Deepwater Horizon Was Supposed To Be Inspected At Least 1X A Month. It Wasn't. Why?
One of the ideas that made our country great is the idea that the law is applied equally. I knew there were plenty of exceptions and special deals, of course, but somehow I still believed that ultimately, justice would prevail.
Now, compare this with what happens to you if you drive down the street with an outdated inspection sticker on your car. (I really have to stop watching those Frank Capra movies!)
The federal agency responsible for ensuring that the Deepwater Horizon was operating safely before it exploded last month fell well short of its own policy that the rig be inspected at least once per month, an Associated Press investigation shows.
In fact, the agency's inspection frequency on the Deepwater Horizon fell dramatically over the past five years, according to federal Minerals Management Service records. The rig blew up April 20, killing 11 people before sinking and triggering a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Since January 2005, inspectors issued just one minor infraction for the rig. That strong track record led the agency last year to herald the Deepwater Horizon as an industry model for safety.
[...] The AP sought to find out how many times government safety inspectors visited the Deepwater Horizon, and what they found. In response, MMS officials offered a changing series of numbers. The MMS has had long-standing issues with its data management.
At first, officials said 83 inspections had been performed since the rig arrived in the Gulf 104 months ago, in September 2001. While being questioned about the once-per-month claim, the officials subsequently revised the total up to 88 inspections. The number of more recent inspections also changed — from 26 to 48 in the 64 months since January 2005.
In the meantime, a "60 Minutes" investigation points to gross negligence on the part of BP.

Because I got high...
Since Republicans made Drill Baby Drill their mantra in 2008, and the issue of offshore drilling has been active in the public dialogue, how many times has an AP reporter, or any MSM reporter examined what the folks at MMS have been doing? After all, we knew they were doing toot and having sex in the Denver office before 2008. Any follow up?
Anyone? Bueller?

. . . and getting away with it so far. Things might start to change when the effects start hitting the beaches.
Corruption favors the wealthy.
executives got off the rig but all the workers didn't? Anyone know how?
The executives were on the rig patting each other on the back about their safety record on that rig. Who says Mother Nature doesn't have a sense of irony?
Now there's a phrase we'll hear again.
Convenient that most of the workers are dead and the rig is at the bottom of the Gulf.
- Mandate inspections.
- Cut back on staff to perform said inspections.
- Inspections don't get done and/or become lick-and-a-promise jobs.
- Tighten regulations after a big spill.
- There's STILL no staff to perform said inspections. Nothing changes.
and our government too intrusive.

why is it we haven't heard this guy right after this rig blew-up?
why was it held by CBS for ratings season? why wasn't he at the senate hearings two weeks ago? the gov. knows this info and yet has withheld it. that destroyed rubber seal is the reason for this situation, and the negligence of BP forcing improper implementation. and why is justice not arresting the BP execs for manslaughter?
oh i know, we need to worry about who lost on idle.....

It's all a plot by CBS ('Cause Barack's Socialist!).
This is a Fluff piece WHAT BP, Transocean or Haliburton executive was responsible for side tracking the Inspector. The TERRORIST must be held accountable, and if the piece of sh*t is in the republican Anti American party of White Supremacy all the better.
These are American TERRORIST WHY?,WHY?,WHY isn't the Anti AMerican party of TRAITORS the republicans calling for HEADS? Why because they are in this up to their necks just like the TERRORIST of the Financial Institutions.
The Anti American republican party of Hate and Fear MUST be INVESTIGATED these Terrorist MUST be held accountable.
I just called the hotel where we will be staying on the west coast of Florida, Sanibel Island, next month. I asked her if the spill had caused visiors to cancel their reservations. She said no. She said she wished the news would stop talking about it because the ocean would take care of itself. She said 5000 barrels of oil escape the oceans every day without this spill. She added that hopefully we will learn something from this to stop future spills.
I listened politely and countered some of her statements. When she got to the part where she said these scientists didn't know what they were talking about, that's when I almost blew my top. As nicely as I could at that point I told her I was married to one of those scientist and I would have to disagree with her.
I'm guessing she was playing with a tea bag while we were chatting.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
lose your deposit if you cancel your reservations.
We don't want to cancel and we won't. I just wondered if the news of the spill was having any effect that far south on the west coast. I just called my husband and told him what the lady told me. He said there is one thing occuring in Sanibel right now and that is there is a lady there with a bad case of "being fu*king stupid".

It's chronic, possibly terminal.

the blame is on so many people that no one is guilty. like killing caesar...
... as bad as getting stabbed in the rotunda?
The Navy has a command concept that should come into play here. The CO may be relieved simply for "loss of confidence in the ability to command". End of career.
Too bad that will never happen in business.
If BP executives manage to pull through this thing with minimal damage (like Exxon), they'll be lauded by their peers. And Wall Street.
Buying off the inspectors is a lot more profitable to a corporation than maintaining safety specifications up to the prescribed standard.
Imagine a world where if you were speeding or illegally parked you just tell the police to look the other way for one dollar. That dollar spent would be a well spent dollar since you are now allowed to park wherever you want or drive as fast as you like.
I can't, I'd like to but I can't.. so while we work against corruption as best we can, we shouldn't be so arrogant, needy and/or greedy as to plan on their being none
it be allowed to profit from its bad behavior? I don't think so. Is this "corporate anarchy?" They can do just as they please without repercussions? There are no laws that can curtail their acts?
much improvement in the future.
I have seen several pieces of video and a number of stories on the "MBA Oath". It seems that the majority of MBA graduates see little if anything wrong with the actions taken on Wall Street or in the BP boardroom. In fact, most seem to defend good ol' Gordon Gecko's ethical position.
These are the folks who will be making the decisions on the next "big project".
We can do big stuff but we're bound to muck it up at some point and we'd better be prepared to live with the consequences.. the greedy arrogant folks who tell us not to worry cuz we'll never make a mistake are the ones responsible.. mistakes need to be factored .. deep sea oil exploration is on the edge in my book, nuclear power where we are never to make a mistake in longer than recorded history thus far is a recipe for disaster ..
we need to strive for perfection but we need to be prepared to accept the reality of being less than perfect.. an automobile pile up, a bridge failure, the destruction of the Gulf, the destruction of the East Coast etc- somewhere there's a line..
Is this the oil industry's Challenger space shuttle disaster?
But's it's our disaster, it intimately affects all of us.. The Challenger disaster was terrible but it's impact on humanity was small compared to what is still happening in the Gulf.
Right, I agree about the scope of the disaster. But Challenger fundamentally changed the way managers make decisions in the face of various scenarios.
..it's "governmental oversite's" Challenger disaster. But I won't be holding my breath . . again.
I hope so too. Maybe all it takes is enforcement of existing rules. That would be a novel concept, both here and on Wall Street.
Hope this works. His company has the go-ahead from the State Attorney's office and all of the parish presidents along the coast. There are three of these devices already set on barges at Venice, LA ready to go. Who's the hold up? So far, it's BP.
