Lebanese Rockets Hit Israel

Lebanese militants fired at least three rockets into Israel early Thursday, threatening to open a new front for the Jewish state as it pushed forward with a bloody offensive in the Gaza Strip that has killed nearly 700 people. Israel responded with mortar shells.
The rockets that exploded in Israel's north raised the specter of renewed hostilities with Hezbollah, just 2 1/2 years after Israel battled the guerrilla group to a 34-day stalemate. Hezbollah started the 2006 war as Israel was battling Palestinian militants in Gaza.
No group claimed responsibility and Lebanon's government, wary of conflict, quickly condemned the rocket fire, which lightly injured two Israelis.
For a second straight day, Israel said it suspended is Gaza military operation for three hours to allow in humanitarian supplies. Shortly before the pause took effect, however, the U.N. said one of its aid trucks came under Israeli fire, killing the driver.
U.N. spokesman Adnan Abu Hasna said the U.N. coordinated the delivery with Israel, and the vehicle was marked with a U.N. flag and insignia when it was shot in northern Gaza. The Israeli army said it was investigating.
The allegation was sure to raise tensions with the United Nations, which has already demanded an investigation into Israel's shelling of a U.N. school in Gaza that killed nearly 40 people. At the time, Israel said it opened fire after militants hiding in the crowd shot mortar shells at Israeli troops.
Before the lull on Thursday, Israel killed at least 11 people in Gaza, including five militants, raising the death toll from its 13-day offensive to 699 people, according to Palestinian medical officials. The offensive is meant to halt years of Palestinian rocket attacks on southern Israel, but with roughly half the dead believed to be civilians, international efforts to broker a cease-fire have been gaining steam.
[...] Israel has repeatedly said it was prepared for a possible attack on the north since it launched its bruising campaign against Hamas militants in Gaza on Dec. 27. Israel has mobilized thousands of reserve troops for such a scenario, and leaders have warned Hezbollah of dire consequences if it enters the fighting.
"We are following what is happening in the north. We are prepared and will respond as necessary," Defense Minister Ehud Barak told reporters.
Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora condemned both the attacks and Israel's retaliatory fire. The attacks are "the work of parties who stand to lose from the continued stability in Lebanon," Saniora said.

I would place my bets on it being Palestinians who live in S. Lebanon. I know that there are a lot of them living there. I don't think Hezbollah is ready to play yet, but will get involved in the next few weeks if things get out of control.

The REAL story today is how Israeli soldiers posted just 200 feet away from a Palestinian house in Gaza let the wounded civilians there starve and die for four days while the Red Cross was trying to get clearance from the Israeli air force to go and get those wounded. Four children were found next to their dead mothers. The children were too weak to stand.
The REAL story is the humanitarian catastrophe that's exacerbated by the fact that the UN has suspended its aid campaign because an Israeli army tank shot and killed two UN drivers delivering food. This happened during the three hour lull, no less.
The REAL story is the fact that since this whole massacre began, Israel has targeted and killed 26 medical crews as they were responding in their well marked ambulances.
Meanwhile the west is sitting with its thumbs up its ass and assholes all over America are wondering, "why do they hate us?".
Then when 9/11 happened everyone was so fucking clueless.

Its not so simple for the Middle Eastern governments. Even Israel and Saudi Arabia do not want to back, help or call for a cease fire when the Palestinian group is seen as an Iranian proxy (Hamas). But they (The Arab League) do have a peace plan on the table and have agressively pushed it for six years even getting sufficient pressure on Hamas to accept it, give them that.

Sixthly, during a massive assault on Israel by several Arab states, Israel managed to turn the tides and seize a crapload of land and even some of the biggest Israeli critics agreed that this was a step necessary to ensure that something similar could never happen again. I am not actually pro-Israel, though I am sure my posts would leave people thinking that I am. Unfortunately, I am only responding to so many hateful, acidic posts about Israelis; were this a conservative forum I was suicidal enough to visit, I'd probably find myself trying to defend the Palestinian people. At the end of the day, all groups involved deserve the right to live as well as their own state and anyone who disagrees probably subscribes to a dangerously-linear version of history wherein one side is made up of Evil Tyrants and the other, Innocent Victims.
I oppose what the Israeli government is doing, but then, their back is against the same wall it has been against over sixty years; time and again, their existence is threatened, and daily, civilians are targeted in attacks. Hamas may have been elected democratically, but it's a moot point when their stated goal is the obliteration of the state of Israel and the Jews within it. What is Israel to do? People complain and even wish harm on innocent Israelis, but I have yet to see a single person--a single person--offer a viable alternative solution.

The Mufti of Jerusalem was forced out of Palestine, by the British in 1937. A full 2 years before the beginning of WWII. The Germans agreed to let him live in exile in Germany; becuase, they were afraid that he would bring to the Worlds attention the fact that German policies were the reason that so many Jews were fleeing to Palestine. He was a potential political embarrassment to them. When WWII broke out 6,000 Palestinian Muslims joined the British Army to fight against the Germans.

My point was that the real "meaning" of anything in the Bible can never be determined, since over the years it has been translated from so many languages into so many other languages that one cannot account for discrepancies in word definitions between languages. For example, "virgin" in one language means a woman who has not had sex, whereas in another language it simply means "a young woman." Thus the argument between Catholics and Protestants as to whether Mary was a "virgin" or not. (That's just one example, and don't you Protestants who DO believe Mary was a "virgin" get indignant that I misrepresented you, please.)
Also, all holy books are written by humans, many of whom have a decided slant to their beliefs, so naturally they are going to put their religion in a good light.

It is like screaming bloody murder when we bombed Germany or when we took out Japan. I know this will incite many but it saved an estimated 100,000 soldiers lives to get Japan to surrender.
In todays world the U.N. would have been rushing supplies to both Germany and Japan in WWII and then the U.S. would be criticized for any harm done.
Israel is trying to put an end to the daily rocket attacks by defeating Hamas. That is how wars are won. Not by staving off the hatred for another day.

I also blame other Arab countries for not allowing free and easy immigration to those Palestinians who want to move.
If you had to ask someone with a rifle for permission to take your pregnant wife to hospital and been refused, I'm sure that would cause resentment. If those same soldiers with rifles, tanks, helicopter gunships, F16 fighters and other advanced weapons, made your day to day existence a living hell, I'm sure that you'd feel resentment. If those same soldiers cut off all food aid, all fuel, all medicine, all water, I'm sure you'd feel resentment.
When you pile resentment upon resentment upon resentment it becomes hatred. Hatred causes people to strike out and try to hurt the people who repress them with any means that they can. Sometimes it's rocks, sometimes it's suicide bombers, sometimes it's rockets. Remember that the Palestinians don't have a vast armaments industry, they also don't have the US shipping them the most advanced and lethal weapons in the world. They use what they have to retaliate however they can. No matter what the provocation, whether rocks, bombs or rockets, the Israeli reaction is always far more severe. If two Israelis die from a rocket, Israel will move in with tanks and bulldozers, demolish 1 or 10 or 20 houses, sometimes with the people still inside. Then the helicopters come in and fire missiles into crowds and kill men women and children.
The Palestinians become enraged at the amount of violence that Israel has used and fire more rockets or suicide bombers etc. The cycle goes on and on.
So, when Canada has done all that to the US, I'd expect no less a reaction from the US.
Can you imagine the outrage and the loud calls for vengeance if it was 700 ISRAELIS killed in the fighting, not 700 Palestinians??
And how can Israel condemn any violence against its civilians when they themselves are bombing schools and U.N. facilities?
Sheer hypocrisy on Israel's part. And shame on us for arming them and funding them.

No one has the right to do this to their fellow human beings I don't care what their differences may be. No one deserves to live under these conditions just because two governments can't get along. The innocent people are victims, no matter who they are or where they live.
