Reports: Eight CIA Agents Killed in Afghan Suicide Bombing

Can't find confirmation, but I heard this attack described as the single biggest loss to the the CIA since the Vietnam war:

(CNN) -- An attack by a suicide bomber at a military base in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday killed eight Americans believed to be CIA employees, a senior U.S. official told CNN.

Also Wednesday, four Canadian soldiers and a Canadian journalist were killed when a roadside bomb hit their armored vehicle in southern Afghanistan, Canada's defense ministry said.

The suicide bombing happened at Forward Operating Base Chapman in Khost province, Afghanistan. The senior U.S. official who spoke to CNN said information indicates the bomber walked into a gym facility at the base and detonated a suicide vest. It is believed six Americans were wounded in addition to the eight killed. It's not known how the bomber got past security.

A U.S. military source said that FOB Chapman was originally a base for the Khost Provincial Construction Team, but the team left some time ago.

Authorities believe that perhaps the suicide bomber attacked just after a convoy was ending or beginning, which would account for high number of casualties.

these CIA mofos have been fucking with other people for so long. the list of people who've died as a result of CIA interventions is enormous. and on top of that, the American empire denies any responsibility for these deaths, using the excuse of "anti-terrorism" (or just operating covertly)

Reported loss.

Remember Navy SEALs, Special Forces and now Blackwater are de facto CIA operatives and have been since the 60s.

Securing central Asia is crucial to our empire's geopolitical and energy dominance in this century, or so we are told.

They are there. They are on orders, and like them or hate them, the are Americans trying to do their job.

I can think of lots of noble things I could do to serve my "country". Murdering and torturing innocent people are not included. Overthrowing elected governments is not included either.

I guess the SS was under orders too? I'm not making a straight comparison, but you expect me to honor them simply because they are Americans?

They are enemies of real freedom and democracy. Do we need a clandestine intelligece service? Sure, it's vital. But not the out of control organization it is today.

I just prefer normal, feeling human beings who have the interests of the American people at heart. The culture at CIA ia anything but that.

I would like to think positively about the CIA, I just can't.

in your title you refer to "CIA agents", but note that a CIA agent is not the same thing as a CIA officer. a case officer (american CIA employee) runs agents (foreign asset).

The foriegn press is reporting the UN investigating an incident three days ago where 10 locals, mostly kids, were killed in the northern part of the country.

The UN investigation is focusing on perhaps Taliban being the killers but Karzai has accused "foriegners". NATO has even admitted that was the case but that they were not NATO tropps but hired civilians (read "merceneries") on a "sanctioned" mission who fired in "self defense".

Not a peep about this from the main stream media. I havent seen Maddow or Olberman in a while so don't know about them.

And personally I think we need more intelligence in the world

Less commando squads, unless it's for limited warfare so some farm kid from Padunk is not expected to do what takes a trained killer,

And of course more analysis of the raw intelligence

We know as an agency that is so, but not as individuals.

Ultimately the responsibility is boosh, who even though he was appointed by a conservative activist court, was president of the US

So by your reasoning we are all liable as a nation

And all that does is deflect blame from those who made these decisions.

Hernand Cortex's picture

... are you serious? That is some bloody rape train you just ran on logic there lad...

While one can be anti-war, where is it written that one must be okay with death, however it comes, and to whomever?

Since the War in Iraq is wrong, do we cheer the death of soldiers, who are receiving payback for policies that they had nothing to do with, but enforce on a daily basis? While these people may or may not have to answer for actions taken as individuals, how can we judge them to have been party to these other actions you ascribe to them?

By that logic, we can paint any member of the armed forces with Abu Ghraib, any member of the UN with the oil for food scandal, or any member of the NYPD after the Diallo case. This is illogical, and, in a time of death and sorrow, downright cruel.

Hernand Cortex's picture

made of volunteers, not conscripts.

Your post is rather dishonest... but wanting to have it all both ways is something some Americans excel at: illegally occupying a country, and at the same time play the victim.

yakfitguy's picture

It is dishonest. Laval thinks that the CIA agents that murder and torture innocent people are just like any army private or UN worker.

They are not.

They are not simply innocent individuals serving a cause. They have an ideology and they are enforcing it through their own brand of terror. I'm not cheering for anything. I just have no sympathy for ruthless killers who lie to me and you every day.

The whole religious complexion of the modern world is due to the absence from Jerusalem of a Lunatic Asylum. -Havelock Ellis

CIA employees do not subscribe to an "ideology" - they follow the whims of the President, whom ever that may be.

yakfitguy's picture

Nobody gets drafted into the CIA. Nobody joins for college money. They may take orders but that's like saying no one in the SS had an ideolgy. They were just politically-neutral folks who took orders from Hitler. They do it out of conviction that they are right. Not because they were simply ordered to do it.

You're telling me that CIA torturers don't believe in what they're doing? Funny, you should read the accounts of FBI staff who related the attitudes they saw in the CIA interrogators. Those "employees" believe the whole Bush-Cheney fantasy and enjoy carrying out violations of human rights.

The whole religious complexion of the modern world is due to the absence from Jerusalem of a Lunatic Asylum. -Havelock Ellis

Funny, The UN examples and NYPD examples seemed rather appropos, then, to take out the volunteer status of the armed forces. Either way you slice it, this is cheering death in some small way.

You know nothing of my own politics or views on war, yet my dislike of people expressing satisfaction in the death of another is enough to pigeonhole me as dishonest?

yakfitguy's picture
No.

It's because you apply a double standard. American = GOOD. This is why the world hates us and yet we can't understand why.

It's because we're so damn arrogant about our position, so convinced of our cause that we are blind.

We refuse to see that there are bad people in our government who lie, murder, and torture in our name. Supposedly to protect us, but more often to some selfish corporate end.

The CIA has a long history of crimes. It's members are willing participants.

Suicide bomber equals the ultimate smart bomb.
Not that drone missile and infrared guided
garbage.

Unfortunately, the eight CIA agents are considered
collateral damage by the US government like the
civilians killed "by accident" in Iraq and
Afghanistan and drones in Pakistans.

Palestinians, Pakistanis and Iraqis probably
consider the victims killed by the planes
on 9-11 as "collateral damage".

The US government, Pentagon and Defense
Department should think outside the box
like Al Qaeda. The 9-11 bombers with $ 20
in box cutters and imagination seemed to
have done more damage to America than the
$ 750 billion spends in so called defense
yearly in the US not counting the 2 billion
spent in Iraq and unknown amount in
Afghanistan.
