Iraq to Reopen, Rename Abu Ghraib Prison

torture_719b2.jpg

I guess it's kind of like New Coke: The New, Improved Abu Ghraib! No torture here, no siree!

BAGHDAD (AP) -- A senior justice official says the Iraqi government will reopen the notorious Abu Ghraib prison next month, but it will have a new name.

The announcement comes as the U.S. military has begun handing over detainees in its custody to the Iraqis under a new security agreement.

Deputy Justice Minister Busho Ibrahim says the renovated facility will be called Baghdad's Central Prison because the previous name has left a "bitter feeling inside Iraqis' hearts."

Gee, ya think?

nice. That's all it takes I guess. Watched Taxi to the dark side. This isn't just an oddity or a few loose cannons.

It's the Rule of Law and without it there will be more torture, more Abu Ghraib's;

The trouble with comparing the renamed Abu Ghraib with New Coke, is New Coke's been closed down.

Renaming it! What a great idea!!!
You know, you could rename Ann Coulter Marilyn Monroe. But he'd still be an ugly, soulless skank.

Uh, if these are Iraqi prisoners why can't they be held in Iraq? The phrase "putting lipstick on a pig" comes to mind.

And do you see the asshole standing to the right wearing the fatigues? No doubt, he was unwanted, unloved and dumped off in daycare. When he signed up and took the test, I'm sure they could see that his mind was not normal and he'd be perfect for the job. Now this nutcase is probably living in your neighborhood. Isn't that a wonderful feeling?

All it previous two owners did in there was torture people. In ethnically diverse Iraq, with all the blood feuds this nation has created there since 2003, there will be even more from owner #3.

Of course, they are closing GITMO. Maybe they can send those guys to Abu Ghraib? Oh, thats right, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Nevermind!

Rove was the master of it. He rebranded Iraqi Freedom Fighters as

"Al Qaeda In Iraq"

When Kobi Alexander's Comverse was caught red-handed wiretapping on behalf of the NSA and a foreign country prior to 9/11, they simply renamed the company "Verint."

now that Sadam is gone, don'tcha think?

/snark

Imagine how much better Iran will be after Ajmadinjad's gone.

The history of this place is filled with horror. Prior to the U.S. invasion it was estimated to hold up to 15,000 prisoners. Guards were said have fed them shredded plastic. There are allegations that some of these detainees were subjected to experiments as part of Iraq's chemical and biological weapons program. There are mass graves in many areas surrounding the prison.

When the U.S. got there, a high percentage of the prisoners taken were random villagers who were innocent of anything.

The place is filled with the ghosts of torture, rape, murder and misery.

Raze it.

Rumsfeld, Bush, Cheney, Perle, and Wolfie, et al. should pay for it and turn it into a memorial or something and build whatever kind of prison they need somewhere else just out of respect for the Iraqi people and the horrors that went on there.

.

They seriously need to tear that sucker down. In the name of all that is decent.

and put up a fountain or a park. Too much bad blood and bad things have happened within those walls. They need to balance the bad karma.

Tear down this prison!

in that place. His father is from Delaware. So is Joe Biden. Interesting.

,

.

They should make it into an amusement park...
... Dunk Tank
... Shoe toss
... Dodge wire
... Canine Run
... Haunted Cell

That should keep bad memories alive and well, NO?

.

Abu Ghraib ought to be made into a museum, a site detailing the crimes of Hussein *and* the United States. People NEED TO KNOW, NEED TO REMEMBER.

If things work out even a little bit in Iraq, the Iraqis will NOT become like the Israeli Government, seeming to think past sins against them make it OK to sin against others.

Did they decorate that prisoner for Christmas?

He'd be real pretty all lit up.

What on earth do you expect them to do with it, bulldoze it? It's a building, and it needs to be recycled. Useful. There are no such thing as ghosts.

I never did take a close look at that photo until today. Notice the blood on the retard's trousers on the right? IRK, it makes me feel ill.

Those are desert camo's. But you're right. The tards expression says it all.

I thought maybe the soldiers had a shortage of toilet paper.

doesn't he get the IRONY in that statement? Bush fed the Republicans DUMB-PILLS for eight years. It's time to prosecute ALL OF 'EM.

Whatever they rename Abu Ghraib prison, it will still be the prison in Abu Ghraib city.

Until the country, under whomever is in charge, renounces torture and and capital punishment, Abu Ghraib will still be a notorious hellhole where Iraqi are tortured and killed.

...still stinks to high heaven. Instead of building prisons wouldn't it be something if people built greenhouses to grow all sorts of food.

A simple choice... too bad there's so many people like the guard in the photo, looks like he's texting somebody, completely oblivious to the torture of the guy wearing the hood. Where did they lose their humanity?

the George W Bush library and we won't have to build one here, won't deface our country with one and save us a ton of money.

dismantel abu ghraib and reasimyble it on the washington square mall, as a reminder of americas treachery to a country it had no buisness invadeing ! perhaps add some sound affects for the tourists , screams of agony , the sounds of whips and attack dogs would be a nice touch! it could make a very nice attraction and remind the brain dead in this country never to follow your leaders blindly into wars of choice!

This is the first time I've seen this photo with more than just the poor man in the hood. It's even more chilling with the soldier on the right... look at him. Bored. Nothing much exciting going on here, just another dull day at the office. Yawn. Oh well, this may take awhile. Think I might as well send a text to Mom...

That's what gets me, the complete nonchalance in his attitude.

I can't remember the exact quote or it's source, but there was a writer about WWII refering to the banality of evil.

Most of the Nazis were normal looking people some of whom did the worst things imaginable.

that humans were more like the Bonobo and less like the Common Chimp.

It's all the rage with Corporate America. When you have a lousy company who's name is toxic - just change the name! Hey! It worked with Valujet -aka AirTran

Rename it Jesus Camp! Yeah, that's the ticket!
