Daddy's Girl: Courtship and a Father's Rights

THE DEATH OF A MUSLIM WOMAN

In the past four months, six Muslim women living in Berlin have been brutally murdered by family members. Their crime? Trying to break free and live Western lifestyles... Hatin's crime, it appears, was the desire to lead a normal life in her family's adopted land. The vivacious 23-year-old beauty, who was raised in Berlin, divorced the Turkish cousin she was forced to marry at age 16. She also discarded her Islamic head scarf, enrolled in a technical school where she was training to become an electrician and began dating German men. For her family, such behavior represented the ultimate shame -- the embrace of "corrupt" Western ways. Days after the crime, police arrested her three brothers, ages 25, 24 and 18. The youngest of the three allegedly bragged to his girlfriend about the Feb. 7 killing....read on

...So I really am "Daddy's girl." And no man can approach me as an independent agent because I am not my own, but belong, until my marriage, to my father. At the time of my marriage, my father gives me away to my husband and there is a lawful change of ownership. At that point and at that point only, I am no longer bound to do my father's will. Instead, I must answer to my husband. If you read the rest of Numbers 30 you will see that this is the case. Notice that there is no intermediate point between Daddy and Hubby. There is no "limbo land" where the girl is free to gallivant on her own, "discovering herself" as she walks in fields of gold, apart from any defining covenant head, doing whatever she sees fit....

Novak compares filibusters to Nazi death camps A picture named NOvak_Camps1.jpg

I found this comment on Kos, by Box 13. (I hadn't had a chance to view the show yet)

"On The Captital Gang Saturday Bob Novak made the following statement:

HUNT: Bob, why would Senator Frist refuse an offer to break the deadlock?

NOVAK: Because the whole system (INAUDIBLE) you're not going to have -- like going to a concentration camp and picking out which people go to the death chamber. You're not going to let the Democrats do that, say, We're going to -- we're going to confirm this person, we're not going to confirm the other person. They're going to -- they're going to say that this is not the way we're going to do it. They've had all kinds of different offers of that kind.

Now, as a matter of fact, I believe that this -- this constitutional option is going to work. I think it's going to -- they're going to get the 50 votes that are needed....

I wonder how the Anti-Defamation League will feel about this."

After Mark Shields smacked him down with truth , Novak took the Lords name in vain, an obvious sin in Novak's passioned Catholicism.

SHIELDS: ...We are changing that now and forever, and don't you ever forget it, because it'll be 51, and they'll be ideological and it's going to be a change in the American judiciary permanently.

NOVAK: Oh, Christ!

Just another example of a religious zealot spewing lies to justify their means. I wonder how many times he goes to confession a week? I like the way he substitutes the "nuclear option" with the words"constitutional option."

Martyrs' In Iraq Mostly Saudis

Web Sites Track Suicide Bombings

Before Hadi bin Mubarak Qahtani exploded himself into an anonymous fireball, he was young and interested only in "fooling around."

Like many Saudis, he was said to have experienced a religious awakening after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and dedicated himself to Allah, inspired by "the holy attack that demolished the foolish infidel Americans and caused many young men to awaken from their deep sleep," according to a posting on a jihadist Web site... read on

How much more proof do we need that Iraq is a breeding ground for terrorists, no matter how many times the repubs try to deflect it.. We are not fighting evil dictators, but religious fanatics. Nation building does not work against religious fervor. Are we really surprised that most of the hijackers of 9/11 were Saudi's? The administration will never admit that we would have been much better off focusing on Afghanistan and Homeland Security instead of ginning up the evidence and attacking Iraq.

Part II will come hopefully later today.

Sisyphus Shrugged

now, I grant you that in this best of all possible worlds, the ideal way to handle important matters would be for Our Fearless Leader not to be involved in any way, and I find it kind of reassuring to discover that the White House agrees with me.

This, on the other hand, is somewhat disturbing

The violation of the no-fly zone Wednesday led more than 30,000 people to quickly leave the White House complex, the Capitol and the Supreme Court and triggered an eight-minute "red alert" at the White House.

At the time, Bush was riding a bicycle at a wildlife center in suburban Maryland and wasn't told of the alert until after he had completed his ride at 12:50
Vice President Dick Cheney, first lady Laura Bush and visiting former first lady Nancy Reagan were among those evacuated from the White House complex during the alert.

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said Thursday that White House Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin and the U.S. Secret Service would review Wednesday's aircraft incident, the response and the failure to notify the commander in chief during his bike ride.

Now, the White House certainly knows the man far better than I do, so I have to assume that they feel confident that he would placidly agree that it was more important for him to finish his nice relaxing bike ride than to know that a red alert had caused his wife to be evacuated from their home.

I would tend to think that was a fairly accurate assessment myself, but then I have a great deal of bias in this area.

Which seems to have been confirmed by events yet again.

Sex slaves are classy        The Next Left

... or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Tom DeLay.

Is it just me or is sex slavery classy? Taking young women who come into a country to work in factories and then forcing them into prostitution ... that's class.

You know what else is classy? No minimum wage. Making sure that immigrant workers in the Marianas can continued to be paid whatever factory owners want to pay them ... that's class. Sticking a "Made in the USA" label on the products of their labor ... that's extra classy.

So who is the champion of class? Not the Democrats. When in 1997, Bill Clinton proposed to Marianas governor that workers have rights like those in the United States ... definitely not classy. Telling Marianas governor “certain labor practices in the islands . . . are inconsistent with our country’s values,” was an unclassy move. p.m., 47 minutes after the "red alert" was issued and 36 minutes after an all-clear.

Wal-Mart Lies; Big Surprise!

Sometimes the juxtaposition of events is just too good to pass up. Take Wal-Mart, for instance.

The Sunday NY Times quoted Wal-Mart CEO H. Lee Scott Jr. saying that Wal-Mart would never again "try to go over the heads of local politicians in their quest for store growth, as they did in Inglewood, Calif., where they sponsored a referendum last year to try to sidestep city zoning." He lied.

At this moment, Wal-Mart is deeply involved in fighting a local government over a "Big Box" ordinance.

Flagstaff Arizona is a college town of about 60,000 people in the mountains of northern Arizona. The town has a unique and historic character. The city's motto is "They don't make town's like this anymore." The Flagstaff city council wants to keep it that way. So last year, they passed an ordinance limiting the size of new retail establishment to 125,000 square feet. By comparison, the Wal-Mart in Flagstaff is 106,000 sq. ft., and the Target is 98,000.

A few real estate moguls and development Nazis took offense at the ordinance. With the help of Wal-Mart money, they collected enough signatures to challenge the ordinance with a referendum vote. The vote is happening right now. It's a mail-in ballot. The County Recorder will count the votes on May 17.

According to the latest campaign finance report, Wal-Mart has spent more than $280,000 trying to overturn one local ordinance. This makes this little local election the most expensive in Flagstaff's history. The Wal-Mart money is spent on full-page newspaper ads and mailings, both full of vicious Orwellian rhetoric implying that a zoning ordinance that limits store size is somehow the same as burning books. Yeah, go figure.

So, when H. Lee Scott Jr. says that Wal-Mart doesn't do that sort of thing anymore, he's a liar....I'm so surprised.
