Elation in Harlem The Next Left

Two sixteen-year-old Muslim girls who were arrested and held for six weeks in a Pennsylvania detention center are being released. And as far as I understand no formal charges have been raised against them.

They were initially called would-be suicide bombers who posed "an imminent threat to the security of the United States." Now, one is returning back to school and the other is returning to Bangladesh with her family. HERE.

Oldies but Ghoulies

Last week Tom Burka at Opinions You Should Have posted this:

Vaccine Shortage Solution To Social Security Problem, Says Thompson

Secretary of Health and Human Resources Tommy Thompson said today that the flu vaccine shortage thus demonstrated the kind of "careful, long-range planning" that the Bush Administration brings to bear on difficult problems. "One or two more vaccine shortages, and we'll be able to put away that so-called lockbox," Thompson boasted.

Burka commented, "This plan is certainly as good, if not better, than what Bush just unveiled."

Hahahahahaha! That Tom Burka is really funny, I thought.

Mike Leavitt agreed, and operating under the principle [and you were wondering if he had any principles, weren't you?] that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, announced his innovative cost-containment program:

U.S. Official Touts Medicare Living Wills

By KEVIN FREKING The Associated Press Monday, May 2, 2005; 8:47 PM

WASHINGTON -- Encouraging new Medicare participants to write living wills could end up saving the government large amounts of money, Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said Monday.

Even funnier than Tom Burka, no? Cut Medicare costs, reduce the burden on Social Security, and avert suspicion that the Bush Administration would like to offer tax incentives for private contractors to satisfy the Soylent Green market. Hahahahaha!

Almost as funny as Laura Bush!

I mean, after all the whoop-de-don't that the White House went through regarding "end-of-life" decision-making with Terry Schiavo, who would think that such a suggestion could be anything more than a jest?

Not that anyone would actually deny medical care on the crass notion that it was cheaper to let people die than to provide treatment. No President or Governor, certainly no Texas Governor, would ever sign a Culture of Death bill that would allow a state to intrude into the private health care decisions of, say, a family? Would he? Not if it were called the

Not if it were called the Texas Futile Care Law. Not without the Religious Right getting reallyreallyreally upset, right?

Yeah, right.

Unfortunately for Secretary Thompson, so-called "experts" with no sense of humor took the whole thing seriously, and the laughs died down faster than you could shout "Grandma!"

Experts Dispute Remark That Living Wills Save Money

By Ceci Connolly Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, May 6, 2005; Page A09

Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said this week that encouraging senior citizens to write living wills could dramatically reduce Medicare's skyrocketing health care costs.

But a large body of scientific data -- including an article co-written by the Bush administration's Medicare chief -- offers little or no evidence that living wills or hospice care lower medical bills.

Old people-- screw 'em if they can't take a joke.

Yeah, right.

THE capture of a supposed Al-Qaeda kingpin by Pakistani agents last week was hailed by President George W Bush as “a critical victory in the war on terror”. According to European intelligence experts, however, Abu Faraj al-Libbi was not the terrorists’ third in command, as claimed, but a middle-ranker derided by one source as “among the flotsam and jetsam” of the organisation...read on

I mean are these people dumb or what? Bill Maher had it almost correct when he said words to the effect "How many times have we captured the number three guy already?" Obviously this wasn't one of those times.

Doctors or other health care providers could not be disciplined or sued if they refuse to treat gay patients under legislation passed Wednesday by the Michigan House. The bill allows health care workers to refuse service to anyone on moral, ethical or religious grounds. The Republican dominated House passed the measure as dozens of Catholics looked on from the gallery. The Michigan Catholic Conference, which pushed for the bills, hosted a legislative day for Catholics on Wednesday at the state Capitol.

How can a doctor refuse to treat a person on moral grounds?

Update- The corresponding bill in 2005, HB 4741, appears to bar discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation: here

HB 4741 also has not been passed by the house; it has merely been introduced and referred to committee. Instead of a bill to legalize the denial of health care to homosexuals, HB 4741 it appears designed to protect those who would deny abortion and contraceptives to patients.

 What Would Jesus Drive?

via Drunkablog

In a Drunkablog exclusive, our crack just-had-a-couple-at-lunch investigative team solves the mystery that has divided America: WWJD?

Shocking discovery: Jesus drives a Ford Taurus.

He's a rightie, but this is pretty funny.

Runaway "Bullshit"

The degradation of our public discourse continues as the national 'press corpse' struggles to elevate the absurdly trivial to a matter of national import...

Of course, in spending hours of air time speculating about Runaway Brides and other asinine minutia, they're not talking about anything that actually matters. Like Bush's Mission Accomplished.

Bring ‘em on: Seven Iraqi policemen killed, 15 wounded by car bomb in Tikrit.

Bring ‘em on: Thirteen Iraqis killed, 15 wounded by bomber at Iraqi recruiting center in Baghdad.

Bring ‘em on: Four Iraqi commandos killed, five wounded by car bomb in Mosul.

Bring ‘em on: Ten Iraqi policemen killed in two Baghdad ambushes.

Bring ‘em on: One US soldier and six Iraqis killed by car bomb at Baghdad’s Green Zone.

Bring ‘em on: Turkish truck driver killed in ambush near Baghdad.

Bring ‘em on: Oil pipeline ablaze near Balad.

Bring ‘em on: Insurgents execute fourteen Iraqis in Baghdad.

Bring ‘em on: Mortar attack on joint US/Iraqi checkpoint near Fallujah.

250 Iraqis killed in the last week.

All this, and yet we haven't seen any questions raised about the disaster that is the Bush administration Iraq policy. No, our so-called "news' outlets would rather explore every single explanation for why the Runaway Bride ran away. We've seen absolutely nothing on what is perhaps the most damning piece of evidence that we were misled into war--the so called smoking memo--detailing how our intelligence was shaped to fit the Bush administration's predetermined policy. You would think that such a revelation, in conjunction with rising death tolls and news of widespread fraud, would enrage people. But it doesn't because it's not covered. And that's the real problem with cable news: our blissfully ignorant populace believe they are being informed. There's a price attached to such slavish devotion to mindless infotainment. In the wake of 9/11, Bob Somerby explained:

WHILE CABLE SLEPT! This summer, your "press corps" took a pass on Osama. They pondered Gary Condit instead: Our current howler: (9/15/01) When the airwaves are devoted to Nonsense and Trivia, eventually something blows up.

Radical Right Has Takeover Plans

If you had any doubt that evangelical leader James Dobson's grand plan is to for the radical right fringe to assume the leadership of this country, here's your final clue. In a radio address about the filibuster and nuclear option, James C. Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, described the fight as the tipping point of the Bush presidency. "Nothing good took place last November, only the potential for something good," Dr. Dobson said.

DavidNYC has more: Praying for Holy War So Dobson is huffing and puffing quite a bit, but I don't see him having much leverage left. If he doesn't get what he wants, I think he's gonna just have to suck it up. fold.

Chuch Schumer says: Schumer Urges Bush to Rein in Judge Fight Sen. Charles Schumer, a leading Democrat in the fight over judicial nominees, urged President Bush to intervene and rein in the strongest conservative critics of Democratic opposition to some candidates.

You can see from this picture that President Bush, the First lady, Dobson, and his First lady shared a few prayers together. You can be sure Dobson won't back off quietly unless he has some sort of deal in the works.
