"Nations, like men, often march to the beat of different drummers, and the precise solutions of the United States can neither be dictated nor transplanted to others."

Making Up Stories    Rox Populi

Now that the gang at Powerline and Michelle Malkin have been proven again to be the the lying tools that they are (uh, and blaming Tom Harkin or looking for another scapegoat sorta goes against the whole Republican "personal responsibility" thing, doesn't it?), they'll need to find, as Atrios and Hilzoy suggest, a new scandalous untruth to spread to their drooling minions.

In the interest of bi-partisanship, I think we should help them brainstorm some ideas.

What shall it be, then? Illegal immigrants sneak into San Diego homes to drink the blood of unsuspecting white babies? Jimmy Carter performed a human sacrifice in the Lincoln Bedroom back in '78 and that's why he's not going to the Pope's funeral? Hillary Clinton conspired to have a guy murdered and then covered it up? John Kerry shot his entire squad in Vietnam and replaced them with hippie look-a-likes he found partying with Hanoi Jane in Ho Chi Min City?

Rep. Tom Cole keeping his eyes on the prize

Somebody cue up a mournful, yet optimistic, spiritual, because the Republicans think they're marching on Selma with their harebrained Social Security privatization scheme. Here's what Republican Rep. Tom Cole had to say recently:

Say what? Sure, I see exactly how screwing people out of their retirement and destroying America's economy is like taking part in a movement that helped give basic to an entire minority. And what would a Republican from Oklahoma know about taking part in the civil rights movement, anyway? If anything, people like Cole weren't on the receiving end of the fire hose, that's for sure. Something else you may have forgotten about Mr. Civil Rights. Here's a portion of an article from last year in the San Francisco Chronicle:

During a speech to Republicans in Yukon, Okla., last Saturday, the first-term congressman said that "if George Bush loses the election, Osama bin Laden wins the election" since enemies of the United States would interpret it as a sign of weakness.

Bin Laden is the alleged mastermind of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, that killed nearly 3,000 people.

"What do you think Hitler would have thought if Roosevelt would've lost the election in 1944? He would have thought American resolve was" (weakening), Cole said, according to a spokeswoman.

Yeah, this guy's just full of love. Keep your eyes peeled as Cole and his colleagues take part in cafeteria sit-ins at a retirement home near you in the very near future.

Killing Others In Public

From Florida - land of the 2000 recount ... Elian Gonzalez ... Terri Schiavo ... and the President's brother Jeb - comes this story: "Florida NRA Bill Would Allow People To Kill Others In Public"

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday he intends to sign a bill that would allow people who feel threatened -- even on the street or at a baseball game -- to "meet force with force" and defend themselves without fear of prosecution.

The bill would make a significant change in Florida law. Previously "people attacked anywhere else [were] supposed to do what they can to avoid escalating the situation and can use deadly force only after they've tried to retreat." Now with this new law, apparently, people would be under no obligation to look for ways to avoid the conflict. "The bill said a person has 'the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so, to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another.' " In other words ...Florida will become like the wild West, as it will be perfectly legal to shoot first and ask questions later.

Actually, when you think about it, wasn't that essentially George W. Bush's approach to Iraq?

Will someone try and pie Gannon/Guckert tomorrow?

We hope not, but AmericaBlog will be there to monitor the event. I'm sure he'll stop the perpetrator.

John says: Since they're requiring bloggers to bring a copy of their blog to prove we're for real, I'm bringing a copy of my story about Jeff with all the photos :-)

Minuteman Project lies again

A picture named MM.jpg

This is too much.

One of their members caught an illegal and made him hold up a T-shirt so he could be video taped and humiliated. On Hannity an Colmes, Chris Simcox (one of the leaders of the group that has been convicted of federal weapons charges ) lies to Colmes and then tells the truth in a New York hot second.

Video wmp

Video-QT

rough transcript:

Colmes:...part of your group who had this person that he detained, put on...hold up a T-shirt that said Bryan Barton caught an illiegal alien, and all I got was this T-shirt.

Simcox: Not true Allan

a hot second later

Colmes: So he did hold up the T-shirt?

Simcox: Well yea is that a law?

Then the punchline.

Simcox: He let the guy keep the T-shirt.

No this is not The Simpsons. There may not have been forcible detention, but what about human decency?

La Shawn Barber used our article today on Connected as the view from the left regarding the GOP memogate, and the falling down of the right wing blogosphere on it.

Video-WMP

I have to give her credit, because we cited her blog as a player in the smear campaign of the democrats and the allegations that the memo was false.

GOP Memo via Crooks and Liars - This lefty blogger chastises conservative bloggers for the way they covered the memo scandal, and he even names me as a culprit. Fair-minded gal that I am (don’t quote me), I plugged his blog today. He makes some good points.

Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi pitch the President

Bush’s very expensive bubble, which carefully shields the president from any kind of dissent, is pretty tough to pop. Nevertheless, the top two Dems in Congress are doing their level best to lure our shy president out of his shell to deal with Americans who aren’t pre-screened sycophants.

In fact, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi wrote to the president this week with a clever little pitch: if you like “town-hall meetings” on Social Security so much, maybe we should all hold one together...read on

We know that Bush might go along only on two conditions. That Reid and Pelosi sign a loyalty oath and recite the Bush Pledge.
