israel to membership in the United Nations (General Assembly Resolution 273 of May 11, 1949 ) requires Israel to comply with General Assembly Resolution 194 of December 11, 1948 and Israel stated it agreed to comply with this resolution. But of course they immediately refused because the racist agenda of the Zionists is to remove as many non-Jews as possible. SEE MY BLOG
