Raw Story has Harry Reid's statement.

The Constitution gives the President and the Senate shared responsibility to fill this vacancy, because the President may only act with the Advice and Consent of the Senate. At this critical moment, the President must recognize the Senate's constitutional role. He should give life to the Advice and Consent Clause by engaging in meaningful consultation with Senators of both political parties.

Andrew Sullivan is a wee-bit optimistic:"This is a critical moment for the president, a moment when he can reach back to a political center he has recently eschewed during a war in which a bitter and divisive internal fight should be avoided, if at all possible. I'm hoping for a reasonable and not overly ideological choice. What I'm expecting is another matter."

Liberal Oasis has a plan: When we fight Bush nominees this summer, we must do our best to avoid getting bogged down in technical, procedural matters.

John Cole says: This is going to be one ugly confirmation battle.

Red State: Gonzales: unseemly campaigning

Wonkette : Gosh, we didn't think Drudge even liked girls...

Mr. Sun: Help Wanted

Raw Story has reactions from some Senators.

Santorum's book is here!

Santorum's argument (after reading the first 39 pages) is that if you're in a relationship and living with that person outside of marriage, you're a threat to society... doesn't make a difference if you're gay, straight, bi, whatever. If you don't have a ton of kids, you're a threat to society because it will be easier for your marriage to unravel, etc."

"Santorum is one of the stalwart defenders of human life and the pro-family cause, and his leadership within the halls of government has been invaluable to our nation and its people.”—James C. Dobson, Founder and Chairman, Focus on the Family"

I can see the two men liking each other so much. They both have a thing for dogs.

O'Connor to Retire From Supreme Court

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court and a key swing vote on issues such as abortion and the death penalty, said Friday she is retiring. O'Connor, 75, said she expects to leave before the start of the court's next term in October, or whenever the Senate confirms her successor. There was no immediate word from the White House on who might be nominated to replace O'Connor...read on

Will Bush do the right thing and avoid a three ring "circus"? Highly doubtful. Dobson's gang is ready to mobilze. Tony Perkins marauders will be gathering at the gates of the White House.

Brooke Shields reponds to Tom Cruise

War of Words

Tom is just another garden variety Circus Clown. His calling is that of the Scientology---cough---cough--- phoney religious fools.

"The National Park Service sought out footage of ``conservative - right-wing demonstrations'' to revise the video shown to visitors at the Lincoln Memorial after being pressured by conservatives who complained the display implied Abraham Lincoln supported abortion, homosexuality and liberal causes. Park Service documents released under the Freedom of Information Act show officials purchased video of President Bush, pro-gun advocates and pro-Iraq war rallies and also considered removing images of Democratic former President Clinton at the memorial."

"The video gave the impression that Lincoln would have supported abortion and homosexuality,'' said the Web site of Rev. Louis Sheldon's Traditional Values Coalition.'' read on"

God's Circus Clowns are at it again. There's nothing like a little Civil Rights to get them all hot and bothered. I thought these succubi had souls to save not videos to destroy? Oh how I wish it were Festivus again.

Direland has some more on the story.

Watch out for the dump

needlenose

AP:
The White House said Thursday it was investigating whether Iran's new president played a role in seizing the American Embassy and holding 52 U.S. captives a quarter century ago. President Bush said the allegation by former hostages "raises many questions."

However, way at the bottom of the article we read:

Abbas Abdi, the leader of the hostage-takers, said Ahmadinejad did not take part in the seizure. Abdi has since become a leading supporter of reform in Iran and sharply opposed Ahmadinejad in the election. "He was not part of us," Abdi said.

I'm more tempted to take Abdi's word (an opponent of Ahmadinejad who has everything to gain from dinging him) over the word of a handful of hostages who spent most of their time there blindfolded and traumatized.

Regardless of the outcome of all this, the question to be answered is: "So what?"

What if Ahmadinejad was one of the hostage-takers? What are we going to do, stop dealing with Iran? Close our embassy there? Put sanctions on them? Stop inviting their leaders to dinner? What? If the answer you come up with is needlenose

Looks to me like this nonsense will distract the media plenty for a few news cycles. If I were you, I'd keep an eye out for a particularly odious document dump in the next day or two from the administration. They have this bad habit of pushing out their worst news when the media is looking elsewhere and right before a long weekend.

Update: Then again, it may not be a document dump. It may be word that Time is going to crack open the Plame case and let the special prosecutor do a Watergate number on some Whitehouse staffers' asses. Let's see how long the Ahmadinejad drivel stays on the front pages.

Paying the military to spy on us                                                            swerve left

It appears that the California National Guard, which is supported by state tax dollars, has been secretly spying on Californians engaged in peaceful protest led by mothers of those killed in the war! I personally feel complete outrage when I read this story. The Guard Unit, in an attempt to play this down, has talked about how this spying was limited. But who gives a damn about such assurances. We don't pay our government to spy on us. a big fat nothing then it's best to ignore the whole thing.

Supreme Court -- How Appealing

In case you're looking for evidence that Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist retired yesterday: Yesterday was the first day this week that "The Supreme Court Nomination Blog" failed to report that Chief Justice Rehnquist hadn't retired (cf. here and here). Proving that, sometimes, the dog that didn't bark doesn't even bother to show up.

Unleash the Blogs of War! Rising Hegemon

Dear Leader gives some red meat to the in the London Times (the paper right-wingers love, except when it comes to the Downing Street documents):

Perhaps most revealing is his response to a question about Iran. His words are polite but the President’s body language is eloquent. As I read him a quote from the latest rantings of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian President, and remind him that the Iranian President was a leader of the students who took Americans hostage in Tehran in 1979, he is visibly agitated. He glances at his advisers with a look of disgust that suggests that the chances of a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis are remoter than ever.

Well my ratings for somethin'
Good gawd y'all
