O'Reilly flat-out lies to defend calling Helen Thomas the 'wicked witch'

Hmmm. Someone must have hit a nerve. Bill O'Reilly spent the bulk of The O'Reilly Factor last night puling loudly over being called out for having compared Helen Thomas -- a far more accomplished journalist who's forgotten more about politics than Bill O'Reilly has ever learned -- to "the wicked witch of the east."
He even entertained Courtney Martin of the Women's Media Center, whose blog earlier featured a post demanding O'Reilly apologize. O'Reilly is smug enough to assume he can bat aside liberal arguments with ease, but when he found he couldn't do so with Martin, he just looked her in the eye and lied:
Courtney Martin: I think we both know that Helen Thomas is fine with being criticized for her work, for her actual journalism. But to take a tack at her appearance is just disrespectful.
O'Reilly: Where was the appearance attack?
Martin: When was the last time you complimented someone by calling her a witch?
O'Reilly: I didn't call her a witch. I said her voice sounded like -- and I did the voice. That was clear.
Martin: Bill, come on. We all know the physical connotations of what a witch looks like.
O'Reilly: OK, so you think, sitting there, that I wanted to call Helen Thomas a witch.
Martin: You did call her -- I don't need to think anything, you did!
O'Reilly: No I didn't. I absolutely didn't. The transcript will show that it was a voice deal.
Better yet, Bill, we can roll the tape:
O'Reilly: The White House press corps looked intimidated to me... Except for that, what's her name? The old lady, Helen Thomas. [squawking sound]
Colmes: Is that your Helen Thomas impression?
O'Reilly: Yea! [squawking sound]
Colmes: I didn't know you did impersonations.
O'Reilly: It's like the wicked witch of the east! If I were Obama, I would've poured water on her, and she would dissolve!
I don't know about you, but that sure sounds to my ears like he's calling her a witch. Or is saying that she's just like a witch different than calling her a witch by something more than a degree of flimsy rationalization?
As usual, the rest of the segment devolves into more blustering until O'Reilly reaches one of his bullying-host apotheoses. You knew he couldn't resist trying to cow Martin, even in a segment devoted to demonstrating his supposed non-sexism.

Bill O'Reilly is a hack who hosted a tabloid news show and whose only claim to fame is confusing falafel for a loofah in the process of sexually harassing a female producer.

If O’Reilly was really comparing Helen Thomas’ voice to the Wicked Witch of the West, he would have used that term. My guess is that there was mo mistake. He used the word “East” because that is where he knows she is located and he was unquestionably denigrating her.

Yeah Patricia, he started out trying to defend what he said as just imitating her voice and saying that is what he was trying to do (imitate her voice). Unfortunately for him Ms. Martin was able to show Billy that he was lying and what he was doing was calling an old lady with impeccable credentials (which Billy wish he had but will never acquire for obvious reasons) he was calling her a witch (and everybody knew it because of his history with Helen Thomas). When Billy realized he was cornered he went on the attack and got the ball rolling and took a couple deep breaths through his nose (like you have seen him do before when he went "Do it live") and tried to seem incredulous that Ms. Martin never got upset that Tina Fey did a parody on the longest lasting comedy show on TV that does parodies every week about anybody that they can think of. Yeah, BillO was beside himself that the Women's Media Center would not protect Sarah Palin from Tina Fey and in the end that was why BillO had Ms. Martin on the show in the first place.... or at least that is how it ended up because Billy changed the subject like he always does when he is sooooooo wrong and can't win a debate on the merits.

Pundits need to be reminded that their words are not made of dust anymore. More and more people are capping their right ear to make sure that the words don't escape. After all, if they want to approach critics in parking lots and buses for what they have said, why can't the same be true against them?

BTW, yesterday, I heard Goldberg on a local conservative talk show program here in St. Louis. He said that he had interviewed limpballs for Goldberg's latest book.

The OReilly Factor (and the Drudge Report while we're at it), takes pride in the fact that theyve never retracted a story, as though this is a difficult task. All you have to do refuse to apologize or admit that you were even wrong. OReilly has yet to apologize to the families of WWII vets slaughtered in Malmady because he refuse to admit that he made a mistake (my favourite explanation was that he was taken out of context and that he MEANT that some American troops were in a position to commit war crimes...are you friggin kidding me?)

Wow. It's amazing how Bill O' Reilly will easily point out what he views as the "hypocrisies" of leftist organizations, yet he himself constantly makes irrelevant remarks on journalists, politicians, etc. Tina Fey impersonated Sarah Palin's speech and dress while nearly repeating what Palin actually said. Yes, Fey is a comedian and aimed to satirize Palin's speeches with moments of emphasis and expression. But even as an entertainer, she did not target Palin's appearance, and she did not try to emulate those aspects of Palin without a greater context.
O' Reilly will not apologize, and no one expects him to do so. But, if it has not already, maybe FOX could apologize publicly. Taking O' Reilly off the air would be a great start. That's definitely not going to happen anytime soon though.
...really is a non-issue. I'm sure Helen can survive being called anything O'Reilly wants to call her. Sure he's a lying hypocrite, but for people like him (and Coulter) who thrive on controversy, liberal sites going after them is a boon, not a problem.
On some things it's probably best just to ignore O'Reilly. I think this is one.
never mind, one of you smart people will steal my idea. I can't stand him. Why do progressives, dems, liberals, sane people go on his show??????? He thinks this gives him merit and he deserves NONE. I want to pull my hair out, or his.

I watched that segment and thought it funny. No one in the public eye is immune to criticism or even having a little fun poked at them. O'Reilly was clearly poking fun and I'm not surprised there are those that were upset with him. He clearly did not call her a witch but did make fun of her voice and his use of the "witch" reference was probably not his brightest moment. But the moment was light and in the big picture, not a big deal.
I don't think O'Reilly lied at all. He alone knows his motives and you aren't a mind reader. He was right to challenge Courtney Martin on her organization's complaint against him. Bill is not popular with left-wing groups and they seem to lie in wait for opportunities to discredit him. Some radical group is always trying to either distort his words or make more of them than is there. I think you fall into this latter category. But that is just my opinion and I must confess two things: First, I am an O'Reilly fan and so my view may be colored by the fact that I really like the guy. Secondly, I enjoy a little creative insulting coming from all sides of the political spectrum. I liked that he took a dig at Helen Thomas. And I think she should feel honored that she is important enough to be made fun of.
That said, this is my first post and tho I'm relatively new here, I do enjoy your blog and plan to keep reading. Thanks for the work.
