Blue Dog Fundraising Takes A Nose Dive. Wonder Why?

From the Center for Public Integrity, some very interesting news. This sort of undercuts Obama's "let's make the Blue Dogs happy" strategy, doesn't it?

It’s official. The Blue Dog’s fundraising slowdown was not just a symptom of the dog days of summer. Newly released public disclosure forms indicate that over September, the coalition’s PAC took in its smallest monthly total yet this year.

Our analysis of the fiscally conservative and increasingly influential Blue Dog Coalition and its funding noted that the group’s political action committee had averaged more than $176,000 in receipts from other PACs over the first half of 2009. Their monthly haul dropped to a surprisingly low $27,000 in July, rebounded somewhat in August, and but then dropped again to just $12,500 in September.

That September money came from just three donations — $5,000 from accounting and professional services giant Ernst & Young’s PAC, $2,500 from the Food Marketing Institute PAC, and $5,000 from the National Rifle Association of America Political Victory Fund.

After raising $1.1 million from January to June, the committee raised less than $87,000 between July and September — less than it brought in during any one of the preceding five months. And in just three months, the Blue Dog PAC’s monthly fundraising average dropped by more than $50,000 — probably not the sort of fiscal conservatism the 52-member coalition was hoping for.

volunteers for them and I told him no more dogs at home as ours had just died recently. Well guess what?, he brought home a 7 y.o. miniature Schnauzer that some old feller had to give up due to going into a nursing home with dementia...I have a new buddy now.

This is just the first step in kicking these frauds out of office. They thought they would be able to bask in the glow of the Democrat's huge majority without out having to sign on to a main Democratic principal, which has been healthcare reform. Whether they vote for the final bill with the public option doesn't really matter but, if they don't vote for cloture, which would get the bill to the floor, they're going to lose reelection either way. Having already showed their hands, they are finished! I can't wait for election night, 2010!

It might be more fun to watch the primaries next year. As Jane Hamsher said on Maddow last night "I dare Blanche Lincoln to vote against closure or Health Care."

Senator Ned Lamont.

Yes but with that example people have learned what happens when they try to continue with the status quo. Joe Lieberman. I don't know what the people of Connecticut think about him now. It would be interesting to find out. I think I know what we liberals think.

I don't really understand what you are saying Ricky.

and those thoughts will lead us to curse long and hard as he serves out the several years remaining on the six year term to which he was reelected despite being "primaried" by the likes of Jane Hamsher.

So Ricky tell me what would have happened if Jane Hamsher would not have "primaried" Lieberman. Do you think that the outcome would have been different?

ricky's picture

might could be. I can only observe what we have before us. And what we have is a seriously pissed off clown with a vote for years to come sitting in the U.S. Senate.

Would the outcome of Vietnam have been different had Gene McCarthy not challenged Lyndon Johnson? Maybe. But it won't bring back the dead.

Ok but I say we are better off because Lieberman was challenged (and beat in the primary)even though he ultimately won. We now have the experience of what happens when somebody we think should be voted out somehow keeps his/her seat. Is there any doubt that Lamont would have been better than Lieberman? Now If somebody is encouraged to run against Blanche Lincoln because she voted against health care we know what happens if she gets reelected(or something like that). The point is I don't see what was wrong with running Ned Lamont against Lieberman or what would be wrong with running somebody against Lincoln if she votes with the Republicans against health care reform.

They're having their noses rubbes innit.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

with a post which, except for her opening sentence taking a dig at Obama, is work copied from another source.

In her effort to show how bad the fortunes of the Blue Dogs PAC are,
she quotes a report showing what they received "from other PACs" has dropped precipitously in the last four months compared to the first six months of the year. Here is what she leaves out about those first six months, also from the Center for Public Integrity.

"So far this year, the Blue Dog Political Action Committee is on track to shatter all its fundraising records; in fact, the total for the first six months of 2009 — more than $1.1 million — is greater than what was raised in the entire 2003-04 fundraising cycle."

There is no analysis of fundraising efforts undertaken by the Blue Dog PAC to explain why their efforts were so successful in the first half of the year compared to the last four months. It could simply be due to a lack of effort lately.

Is there a basis for her to put "let's make the Blue Dogs happy" in quotation marks other than to imply it is something Obama said as part of a "strategy" nobody has documented?

I am no fan of Blue Dog caucus members. But just like Joe Lieberman, who I detest politically, they have votes in Congress which anyone who wants to pass anything must take into account.

are the only reason Susie Madrak seems to write anything. The bash the Prez on the so-called "progressive" blogs is getting to be beyond the pale. Fortunately, President Obama won't let this sniveling bother him any more than the PUMA attacks did during the campaign.

miss_kitty's picture

the only reason you seem to have written anything here, after a year as a member.

Face it, the guy is doing a poor job. Blogs to which you refer as progressive in quotes, like this one, gave the incoming Dems in 2006 every chance, and even after we got screwed by that band of fuckers, called it a new day with President Obama, and defended him to the hilt. He's not earning any kind of loyalty from thinking people with actions that don't match his words, his lack of decisiveness, and his inability to steer congress in a manner that will get needed shit done in a way it needs to be done, and in a way the majority wants. It's his job, and he's not doing it well.

I personally hope for better for him, and soon. He really needs to kick it into gear, like yesterday.

The question is completely sincere.

Susie seems to be serious but made up crud detracts from the message. IMO

Use of quotes is suppose to mean something if one follows the basic rules of writing.

"I know that there are people who do not love their fellow
man, and I hate people like that!
" ~ Tom Lehrer (1928 - )

I read it as though the quotes meant "so-called," not that they were any actual quote. Maybe she should have used italics, but aren't we being a skotch picky? I don't think it detracted at all from her opinion journalism. Rock on, Susie.

be sarcasm aimed at the post, not criticism of any comments. I asked the same question about the quote raised by Handypants in my longer comment above. I have no problem with Susie Madrak expressing an opinion, but I would not call writing one sentence with a misleading quote followed by a cut and paste of a report by others "journalism" in the sense of reporting or writing a column. Especially when the report she cut and pasted does not tell the story her headline and one sentence implies.

If you would like more on that last point, let me know.

They're YOUR representatives, so YOU can fund them.

Changing the political composition of this country is going to take some time. That is why delaying health insurance care reform is the best thing to do now. Waiting until we elect congresspeople that represent us ahead of corporate interests is our only chance.

We'll be waiting a long ass time

Not if we use issues like insurance reform to smoke them out. 1/3 of the senate and all of the house is up for election in 2010.
