The feds are running out of coupons to help lower-income people convert to digital broadcasting. Feinstein finally backs down on Panetta, and tries to blame her complacency with Bush for holding Obama to a different standard. Of course, her argument about his lack of experience falls flat, when she automatically endorses Burris. Will Obama also do something about Bush's illegal Afghan prison? Bitch McConnell considers it "reckless" and potentially "frivolous" to automatically endorse Barry's stimulus plan, when he didn't seem to have a problem with endorsing Bush's endless spending spree on the war. The European and American economies are facing the Grim Reaper, as one suicidal German billionaire can attest. Seven NYC hospitals engaged in Medicaid fraud. Will Obama be able to keep his promise about economic accountability? Unlike Bush, Obama is ready to deal with the Middle East crisis on Day One. If being against Zionism isn't the same as being anti-Semitic, why are there currently hate crimes against European Jews not living in Israel?

With Ed Smith! I think we might have been the only two people to see that film the first weekend. Seriously funny, quirky film.

bluegal, you will be delighted to know i worked on an episode of 3rd rock from the sun. aside from a delightful and friendly cast and crew (and a writing staff that let me have several punchlines in the show), the biggest pleasure i had was shaking john lithgow's hand and telling him that i was proud to meet the famous dr. lizardo.

but now to the serious business of blog award whoring. as none of you know, skippy is nominated in the 2008 web log awards for best large blog authority 301 - 500, whatever the hell that means.

i wouldn't normally stoop this low...ok, sure i would...but so far the lead vote getter in this category is abhorrent rightist blog jammy wearing fool (ahead of the nearest lefty blog by more than 400 votes!)

Derrick Z. Jackson: Bush's one last blow to environment - http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_o...
The Washington Post this week reported that the administration plans to issue yet another "midnight" ruling. This one would let timber companies pave over national forest logging roads so pine tree woods can become residential subdivisions with names like "Pine Woods."
The ruling would most immediately benefit the nation's largest private landowner, 8-million-acre-owning Plum Creek Timber. The Forest Service, directed by former timber industry lobbyist Mark Rey, had long been working on a paving deal with Plum Creek behind closed doors.
It has been held up by outraged local officials who were not consulted over the impact of development on resources and by environmentalists gravely concerned about wildlife endangerments.
"We have 40 years of Forest Service history that has been reversed in the last three months," Patrick O'Herren, rural initiatives director for Missoula County, Montana, told the Post last July.
Back in 1803, Lewis and Clark said their expedition of the West was to be "a tribute to general science," by collecting "the best possible information." They would be appalled at an administration that leaves as it came in eight years ago, avoiding all possible information, trashing all available science, and leaving the Obama administration a toxic dump of regulations to reverse.

The hearing confirmed one of my nagging suspicions: whether it’s government oversight of market manipulations, timely investigations of politically connected crooks, or the best and the brightest serving the American people’s interests in the hallowed halls of our wobbly democracy, “it’s all just one big lie,” to quote Mr. Madoff on his 'business model'.
While Allan Goldstein, a quiet gentleman of 76 from upstate New York, sat patiently in a back row waiting for his turn to speak, with time to ponder the potential foreclosure on his home after losing his entire life savings to Madoff’s fraud, Rep Spencer Bachus (R-Al) debated in the opening five minutes whether this was a formal hearing or not since committee members had not yet been officially sworn in.

If you're so inclined, if the temperature of your temperament is just so, if that fourth glass of $10 recession-defying wine is making you feel unusually generous, maybe, just maybe you can muster a bit of sympathy for George W. Bush. Possible? Insane? Blasphemous? Damn straight. It's already happening. I've read a number of pieces and a few strange, sepia-toned articles of late (like this one) that, while certainly not daring to paint Bush with any sort of gushing, rose-colored, wasn't-he-an-unrecognized-genius brush of overt kindness, still attempt to give him a far larger dose of humanity and pathos than which might sit well with your very soul.
